    I'm impatient so I did not spend the time to watch this video but I have been using this method for years (maybe it is the same one here!!) Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Wash and dry basil. Place on cookie sheet. Close oven door and turn the oven off. Forget about it for however long - half hour? An hour? Pull it out and put it in a jar. Works for me!!

    I sun dry my herbs, including my basil. If the day is hot enough, and it's not here. They dry by evening. I turn it often while they aer drying.

      I have used the air dry method and it didn't work well for me. Not with basil. Other herbs I air dry. But never sun dried i will have to try that!

    Thank you so much! I’m growing Basil for the 1st time & I need to harvest a lot. I’m going to use this oven method to dry it & store in a Mason jar! 👍

    Nicely done lady😊 and i also say hang drying basil is a big mistake. 95 degrees f in dehydrator works best for me.

      @DaveE99 all depends on your dehydrator.. I have a 4 tray version. I usually let them go 6-8 hrs.. on the low setting is best as u lose less terpenes and volatile goodies... u can open that basil shaker many months later and Pow! Still fragrant unlike any store bought.. happy preserving.

    After washing but for drying,with me been putting it in an salad spinner bowl, spin it out 2 or 3 or 4 times then dry with paper towels or regular towels and then let it air dry.

    Ummm...no one thought to suggest that if you cut off the flowering portion at the a leaf node below the flowers the plant will continue to produce leaves? Anyone? Basil basics?

    Make sure the sink has been scrubbed very clean. Sinks get very dirty.

    Do you ever dehydrate your basil? Also, when you process and crush… do you keep them stems of the leaves?

    Does it lose any nutritional value by heating it in the oven and drying it? What is the shelf life after it's dried and put in the jar?

    I would agree with most comments here that hanging upside down and drying it is probably most effective and flavor saving way to do it. I do believe that cooking it in the oven will take away from its flavor.

    How do you capture basil seeds?

    • @yogigardens
      @yogigardens  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They form in the flowers that grow from the plant. Just wait until the flowers are spent. Sometimes it will reseed itself if you dont mind it coming up in the same area

  • @cathygreen3771
    @cathygreen3771 ปีที่แล้ว

    How is the flavor after drying. When I did it the basil had no flavor. Or maybe I was expecting to taste more like fresh as dill and oregano do even after drying

    • @yogigardens
      @yogigardens  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it still has plenty of flavor. But I use lots of it at a time as i do with most herbs

      I learned how to dry the basil from this video last year, just came back for a refresher with my first basil harvest of this year. I had really good luck with it retaining flavor and smell.

    • @donnaz1961

      Basil usually takes a lot longer than that to dry. It really should not be dried in temperature more than 90°, or the lowest temp you can put it on. 90° as ideal and it will take several hours sometimes days! If you dry it too fast you'll lose the flavor and the nutrients in the leaves of the basil.

    • @yogigardens
      @yogigardens  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A good rule of thumb is about 6 months. But can last a longer than that. But I go through it each year and dry more the next season

    • @yogigardens
      @yogigardens  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My oven is super old and a piece of crap. Newer ovens have a lower setting then mine and will work a lot better. Dehydrator would be the best but i don't have one and not everyone can get one. But most people have an oven.

    😢 kitchen sinks have over 17,000 bacteria per square inch while a further 13,000 can be found around the handles of the tap. T

      @yogigardens  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's why you clean the sink. Pretty simple 😁

      😳 you can't, that's why it's so dangerous!!! After you thoroughly clean a sink with bleach even twice, you'll still extract enough bacteria from the drain crevices to kill someone because the food and moisture are instant breeding grounds. It's just an extremely dangerous and stupid risk! 👍
