I have always been a fan of the Mazda's. As a better car for the money. Hyundai, has done it now, again, but better. Better than the Mazda, Honda, and I think even the Golf. VW's are nice but, this thing is faster and handles better. More fun for the money. I remember seeing an older Veloster, when I was an oil change tech. I was amazed at the suspension on this thing, from looking at it from underneath. I finished the oil change and raced upstairs, from the pit, to see what it was. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was a Hyundai. The driver was an enthusiast, and loved the handling. This car, I imagine to be the best version, so far. Let's hope that Hyundai keeps stepping this car up, without making it an overweight pig. It could be a class leader for a spell!!

This car is so good. Every other manufacturer needs to get it together and give people what they want like Hyundai. Good prices, insane warranties, easy to maintain and looks good. Fun to drive is just a bonus after that I think.
I don't mind the 3-door thing, but I wish it was the other door. You're most likely going to use it for groceries or a kid or whatever and you just want to open the door behind the driver's door, throw it in, and be on your way. As-is you have to walk almost entirely around the car to buckle in a kid or throw 3 bags of groceries in there, and that sucks. As-is the configuration is good for uber drivers, and that's about it. . I drove the R and was quite impressed with it for the price. I'd love to drive the N with more power. Though I think I'd go with the 6sp. That 6sp shifter feels great, it's right up there with Honda in my book, it's a rock solid shifter, feels great.

@@clutch6152 I want a daily I can track and the N is a better platform for that. The N is ton more fun to drive as well. I already drive a modded GTI that can pull 1.5g laterally. It's still numb and kinda boring compared to even a stock N. I also have more confidence in the N with less grip than I do in my GTI, cause I can actually feel what the car is doing. In the gti I'm left guessing based on noise more than anything else, it's almost completely numb. You really should go drive one. They also have a pretty good aftermarket now as well.
@@SI0AX you'd have to change so much of the car that you'd be better off just buying a new car. You'd have to do control arms, new diff, change the steering rack, replace all bushings, change out the sub frame, motor mounts, and possibly move the motor back (and that's not really an option). VW hangs the motor off the front of the car, and that's probably the biggest contributing factor to the numb front end. Even if you could get rid of that numb front end you'd be left with a car that would still get eaten alive by an N or a Civic Type R on track. Both the N and Civic Type R come without the numb front end without mods.

