I dry all of my herbs by placing them in a brown paper bag, and folding the top over a few times. They retain their nice green color, and crisp up nicely that way too.
Pam, I have only recently found your channel and love the no nonsense approach to all you do. BUT, thanks to you and your videos on greens and even basil, it has forced me to completely restock my sprout seeds and microgreens seeds, My partner just purchased another metal shelf unit which has been set in one of our south facing windows (for winter). We are both excited about getting the green-things going again. I have completely forgotten about sprouting since this darned virus hit us. We look forward to watching your many other videos. There isn't a word spoken during your ramblings while working that isn't really important info. Thanks so much for you and hubby's time in presenting these videos. Many Blessings to you and yours.
Adore your channel. You speak so clearly. eloquently and explain processes thoroughly. Thanks 🙏 A Suggestion for drying Basil or indeed any herb is, using paper bags upside-down to prevent dust & debris from landing on the leaves . I’ve used this method for years after a Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Herb Garden Expert suggested I try this method. Just take a lunch sized paper bag & a rubber band. Poke a wee hole in the bottom where the herb stems can protrude without the leaved exposed to dust in the air. Secure the stems with a rubber band. They are protected from dust, they are aerated & can dry via the fully opened bottom of the paper bag. Thanks again for your work in this channel.
Thank you for the tip. I have used that method as well. It is good to have different ways of doing things in case one way doesn't work as well for someone who lives in a different climate.
Thank you so very much. I too live in southern texas. Not much rain but last year got to 110. So much heat in 2 years. So the race is own to grow as many herbs as i can before my garden gets burnt and toasted. Thank you again
Hi Aunt Pam! I loved this video, thank you so much! You inspired me to propagate some basil clippings in my windowsill and now they have roots! I’m ecstatic. Thank you for all the good information, I look forward to your next video ❤️
Very timely tutorial! My Aerogarden basil seed took off, surprising me with a bumper crop of basil. I had no idea how to preserve it properly. I tried the heat method, but was not happy with the results. Thank You for the easier, better way!
Perfect timing, I have LOTS of basil. My basil only grows best inside the house in my garden window. We LOVE your videos and the time you spend sharing your knowledge with the world 💕
Where in CO are you? I'm in rural Berthoud, north of Boulder. I harvested our basil yesterday. My husband is out there right now trying to shake the wet snow off our orchard trees! I finally figured out how to grow basil here. We built a simple cattle panel tunnel and skinned it with a green house plastic (while opaque). Our chickens live in it in winter, but in summer, we move big cloth planters into the tunnel and this is where I've grown the most amazing genovese basil ever. Somehow being out of the wind and direct sun, they don't bolt as quickly. The stems get so thick they actually have what looks like tree bark. Even when they flower, the leaves remain thick and dark green. I made a lot of pesto today and was wondering what to do with what's left, so watching you dehydrate and propagate is perfect timing for me. Thanks!
We are in southern Utah near Zion National Park which is part of the Colorado Plateau. That is a great idea for growing basil! I am going to try it. Thank you.
Thank you for the information. I dry my basil very much as you do. I live in NE Ohio and am experimenting with my sage & tarragon plants being outside in my raised bed planters as with 5 cats, I cannot leave them out in our home. When I looked yesterday, they were still green & lovely even though we have had several frosts and it is Nov. 18! I have dried both in my oven with no heat, just a protective place to dry for a couple of days. Can't wait to use them for Thanksgiving turkey & goose! Happy Holidays! Thanks so much for your videos, you give so much information for which I am grateful. Sadly, I put away my canner to focus on cooking & baking for the holidays. I think I will have withdrawals! With you as my teacher, I really enjoy canning.
Thanks for you comments. I am trying to propagate tarragon right now but so far no roots! We have plenty of sage outside and it seems to be very cold tolerant. Oh my--did it every bring back memories from my childhood when you mentioned goose for Thanksgiving!
Awesome video. I'm new to dehydrating and I felt like it was too harsh on my basil. Also, I don't know why I have not thought to propagate. I will try it!
I need a good tomato bisque recipe for canning. I have wondered about canning with milk in it. This is my second canning season. I trust your knowledge. 😊
Oh gosh! LOL Was just looking at my basil today wondering what I'll do with it. I have an old large Nesco dehydrator and think I can just put a paper towel over the center hole and still have it breathe. Will try tomorrow. And hell yeah it's going in a Weck! Thank you!
will the basil plant regrow new stems after you cut it? I keep seeing these bushy looking basil plants but mine is in my kitchen window and it has like 3 straight stalks
I love basil especially basil pesto.. unfortunately I am having trouble with finding directions on canning pesto. Do you have any advice or perhaps you can be the first in canning basil pesto ? 😊
Good afternoon, Would you dehydrate mint using the same process? I love your channel! You remind me so much of my grandmother. I mean that with the utmost respect. She lived to almost 105 years old. Thank you so much, Angie
I have sweet mint that dries delightfully on top of my microwave. I dehydrated some and it was very crispy and curled. The open-air batches dry “enough” and don’t lose as much of the shape or color. However my Italian basil did not dry the same way in the open air!
Great video-what's your opinion on growing basil hydroponically? It does amazingly well in that setup. I did it once when I lived in the city (kind of by accident LOL) and it absolutely flourished.
I dry all of my herbs by placing them in a brown paper bag, and folding the top over a few times. They retain their nice green color, and crisp up nicely that way too.
Yes--that is a great way as well. I didn't have any brown paper bags this time around, but I have also done that. Thanks for your comments!
I am so glad you mention this, super helpful to me
This is exactly what I did today! 89 yesterday, snow today! My whole garden is in my kitchen getting preserved!
Wow. Crazy weather.

