I like how your reviews are based on driving in everyday situations looking at everyday issues that affect the majority of drivers. Well done! I'm looking forward to see you with the Seal in a busy carpark
Everyday driving results in a better review. I've watched a couple Seal Performance AWD reviewers push the Performance version and then criticize its performance. That's fine if you're reviewing for track work or the like. Near pointless for every day and even spirited (within the law) driving. Not sure either how useful the dynamic suspension is on the Performance. Seems at best it may be a slight improvement - and so it should, I guess. I'm still deciding between the Premium and Performance versions. 10k saving is quite substantial. Only 6k in the UK, but the base price over there is well above what we pay here. I certainly don't need the power increase from 230kw to 390kw, but I've owned 3 Subaru AWD (including a 2000 WRX) vehicles and a Mazda CX-7 Diesel, so like the advantages of AWD in "normal" driving. Still haven't ruled out a M3 either. Decisions, decisions... Waiting to test both Seals here in Hobart. Small market so not high priority to have demos on tap at the moment
@@Paul-ow9dd You are right, you are unlikely to utilise the full potential of the Performance model most of the time. However, not that long ago, you'd have to spend north of $200,000 on a Mercedes, BMW or Porsche to get this kind of performance, so I couldn't help myself. The Seal Performance is a bargain. BTW, I've already clocked my car at 3.7 from 0-100km/h, better than manufacturer claims.
@@olivertheworld8991except it doesn't: speed sign detection is not completely consistent in either BYD or Tesla, and therefore if the speed alerts are intrusive it becomes a major problem.
Test drove the Performance version today WOW!!! I have a Dynamic on order and picking it up in a few weeks - Super stoked with your amazing channel (I watched your Live on launch night thanks!!) This is going to be great for me as a new Seal owner - thanks :)
Thanks for the video Tom. I understand that the ADAS systems are required for 2023 NCAP five star approval. However, I don't think some of these systems in the Seal work at all, it's not just the problem that they are too sensitive or intrusive. The systems I have tested so far are the lane keep assist and lane departure assist. I tried to drive with everything turned on as per default and they simply just don't work as intended, and the intervention appears to be random, as you noted in your video. I also tried to use autopilot and the car kept on attempting to drive me off the road as soon as the road had a curve. It would therefore seem that the lane detection algorithms in the car simply don't work. This would explain all of the problems above.
Having owned a Tesla for many years and driven many press cars, these lane centring features are mostly only Level 2 autonomy which means there is no way I would let the car steer for me. They are intended to be an aid only and if treated as such the ICC will work just fine for long drives - I’ve experienced it in the Atto 3 from Sydney to Melbourne and return 👍 I’ll demonstrate in a future uncut end to end freeway drive shortly on ICC in the Seal
The tesla highland autopilot handled the drive from Killarney Heights over Roseville Bridge all the way until the acute left turn onto clive Street on the way back to the dealership. The seal was all over the place near Alexandria. Hence my comments regarding buying the dynamic over the premium. The seal is worth 50k. If you go over 60k, get the tesla with properly calibrated autonomoy software. Stalks, Android auto and faux leather are legacy upgrades and worth didly squat compared to tesla software.
@@stevenleonards4843 I can perform the same test in the Seal from Forestville to Chatswood Tesla on ICC 😁 To be fair the roads around Alexandria aren’t great so I’m not surprised with how the Seal performed! Did you get a chance to do a Highland AP test around Alexandria? I’ll have to double check my original Tesla test drive vid I did when they gave me the press car loaner to try
@@LudicrousFeed Yes, I wouldn't close my eyes with the Tesla on autopilot either! But from my limited experience with the Seal so far, I still think the Tesla is far ahead. I hope BYD improve these systems via OTA updates because the Seal is fundamentally a great car.
@@stevenleonards4843 All three variants of the Seal are great value. The issues with the ADAS systems and autopilot need to be kept in persecutive, when you consider how the Seal is fundamentally a fantastic car. What its owners need to do is offer constructive feedback to BYD and hopefully they improve the systems via OTA updates. It's easy to forget that Tesla has had many problems, and their systems have matured over countless updates.
We have had our Atto 3 for just over a year and we were pretty happy. However, and in the last month or so a software update changed all the sounds to be much louder and more annoying. It no longer seems to honor the setting to only vibrate and not beep when it thinks you touch a line. Also, some sounds like cruise control disengaging were removed 🤷♂️. The traffic sign recognition has never worked properly. Specifically it never worked for three digit speeds and sometime displays an undocumented error symbol.
I think BYD are going to be put under a lot more pressure in Australia to fix problems, now that Seal owners are in the mix. Not only is spending $70,000 on a car a fair bit of money, many Seal owners are going to be past or current Tesla owners, so they will have a very high expectations. Tesla has spoilt us with their OTA updates and have set a new benchmark for the auto industry. The rest of the pack have to step up. Gone are the days when my local Mercedes Benz dealer would tell me to just upgrade to the latest model, if there was something on my current car which didn't quite work properly.
This sums it all up. Byd the new entrant is nothing short of negligent, bodgy quality manufacturing processes and a Infotainment sys. that is not fit for purpose.. at all yet the shysters push the crap cars out. They also have the worst record of customer complaints or second to Mercedes. Don't touch byd... they are ripping off consumers.. spread the word.
@@pragmatist165 To be fair, my complaints are just nitpicks. The Atto is still by far the best car I have driven and I would take it any day over the VW, Hyundai, and Subaru's people I know have.
I find the speed detection amazingly accurate when it sees a sign. The issue is that it doesn't realise the change when you turn off one road onto another. (Eg from a 20km/h car park onto a 60km/h main road) If they can integrate the GPS data into the TRS, then this feature will be excellent.
I agree about GPS and map data. There are too many instances where signage alone is not enough. But it's hard to know which "instruction" should take precedence. We take for granted the experience and "intuition" it sometimes requires to figure out what speed we should be travelling at.