I am so happy to see Hyundai making the cars they are now. They are killing it with the N line and have come so far from what they were in the early 2000s
I wish Hyundai would have released the i30N 4-dr hatch in Canada and the US. It would have been a great contender in the same space as the GTI. With only 3 doors and that wing, the Veloster is just a bit too aggressive for my taste.
This is such a great car I don’t even care that it’s FWD, LSD and DCT along with the rest of the performance is phenomenal, and it looks soooo good, I want my hands on it!
My niece has the older one of these, she has had some minor upgrades done to it & loves the thing, no drama with service & never given her a problem, also it blows the doors off her brothers car, Rj in Oz
Man i remember when Honda CRX was a thing and I wanted one so bad.. I really feel like this car is going to spur that craze again. Such a cool looking hot hatch with the performance to back it up.
If the Elantra N that's coming later this year has the all the bells and whistles that this doesn't (cooled front seats, wireless charging/carplay, sunroof, etc.) I will 100% buy it. Hyundai is making some great enthusiast cars these days
They kinda did without the name. They got the new hatch with the optional AWD 2.5 turbo setup. Only in auto though which kinda turns me off because no mazdaspeed 3 came in auto only in manual option.
This car seems awesome! I appreciate the comparisons you guys mentioned because Veloster N and GTI are near the top of the list for me when the time comes for an update
I have the 2020 Veloster N manual, and the suspension in N mode is very harsh riding. In custom mode I put the suspension in normal mode, steering in sport and everything else in N mode and its just about perfect. No wonder they felt it was a "little firm", the suspension in N mode is for really smooth race tracks only.
I couldn't quite justify the Veloster when I made my last purchase, and ended up getting a Forte GT manual. While, obviously not the N, it's a pretty good 80% (more?) representation in a more subtle package. I'd like to see you guys review one. Love it, or hate it, it makes no difference to me. I like it, and that's what matters wen I send in that payment every 6th of the month.
I wish I could afford this car, best hot hatch out there. I had to settle for a Corolla hatchback which I’m very happy with but nowhere near the performance. Difficult to find roads where you can get to use all that performance. Only negative on the N, at least for me, is the crackling and popping.
As someone who owns a 2018 Swift and actually being on a frezny with the new i30 N Perf, which I am getting in few months, I am so pissed that the Veloster is not being sold in EU countries. Most likely I would go for that over the new i30N Facelift, but hey. The fact alone that we are talking about Performance quality cars, HYUNDAI cars, says alot for the company.
I like the big doors cause my fish-eyes is not being blocked by B-pillar... N's engine and DCT transmission combined with Kona's AWD system would make a potent combo.
What percent chance do you think the Kona N (being unveiled tomorrow IIRC!) will have an AWD option? It might just end up being the one to buy if they don't jack the price to $36K+
I raised the bitrate by 50% about a month ago. We also switched to Hero9s. I wonder if that's doing it. Sometimes the Hero 9 records in HVEC 265, sometimes in a normal HEVC 264 (which has been our standard for years). We updated the firmware on the 9s this week. Hopefully that helps. ZK
I enjoyed your review. Parts were vague for me as I am not familiar with most of the other cars you reference. Some of that is on me. I am comparing with Tesla not VW or BMW. I love your spirited driving, long ago, I had a '70 Mach I Mustang with Ford's (no BS) competition suspension. Harsh but did what it was told. I put almost 100k hard miles on that car. Much of it on twisty mountain roads. I have recently been considering Tesla options... I knew Hyundai offered lots of tech features without having to buy the top trim models (Ford and GM, you know who I am outing). I like the tech, of which Tesla is easily king. I also believe in always having a plan B. So I have been learning about Hyundai models.
For those looking for the prototype Matt was talking about, the name is RM19 not RM13. Great review btw! The dual take is now my favorite style of review coming out the channel.
I still can't bring myself out of the 'but it's a Hyundai/Kia' camp 😐 However, I can't deny how cool this (and the Stinger/G70) is.. I've always favored the German autos. Maybe I just need to go drive one??
Bought a 2021 manual very recently, should be taking it to the track very soon for my final verdict, but so far it's not just hype for sure ! It's veeeery good, and it makes a great daily as well, as long as you run the suspension in Normal lol.
Matt can certainly drive. If I was riding with him if chicken handle was a lump of coal it would be a diamond by the time I got out of the car. Personal wish list, Kona N manual
I think I'm having a problem with mine. I put the gear lever into N mode for extra power, and the car doesn't go anywhere. It just revs like crazy. Any tips?
Another great review but something is up with your camera recording or encoding, even at 4k (2160p60) there is so much pixilation and discoloring, as if it was over compressed, especially during motion.
Phil, I drove both before I pulled the trigger on a 2020 manual. The DCT is good, especially if you drive in a lot of traffic, but the manual is way more fun, engaging and involving for the driver. Plus I saved around $8,000 going with the manual.
@@dougmaverick3287 I have yet to drive the manual but yeah, the DCT is very good, I just wouldn't get an auto in a smaller hot hatch. If I want a cruiser car for traffic, I'll get something more like a Lexus LS instead. I def want to drive the manual sometime soon!
I thought VNDCT has a lower curb weight than its main rival CTR. Assuming with less HP than CTR the VNDCT makes it up for weighing less than 3K. VNDCT actually weighs in exactly the same. Is the 30+ HP worth the extra $5k 🤔.
I would love to upgrade my 2016 Veloster Turbo with the DCT to a 2021 Veloster N DCT. I've owned the car for 3.5 years now and I have to agree that, while the 3 door hatch is an interesting concept, I think the large driver's side door makes it a little more difficult to park in a tight garage. That being said, I love it and I'd still buy it again based on the price vs the Fiesta and Focus STs at the time I was purchasing. I have heard other channels talk about the DCT model's exhaust not sounding nearly as good as the manual and I've seen a few bolt up the manual exhaust on the DCT. I'm curious just how much of a difference it makes lined up next to one another in person.
Was going to order a i30N DCT as my new company car here in the U.K. but Hyundai have taken so long to launch it that I had to order another GTI. I went for the GTI Clubsport.

