Dio is one of a kind, he truly transcends musical genres. There's a lot of great metal/hard rock bands and an endless list of great vocalists.... but Dio is truly on a tier of his own. His voice, his lyrics, his theatrics performing live... there will never be anyone quite like Ronnie James Dio. Especially with Tony Iommi/Geezer Butler, Black Sabbath, as his "backing" band as Heaven & Hell in the 2000s. He was great in the 80s and just as goosebumps inducing in 2012.
He was so talented vocally, it almost feels like he was toying with us, showing us some skills and holding back some too. DIo could effectively do just about anything with his voice.
"Master Storyteller" is the perfect description of Dio. He's one of, imo THE greatest rock/metal vocalist of all time. Not just because his voice is absolutely stunning, but also the lyrics and incredible theatrics while performing.... he's like a great fantasy novel come to life in the form of metal ballards. What's even crazier is that Dio sounds even better live than he does on studio albums. From the 80s until the mid 2000s with Heaven & Hell, Dio's voice somehow got even better with age. Dio, especially with Black Sabbath/Heaven & Hell backing him is truly some of the greatest modern music ever created, bar none it's the best rock/metal music you can find. The most remarkable thing about Dio is that, according to him, he's 100% self taught and never took a vocal lesson in his life.... and yet he, like you said, he's larger than live and completely commands not just the stage, but the entire arena.
Ronnie was undoubtedly one of the best metal vocalists of all time. But he's a legend because of his songwriting and his stage presence as well. He learned that because at this point he was almost 25 years into his career, having started as a teenager. It also let him figure out his own style. Great reaction!
My first concert was Dio in 1984 🤘🏼 I was blown away and immediately became obsessed with Dio and his style of singing, I became a metal guitarist BUT my dream was becoming a lead singer like Ronnie was
That tour was absolutely insane! It was his "Million Dollar Light Show", which was unheard of at the time, and he had Craig Goldy on guitar. It was one of the best times I had ever seen DIO and his voice was absolutely incredible the entire night. You're so awesome for listening to him, Beth. Thank you!
True.. But it lead to the split, where Campbell left. Dio wanted a great and over the top tour, and made Bain and Campbell to give away a big part of their credits to fund the stagework, which also meant more crew etc. Bain and Appice were not over the top about it, while Campbell felt that RJD should've taken a bigger share of the bill since it was kind of his "dream". Kind of sad, since it was a good team. Though I would claim Goldy is a better shredder, I feel Vivs contribuition was slightly more memorable. Better riffs and contribution to songs like "Last in line".
@@andreaspedersen3952 The thing is though, what has Campbell done since? Picked up a paycheck in boring Def Leppard, whereas what everyone remembers him for is the great Dio albums of the 80's. If Viv had seen the bigger picture maybe he'd be a more significant figure in rock/metal today rather than the guy that used to play for Dio. We're still watching and admiring this document that Viv unfortunately didn't play on through his own choice. I would agree though that Craig is the better soloist, it's a pity Ronnie never tried the dual lead guitarist thing at some point.
Like you said on your “ rainbow in the dark “ video reaction. Dio is one of the best singers ever lived. When he sings “ we are fire “ on this song, the sound of his voice on “ fire “ ir is just amazing.
Dio is regarded as one of the best rock/metal vocalist. He said he had no formal singing training but attributes is great breathe control from playing trumpet in High School.
I love watching all of the reaction videos by vocal coaches and fans of different genres realizing that across the entire spectrum of music, Ronnie James Dio is one of the greatest vocal talents of all time. He is receiving his much deserved accolades and still creating a dedicated audience. I've been listening to him since 1983 and I still get chills listening to him. R.I.P RJD.
Epic song and performance. I love how Dio can sing so gently and then explode to so heavy in an instant. Dio has one of the greatest voices of all time. Apparently Dio was trained in opera at a younger age but he can sing anything.
Love these songs and Dio is still my favourite male vocalist all these years later. It's been great learning the technical aspects of what makes him so special.
I love Dio. He played at a bar where I live and he and the rest of the band were very nice to all who wanted to meet them after the show. He signed everything that you brought to him. The rest of the band was very gracious to all of us as well.