Totally Agree Mork. The system actually works well in China because they use Chinese Gaode Map system with very detailed roads data, it can even include navigation info in the Hud. However in Australia the map data is a bit lacking. I hope BYD can purchase more detailed road data.
As always, excellent remarks. Funny as it is, those sound warnings -- they do not bother me! As long as I know what it is all about? No problem with me. Kicks into the steering wheel was!!! And thanks for You? - for Your lesson -- no problems now. Have a Happy New Year Tom! May the Power be with You! Adam. Bye.
Looks like another dory with Short term memory. Haha. Thanks for your review. Software Just need a little refinement and TLC. However thank goodness there is OTA, if leave it to legacy, it will the next vehicle upgrade.
Most car accidents are caused by speeding, running pass red lights, dozing off/ sleeping while driving. Using phones while still driving, drunk drivers.. so on, these alerts helps reduce accidents.. period.
I had an Atto 3 hire car for a week. I liked the Driver display on Dark Mode and the Infotainment Screen on Light Mode (particularly when using the Maps). Unfortunately, I couldn't work out how to set the mode of the two screens independently (suspect you can't?). During one drive, I did have a Dark driver display and Light infotainment screen at the same time (software glitch perhaps?). Sadly, it reverted to normal (both screens the same) when I next started the car, but it was good while it lasted.
Unfortunately, @Zelig you can't have one screen on light and the other on dark. What you experienced was a software glitch. We experienced the same until we restarted the vehicle and then both screens were the same. Would be great to have each screen lit differently. Should be a simple software addition. Generally, I keep the main screen on light, but have reduced the brightness to 15%. Of a nighttime I let it default to dark. But I wish the navigation map was able to be left in light mode when using dark mode. I find the map nearly impossible to read in dark mode. Latest v1.7 hasn't added independent screen light mode settings. It has changed the pedestrian warning. It's no longer an audible tone, Now, it sounds like the sound of the brake pads on the rotors when you press the brake at extremely low speed. Weird "scrapy" sound to use instead of the tone they had, almost like there is some fault with the noise generator. Not documented in the changelog. It seems a lot of changes haven't made it to the info screen when downloading the update - or after the update has been applied - Can't remember.
Legacy Car makers except Kia/Hyundai implementation is subtle yet effective. The driver assist feature is supposed to assist the driver not become the driver (yet still does a half arse job)
I generally turn off LKA in most press cars I test … I really don’t like having the car correct my steering - Lane centring (steering wheel icon) is a different matter and I find it works reasonably well - will demonstrate soon
You keep mentioning the future software updates. As a 1 year Atto 3 and Tesla MS owner, let me say that Tesla updates every couple of weeks as you know. Byd is a couple every year, so I wouldn’t be holding out for an update in the near future and when they do, it seems they break more than they fix. Been waiting for wireless Apple CarPlay since we got our car in February last year. Still nothing and the steering assist, although seemingly better, is still not worth trusting. I decided, based on my wife’s Atto 3 that when updating my model S, I couldn’t live with the poor byd automation. I ordered the new M3 LR, even though it’s basically $20k more. I’ll be looking forward to more of your reviews of the Seal. Keep up the great work.
The speed setting could use a threshold before it starts flashing/chiming in, not a 1 over the speed limit.I didn't see any "trucks only" on those 40 signs, so not sure if BYD's interpretation is going to be any more flexible than the cops if they tag you there. 50 when otherwise unsigned. :) Personally the most distracting feature misfiring in the Dolphin is the cross traffic & collision avoidance alert/braking. That thing goes off when I am already coming to a stop, in narrow roads after I pass a parked car, in double turning lanes, and a few other false positive situations.
I have had my seal for 3 days, tried the minimize way, still not good, for no apparent reason lane keeping has a freak out. yesterday and today I turned everything off when I power up, it takes 10 seconds and driving experience is wonderful, after all I have been driving for 55 years and I know how to stay in lane and there is a speedometer in front of me I can read! I will use this method until byd really fixes this. The video driving on urban roads I better than country driving, it can’t read grassy verges and trees seem to spook it.
The 3rd issue when switching off the systems (1st issue is it's unreliable/annoying, 2nd is they come back after a restart), is that you get a warning on the dash for every one you switch off so you constantly have 2 or 3 red symbols.
A little off-topic about ADAS and the M2 tollway. This tollway is dangerous if lane departure-assistance or lane-centering is enabled in my Gen-4 Kluger, and I expect many other makes/models. The shiny black bitumen dribbles used to cover cracks in the tollway confuse ADAS. They can cause false alerts and sudden swerving, particularly early mornings, late afternoons or in the rain.
Hmm I know the part you’re talking about and it has seemed ok with other EVs I’ve tested on it so far including Tesla Autopilot multiple times … apart from the fact that the rumbles make it a very noisy rough ride!
Any idea if that incoming software update will save the driver's settings vs merely tuning how noisy the ADAS is or adjusting the TSR model? I really just want to keep the TSR alerts turned off ('intelligent speed limit information') but not the recognition itself, and absolutely have to keep ELKA off as it sent me off the road towards a tree once already while turning right over a crest with oncoming traffic but would like to keep the LKA warning on
Is my understanding that BYD has no trip planner, especially relating to charges, correct? If that's correct, how are you dealing with this issue? Thanks
Yes it’s a huge limitation currently without a native EV trip planner. It’s a combo of Waze and PlugShare at the moment. But I’m working on a possible solution using ABRP so stay tuned
When I picked up my atto 3 in Brisbane a BYD girl who gave me the keys went through the settings with me and set it all up, so it is all less annoying. It was all very quick, but I think she set it all up as per your video + normal blinker sound. I was driving not sure what ppl were even complaining about. I wonder why not all BYD dealers knowing the issue set it all up like this for all customers.