Ooh, how we LOVE seeing roots!!! 😊
Yes!!

Your basil in pots is so lush and healthy! Would love to know how you do this! Thanks for sharing.

Great! Thanks for your comments.
Thank you for this video. I'm gonna try this preserving method with cilantro as well.

The roots grew so fast. Nice video. Thanks
They really did--it surprised me! Yesterday I planted them in little pots and they seem to be doing fine.
Good info. Like the idea putting the basil in dehydrator with it off.
Thank you!
Your basil is so beautiful and green! what is your favorite fertilizer for indoor herb plants?
Thank you for this video. Once again I wish I could click a ❤ instead of just a 👍🏼.
Love your show. Thanks for sharing.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching.
I just found your channel and I love it! So much information!! Thank you!

I need a good tomato bisque recipe for canning. I have wondered about canning with milk in it. This is my second canning season. I trust your knowledge. 😊
I will look into that, but I do know that the USDA does not recommend canning milk in any recipe. You could always add it afterward.
@@RoseRedHomestead thank you so much. I made your tomato paste recipe, it was such a time saving method. You are wonderful.
@@Heithre I am looking up tomato bisque recipes right now! Thanks for that requesty.
It's not recommended that you add any dairy to your canning, no rice or pasta. You can add later.
Could you do a video making packages of pesto like Knorr does?
We will place that on our list. Jim

That made me laugh! You go, girl!
lovely video. I love basil too but am not too successful growing it in Ireland.
Sorry to hear that. You might try growing some inside...like in your kitchen. Thanks for watching.
@@RoseRedHomestead Yes I'm thinking I'll give it another try as it is soo lovely. thanks for your videos
Thank you! Love your videos
Glad you like them!
Great
Thank you.
Interesting how large they grew in such small containers.
Yes it is...they were very determined! Thanks for watching.
Thanks! Great video
Glad you liked it!

Yes, where u cut the stem, it it “fork” and grow in 2 stems.
I cant wait to try :)
Excellent! Thanks for watching.
I love basil especially basil pesto.. unfortunately I am having trouble with finding directions on canning pesto. Do you have any advice or perhaps you can be the first in canning basil pesto ? 😊
There are no USDA home canning recommendations for canning pesto, but you can freeze it, if that helps.
Is there a way to preserve cucumbers? I would love to enjoy them outside of the growing season. Thanks
The only way I know is to use them to make pickles. You could freeze slices to use them to infuse water.

I would say grow it any way you can that works for you! That is a great idea, accident or not!
