2020 Veloster N Review | Not Great, Not Terrible

  • We review the good and bad of the new Hyundai Veloster N and R Spec. This car is a new breed of competent, affordable fun hatchbacks designed to be a dual-purpose machine. The Honda Civic Type R and Golf R are the closest competitors now that the Focus RS is gone in America. While there are rear-wheel-drive options in this price range, like the Miata, BRZ and Mustang, the Veloster is supposed to be that attainable daily driver that is accessible to anyone.

      last year when i got an oil change, i got a 2018 Countryman w/the JCW Sports exhaust kit as a loaner.. low and behold.. 3 months ago i went back in and traded my R58 in for a custom built 2020 MINI JCW Countryman. custom orders are no problem w/MINI. hopefully Hyundai gets their act together cuz i loved the original Velostar but didn't get one at the time due to low hp and sports feel. but now i'd consider it if i was a younger man. hehe

    • @roboticvenom1935
      @roboticvenom1935 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, it's a great car but I went with the GTI because it's cheaper and a better overall package for sure. But if you want raw performance with the compromise of drivability and practicality, refinement, etc. then the N is for you.
      I also appreciated the much better aftermarket on the mk7 GTI and the better potential of the chassis and MQB engine.

    • @meatblade3490
      @meatblade3490 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@roboticvenom1935 n has superior drivability and the same practicality. GTI is for an older demographic that can't handle a more focused driver's car - same the people who pick an R over a TyoeR. One wants the reputation, the other wants the real experience.
      Which is fine, GTI sells incredibly well as the best Audi for the money.

    • @roboticvenom1935
      @roboticvenom1935 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@meatblade3490 No it's that they prefer it, it's a daily driver at the end of the day. It's not even close in terms of interior, quality, refinement, etc. Not to mention the extra has mileage which saves loads of money every year, and the N costs more money.
      If you're into tuning the GTI motor, for one, has an actual aftermarket scene lmao and has crazy potential for tuning, unlike the N which is at its limit not conservative like a proper German car. That's why the Focus ST gets left in the dust by the GTI.
      It's an overall package, and when you consider price, the GTI will win most of the time hence why it's still recommended and is the go to.

    • @meatblade3490

      They shouldn’t have to be Genesis dealers to not be awful. I live up in the Blue Ridge Mountains so it’s not like we’re in an affluent area or anything and I buy Fords. Our two Ford dealerships have been great experiences every time I’ve dealt with them. I hear the same thing about our Toyota, Honda, Chevy and Ram/Dodge/Jeep dealerships. Yet our Hyundai/Kia dealerships are universally panned by everyone that lives here. They each have under 3 stars on google reviews and those reviews are full of ridiculous horror stories that you would only expect to hear about the most sleazy used car lots. In a Southern US area where word of mouth seriously matters, they just don’t sell that many vehicles around here because of it. They are making great cars these days but they have a serious corporate culture issue in their dealerships that they need to address if they’re serious about shedding their reputation from the 90’s and early 2000’s.

    I've bought three new Hyundais from dealerships in the past 12 years, an Accent, a Veloster Turbo, and a Santa Fe just recently. My experiences have been great with my dealers. Not sure what the hell is going on in the midwest as I bought the first one in Florida, Veloster in Colorado, and the new Santa Fe in Virginia, and they've all been helpful and let me test drive whatever I wanted.
    They all were open to spending time answering my questions, respected me when I said I didn't want to pay for a bunch of extra dumb shit I didn't want or need, and when I was ready to leave they of course wanted me to buy, but weren't too pushy or anything and just gave me their cards and asked me to call them when I was ready to come back in.

      if I had to guess, some dealerships do not want their top of the line sport-focused cars driven hard. They have such a limited allocation with the Veloster Ns that they can't afford to have their stock ridden hard and w/o lube. I had a subaru dealership state to me that they don't allow their WRXs to be test driven. And I'm a middle aged guy with no points on the license and a great driving record. (I'm about as low risk as you'll get for an interested WRX buyer). I won't buy from dealerships that won't offer up a test drive.