Ah yes P-Platers all I ever see is them speeding around where I live, don't think the Police are pulling enough of them over and having them lose their license. Good to see NSW Rozzers are doing that. Heard a number of people commenting about the wipers as well in the Tesla's. The blind spot indicator I can see it no issue at all. Does it have the v1.7 update that was recently launched for the Atto 3? With three cars now an all of them have OTA capabilities guessing the versions may not be the same across all three and features obviously as I didn't know the Seal had auto-sensing wipers.
Hi Tom, have we heard anything more about a possible OTA release date for the Seal ? I'm expecting to take delivery late Feb and wondering in general if we feel BYD would have released something by then. Hard to find anything on the internet about it.
The School Zone thing, it would be much easier to have logic in the Nav that if its outside a certain time and not a weekday it wont go off, otherwise they have to program each states school holiday information plus the car needs to know where it is to access different information as each state has different holiday times, also school holiday times can change slightly year to year.
"otherwise they have to program each states school holiday information plus the car needs to know where it is to access different information as each state has different holiday times" yes, that is the duty of the programmers. Thats easy. They just have to ask father google.
For me, the recent OTA update “2401” has made a big difference: BYD Seal OTA Software Update 2401 V1.1 Australia Walkthrough and Drive th-cam.com/video/CQwmDVC7auM/w-d-xo.html
@@LudicrousFeed it will be enhanced. I have read actual posts from the NZ BYD Director where he has stated that they have a team of people from BYD in NZ right now refining the ADAS.
lane keeping assist is dangerous. On a long drive my cars habit of nudging the steering makes it feel as if you have either hit something ( a kerb or a verge) pushing the wheel or that something on the cars steering joints is wrong - this even when I am within the lines - this leads to major driver fatigue even on short journeys. The car does make mistakes so you have to steer it but you are also fighting against it - blooming awful and very exhausting. luckily my car allows this to stay off without resetting each time - this reduces fatigue both on me and the steering joints.
Mmm yes and no. I don’t enjoy Tesla’s phantom braking on highways - I’m always wary when passing trucks! Agreed otherwise it’s pretty good most of the time. BYD isn’t too bad though, I drove from Sydney to Melbourne and return again mostly on the ICC and I was pretty confident and comfortable mostly
@@LudicrousFeed I use autopilot for nearlly 95% of my drive, the only time i have had phantom breaking was once down a side street it just decided to break for no reason. The other issues is that is has trouble doing round abouts and 90 degree corners. other than that autopilot has been rock solid the more you trust it the more you correct it the more it seems to learn and not make the same mistakes.
mm I wish I could say the same about phantom braking ... Joy in the passenger seat also notices it when it occurs so I rarely use it when family are in the car otherwise I can put up with it when it's just me driving
Just be aware that turning off these safety features may cause your insurer to blame you for avoidable accidents, and in extreme cases they could refuse cover, read T&C from your particular insurer.....
Excellent advice - hence why I’ve decided to stick to within the limits of the current software ie. leaving it on vibrate only for lane keeping which is far less intrusive than the audio alerts
Has anyone suggested they do saved profiles? On restart the system defaults back to all ADAS on but when you select your saved profile it turns off the systems you don’t want. This should pass ANCAP as all systems are on when car restarts
Does the Car coast? I've driven the model 3 a few times and found the regenerative braking too hard, also coming from an ICE car, i don't like the brake lights coming on everytime i take my foot off the accelerator. Are there evs that will coast along and only apply brakes when i press the brake pedal?
You can switch off regen braking in a Tesla. You control the amount of Regen with your accelerator pedal which is way more convenient than having to change to the brake pedal. Perhaps some people need to get used to it but one pedal driving is a very nice feature. The brake light only comes on when Regen braking is significantly slowing down the vehicle. A Tesla displays brake lights on the display too.
You can set the regen on either “light” or “normal” in the Seal. In the light, there is the ability to coast somewhat which might help you transition from ICE. Other brands also have the ability to set levels of regen for those who don’t want it too harsh
Hi Tom Re suspension, Paul Maric @ Car Expert did a review on the BYD Seal in particular over sine waves in roads and came away less than impressed. It's worth checking out. Soft suspension sometimes means less control....
"less than impressed" is a bit harsh. He later states that it's a fine compromise. Also remember that those sine waves are an extreme scenario that are exaggerated to what you'd typically encounter
@jspanga Nah, you're just straight out wrong. His initial reaction at 18:20 is "yeah, that's pretty bouncy". Literally, as he's bouncing up and down with the movement of the car. He then goes on to reference the difference of the Kia EV6 with local suspension tune and the Hyundai 5 without local tune. The difference between the 2 is substantial and important if you travel outside of Aus cities. At 19:55 he goes on to state that " it's a tiny bit sloppy"
I noticed in my own Seal Performance, the bouncing over bumpy roads just about disappears above a certain speed. This gives the impression that the car is adjusting its active dampers to suit the speed. If so, it means they can further tune the suspension with a software update. BTW, only the Performance variant comes with active dampers.
will be interesting to see whether this also bears out for the dynamic and premium@@bandicoot2016. Some reviews have said that the suspension is WORSE on the performance
Why is the speedometer on the right hand side? Can you change that for it to be in the middle? Or even on the left? It sort of beats the purpose of having a binnacle.
On our Atto3 I got rid of the speed alert simply by sliding the navigation sound bar down to 0. You can turn it up again when using GPS but actually I find I can use the GPS with just the map and the blue direction line. This does not reset each time you start. I think this also stopped some other alert sound because they seem to be connected to the GPS. The speed sign on drivers display still works just no audible alerts. All this may work on the Seal. Still waiting for my car with Ocean Blue interior. Do you think the all black everything is a bit overly dark and dower?
