Bruce Dickinson has always been outstanding in pushing his energy out to the audience. He's absolutely fantastic and the entire band follows. A 2-hour show with Maiden feels like a marathon. For the audience. Best live act ever

True story. To this day, seeing their "Somewhere in Time" tour in person is the best stage show I've ever seen. Only the Cirque Du Soleis "O" show has topped it.

When we studied Coleridge at school, I persuaded my English teacher to play my Poweslave record in class (this track at least). Myself and my best mate were in heaven. The rest of the class, not so much 😂😁

I walked into my English class, don't remember what year in high school, but the teacher had a boom box on her desk and passed out the lyrics to this song. In middle school I wore Maiden shirts to school so people were getting my attention and doing thumbs up and stuff. After the song was over even the goody goody kids were saying stuff like, "wow, that's the kind of stuff you've been listening to?"

I did the same with 'Still Life' from Piece of Mind. My 9th grade English teacher was a teen in the 60s musical and cultural explosion so he was all fir playing the music after we dissected the lyrics. He said that the music of the 60s was basically poetry in the form of songs. The metalheads and rock people loved it. The rest of the class hated it as we headbanged and played air guitar 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤

@John Wheeler Senjutsu certainly isn't among my favorite Maiden but calling it the "worst album ever done" by them is an exaggeration. It's still better than the Blaze albums, and I'd also rank it ahead of No Prayer, Fear of the Dark (which is a pretty dismal album absent the title track), and Dance of Death. Like most late Maiden it takes a lot of listens to grow on you.

Stunning stuff, storytelling music as it should be, performed by these legendary musicians. You are right Beth, music like this is hard to find nowadays. I remember being in high school back around when Powerslave came out. I listened to this record 24/7 as the typical teen and Maiden fan I was . Rime Of The Ancient Mariner was a true favourite from this record.
And of course when my litterature teacher mentioned Samuel Taylor Coleridge, I was proud to tell everyone in the class that his famous epos was The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner. Thanks for that, Iron Maiden. But also thank you for a great LP/recording that is timeless, and IMHO from your peak years.
I got the Live After Death double live album as Christmas present the year after from my brother, which of course also got played to death. I think they'd cut out Bruce's little rant about drugs there though lol.

"Empire Of The Clouds" a masterpiece. Nothing better explains what Bruce can still do today. Or how much he's grown. Unfortunately there is no live version here, but a really good one with lyrics. It's not a simple song anymore, it's a composition. It also shows well what Maiden is capable of. A true tragic story that dates back 100 years and is just beautifully told. Greetings from Germany and up the Irons. 🤘

Maiden is still out there doing this now. A song off their Book of Souls album "empire of the clouds" is about the R-101 disaster. Glory Hammer's entire discography is their fictional scifi story. A great older example is Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime album. It's one long story. Great album, you should definitely check it out.

@@atonesb5251 Honestly it's easy to fob Chris Bowes off as a joke artist, but the dude is genuinely a genius who just does whatever the hell he wants. There's few artists so talented yet flippant and headstrong, just doing whatever the hell they want, not settling in one genre. Mike Patton is another example, though obviously a better singer than Chris. Chris is an alright singer, but it's his songwriting and composing skills as well as his fluidity where he shines.

I saw and heard Iron Maiden perform "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" in 1986 my seat was on the side balcony of a 2,100 seat capacity concert hall, I was about 10 yards from the lighting rig and when the pyrotechnics went off I nearly crapped my pants! I think that you can overthink singinging. I have sung standing, I have sung sitting, I have sung lying on my stomach with my head in a flower box while wasps flew around me, I have sung lying on my back with the foot of a 17 stones rugby union prop forward on my chest. I have sung while dancing around a stage with an attractive 5' 9" blonde woman. People wonder how I can sing from B2 through to E flat5, I don't know, I just do it! I was taught all of the foundational basics of singing by a member of the Scottish Opera chorus a long time ago and that has kept my voice in shape for around 3 decades. Although it has to be noted that my vocal range when I was nineteen was F2 to F5, but I'm 53 now and I'm amazed my voice is still intact after a 2 week battle with coronavirus in in hospital ib 2021!

Oh Beth, there are still bands creating stories in music, but they won't fit in the "spotify, amazon, itunes ect. algorythm" and thats why we miss them.
but since i discovered iron maiden in the early 90's i love them. and i have to thank you to bring them back once a while on your channel.

"Please suggest to me people who are making music like this now"
    Iron Maiden.
There is no other band who do what they do, as well as they do.
Try listening to Empire of the Clouds off one of their more recent albums, The Book of Souls. It's about 18 minutes long and tells the story of a doomed airship on its maiden voyage. It's a masterpiece of storytelling and is guaranteed to send shivers down your spine. It's a beautiful, yet tragic and haunting song.
Sadly they've never played it live and have said they probably never will, but it's a fantastic piece of music. It was written by Bruce Dickinson, and was recorded not long after he was treated for throat cancer. It's a remarkable work of art.
Despite its length, the first I heard it I must have listened to it on repeat for about 2 hours straight. I couldn't get enough of it! Amazing song.

LOVED this video! One of my favorites, and I loved hearing your breakdown. As for storytelling songs, I'm not sure of any recent ones that are on this level. BUT here are just a few classic storytelling gems that tell long, artful stories with great music (not sure they'd all make good reactions, since some live versions aren't as good and are usually shortened. But maybe you'll enjoy some new music!):
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant - Billy Joel (I'm sure you know this one already.)
Jungleland - Bruce Springsteen (The Tempe 1980 video would make a great reaction!)
    Telegraph Road - Dire Straits
    2112 - Rush
    Cygnus X-1 - Rush
Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres - Rush
The Wall - Pink Floyd (The entire album tells a story! The movie is a great tie-in too.)
    Dogs - Pink Floyd
Sheep - Pink Floyd (once again, the entire Animals album follows a concept)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd

Very respected by his peers including Bruce Dickinson and David Bowie. A very underrated band outside of the progressive music world. Maiden still makes storytelling music like this. Check out Empire of the Clouds or The Writing on the Wall from their latest records. And you should look into prog music for a bigger part of that storytelling niche. I highly recommend Ayreon's albums for that. Check out The Theatrer Equation or Electric Castle Live and Other Tales if you want that kind of thing in a live setting.

Hey Beth. Love the Iron Maiden reaction. You used the right words, human story telling, imagination and art rock. They've always reminded me of Uriah Heep with David Byron, from the early-mid '70s, who I love. Here is a link to a YT channel that features NEW and CURRENT heavy metal bands in the vein of NWOBHM like Iron Maiden. I've been listening to this channel for about 5 years now and it's very interesting in how much is available today. Cheers!

    Amazing.
