Great review, Matt! As a 2021 6-speed manual owner I can’t agree more with how much fun this car is. Your review of the manual sealed the deal for me on purchasing this car and I’m so glad I did. Puts a huge smile on my face every time I get into it.

Garrett, does the rear visibility not bother you at all? That's my main concern with the car, otherwise it seems like a no-brainer, especially with the 6 speed you got. And which color did you get?

If you are on the fence about this car over the GTI, Camaro, Mustang, Civic Si/R, Mazda3 turbo, or used versions of: BMW2, Merc C/A classes, Audi A3, go test drive this. Seriously. I own/owned: ‘18 Camaro ZL1, ‘16 S63 AMG coupe, ‘14 E350, ‘00 SL500, etc and drove many more cars, most recently my friend’s 991.2 C2S. I traded in my former daily E350 for the Veloster N w a DCT. It is such a fun car and looks so good in person. A remarkable car really. Test drive it and you will have a hard time picking the competitors.

I’ve decided to get a Veloester N manual as my next car, pretty much the only performance mod I’d do is swap the wheels and tires for an 18 inch wheel and some PS4S tires for summer and Blizzaks for winter and then I think it’d be a perfect little daily! Thanks for the amazing reviews over the years!

    • @dsher503
      @dsher503 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Are blizzaks the best winter tires you’ve driven? I’m a religious Michelin guy so I put ps4s on all my cars but I’ve heard some good things about Blizzaks. I’d lean Alpin just to stay with Michelin but if the Bridgestones are that good I’d consider them for winter. I’m in Portland, OR for reference so our winters are pretty mild all things considered.

Bought my 21 DCT about a month ago and Matt nails every talking point about this car! This is the most thorough review of the Veloster N DCT on TH-cam.
Mine came with Pilot Sport 4 A/S and they're pretty confidence inspiring and do really well in wet conditions. Although if I could change anything about the car it would be to move to 18 inch wheels with thicker sidewall tires for a little more rim protection and a slightly softer ride. Otherwise I plan to keep it stock for the warranty.
I've used NGS as a "push to pass" button on two lane highways (we have a lot of them in TX), the biggest benefit being a one touch button to get the car into the lowest gear. I think the ideal time to hit NGS for a quick 0-60 is right at the top of first gear.
Overall, really happy with this car and excited to autocross it next weekend! Thanks for the awesome review Matt!

@@SaintMecha you’re exaggerating. Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few months then you’d know there’s a massive microchip shortage that has halted the production of many new cars which in turn has increased the demand for used cars that has caused the prices to increase dramatically. Stop dreaming. Even if you could afford a new or used veloster N, which I do believe you can. You wouldn’t be here posting about how a car you don’t own is such a good deal. @@karleslit7975 show me where you can buy one from a dealer for msrp. Lol they may tell you that until you get to the dealer and sit down. 😂. The previous post is right and the car market is one of the many things being affected by this chip shortage. Which is supposed to last until late 2022, do to all the backed up orders now. In regarding the car market it is in the sellers favor right now and will be for sometime. Are you not aware of this? Idk how you can't be. As many factories have been shutdown or put on hold do to this semicownductor chip shortage. Ford, Vw, Jaguar & Land Rover have already stated production to be cut in half this quarter alone. Highly effected vehicles are Mustang,F150, and Escape to name a few. Many workers laid off, this has been happening since late March. Go see how much your car is worth and I can guarantee if it is something recently new, you can get very close to what you paid for it new. For instance. I bought my N this time LAST year. Car has 6k miles on it(I have another car I daily an srt4). I bought it cash OTD for 30,500. Right now if I wanted to I could sell it instantly for a quoted price of $28,500. This is crazy. So for $2k I got to drive an N around for a little over a year,, if I sell it. It's very tempting to sell as I truly do not "need" the car.

Always liked these cars! Looks like you really enjoyed that drive, nice review Matt! 👍 When they first came out I was choosing between this, a Golf R, and (yea this one is out of left field), a Fiat 124 Spider Abarth. Owning an M3 in the past, having Albert Biermann be part of the Veloster N was great. I ended up choosing a Golf R DSG (first automatic in over 10yrs). Loved it, went Stage 2, shifted so damn fast…but after a few years I really missed the engagement and fun factor of a true manual car. So not long ago I got myself into a Fiat 124 Spider Abarth. I think they look absolutely stunning, and since I always regretted selling my S2000 in the past, the 124 really grabbed my attention. Super happy I went with it; although it’s not the fastest, it’s definitely one of the funnest and never fails to put a smile on your face! Currently tuning it up. But a Veloster N would make a great second car to have and enjoy for me I feel (maybe once prices go down I’ll scoop one up); or a great only car as well depending on what you need.
Launch control with a dual-clutch is fun as hell though 😈 That is one thing I miss about the Golf R DSG…just being able to launch it with ease whenever you want.

Matt, I definitely get lots of understeer in my 2020 manual N, you're just not pushing it hard enough.
I test drove both the manual and DCT and the manual was just way more fun, and engaging and involving for the driver.
I couldn't agree more Matt, the Veloster N put the biggest smile on my face compared to the competition.
    The sound alone is intoxicating.
I test drove the Civic Type R and it sounded like a vacuum cleaner.
Plus I much preferred the smaller size of the N. It's like a little go kart.
The VW GTI is just boring compared to the N.