Thanks Tom for your continuing review of this car. I'm still a bit torn by the decision between the Tesla dual motor M3 highland and the Seal Premium or Performance. I'm looking forward to your further reviews on this as I still have time to change my mind. I think the Tesla M3 is a great car especially for power, computer technology and efficiency but is let down by the overall extreme minimalism especially with some of the latest changes. The Seal seems to be a far more a comfortable, luxurious and "normal" sports sedan but suffers from the fact it is new and really untested and the technology question mark. I think Tesla has all but lost one of its main advantages being the charging network because this is now becoming available to everyone as Tesla seeks to make money from it. @@LudicrousFeed
@@kennyobe Unless you already own a Tesla, I agree it's a hard choice between the Model 3 and Seal. But ultimately, they are very different cars with different benefits and driving characteristics. It comes down to personal choice. At least the Australian market finally has a realistically priced alternative to the Model 3.
The car came with a removable sunshade Reportedly, the glass has been treated in such a way that it blocks out more heat then in the Model 3/Y apparently. I'll have to find a way to test this
The Seal roof is definitely better than the Telsa roof for heat rejection. I've had the car for over a week in the middle of summer and no need for the shade screens. The Tesla roof, on the other hand is not useable in a hot climate, IMO. I have helped fix my Model 3 by installing ceramic tint on the back half of the roof (along with the integrated rear window, of course) but I am still installing the shade screen on the front half during summer. The tint installer advised me that tinting the front half of the roof would make little difference to the overall heat rejection.
@@LudicrousFeed Thank you for your reply. It has been a concern for me, and due to the fact we havent been able to get in to a Seal yet to test it in WA, this puts my mind at rest
I may wait for another 3 4 months to see how byd seal and atto 3 do. Hopefully they are reliable enough so i can buy and used for uber. As my heart say buy seal but my brain say tesla😂
Reliability can only be commented on retrospectively. Tesla was asked the same question when they first came onto the scene and it’s through their excellent service that they’ve proven themselves over the years. All of us BYD owners are now in that same early adopter phase and I guess time will tell …
Also, you paid money for the feature, so it’s not good value if it’s not usable and needs to be disabled. It needs to be able to warn without being annoying.
Another reviewer said that if you pull the fuses and you have an accident that the tech could have avoided then you could be up for a manslaughter charge if there is a fatality.
It’s been delivered to me set to off by default and I can’t find it in the menus … I’ll do a walkthrough in an upcoming vid and maybe you all can help me look 👀
No it’s not milky but there is a bluish tinge to it. With ADAS on … driver/buyer beware Add: (17/1/24) I had another look at the glass: I agree with you, it’s slightly milky: I wonder if it’s the silver coating
It's a minor daily inconvenience that an OTA software update will hopefully fix. As Tom demonstrates, the vehicle with the settings changed, drives along the road with no major issues. As an Atto 3 owner I have my settings set so the the LKA just vibrates the steering wheel if you move out of the lane and have the traffic recognition setting set so it just flashes if you go over the speed limit. The amount of hysteria around the ADAS system in the BYD Seal is a bit over the top, in my opinion, and usually is magnified by non BYD owners. I'm sure by the time my BYD seal performance model arrives in late February, early March, these issues would have been addressed. Like all new vehicles, there is a learning curve period to understand how all the features work and setting your personal preferences if the vehicle allows you to customise the settings.
Definitely needs to be kept in perspective, the Seal is fundamentally a great car. But as a Seal Performance owner already, I'd rather problems are fixed sooner rather than later. I have also noted the Atto 3 ADAS systems and settings are not quite the same as the Seal. This may be because the Seal gained it's five star NCAP rating under 2023 rules, which are stricter.
Excellent video as per usual Tom. Whilst I am waiting for my Model 3, I have a Hybrid Haval H6 Ultra which does the same annoying things (ELK). So many complaints online about this. I like the fact that you found a compromise. I may need to go for a test drive after all in the Seal.
This car seems need a lot of learning to get the hang of it. I prefer Tesla even it costs more to buy. I can imagine the autopilot is pretty ordinary as well.
nonsense. The Seal has no learning required. I have a Tesla and a Seal. Seal is a much more interesting car to drive, better interior too. The software is simple. Even I worked it out in a short time
I arranged the layout of my apps and widgets to my preferred ones and after a couple of drives the apps and widgets return to the default layout. Does anyone have this issue?
Reducing the nagging ADAS alerts and false positives should be addressed by BYD ASAP, but turning these systems off should be done with caution as they are there for the time a driver makes potentially a serious mistake or due to inattention or simply just bad luck. We ALL have this potential, and I think all of us have had near misses (or worse) when driving. We all have the potential to fall asleep or suffer some sort of "recoverable" medical episode. Any of these systems could save the day for a driver. But I agree the system used in the Seal (and similar in the Atto 3) needs a lot of tweaking. BYD need to get it right ASAP so drivers (and I'm one of them) don't need to consider turning these systems off before each drive. We're finding with the Atto 3 that the bumper bar sensors seem to work sometimes and not others. Not sure if this is poor hardware or a software issue. Will be interesting to hear if the Seal is similar. Lane Assist has scared my wife a few times as it falsely tries to correct where she is in the lane, urgently trying to steer the car away from a wrongly perceived threat, such as thinking she is going to mow down a pedestrian walking on the side of the road. The traffic speed sign recognition is next to useless and almost constantly flashing in the driver display. It can think you're still in a 40 or 50 zone well after you've moved into a different speed zone. At least you can turn the sound off. It activates at 1kph over the limit, which is annoyingly silly. 5kph over as a minimum would be more realistic.
Agreed - with the compromise demonstrated in this video, I’m currently not touching the ADAS settings as I can live with it until the software update. Good suggestion with the sensors - I’ll do a test in a future vid
The problem I find is that the lane departure and lane keep assistance features fail to provide any benefit at all, even if you leave them enabled. The sudden jerking of the steering wheel during lane keep assistance, in particular, is far more dangerous left on than disabled. BYD will have to make improvements, there is no way Seal owners are going to accept the way they work currently.