You can thank Ritchie Blackmore for that. He saw the way Ritchie was on the road when Elf opened for Deep Purple, and when they were in Rainbow together. Ronnie told a story once where they were on tour in England and there were fans waiting around the stage door when the band arrived for soundcheck. It was pouring rain, but they had driven a couple of hours to see the show. Some of them were there specifically to see Ritchie and get autographs, like any fan would. Ronnie spent about a half-hour or so talking with them and signed autographs for everyone. After the show, they're waiting by the stage door, in the rain, to see Ritchie. Ritchie comes out the door, gets immediately in their waiting car, and drives back to the hotel. Never even acknowledged them. From that point on, Ronnie vowed that he'd never treat anyone who came to see him like that, and he'd stay until everyone got something signed. He also made certain that the guys in the band did the same.
I love Dio, I saw him a year or so before he died, and he still sounded great, but the only way he was ever 5'4" was if he was wearing 4 or 5 inch platforms. He was 5 foot at best, maybe 4'11".😀😀😀
Mr. Dio. Those of us who have been listening to him since the very early 70's, never get tired of watching someone admire his unequaled talent. This was a brilliant tour and one of the best stage shows I have ever seen. His ab lib section that connected "Last in Line" to the start of "Holy Diver" is one of my favorite live moments of his. So tender and then so powerful. Ronnie got in the habit of bringing his own microphone when he would guest on others material. The reason, he would often overload their microphones from sheer volume and sound pressure. There is a great story of this when Dio did his part for the movie "The Pick of Destiny". He blew their microphone right out of commission! Twisted Sister lead sister Dee Snider recently said that Ronnie wasn't a good front man. Just absurd. All the times I saw him it was nearly impossible to take my eyes off him. THAT is all the evidence I need! Again, his trumpet training is probably the single most important part of his history. Getting to the high level of proficiency that he did, (could have gone to Julliard) really taught him breath control and how not to over push. Everything else just came from Heaven. He never warmed up. Smoked, loved beer and would walk out cold and do what we just heard. No one will ever be able to match that again!
Dee is crazy if he is saying that. If there is anyone that was the optimal frontman and even more so the optimal heavy metal singer it was Dio, i cant even imagine what a representation of a metal frontman would be today if it wasnt for Dio.
You need to read Dee's full comments to get what he was saying. I will do my best to paraphrase. He was quantifying how different singers entertain crowds. Some (like himself) may not have the best voices (his words) but put on a big show by running around the stage, getting right in the crowds face, get them to sing and keep them crowd on the edge of their seat. He called that style "front man". Others, like Dio, use the power of their voice to keep a crowd entertained and don't have to go over the top with the rock n roll antics and crowd interaction. He called that "performer". Others again, like Alice Cooper, put together a super tight performance, where everything is perfectly choreographed like a Broadway show to make the most entertaining thing they can, barely acknowledging the crowd. Like in a theater. And as you can see in this clip, Dio doesn't do the "front man" thing (as per Dee's definition), he does the "performer" thing. And that works for him as a musician, and it works for his fans. Dee's comments were fairly typical music nerd comments, in that music nerds like to classify and give names to musical phenomena. It's how we study and learn things 😀 No one is dragging anyone and everything is pretty awesome. Go heavy metal 🤘
@@AlexxxNZ Dee apparently has his views of what a frontman is and of course has a right to like anyone but i dont agree with his conclusions in this case. A front man to me is someone that really grabs the audience with their expressiveness and performance rather than some silly running around on the stage clownery, Dio really had that connection to the audience which would " keep the crowd on the edge of their seat" and he moved around enough and made everyone feel that they were the chosen one and had some sing alongs and such to get the audience more involved. Some singers seem to prioritise running around over actually singing so that the singing suffers let alone some of the pop artists that dance so that they have to mime to their music since they are so out of breath, that is clearly the wrong priority.
Me to but he will always be with us through his music, that one of the beauties of music and art, it lives on long after the artist has left this life.
Funny that you mentioned Dio in the studio. He always needed to bring his own microphone, because his voice was too strong for regular mics. Dio sang a short fragment for the movie "Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny", and there's a "making of" where they discussed this.
I've been listening to Dio for so long that the best thing is to see it hit someone fresh, because it reminds me of just how exceptional he was. I was lucky enough to see him and his band live in 2003 and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Dio live in Philly 86 was the first record i have ever bought, heaven and hell is a must see he just plays the roll and the devil so well. and i will also recommend heaven and hell - the mob rules 2007 there is a note coming out of Dio in the opening scream of that song that i have never heard him sing before and bare in mind he was 65 there.
Yeah, i remember that note, it was crazy high and very surpricing first i heard it, it was as if a little girl would have screamed, it was that high. I guess he could do things with his voice that we hardly even heard, he was a true vocal master.