    I did 6.3 sec in a veloster N with 250hp stock (launch.control - mechanic transmition), so 6.8 sec on a performance package, dual clutch it can be possible minimal you get 5.6 sec, i saw many videos ( both versions 250 and 275hp) and the media throws that results, you need to destroy the pedal ( in the good sense my friend)
    And finally you can improve the car with intakes, downpipes, intercooler, ecu system ( at least $3k) and you'll get easy 310 hp.

Type r markup, VN markdown. Secondly, reliability wise, VN wins a lot! Not just a little, it’s huge. Maybe the reason is type r built in UK while VN build in Korean. Your dealership experience was really different from mine. They brought one out, adjusted the seats for my tall wife, handed me the keys and said see you soon. I had a similar dealership experience to yours at a local VW dealer, will never go back there.
    That's one thing many reviewers miss when doing the Veloster, just how roomy it is in the front. I'm just a touch under 6ft and fit in most cars easily. My wife is 6'1", and there are a lot of cars where she simply does not fit. Most of the Subaru line up, much of the Mazda selection, Cr-Vs, Sedonas, Corollas and Jeeps, and surprisingly a lot of Dodge trucks, and we both get comfortable in a Golf but neither of us have head or leg room in a Jetta, those things are for tiny people. But she had tons of room in the Veloster.
    I'd Love a Type R, but in all honesty, if I lived in the city right now, I'd already own a Veloster.

    Girlfriend got one of these (2019) in base spec with automatic trans for $15000, the dealer definitely sucked, but for a NEW car with an amazing warranty, the price was perfect. I can definitely see how adding power would help a lot, but even in base spec, it absolutely lives up to expectations at 15k.

Manual transmissions are disappearing from the marketplace. I don’t want rev matching and easy launch and hill assist. But if it gets someone else into a manual I’m all for it.

    I tried to just see a Veloster N at a dealer and was told they wouldn't show it without a deposit and commitment to buy. For a car that competes with a Golf, Civic and Focus, that is pure insanity. I heard similar stories about the Kia Stinger and now based off the discounts those dealers are offering, it looks like they can't even give away those cars. I view Hyundai / Kia's product as top tier, but their dealer network effectively makes them a lower tier brand.

It is definitely not the best hot hatch...it is very skewed towards someone looking for a very specific driving experience who is okay with the tradeoffs. I was looking for that driving experience. It's a lot of car for the money and a total riot to drive. I am willing to bet that we are going to get a better Golf R and WRX STI partially thanks to this car, as an added bonus.

    Find the car for 30k WITHOUT all the performance stuff... you can find a VN WITH the performance pack for 29.5k. I feel like this was a poor review whereas your guys' content is generally pretty good. This is the best car on sale for under 30k, period. This car's truest competitor is the Golf GTI which costs 4k more for the gti with the lsd. And this car still blows that car out of the water with it's performance and warranty. Comparing this car to a Type-R should speak for itself, no it nots as capable or as useable but it's $6,000 cheaper.

    • @npaul4171
      @npaul4171 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah this review seemed kind of off for someone who is generally concentrating heavily on driving dynamics and engagement. The fact that so many compare it to the legendary (and notably more capable) Type R speaks to how well the driving experience in this car has been nailed, as it would otherwise not even be compared. It is such a different animal than other Veloster models for that matter. It's far from perfect, but it accomplishes what it sets out to do spectacularly well.

    Loving your reviews!! Your reviews actually help people decide on a car they may be interested in... Like you said about test drives and how it's such a pain in the ass to get a dealer to let you test drive these higher-spec cars, you can't take a car out and actually drive it like you want to. Your reviews help close the gap between the dealer and how it'll be to own one. Keep up the great work! Also loving the new camera angles in the wheel wells and such. I recently purchased a 2020 Civic Si, my decision was based on your review. How bout that for impact.