The tech is fine. Our roads are stupid! We should have electronic speed limit signs that change based on whether the school zone is in operation or not. We can’t put a massive 40 sign on the side of the road and then complain when the car sees it. Just like those stupid 40s on the back of the buses… Only in NSW
Thanks for the videos, Tom. I think the response to ADAS is a personal one. I have had my atto3 for over 12 months and I don't find the alerts intrusive. In fact they remind me that I am not doing the right thing! I would much rather have a "ding" or a gentle tug on the steering wheel than flashing lights from a police car or, worse still, a MVA!
@@LudicrousFeed Yes, there are some TH-camrs who have only had experience with the Atto 3 and they are now claiming they are experts on the the Seal too. It seems pretty clear that the ADAS operation and settings are not exactly the same between the Atto 3 and the Seal.
My understanding is that in Australia, they were initially set this way by our local distributor as a precaution to ensure the car got a 5 Star ANCAP safety rating, ANCAP being our local independent safety body
So are they going to allow us to turn it off, or are they going to loosen the intrusiveness of the beeps and bongs and harsh car movements like they've done with the UK models? @@LudicrousFeed
It seems that BYD software hasn’t been well developed and the dysfunctional safety features, as well as the intrusive noises, would be somewhat more than annoying (for me) in driving this car. The BYD Seal seems excellent in so many ways, but software implementation presents as poorly designed, tokenistically implemented and useless in effect, and very distracting. Will BYD fix it? I note another comment said a software update for an Atto made it noisier!
One can always build enough evidence around a vehicle purchase one way or another. No doubt there are software issues but I’m looking forward to seeing how it will be refined. I’m glad the PWS sound for example has been toned down!
Just shows that Tesla's are built for drivers in mind first and foremost whereas all other brands are placing compliance (excessive warnings) and dealers (excessive servicing) ahead of the driver.
BS. I have one of each (Tesla and Seal). The warnings are noworse on the Seal than the Tesla. In fact I would say that our Tesla is actually worse (12 dings vs 3 if I exceed the speed limit). But Tesla fanboys will be fanboys.
@@geoffmathers3902so you've got one of each I take it? I have. I'll take the Seal over the Tesla every day of the week. The Tesla falls so far short of my seal in so many ways. But Tesla fanboys are gonna fanboy.

There’s no doubt that Tesla software has been refined through many iterations and from a lot of customer feedback. BYD will go through the same growing pains and hopefully my videos along with feedback from other owners can help improve the experience
Driving a car is not just about the software, I love my tech and the Tesla software is a positive for it, but the BYD software is fine and you know they will continually improve it.
haha yeah I'm not denying I turned the wheel to the left slightly. As I said, if I hadn't I would've driven into the dotted lines and then someone else would've complained that I can't follow road markings properly. I know I can't win right 😆
Hang on. So you get 5 star safety rating with this system. But then you're getting a future OTA to keep these systems disabled if you wish. And you still retain the 5 star rating afterwards? I hope Ioniq cars get the same update. Seems like an easy hack to get 5 stars if you address the problems after securing the rating that isn't retroactively downgraded? I know nothing about safety ratings of course.
Yeah I hear you and it seems to be the workaround because the 5 star is awarded at the time of market release with no ongoing review. A lot of cars on our roads currently likely wouldn’t pass the 2023 standards that the BYD Seal and Dolphin were subject to, to achieve 5*
Doesn’t this indicate that you know you are on your own to do all this stuff and the pop up menu .. oh dear .. byd ,the new entrant failing the customer, the antithesis of what they should do. I have said this before. There is just one kpi for them ‘ get cars out as fast as you can.. and don’t worry about the customer, they work it out. I find that people who complain it is hard to shift gear on screen, they got problem with their fingers... it was easier than shifting using traditional gear selector n you dont really need to shifts gear that much..only during parking outdoor most of the time. The car is very quiet, even my country car reviewer said it is better than Mercedes EQ series.
Teslas implementation of blindspot warning in the new M3 is truly pathetic. It's absolutely tiny, wrong warning colour, and not that bright at all compared to the seals implementation, I think Teslas implementation is only useful during night drives. I think Musk is harming Teslas growth now, he's holding the engineers back in his relentless drive for cost-cutting to customers detriment. Look at TeslaVision and the shit show it is, lack of proper rain sensor, no USS, no radar, now deletion of stalks for the mainstream M3. Ridiculous decisions. It's understandable why Andrej Karpathy left Tesla to return to OpenAI. Musk is a unreasonable buffoon. Looking at FSD V12 BETA, it's just as shit as before despite Elon making a song and dance about it. It's far more stressful supervising FSD than just driving the car yourself. Safe and reliable ADAS with only cameras is not possible.
Woah that’s a deep dive! I’ll be honest and say that as much as I love Tesla autopilot on the highway, sometimes I just want to live and drive the car myself! Am I allowed to say that?!
I’ve owned 4 Teslas so far and I feel I’ve learned and demonstrated almost all there is to know about them. We still have a Model Y which my wife uses daily as her main drive. I felt the updates in the new Model 3 were not enough to warrant us buying yet another Tesla whereas the BYD Seal makes an excellent second car plus I am curious to learn more it and watch it improve with subsequent updates.

I like how your reviews are based on driving in everyday situations looking at everyday issues that affect the majority of drivers. Well done! I'm looking forward to see you with the Seal in a busy carpark
Thanks! That's what I aim to do - keeping it to real life situations where possible. Good suggestion re: carpark to showcase cameras/sensors
The solution should be “the tech works well” not “you can turn the tech off”
Agreed
The tech does work well. Just shows people
Have bad habits like speeding or can’t keep in lane. 😂
It’s mandatory, they’re obliged to have it on every time you turn the car. You can’t turn them off permanently because sadly it’s prohibited by law.
True, but if 95% of the tech works well and 5% is annoying, you really should have the power to turn that 5% off.
@@olivertheworld8991except it doesn't: speed sign detection is not completely consistent in either BYD or Tesla, and therefore if the speed alerts are intrusive it becomes a major problem.