You’re very welcome, thank you for your kind words. I agree, Ronnie was a huge talent and a phenomenal performer. He had such a powerful and expressive voice. I loved his song. 🙌
I like how I can listen to a legendary vocalist like Dio, without knowing what it is that makes him special, you just listen and know he’s on a whole other level. Then I can listen to an expert tell me WHY he’s so good. Like, we all love Dio, but most of us aren’t Vocal experts.
Fun fact: Dio had a special mic that he always brought with him and used. Particularly in more modern recordings he made. He would bring this more old school mic with him as modern recording equipment could not correctly capture the raw nature of his voice.
I have seen Ronnie do his thing a number of times and I would say that his gigs are the best I have ever seen. I have also met Ronnie three times and he was such a lovely guy.
1986 was my first time seeing Dio live, and my first real concert. I was blown away every second of the show, no one comes close to Dio for me when it comes to story telling, power, sound, stage presence and stage show. So glad I saw him more than once, absolutely amazing.
Finally! I have requested this to just about everyone I watch except you and here it is. A master vocalist and entertainer, even for the non metal heads. Thank you for reacting to this.
RJD is my very favorite performer of all time he sang from rhe time he was a teenager with Ronnie and the red caps, Ronnie Dio and the prophets singing doo wop style teenage songs of the late 50s then on to the electric elves, and Elf, in the 60s doing a bit more rock n roll then in the early 70s he was in rainbow with Ritchie Blackmore and was amazing, then he replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath then in rhe early 80s he formed DIO and sang and performed until his death such a humble, talented man who always put the fans first truly a legend
His band, “The Electric Elves”, later changed to just “Elf” used to play at the Cuba Lake Pavillion which was a couple of miles from my home, I used to go see them often.
Ronnie would sign autographs after every show. I went after a concert , he asked me why I limp and told him I was shot and he gave me a hug. The guy was the sweetest man in the world and I get misty eyed thinking about that. 🤟🏻😢 His shows were always amazing. I consider myself fortunate to have seen Black Sabbath with all 3 singers live. Dio was the best.
Meeting this Giant of a manis among the best memories of my life. In 1991 my Father took me with him backstage to meet the bands. Had no idea of who they were cause I was 5. Meet Ronnie and for the following 19 Years he always took his time to say HI to a kid that at first meeting was a bit shy, hiding behind his father.
I'm so thankful that me and my friends saw not only that tour Last in Line in southern California but several others as well before he passed Ronnie is the man. I remember buying the cassette and album and wore them out The last in lone tour was amazing He is such a powerful storytelling and that band is one pf the all time best metal bands of all time
I love it that you enjoy the same music I grew up on. I can see you really feeling it. I think that's amazing. If? No one. Said? It here before. Ronnie's. The one who created the iconic rock and roll devil horn finger sign. For real 🤘🏽😝🤘🏽
Hi Beth! Happy to see your reaction video again, especially you're in a cheerful ambiance ; but when you shed some tears just like the way you did the other day it can bring sadness in your followers heart; cause me, mostly, i had to be brave to continue the viewing of your reaction video on Lara Fabian "je suis malade". Be blessed Beth. Keep up the good work.
I was 15 and my dad got us tickets to see him live. Dio was my favourite band and it was going to be my first time ever seeing him live, and one of my first concerts at all. Then the show got cancelled because of the stomach cancer and he died. Let me tell you, it was like being denied God. All this time later and I'm still gutted that I never got to see someone whose music was so important to me play live. He meant a lot to me, and a lot of people like me. Absolute. Fucking. Legend.
I saw this tour when I was young. About half way through the show, I suddenly realized that even though I was way in the back rows and he was tiny onstage, I could still see every finger of his hand when he made a gesture. It was the energy, the clarity and the specificity of his performance that made it possible, I think. His was simply the greatest live performer I've ever seen in any genre.
I was graced with the opportunity to see and hear RJD sing in both Black Sabbath on the "Heaven and Hell" tour and multiple times with Dio as headliners. He was terrific every single time. I do have a personal Dio story. I graduated high school in 1982, and immediately started singing in a local rock band. We were doing a gig at a local watering hole, and noticed a commotion toward the front door of the place. At first all we saw was this absolute mountain of a man walk through, followed by two other guys. Those two other guys happened to be Dio himself and his guitarist Vivian Campbell. They sat and had a few drinks while we finished up our set. We had a chance to sit with them and chat for a bit before the end of the night. They turned out to be really nice, down to earth guys. It was a great experience.