It really does feel like 2 different cars. Of course once you find your custom settings that works for you, that’s pretty much all you use. Unless ripping it at a track or driving your parents around.
Awesome to hear as I continue to contemplate a purchase. This DCT in combination with the "Jekyll and Hyde" modes really does seem to be the best of both worlds. Excited to go for a test drive soon.
what cold start issues do you get?
@@supwitaids1 so sometimes it cold starts a little rough, and if you have it on N mode or custom mode with all the engine bits on full sport+ it’s a bit jerky when the engine isn’t warmed up yet. Again really not a big deal at all.
You can swap the new seats in. The problem will be finding a set.
@@Booshka823 there’s a guy on Instagram who purchased them direct from Hyundai. They sell all the OEM N parts like upgraded forged wheels and the seats. The seats actually have an even nicer suede inner part instead of the cloth on the factory illuminated seats. Cost? Probably astronomically high.
Now can a dealership in my city PLEASE get a DCT Veloster N in stock!? I have been wanting to test drive one since late last year. This is the perfect combination of a hot hatch from everything I've watched/read, and the 10 year warranty is enough to keep my Hyundai/Kia group recall worries at bay.
Ever find one? A dealership by me has a '22 marked up to $37k. Yikes
@@teirvin no and they are out of production now. Elantra N is selling at MSRP + “mandatory” dealer installed clear bra, tint, etc for $2,500. That makes the Elantra N over $38k OTD

Really nice of then to update the infotainment unlike the japanese.
I would really like those silver accents on the ac vents like on the last years elantra. Very simple yet very effective.
is the car to car rolling shots flipping between greyscale and color a camera issue or a youtube/editing software hated the footage issue?
That was not intentionally at all. I didn't lay a filter over that shot. Seems like a Premiere error after the update or maybe a YT error. Unfortunately, not an uncommon problem with editing software. - ZK
I wonder if the warranty department said make that over-boost button less enticing to press? Im guessing there were many meetings arguing about it.
@LPF Yeah, I think that’s the point Matthew is making. Make it less enticing so that people don’t use it as it will cause more problems and cost Hyundai more money with all the warranty repairs.
You're dead right. That's something I would've argued about in a meeting lol. Some things that seem so simple have had a stupid amount of arguments over.
I think the button is to much of a gimmick just add 15 to 20 more HP to the engine stock toss the button and call it a day.
@@cindysue5474 I guarantee some component has in the tech description lifetime limit x (x+10% for up to 100h over lifetime max 1m per occourance) so the engineers said well technically we can run at +5% fuel delivery at press of button. I work for tier 1 auto supplier and most of out requirements have similar clauses. Otherwise the 15 extra HP for full lifetime would be some robustness package with additional piece price.
Haha, I'm certain I'll be pressing it a bit more often if it had a grinning devil emoji on it rather than "GNS" on that button.
Should try the "rally car" style launch control with this DCT
2 step?
This car is so good. Every other manufacturer needs to get it together and give people what they want like Hyundai. Good prices, insane warranties, easy to maintain and looks good. Fun to drive is just a bonus after that I think.
NICE Hyundai’s been killing it lately
The Nixie tube skeuomorphic radio is cool!
Points for id'ing nixie tubes 👍
Awesome review! You got the 0-60 of 4.8 correct. Thats according to Car and driver test! I'm enjoying my 2021 Veloster n DCT. Now with 900 miles on it. Its fast and fun! Ill be trying out the NGS button tomorrow and maybe the launch control!