Love the videos mate. Would appreciate an update when the software uodate is pushed out. This is the only thing stopping buying a BYD at the moment.

Test drove the Performance version today WOW!!! I have a Dynamic on order and picking it up in a few weeks - Super stoked with your amazing channel (I watched your Live on launch night thanks!!)
This is going to be great for me as a new Seal owner - thanks :)
Awesome! Thanks for watching and all the best with delivery 👌😃
They are intended to be an aid only and if treated as such the ICC will work just fine for long drives - I’ve experienced it in the Atto 3 from Sydney to Melbourne and return 👍
I’ll demonstrate in a future uncut end to end freeway drive shortly on ICC in the Seal
@@stevenleonards4843 I can perform the same test in the Seal from Forestville to Chatswood Tesla on ICC 😁
To be fair the roads around Alexandria aren’t great so I’m not surprised with how the Seal performed!
Keep doing what you are doing..... great analysis.
Thanks!
Byd the new entrant is nothing short of negligent, bodgy quality manufacturing processes and a
Infotainment sys. that is not fit for purpose.. at all yet the shysters push the crap cars out. They also have the worst record of customer complaints or second to Mercedes. Don't touch byd... they are ripping off consumers.. spread the word.

To be fair, my complaints are just nitpicks. The Atto is still by far the best car I have driven and I would take it any day over the VW, Hyundai, and Subaru's people I know have.

I find the speed detection amazingly accurate when it sees a sign. The issue is that it doesn't realise the change when you turn off one road onto another. (Eg from a 20km/h car park onto a 60km/h main road)
If they can integrate the GPS data into the TRS, then this feature will be excellent.
That would be ideal to have at least two data sets

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming ... good thing it's a Seal!
Most car accidents are caused by speeding, running pass red lights, dozing off/ sleeping while driving. Using phones while still driving, drunk drivers.. so on, these alerts helps reduce accidents.. period.
That’s a very simple way of putting it but yes if we obeyed road rules to the letter of the law like robots then there wouldn’t be an issue
Tesla speed sign recognition also seems to be able to discern the school zone signs with the yellow extra areas alongside.
True it does 👍
I had an Atto 3 hire car for a week.
I do recall a software issue recently from some owners … which may have been rectified? Will have to check
There is a setting in the native Maps app to change day/night mode independently of the infotainment system setting.
Legacy Car makers except Kia/Hyundai implementation is subtle yet effective. The driver assist feature is supposed to assist the driver not become the driver (yet still does a half arse job)
I generally turn off LKA in most press cars I test … I really don’t like having the car correct my steering
- Lane centring (steering wheel icon) is a different matter and I find it works reasonably well - will demonstrate soon
Thanks! I’m not expecting Tesla regularity with software updates but we’ll see …!
Nailed it. Byd is a great budget product.
BYD are androids and Teslas are iPhones. You know which is the premium product
If you look at a list of Tesla updates, most of them are labelled as "bug fixes"
Great stuff Tom and happy new seal and year to you 🤝
Thanks! Same to you
Where is the interior camera managing the Driver attention warning? Is there a shutter like on laptop cameras?
Thanks for these vids!
I don’t believe there is a driver monitoring feature / camera for the Seal … but happy to be corrected
Thanks for sharing - agree with you that there needs to be a speed limit threshold eg +5 or +10 before it alerts
Yeah I now turn off emergency lane assist and switch off ISLI every drive - can’t take it
Great video! Is it possible to install the similar security cameras from the tesla to the seal?
I haven’t come across anything as integrated as the Tesla Sentry Mode setup, especially when it comes to the side repeater cameras
The 3rd issue when switching off the systems (1st issue is it's unreliable/annoying, 2nd is they come back after a restart), is that you get a warning on the dash for every one you switch off so you constantly have 2 or 3 red symbols.
The visual warnings I don’t mind as it’s a gentler reminder than an audio alert
the energy sticker on the windshield mate must go 😆
Haha yes the fridge sticker has now been removed 😁
The fact that I can’t just get in, press the brake and drive off already annoys me. Beauty is skin deep and to the beholder.
Certainly one benefit of the Tesla 👍
How often do double demerits occur?
That hasn't caught on her, UK, yet. Hope ournleaders don't cotton on to it!
Loving your new Seal.
Double Demerits occur in NSW usually every time there is a public holiday
Any idea if that incoming software update will save the driver's settings vs merely tuning how noisy the ADAS is or adjusting the TSR model? I really just want to keep the TSR alerts turned off ('intelligent speed limit information') but not the recognition itself, and absolutely have to keep ELKA off as it sent me off the road towards a tree once already while turning right over a crest with oncoming traffic but would like to keep the LKA warning on
I don’t have that much detail to offer but agree with you that I’d like to have traffic sign recognition on without the alert
Can you please do a comparison test with your existing model 3 & your new BYD Seal. Thanks
I don't have my Model 3 anymore - I sold it a few months ago
But I will be obtaining a loan of the new Highland Model 3 soon to compare
When I picked up my atto 3 in Brisbane a BYD girl who gave me the keys went through the settings with me and set it all up, so it is all less annoying. It was all very quick, but I think she set it all up as per your video + normal blinker sound. I was driving not sure what ppl were even complaining about. I wonder why not all BYD dealers knowing the issue set it all up like this for all customers.
Shout out to Alex from Alexandria Sydney BYD who did a great job explaining everything to me on delivery 👍
Haven’t got the update yet and yes it’s got auto wipers! ☔️
Hi Tom, have we heard anything more about a possible OTA release date for the Seal ? I'm expecting to take delivery late Feb and wondering in general if we feel BYD would have released something by then. Hard to find anything on the internet about it.
I haven’t received any updates yet but will of course update viewers as soon as I hear anything official
I do hope Byd release a right hand drive for their new Song L
Or the Denza N7 SUV. It looks bigger than the Atto 3.. And nicer body lines.