I had the pleasure of seeing him live for both the Holy Diver and Last in Line tours. He was the ultimate showman, great singer, very personable and the entire band was amazing. the feeling was absolutely electric.

HE is the ONE and ONLY ! I had a real bad bike crash in Aug. 84 and stayed in coma for about 7 or 11 days, don't remember. My parents, sitting beside my bed in hospital's I.C.U. playing Dio songs to my ears (with kinda tape recorder) and some day I opened up my eyes again and started my "second life" (with the age of 18) So DIO (what means GOD in english, some might not know ?) saved my life somehow 🙂 and therefore he's been theme of my first tattoo. Dee's comments were fairly typical music nerd comments, in that music nerds like to classify and give names to musical phenomena. It's how we study and learn things 😀
No one is dragging anyone and everything is pretty awesome.
@@AlexxxNZ very valid points
Every Saturday I have a BEER for Dio, to remember him. RIP DIO. Thank you for your great reaction.
It is never a bad idea to go back and enjoy the brilliance of RJD... so good...
Agreed!
Miss RJD so bad.
😢❤
One of the greatest singers and frontmen in history. No matter what Dee Snider says.
As a Dee Snider fan, he's mad and said that because he didn't have the same image Dio had. Dio was definitely a better singer and frontman
What did Dee Snyder say? Nevermind F*** him
Dio live in Philly 86 was the first record i have ever bought, heaven and hell is a must see he just plays the roll and the devil so well. and i will also recommend heaven and hell - the mob rules 2007 there is a note coming out of Dio in the opening scream of that song that i have never heard him sing before and bare in mind he was 65 there.
Yeah, i remember that note, it was crazy high and very surpricing first i heard it, it was as if a little girl would have screamed, it was that high. I guess he could do things with his voice that we hardly even heard, he was a true vocal master.
Thank you Beth for amazing reaction on this HUGE performance by Ronnie ❤
You’re very welcome, thank you for your kind words. I agree, Ronnie was a huge talent and a phenomenal performer. He had such a powerful and expressive voice. I loved his song. 🙌
Greatest metal singer, he was the best. Always remembered.
With his voice and writing of music and lyrics through the decades, he's one of the absolute biggest and best.
I like how I can listen to a legendary vocalist like Dio, without knowing what it is that makes him special, you just listen and know he’s on a whole other level. Then I can listen to an expert tell me WHY he’s so good. Like, we all love Dio, but most of us aren’t Vocal experts.
studio. he stands. Holds his Hands to his headphones...and sings. Effortlessly there's videos of him in studio
You’re welcome, Glenn! A pleasure I’m glad you enjoyed my reaction to this amazing performance.
Thank you for your support and request. 😊
Legend....Saw em 3x...Great every time.....RIP
One of the all-time greats for sure. And gone way too soon as well....
It's nice to see you appreciate him. Thanks for sharing.
I'm so thankful that me and my friends saw not only that tour Last in Line in southern California but several others as well before he passed
Ronnie is the man. I remember buying the cassette and album and wore them out
The last in lone tour was amazing
He is such a powerful storytelling and that band is one pf the all time best metal bands of all time
Don't worry Beth. I've been obsessed with him for the last 30 years. It only gets better!❤
I love it that you enjoy the same music I grew up on. I can see you really feeling it. I think that's amazing.
If? No one. Said? It here before. Ronnie's. The one who created the iconic rock and roll devil horn finger sign.
For real
🤘🏽😝🤘🏽
Dio was and always will be the best heavy metal singer to ever walk the face of the earth. Period. There will never be another one like him.
I was so fortunate to have gotten to know Ronnie. In fact there's an image of me on the Evil or Divine dvd.
The man with the mighty voice.🤘🤘 Thank you Beth for the dance ❤❤
All Dio lovers should read his biography 'Rainbow in the Dark'. 🤘
I had the pleasure of seeing him live for both the Holy Diver and Last in Line tours. He was the ultimate showman, great singer, very personable and the entire band was amazing. the feeling was absolutely electric.
Dio and Carlin. Two deaths I have never accepted and never will.
Why not?
U hit every point perfectly!!! Incredible review !!! I was lucky enough to see Dio at least 10 times… he’s one of the greatest ever !!
Thank you so much for your kind words Doug, I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoyed my review of the Dio song! It's amazing how music can bring back memories and emotions. By the way, I'm also a musician and have a track on Spotify. If you have a moment, I would love it if you could check it out. Hey, cool...I saw that tour in 86. Dio in his absolute prime. Yngwie opened.
