- Before King Kong takes on Godzilla in 2021 let's take a trip back to the year 2005 for the remake of the 1933 classic King Kong. After the success of the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy Peter Jackson was given the opportunity to take a shot at one of his all time favourite propeties. It's got action, monsters, bugs, monster bugs, a really long boat sequence and Jack Black. But what does it all ad up to? Certainly something. Thanks for listening!

That ad is burned into my brain since james put out the video. I live in south america and they just opened a suvlaki place x the 1st time around me. Im definetely trying it now.
I remember seeing this at the cinema when I was 11 years old, and loads of Dad's clearly brought their toddlers to the theatre, and some kid just LOST IT when the bug scene started, screaming and crying like crazy. It sent a wave of terror through the cinema to the point where the whole audience was just reeling in disgust and terror, yelling and shouting out screen. Coolest cinema experience of my life still.
That’s pretty cool. I could see bringing a kid to this, like I would’ve loved this as a kid. I even had a 4 year old I’d babysit and he’d plonk down and sit quietly anytime it was on.
What I don’t get and will never understand is the guy who brought his 6 year old to see Joker on opening night in 2019.
I was like 25 when I saw this movie, and although at the time I was just out of the hospital and drugged out the wazoo, I still can't watch the bug scene. Even the name of my chronic illness is "Scared the $h!7 out of me" Disease. And no I'm honestly not joking (Crohn's, but same thing)
No kid should have been allowed to see that scene. That’s bad parenting.

Yeah I played that game around the same time the movie came out. Both were great. Then I remember hearing the stereotype that games based on movies suck and was confused but didnt realize I played an exception.

This is the only official King Kong film not to have a sequel
YET. Obviously Peter Jackson hates sequels because he would never stoop so low as to turn something into a sequel just for the big bucks involved in the box office receipts.

The bit with the bug pit is one of the few bits in a film to genuinely traumatise me. The bit where the worm comes down over Andy Serkis's head is the worst.
Honestly, I think the idea of being eaten by giant bugs is terrifying.
Seriously. I've seen loads of straight up horror films that don't even come close to being as distressing as that scene.
That bit always put me off because Serkis' character's machete-wielding arm is completely free and he has more than enough room to manoeuvre it so he can chop at the worms and free himself (and they're also quite slow), yet for some reason he just kind of limply flails it without hitting anything. It makes more sense now knowing there wasn't any choreography and they were told to randomly fight the air, but it's one of the few parts that didn't work for me, even at the time.
This movie sometimes seems like a horror movie
As a biologist who majored in ecology, I love the bug pit scene! (My husband, an engineer, finds it horrible and always leaves the room when we watch the movie at home. 😁) In the movie theatre, I played "name the species of invetebrate" during that scene. Apart from the size, those arthropods and invertebrates are spot-on... I dissected the tiny real world counterparts of some of those worms during my time a university student. 😉

Is this movie WAY too long? Absolutely.
Do I still love it for the amount of infectious TLC that Jackson poured into it? ABSOLUTELY.
Not gonna lie when i first watched Peter Jackson's King Kong in cinemas when I'm like 11 at that time i didn't actually care on how long the movie is i watched the movie just to see a Big Gorilla smashing things, Beats some Terrifying Creatures, and kidnaps a very beautiful girl who ended up having a wholesome relationship with a Big Gorilla
Then years later i bought a physical copy of the movie, i rewatched it again and i just realized that they intentionally make the movie long just to establish the backstories of the characters and they established most of characters' backstory very well and that's the reason why i loved the movie even more

I *hated* those wierd rock velociraptor things, and even to this day I sometimes have nightmares about those fuckin' things.

This is one of my favourite movies idc. The CGI is fantastic, the acting was solid especially from Naomi Watts, the soundtrack is phenomenal and I still listen to it to this day, and I will never not cry when Kong dies

If you’d believe it, there’s actually an EVEN LONGER extended version of this. It’s 13 more minutes and it adds in 2 more action scenes. I think it’s got hijinks with a stegosaurus and some creepy water creatures? It’s been a while since I’ve seen it. It’s all right.