Sea Lion 07 looks good
I would jump at the Denza N7, a great looking vehicle, but having Mercedes DNA I think it may be out of my budget.
The School Zone thing, it would be much easier to have logic in the Nav that if its outside a certain time and not a weekday it wont go off, otherwise they have to program each states school holiday information plus the car needs to know where it is to access different information as each state has different holiday times, also school holiday times can change slightly year to year.
Yeah I'm not even sure if it's accurate in Tesla either ... I don't pay much attention to it regardless, I just rely on my own eyes 👀
"otherwise they have to program each states school holiday information plus the car needs to know where it is to access different information as each state has different holiday times" yes, that is the duty of the programmers. Thats easy. They just have to ask father google.

Let’s see what the software update brings
Yeah I haven’t found a LKA that works well yet - Tesla included hence why I usually make sure it’s the first thing I turn off
Autopilot is way better than BYD's version of it, you don't realize how good autopilot is untill you try the competition.
@LudicrousFeed Tom, I haven't been noticed any phantoms braking in the past two years. Tesla must had it fixed now.
mm I wish I could say the same about phantom braking ... Joy in the passenger seat also notices it when it occurs so I rarely use it when family are in the car otherwise I can put up with it when it's just me driving

Has anyone suggested they do saved profiles? On restart the system defaults back to all ADAS on but when you select your saved profile it turns off the systems you don’t want. This should pass ANCAP as all systems are on when car restarts
That would be fantastic
Does the Car coast? I've driven the model 3 a few times and found the regenerative braking too hard, also coming from an ICE car, i don't like the brake lights coming on everytime i take my foot off the accelerator. Are there evs that will coast along and only apply brakes when i press the brake pedal?
VW, Audi, Porsche, Fiat.
@@moestrei You can not switch off regen braking in any Tesla.
@@wolfgangpreier9160 OK, in any Tesla I sat in (quite a lot): Under Steering and Pedals set regen mode to Low or switch the gear selector to N.
Hi Tom Re suspension, Paul Maric @ Car Expert did a review on the BYD Seal in particular over sine waves in roads and came away less than impressed. It's worth checking out. Soft suspension sometimes means less control....
Thanks 👍
There’s always a balance isn’t there between soft/firm and control
"less than impressed" is a bit harsh. He later states that it's a fine compromise. Also remember that those sine waves are an extreme scenario that are exaggerated to what you'd typically encounter
@jspanga
Nah, you're just straight out wrong.
Position of Speedo and power gauge is not customisable currently … only appearance/theme
Thanks Tom. As always very informative and professional. Does the Seal 🦭 do Tesla style over the air updates to fix the ADAS alerts ‼️?
Yes BYD regularly release free OTA software updates to owners
It really is not bad, as you said if it’s going off all the time you’re probably doing something wrong.
I suspect the ADAS 5* compliance requirements will get stricter for all cars moving forward
Thanks Tom 🙂

On our Atto3 I got rid of the speed alert simply by sliding the navigation sound bar down to 0. You can turn it up again when using GPS but actually I find I can use the GPS with just the map and the blue direction line. This does not reset each time you start. I think this also stopped some other alert sound because they seem to be connected to the GPS. The speed sign on drivers display still works just no audible alerts. All this may work on the Seal. Still waiting for my car with Ocean Blue interior. Do you think the all black everything is a bit overly dark and dower?
The interior lighting and the stitching/detail gives a nice touch to the black seats
The Seal ADAS settings are not exactly the same as the Atto 3.
@@kennyobe Unless you already own a Tesla, I agree it's a hard choice between the Model 3 and Seal. But ultimately, they are very different cars with different benefits and driving characteristics. You have to turn the car off after each drive
does the sunroof have a cover underneath (living in WA so mighty sunny and hot is my fear)
The car came with a removable sunshade
Reportedly, the glass has been treated in such a way that it blocks out more heat then in the Model 3/Y apparently.

Reliability can only be commented on retrospectively. All of us BYD owners are now in that same early adopter phase and I guess time will tell …
I hear pulling the ADAS fuses works wonders 🤣
Not a solution I’m keen to try mainly because I don’t want to give my insurance company a reason to deny a claim
Also, you paid money for the feature, so it’s not good value if it’s not usable and needs to be disabled. It needs to be able to warn without being annoying.
Plus then the intelligent cruise control wouldn’t work and that would make me sad 😭
Another reviewer said that if you pull the fuses and you have an accident that the tech could have avoided then you could be up for a manslaughter charge if there is a fatality.
Is there a low speed artificial engine sound?
It’s been delivered to me set to off by default and I can’t find it in the menus … I’ll do a walkthrough in an upcoming vid and maybe you all can help me look 👀
Hey Tom the roof looks “milky” is that just the video or that’s the way it is? If ADAS is more intrusive than Tesla the car is unsafe
No it’s not milky but there is a bluish tinge to it. With ADAS on … driver/buyer beware
Add: (17/1/24) I had another look at the glass: I agree with you, it’s slightly milky: I wonder if it’s the silver coating
Will the cruise control speed up and slow down when changing speed zones?
I don't think so but I can demonstrate in a future ICC drive vlog
Hopefully bring the software update to dolphin too
Are the ADAS alerts similarly intrusive currently on the Dolphin?
@@LudicrousFeed yes. But have kept everything on but on vibration. Speed alerts are the worst.
Well said 🙏
Looking forward to seeing how the software develops as time goes on
Definitely needs to be kept in perspective, the Seal is fundamentally a great car.
I highly recommend going for a test drive in the Seal. You’ll be surprised at how nice a drive it is 😉
@@LudicrousFeed Thanks Tom. I might have to book one in on Tuesday if I can
Does the byd allow netflix, TH-cam etc like the Tesla ?
Once I get my data I can check … I was told there’s an App Store
This car seems need a lot of learning to get the hang of it. I prefer Tesla even it costs more to buy.