@@jonathantee5355 the shifter setup like a manual for example the lower gears are on the top while the higher gears are on the bottom this helps follow the momentum of the car as you're accelerating and decelerating
However many other manufactures like BMW have it the other way around on their auto where you shift up to gear up and shift down to gear down but Porsche has it the right way as it's suppose to shift up to gear down and shift down to gear up as that follows the momentum of the car and Hyundai got it right with the Veloster N

I've been talking about the Veloster (non-N) variants. But I think the 4th-generation Mazda3 Hatchback is a much better option than the Velosters. Even the Mazda3 Turbo in the same price range of the Veloster N, unless you want the nicer sound of the Veloster N's exhaust or its DCT or manual transmission.
It's clear that the Veloster has aged quickly in today's auto industry where technology and electronics has finally had a much faster rate of change. Look at the lighting on the exterior of today's Veloster. Look at the infotainment and the instrument cluster in it; it's practically the same on the Turbo Ultimate and N model Hyundai Veloster as it is on Hyundai's entry-level Venue. Hyundai's and Kia's own latest models of the last two years have also created a significant gap in interior technology and material quality between the 2nd-generation Veloster.
It has "only" been three years since the 2nd-gen Veloster's release, but it's time for the Veloster to get some sleaker exterior styling, better exterior lighting, and a higher quality, more high-tech interior on par with Hyundai's latest. Otherwise the current Veloster model range is just not compelling enough; unless you're only after the Veloster N and its exhaust and DCT or manual transmission.

@@PerfectCode Ah, well as far as the non-N goes, there aren't many hatchbacks to choose from which might be part of why they didn't feel the need to do things like put the 10 inch screen in. The Subaru Impreza for example is just as dated.
The Mazda3 hatch is nice, but keep in mind that all those nicer things drive the price up a lot. Horsepower wise it sits between the regular 2.0 Veloster and the Veloster Turbo, so it's a trade-off either way. Veloster 2.0 Premium is 5k less than a loaded Mazda3 Hatch, and a Turbo is about the same price as the Mazda3 with 15 more horsepower. Driving the two vehicles is a very different experience too, the Mazda feels much heavier and less sporty than the Veloster. I can see how on paper they seem comparable, but in my opinion they are tuned with very different missions in mind. All it takes for a prospective buyer to decide is a quick sit and test drive in the Mazda to see that they're trying to make it a Mercedes A-Class/Audi A3 competitor, not a Veloster competitor. Same goes with the Mazda3 Turbo, much less dynamic than the Veloster N. They have very different buyers, one wants a soft, luxurious car and the other wants a simpler, more traditional hatchback experience.
Hyundai is kind of stuck because having a non-N being more expensive than the N doesn't make sense, and they deliberately left things like heated seats out of the N to keep the price down because the American buyer just wants the power and performance at an affordable price. Based on what they said, it doesn't seem like Hyundai has many Veloster buyers that want a luxury car interior. Honestly, it sounds like they don't sell many Velosters either so I honestly doubt it'll get a 3rd generation. Adding on features to drive up the price tag won't help sales in my opinion. Just my thoughts on the matter, sorry for the book lol.

As someone who drives a used ES350, torque steer off the line tickles my jimmies in a good way. Tire slipping for days is not fun, but with an E-LSD at least the Veloster N would be less slippy off the line. But there's something a bit dangerous feeling about torque steer that reminds you that you still need to pay attention to go fast.

Spot on review Matt! I bought the 2021 N almost three weeks ago and it's fun every time! I did a shakedown cruise by driving down to VA (a 6 hour trip for me). For yuks I drove in ECO mode (didn't feel like it honestly) the whole way to help break in the engine in and save on gas (Thanks Pipeline Ransomware Hackers!). I managed to get 39 mpg according to the onboard comp (I have photo evidence!). On the way back I was less conservative and still managed to get around 36 mpg. When that was done, went back to Sport & Sport + and wiped away those numbers real quick!
Thanks for the review and the info on the tires-I just swapped out the summer tires for all weather Michelin Pilot Sport tires and while they get the job done, feels a tad squishy when compared to the OE summer tires. Beats skidding off the road in a heavy rain though! Thanks again!

Well, if any motoring enthusiast ever says a DCT makes a better car than a manual, they are categorically NOT a motoring enthusiast... Yes it makes a quicker accelerating car, but never a better car.
If you love manuals, and love performance, you'll love he DCT... for a while... then you'll end up missing the gear changing and that relationship between you and the car that only a manual can create... that enthusiasts driving experience only a manual can provide.
Hyundai really do make some terrific cars these days... and it's great that this comes in both DCT and manual... as there are people who can't drive manuals, or just don't have a manual license... and the DCT is the next best thing after a manual.

I don't understand the NGS gimmick. If it's only providing a few more lb-ft of torque like that, it can't possibly be too much for internals to handle, so why limit it to just a few seconds? Why not just have that on all the time when the car is switched to Sports mode?

    • @frf1670
      @frf1670 3 ปีที่แล้ว

One, they should have just made it a straight-on coupe. That rear seat is for small children, on very short trips; at best. If you need to get a car-seat back there, buy a base trim VW GTI instead.
Two, the radio is garbage. Talking in terms of sound quality.
Three, the interior plastics are as cheap as an Econo-box from the 1990s.
Four, it takes Premium fuel. (BTW, GTI makes its power on Regular.)
Honestly, if all you care about is performance and the exterior looks to match; this is your ride if you aren't rich. If you want a Sleeper that is more pragmatic to live with on a daily basis, especially if you're a young man with a wife and baby; get the GTI. Interior quality holding up over time? Honestly, they're both going to be terrible.