"livable enthusiasm" I think that is such a great way to describe this.
Can't wait to sell my GTI and pick one of these up! Been thinking about this car since I drove the original N on one of my favorite roads just before Covid hit. Such a great little car!
I wouldn’t sell a GTI for this, GTI’s aftermarket is top notch
@@clutch6152 I want a daily I can track and the N is a better platform for that. The N is ton more fun to drive as well. I already drive a modded GTI that can pull 1.5g laterally. It's still numb and kinda boring compared to even a stock N. I also have more confidence in the N with less grip than I do in my GTI, cause I can actually feel what the car is doing. In the gti I'm left guessing based on noise more than anything else, it's almost completely numb.
You really should go drive one. They also have a pretty good aftermarket now as well.
@@AgroAaronFpv There is no aftermarket that can fix that numb feeling in the GTI? I find that kind of strange.
@@AgroAaronFpv Oh, I didn't know about the engine too up front. It's bad for weight distribution and promotes understeer. I understand it was a sacrifice for a more spacious cabin.
Love my Elantra Sport. 4 years with it and I'm still not tired of it. Going to be keeping it around for a while. I would totally get one of these if I could pay cash for it. Unfortunately that's not possible and I'm not keen to jump into another car loan at the moment...
Aye! I'm pulling up on a year of the ES and love it. I really need to get more into mods xD.
I am so happy to see Hyundai making the cars they are now. They are killing it with the N line and have come so far from what they were in the early 2000s
What I find amazing is how they can make a solid red look so DAMN good!
I wish Hyundai would have released the i30N 4-dr hatch in Canada and the US. It would have been a great contender in the same space as the GTI. With only 3 doors and that wing, the Veloster is just a bit too aggressive for my taste.
did anyone else get any weird color issues when they swapped to a camera outside the car?
Yeah, must have been a video compression thing?
Wish speed3 would make a comeback!
They kinda did without the name. They got the new hatch with the optional AWD 2.5 turbo setup. Only in auto though which kinda turns me off because no mazdaspeed 3 came in auto only in manual option.
Fiesta ST #1, we need it back in the US.
That's freaky how the camera in the chase car renders the car and some of the surrounding scenery in color and the rest in black-and-white.
Zack mentioned it was an editing software glitch/bug.
Bought a Tucson sport 3 years ago and I absolutely love it ! I’m looking for the N Tucson !
10:37 Zak kept that little slide so neutral 👌
5:40 couldn't say it better Zack 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Foot-pound or Pound-foot works either way since it’s multiplied force over distance
Wow. Great job, Hyundai.
Own a DCT in Black with over 2100 miles and enjoy driving it everyday!!
It's good
I wish I could afford this car, best hot hatch out there. I had to settle for a Corolla hatchback which I’m very happy with but nowhere near the performance. Difficult to find roads where you can get to use all that performance. Only negative on the N, at least for me, is the crackling and popping.
What about the Leon seat cupra 300?
As someone who owns a 2018 Swift and actually being on a frezny with the new i30 N Perf, which I am getting in few months, I am so pissed that the Veloster is not being sold in EU countries. Most likely I would go for that over the new i30N Facelift, but hey. The fact alone that we are talking about Performance quality cars, HYUNDAI cars, says alot for the company.
13:42. I'm just here for the safe passing and sporting but not obnoxious exhaust. Some day you should do a canyon descent colllab with SAFA Brian.
@@corey31 no AWD :-(
You guys have some crazy compression issues going on with your externally mounted cams lately. Gotta increase that bitrate!
Ikr! I though for some reason It went down to 480p for a sec
Waiting for the new Elantra N with four doors 👊🙏💯🏁

Great review guys, the two take format is a great model. ( Color correction issue on upload?)

This is my next car.. unless the Elantra N (not the N Line model) changes my mind.
Awesome car, I still can't gel with the doors. Just make it a coupe or 4 doors. No one is cramming kids or more than a few bags in there regardless.
Was that a Taycan Cross Turismo in the background?

I thought I’d never say this but I am slowly moving from a Honda guy to a Hyundai guy.
I look forward to the Santa Cruz version of this, so I can annoy so called car people and defend 1st gen Ridgeline owners haha
I still can't bring myself out of the 'but it's a Hyundai/Kia' camp 😐
However, I can't deny how cool this (and the Stinger/G70) is..
I've always favored the German autos. Maybe I just need to go drive one??
Yes. Yes, you do.
Love my manual veloster n. Came from a nd miata. The veloster is the perfect daily
Bought a 2021 manual very recently, should be taking it to the track very soon for my final verdict, but so far it's not just hype for sure ! It's veeeery good, and it makes a great daily as well, as long as you run the suspension in Normal lol.
Biermann hopefully request Hyundai to make the Genny Coupe/sport coupe again so he can make a A full on crazy sport car again.
Have you seen Genesis?
Matt can certainly drive. If I was riding with him if chicken handle was a lump of coal it would be a diamond by the time I got out of the car. Personal wish list, Kona N manual
Is it bad that as a die hard Honda enthusiast, I feel like my next car is going to be a DCT Hyundai Veloster N over a Type R?
I think I'm having a problem with mine. I put the gear lever into N mode for extra power, and the car doesn't go anywhere. It just revs like crazy. Any tips?
Hell yeah
You try turning it off, waiting 5 minutes then turning it back on again?
Maybe try shifting it into "P" for "power mode".
If you go to M you'll get more power
Another great review but something is up with your camera recording or encoding, even at 4k (2160p60) there is so much pixilation and discoloring, as if it was over compressed, especially during motion.
Definitely exporting with a really low bit rate.
Everybody says stick. Then give y'all a DCT and y'all say WOW
I don't think I'd get a VN with a DCT, ever, but I'd love the manual. I drove the DCT and it was great but I missed having a clutch pedal

Damn that canyon is beautiful, so is the car
I wouldn't mind driving this !
Was going to order a i30N DCT as my new company car here in the U.K. but Hyundai have taken so long to launch it that I had to order another GTI. I went for the GTI Clubsport.
