I love that Siskel and Ebert were such bosses that they essentially told the director "You couldn't even make fun of us correctly, that's how bad you are!"
They did make fun of them correctly. Those 2 characters were amazing!
I love that they even said something to the effect of, "they put us in this movie and they didn't even kill us!" Like how can you not feel that. If youre gonna trash your critics in a monster movie but you don't have them get killed/hurt in any way what are you even doing?

I always thought it was just something a guy, who is very socially awkward, would say.
It represents Nick's social anxiety and the tragedy of his inability to truly make friends that are outside of the few he has, when face to face with this guy near him, he thinks to himself about how much he wants to finally make a new friend that dosen't act off with him or seems to not respect him, he attempts to start a conversation but it does absolutely nothing, and he says nothing else cause he accepts his fate at being an awkward individual who's a slave to his own love for science

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Godzilla (1998). The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of nuclear physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Nick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Godzilla (1998) truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Godzilla's existencial catchphrase "rawr" which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Roland Emmerich's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Godzilla (1998) tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
As someone who has a sort of "foreign" name, but is only 2 syllables and is pronounced exactly as it is spelled, I can tell you the running gag is the most realistic part of the movie.
The military did more damage to Manhattan than Zilla itself.

Zilla is a great Kaiju but didn’t capture that essence. His son did a better job at living up to the name Godzilla in Godzilla The Series.
I am convinced that “that’s a lot of fish” is supposed to be a shot at Jeff Goldblum’s “that is a big pile of shit” line from Jurassic Park. But they don’t understand comedy so it’s not a funny crack and without context it’s even dumber somehow

I enjoyed this movie when I was a kid even though I expected way more from it. And the series was amazing. It was awesome to see Godzilla fight some monster in the pacific every week.
@@kasjachrum There's a difference between the artstyle and the animation itself, the original comment might be referring to animation having choppy, cheap movement at times, not that the character design were bad.

Haven't seen it recently, but I straight up loved this movie as a kid. I also have little to no familiarity with actual Godzilla mythos.
I used to defend this movie, till I realized I saw it when I was 8 years old..
This is a bad movie, but because it was my introduction to Godzilla, it has a small place in my heart

See, there's three ways to judge this movie.
As a monster movie: fine, enjoyable, but nothing that special.
As a movie: not great. Has a lot of the same tropes as other Emmerich movies, and worse than usual (imo).
As a Godzilla movie: genuinely terrible. Might be one of the worst misrepresentations of a character.
That said, the monster has appeared in some official Godzilla comics in an attempt to redeem him, which Im for. Would be cool to see him make a comeback somehow.
I've always had a soft spot for this film. I watched it when I was a kid and it was the first Godzilla film I saw, and even now understanding its (many) flaws I still enjoy it. 🤷

Honestly this was just a mistake to try re-imagining Godzilla. Shin Gojira and Godzilla 2014 + KOTM were definitely better steps in the direction for an innovation for the character.
2014 is an insanely good realistic reimagining, and its sequel pays tribute in all the right ways while adding new things. Kinda reminds me of the new Doom games

I was 8 years old when I went to see this in the theatre. There was a giant thunderstorm that day and I remember walking into the theatre, soaked and scared because I was fully convinced Godzilla was real. I made my parents leave after maybe 10 mins because I was too scared. They probably are thankful now.

Some of the shots were actually decent for the day. Their colour grading was pretty good for some of it and they had a kinda fogging effect that really sold the scale at times
the nuke intro, the fishing boat attack and survivor, the giant foot prints, the giant boat with a gash in it, the old guy running for his life on the dock, the first time godzilla goes in the city and the guy grabs his camera and tries to get a shot of it. IDC WHAT ALL THE HATERS SAY this movie was my fking childhood.

3. The toys for the movie were pretty cool. I had one of the Apache helo's and it was awesome.
I had the Godzilla puppet toy thing. You put it on like a puppet, and every time you closed it's mouth, it'd roar like from the movie.
I always had to question why it only played the sound when the mouth was closed.
Also that cartoon wasn't half bad.

This is my favorite Godzilla movie because my inner child loved dinosaurs back then with a passion. Nowadays I understand what Godzilla is truly about and I can see them as separate things.

I love Tohos' retconning of what this creature is. It's a genetically engineered monster sent by some aliens to kill Godzilla but ended up in New York instead of Tokyo and the Americans mistook it for Godzilla.
The monster is so ineffective that it didn't even rustle Godzillas jimmies, he's just chilling under the ocean somewhere.
The best thing they could've done to salvage this.
Zilla 1998 is a mutated iguana.
So the original idea was to have him battle a Griffin type creature and impale it's head on the empire state building why didn't we get that to begin with

Funny enough, this is the movie that made me a Godzilla fan. I remember watching this and loving it as a kid, watching the cartoon show and then Godzilla 2000 was in theaters and I loved it, too. After that, I would try to watch all Godzilla films I could find. It ain’t a good movie, but I still have a soft spot for Godzilla 98. It’s a fun kaiju film despite it not being an conventional, accurate or well adapted Godzilla movie.
I remember the tag line for the toys was someone shouting "we need bigger guns" and being dissatisfied by nobody saying it in the movie
This movie is fantastic, because it sets the stage for Zilla to get absolutely curbstomped in two seconds by the real Goji, set to a Sum 41 song.