I love the mix of holy diver last in line and children of the sea, fantastic
There was nobody better than Ronnie James Dio this is the first time seeing this performance I really miss this guy
Gotta love Dio! Thank you Beth for another wonderful Dio-dive! Love your channel.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m happy you love Dio as much as I do. He was a phenomenal singer and a metal icon. I appreciate your support for my channel. 🙏
Had the pleasure of seeing him (DIO) perform twice. What an amazing artist. Seriously. R.I.Eternity big guy!!!
Even now he is still a Very Special Man. Legendary Master.
My favorite DIO is still "All the Fools Sailed Away" You should check it out.
There's an excellent documentary on Dio called "dreamers never die" - highly recommended
Haven't seen a Roars video for at least a cpl yrs. Great day to come back with 2 of the greatest. Ty B😊
Thank you for your comment. I’m happy to see you back on my channel. I’m glad you enjoyed my Dio video! He is amazing. Thank you for your support.
I had the chance to meet Dio in 1984 in Alaska. Nice this guy ever.....
As a Millennial, I was so lucky to see him in 2004, perform live. Killing the Dragon is still my favorite vocal performance, studio and live.
A little guy with a super big voice who knew how to grab the audiences attention.
The legend R.J.D 🤘
The 86 tour was awesome. I was at a coliseum show with only about 5,000 people and Ol Ronnie performed like the place was packed to the rafters. He was an absolute legend for his showmanship, performing ability and pure "show must go on" commitment
I'm still awaiting the day when one of you wonderful vocal coaches reacts to Rainbow - Mistreated liive in Munich 1977. Pure gold
That whole live concert is pure gold, personally i prefer the Rainbow songs rather than this Deep purple song even though he does it great no doubt .
@@Stefan- pure gold for me too because my first rock gig was Rainbow a couple of months later
these musicians never come back, maybe in another dimension and life.....DIO DIO THE GOD
Dio did a great show in Vegas back in the 90s.. electric and surreal standing up close in a small venue!! Great reactions Beth!!😏
Thank you for your comment, Rich. I’m glad you enjoyed my reaction to Dio. He was an amazing singer and performer who had a powerful voice and a charismatic presence. I’m sure he did a great show in Vegas back in the 90s. I wish I could have seen him live! I hope you keep watching my videos and don’t forget to like and subscribe.
RJD was a master of light touches and theatrics. 🙏 🪦
I saw Dio on this tour. It was a wonderful experience!
I'm giddy like a school girl that you reacted to Dio. My first concert ever Met Center Bloomington MN 16-Oct-1986.
Was lucky enough to see him 3x in about 13 months during this time...just great shows, with the ultimate front man.
HE is the ONE and ONLY !
I had a real bad bike crash in Aug. 84 and stayed in coma for about 7 or 11 days, don't remember.
My parents, sitting beside my bed in hospital's I.C.U. playing Dio songs to my ears (with kinda tape recorder)
and some day I opened up my eyes again and started my "second life" (with the age of 18)
So DIO (what means GOD in english, some might not know ?) saved my life somehow 🙂 and therefore he's been theme of my first tattoo.

Got to see Dio once, live, and it was this tour. So good!
Always horns up for Dio! 🤘🤘
🤘🤘
Amazing reaction Beth! I love watching your channel! It has helped me I'm my singing and technique! Thank you 😊
Thank you, Ron! I’m so glad you enjoy my channel. 😊 It’s awesome that my reaction videos have helped you with your singing and technique. That’s one of the goals of my channel. Thank you for your support and feedback. 🙏
I had the great privilege to see dio in rainbow Black Sabbath and in his solo career. What a giant he was. RIP. My brother 🤘
Still have my ticket stub from this" Last in line " tour in the 80s. RIP BROTHER ❤️😔 🇺🇸
He was amazing as a singer and as a person. I was lucky to see him twice once in the 80s and again in the 90s fronting Black Sabbath.
Rob Zombie is another absolute giant on stage despite being only 5' 4". You nailed the stage presence description, Beth. True frontmen have a way of using the whole stage with body language and feeling. Great video!
You sure? Google says 5' 10" 😄
@Phil I have a friend who saw Rob Zombie at a small town grocery store, and my friend, who is about 5' 5", said Zombie was shorter than him. I trust my source. Also, ya can't trust everything you read on Google.
Such an Intelligent ,honest empathetic man he was check out any interview