I can imagine the autopilot is pretty ordinary as well.
Well, it's only Day 2 for me admittedly 😉
Stay tuned I'll do an uncut end to end Intelligent Cruise Control drive shortly
@LudicrousFeed I was going to order one today but decided to get a highland Long range instead. I know it will be a fun and enjoyable toy.
Nice! Both great cars in their own right
@@timthompson3212 i gonna wait for seal new model to consider it.. wait 4 to 5 years and see if this car technology and reliability is really good.
Hmm not so far for me but I’ll monitor
Cheers
On the market in two weeks, that is redic
See you in 2 weeks lol
Good points. Apparently they’re more intrusive in the Seal than Atto 3? That’s certainly been my experience so far also
@@LudicrousFeed Yes, there are some TH-camrs who have only had experience with the Atto 3 and they are now claiming they are experts on the the Seal too. It seems pretty clear that the ADAS operation and settings are not exactly the same between the Atto 3 and the Seal.
It's weird that in Hong Kong we can turn those off permanently, may be it's about the law in Australia?
My understanding is that in Australia, they were initially set this way by our local distributor as a precaution to ensure the car got a 5 Star ANCAP safety rating, ANCAP being our local independent safety body
So are they going to allow us to turn it off, or are they going to loosen the intrusiveness of the beeps and bongs and harsh car movements like they've done with the UK models? @@LudicrousFeed
I don't have that much detail to offer ... all I know is that it will be refined
In Thailand too you can turn off permanently@@LudicrousFeed
@@LudicrousFeed not correct. EU owners have the exact same issues from what I am reading.
Stay tuned as I post when the new software update comes out hopefully soon
BS. I have one of each (Tesla and Seal).
The warnings are noworse on the Seal than the Tesla.
In fact I would say that our Tesla is actually worse (12 dings vs 3 if I exceed the speed limit).
But Tesla fanboys will be fanboys.
@@wylah19168 Tesla is the gold standard for EV's, and the seal is probably the closest to a model 3 there is around, but still falls short.
@@geoffmathers3902so you've got one of each I take it?
I have. I'll take the Seal over the Tesla every day of the week.
The Tesla falls so far short of my seal in so many ways.
But Tesla fanboys are gonna fanboy.
@@wylah19168 lol, BYD fanboy.
If you don't like one pedal driving, a decent charging network, high efficiency, a screen that not obscured by the steering wheel, go for it..
Tom, Tesla just offers a more polished product. Tesla’s software is simply years ahead. Only EV in town right now
There’s no doubt that Tesla software has been refined through many iterations and from a lot of customer feedback. BYD will go through the same growing pains and hopefully my videos along with feedback from other owners can help improve the experience
Driving a car is not just about the software, I love my tech and the Tesla software is a positive for it, but the BYD software is fine and you know they will continually improve it.
Hum... i will probably still stick with my tesla mdoel 3 after going through the comments about byd.
Enjoy! Definitely a great car also 👍
OMG 8:15 you’re one of those people that swing out as you’re turning a corner where there’s no need to swing out! 🤦
Lol darn you 4k video! undone again! 😆
I was merely following the dotted lines otherwise I would've driven into them
@@LudicrousFeedlol. 13:53 I saw a slight left turn of the wheel again as you turned right 😂
haha yeah I'm not denying I turned the wheel to the left slightly. As I said, if I hadn't I would've driven into the dotted lines and then someone else would've complained that I can't follow road markings properly. I know I can't win right 😆
the signal sound already very annoying haha..
We’ll see if BYD temper this sound
Have u tried the karaoke mode ?
Really want to hear me sing? 😁
Random is a bad word when describing ADAS.
I don’t mind if it’s regularly irregular then at least it’s predictable around the same roads I drive on everyday
Those horrible turning indicators produce more noise then a airplane
Hmm having just returned from overseas I would have to respectfully disagree 😆
The turning indicator sound is awful. Basic human aesthetics preferences seem to be completely lost on the Chinese engineers
@@stevenleonards4843 I'd have to agree re: indicators - doesn't quite "premium" enough if that's the right word to use
@LudicrousFeed every time I indicated at an intersection, or stopped at the lights, i turned it off until I actually executed the turn
Disappointing that you havent updated this with the fact that these "problems" no longer exist after update a few months ago.
Have you seen my subsequent OTA update and x months later vids?
obtrusive Driver alerts is one thing. Some may consider them to be distracting, which is not good for concentration and driver attention and safety
Waiting for the update
Honestly, you better get an ICE Mercedes if you wanted a smooth "mercedes" like drive.
Haha I don't have that kind of dosh sadly
Oh wait you said ICE ... yeah nah
Looking very sick
Me? or the car?
Jesus the blinker sound is annoying as hell.
Na, more evidence that the Brit’s and others will not select this fat podgy looking car.. and others . And BTW, the Seal is not very quick .. 5.9 0-100 not that good .

I’ll try to set a second camera to show the negative numbers for regen braking 👍
@@LudicrousFeed give us a commentary on the fly while driving when the car eases off for a car getting closer to it. Show us on the road. The MG4 brakes far too early when a car is in front of it ( not sure at the speeds of the relative cars) and what’s the latest with that

As he said 2023 ANCAP is pretty tough two cars in Australia just tested and scored a zero one was the new MG 5, the BYD Seal got a 5 star rating. I expect all cars will have these issues to a degree, we will see.
Thanks Tom for your work after watching this video I decided to stay with Tesla. Are you buying the Highland model 3 soon? Thanks and I wish you a happy 2024! 🎉

Every vehicle interior is so revolting compared to a Tesla
You come to love the minimalist interior after a while! I think the BYD interior has a reasonable buttons/screen ratio
Methinks you are joking on the Tesla.
If you take the Two ADAS Fuses out the problem is gone !!
New problem: no ICC and potential insurance claim denial