It’s a PERFECT background movie. It’s also really good at distracting kids you’re tired of babysitting. I learned that as a teenager.

This remains my favorite version of Kong to date. People give it crap for being long, but it needs to be in order to establish character. By the end of the film, you're so attached to the story that it pulls you in and breaks your heart. I can't think of any movie in the past 16 years which has done that as efficiently as this film has.
My favorite parts are actually in the first third, before they even get to the island. It has great establishing groundwork to the characters and fills you with unease right alongside of the crew.
I just rewatched this again last week and I still can't get enough.
i find this movie to be so damn good. Like a true new era monster mash that was just amazing for its time. Most expensive film to make at the time and it showed it.
The movie is very long though. Kong is ofc the highlight of the movie and Kong delivers every minute he’s on screen

You probably just assumed it was Ron Livingston. The two were pretty interchangeable at the time this came out.
When he does the comb bit all I can see is Archer.
I gotta say, even though this film is super indulgent, Peter Jackson's passion for the project is visible throughout and that makes it all the better. It feels properly epic, and even though I'm sure you could edit it down to a brisk 120 min, I am glad we got the Peter-Jackson-forgot-how-to-make-a-regular-movie-after-LOTR version of this story.
King Kong playing with the T-Rex's broken jaw after he kills it is a direct callback to the original King Kong movie, in which he does the same thing.
This movie is so underrated, man. So epic and emotional, it's unbelievable how many things work in this one. I got the too-long criticism, but damn... this is KING KONG. Deal with it!

@Beau Lijah that’s the issue with a lot of directors these days. the extended version of ROTK requires 2 strong coffees and a good amount of patience lol. Once you sweep the Oscars there’s basically no where left to go but either down or in a completely different direction (kinda what happened with James Cameron inbetween titanic and avatar)
My favorite memory of this movie was the “PFFFFT” let out by the guy behind me in the theater after Jack Black said “it was beauty killed the beast.”
Omg! I had almost the SAME experience. There was a couple on a date in the row under us and the woman said sarcastically “Oh, Jesus...” at that line.
My favorite memory was a mum and her two kids sprinting out of the theater when Andy Serkis was eaten alive by slugs with horns.

The only thing I really remember from this movie was my high school band teacher telling us that James newton Howard only had a month to compose all of the music, which is an insanely short amount of time to think of themes, score it, record it, all before your hard deadline known as the premiere
It's a fantastic soundtrack as well which makes it even more impressive!
finally soemone talks about the soundtrack! It's so amazing and surprisingly richly orchestrated. Like, one month? I wouldn't have blamed him if he had just thrown together some Zimmer-ish drumloops and called it a day, yet he crafted like 5 themes and then in the action tracks the whole orchestra just goes nuts!
Allegedly he was very pissed when he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar considering how much he fucking tortured himself for this film

Yeah, I kinda dig him as the scrappy, world weary, Popeye-esque cook. He’s not just an incredible mo-cap actor but a genuinely compelling on-screen presence.
The worst thing the MCU has done so far is killing him off in Black Panther

@@Movypro23 Yeah! The tech improved but he was also really able to bring more intellect and potency to a real character! But glancing back at this it's incredible how much power and mass he was able to give to this Kong, as a gorilla at that. Personality, strength, agility alongside bulk, it's a heck of a performance. In stage and drama he's a powerhouse, he's kind of been the singular groundbreaker regarding how old "stage puppet" acting is now merged into film.
That and he's now mocap'd two famous MonkE.
And his role in the Inception prequel (I'm joking) "The Prestige" as Tesla's assistant in Colorado Springs was a lot of fun for me.