Interesting note about Godzilla breathing fire in this movie, there was clearly some debate over weather he actually would be able to do it, which led to this awkward sort of "have it both ways" scene where he sort of roars at some combustible debris, triggering an explosion which could be interpreted as a fireball. Even if Godzilla were breathing fire, it would still have been quite inaccurate, as he is often depicted spewing an atomic blast that didn't even look like fire. The animated series fixes this, showing Godzilla breathing large blue plumes of flame to signify it was atomic in nature, better matching how it looked in the then- current Heisei Era. This is why the internal project title for the animated series was called Blue Harvest. Eagle-eyed readers may also have realized that this was the original production title for Star Wars in 1977.
I love that jurassic Park treated cgi tentatively given it's limitations at the time, and these guys were like "nah, it'll be fine" :)

No joke I remember watching the Godzilla animated show and loved it as a kid. I even wrote a letter to the fox kids network begging them not to cancel it and only to find out years later my grandmother never mailed it.
I had tears in my eyes when i first saw that scene from Godzilla final wars and its still feels very emotional to this day. It was exactly the scene i wished to see when i stepped out the cinema after watching Godzilla 98.
the way I can tell that we've failed as a species is because this movie exists.

Devlin seems to write a great first act, then forgets the movie needs two more acts.
If there's one thing Emmerich and Devlin excel at, in this, Stargate, and ID4, it's the first act build up.
And then the thing is revealed, and the movie gets worse. Every time.
I thought Zilla looked really dorky when running towards the audience.
The ideal Godzilla movie should have terror like Cloverfield, fights like Pacific Rim and characters like Jurassic Park (as long as done soulfully and to a standard).

Truth be told, I love this movie. We had it on tape and my mum would play it on a rainy day when there was some ironing to be done. That's a comforting memory, and this movie never needed to be anything else than just a schlocky way to pass the time.

To be fair with movies you get past a certain point in poor quality where it begins reaching into ‘so bad it’s good’ territory and begins to have some redeeming factors.
A movie like this isn’t good, but due to its cheesy nature, the era & genre it’s from, the bad special effects, the cast, etc there are various aspects that can make it understandable for why someone would like it.
Similar thing when I see movies like Batman & Robin or Howard The Duck listed as the worst of all time. They are *really bad* but they still tell a coherent story so I don’t think they’re unwatchable and I can understand a kid liking them. It’s the movies that stay neither really bad or really good which are the worst. That stinking state of mediocrity.
We recorded on vhs when it aired on tv.
and let's not forget good ole Puff Daddy did a song for this wonderful movie as part of the marketing push, and what a glorious song it was.............................
I like the practical effects in the Godzilla. We still have the top notch miniatures and real explosions. In some shot composing is good, like in the tropical island with tanker on the beach. Overall I treat that movie as a guilty pleasure, but some bits of it are not that bad IMHO

If they had just called the movie something else than Godzilla I think it might have been received better. And I love that they threw it into Final Wars making it just one of the many various monsters in the Godzilla universe.

I remember the animated series. It's filed in my head alongside other movie adaptions, like the Evolution one or the Men in Black one. I seem to remember it being alright!

Honestly, I love this as much as I hate it mostly because of childhood nostalgia.
Plus I wouldn't even be a Godzilla Fan without it, so that's the most respect I'll give it.
During one of the helicopter chase scenes, where they lose Godzilla and can't find him (OR HER) before Godzilla sneaks up and takes them out, my dad commented "Why don't they just fly up so they can see him?"

I liked Godzilla 2014 but I have to admit the moment when they cut away from the first fight I was enraged. Not only because I wanted to see a cool monster movie but because you're like what happened? Did they fought to a standstill and then one of them ran away? Did they just argue politics all night? Was MUTO just too much for Godzilla? Tha faaaaaack.

I lived next to Madison Square Park (NOT the Garden, for the uninitiated) in NYC when they filmed this movie. That whole army & "a lot of fish" battle was filmed there overnight every night for ... a week (maybe?). That meant we had to put up w giant spot lights on all the buildings all night long, explosions going off, street closures,, hundreds of people, loudspeakers, the works. Although some of the army vehicles were real, most were fake & stationary. And that giant pile of (foam) fish was propped up with plywood--there was no "back side" to it; if you walked a few feet to the left or right of the camera you could see if was essentially just half a pile. OH! & there was a super popular sushi place in Chelsea called Godzilla Sushi. Just a little independent restaurant. Sony went after them before the movie came out & forced them to change their name. They ended up going with Monster Sushi.
This movie came out the day I was born...I vividly remember this movie because I always watched it as a kid but never knew it came out on my birthday