Saw this with my dad, and I was completely blown away by the visuals! It's Epic, 188 minutes! It took them 15 years to make this movie happen. The Extended Edition is 13 minutes longer.
i will never understand why the trio Trex was so adamant about eating a small woman, especially when they had a fat juicy crocodile

I'm just assuming that a small morsel that can't fight back is easier to eat than, you know, an 8 meter long crocodile

They invented an entire fictional "natural history" for their take on Skull Island, and the short version is that evolution on the island has spent millions of years in a hyper-aggressive, hyper-competitive cycle. All of the predators are just suuuuuper vicious, basically, and the v-rexes in particular have a generational feud with Kong and his ancestors (each species is, essentially, the only natural predator of the other).

I grew up with this movie. This is where my brain goes when someone mentions King Kong. I love this movie so much. I have a nostalgic conection with it and I love it. The bug scene haunted my 7 year old self for days. I still watched it over and over.

I love that T-Rex fight (V-Rex!) and the end of it where he kills the one and plays with its jaw, and how that's pretty much just taken from the original King Kong movie.
My problem with that scene is that they turn V. Rexes into mindless monsters that don't have any sense of self preservation and wast all they energy for wanting to eat some woman.

This film is a fucking masterpiece. It’s my favorite film after Jurassic Park and I will defend it with my life. I love that it’s 3 hours long. Hell, I’d watch an 8 hour version of it.

I wasn't around yet in 1993, so watching this film in 2005 on the big screen when I was 11, it was like experiencing my Jurassic Park. And oddly enough I wasn't bored by the running time, I ate it all up and rewatched it several times on DVD.
It still genuinely impresses me how well a lot of the CGI and effects in this movie hold up for 2005.
There are still some...iffy moments here and there, the stampede scene is...probably the most infamous example, but a lot of it still looks great.
James said he loves Jack Black and he’s lying unless you do Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny

We need more of these level of monsterverse. Godzilla vs Gigan or Destroyah. While watching the movie, I thought it was too long for my kid. My kid pulled me when the movie moved to Brazil. He says "This is going to be epic". That just made me happy 😀 as a family we enjoyed it. The people who worked on the movie should be very proud that they made an amazing movie for the fans.

I felt so guilty even though many kids in the room were crying as well LOL
I think I watched this movie like 7 times over the course of a 3 month period in 2013 and I liked it.
Jackson squeezed as much life out this classic as narratively possible.
They should release this review on Jaz, an under appreciated storage medium for it’s time.

The fact that it takes its time to build up the suspension in the beginning ist why i like this movie so much. today most films feel to rushed to "get to the fun parts". this movie however feels like good old classic adventure. and thats good.

Honestly, apart from the super long runtime & a few noticeable effects/CGI criticism, this is one of their more positive reviews
This movie also has a surprisingly good tie-in video game on the Playstation 2 and X Box.
I remember playing the video game of this movie all summer when it came out. Even there, the sheet effort really showed with it easily being the best movie-adapted video game I've ever played.

I saw this in theaters when I was 17 and I can’t remember being so enraptured by the action and wondering how much longer the movie could go on before in my life
Loved this movie, still my favourite Kong (and he looks better than the newer films). Don't care if its long, when I like something I like lots of it!

that bug sceen preticularly the bit where the guy is eaten by worms genuinely gave me PTSD when i saw that as a 7 year old i still genuinely see it too this day and still have issues with worms
Saying it here again, I saw it when I was 25 and on hospital drugs, and I still can't watch it. I can't even really THINK about it. I did have one single special effects neuron in my brain yelling "Andy's head didn't deform at all while the worm sucked down onto his face," and then every other neuron starts screaming "SHUT THE H3LL UP!!!!" Be safe my BigFish Taco-y friend! Avoid dem worms!

I watched this movie with my dad in 2005, and to this day it's one of my best childhood memories. I may be speaking from a place of bias but I absolutely love this movie.
I loved this movie and saw it in theaters twice and bought it on dvd when it came out and watched it in my room on a portable dvd player several time haha. Just love the performance by Andy as Kong and you really feel for him at the end and absolutely love the clouding effect they glaze over his eyes you can see the moment life leaves him it's beautiful yet horrible all at once.
Ironically the 2005 version was more thrilling and the scenes were more horrifying than the big CGI monke we get in later years
Although the Skull-Crawler was pretty impressive in the new Kong movie.
