Even though you guys aren't a fan of their music, I'm glad you can appreciate the talent. They're one of the better live bands around even now in their 60's. Cheers!
It's a long song and it's a homer type tune . So hats off for trying it . It's awesome but corny in a way . Kinda great when your 14 . And good if you love maiden . If you don't ? Maybe .
It was Interesting to watch this again after the recent reactions on patreon. I still think there’s a chance this band might click for you guys. I’ve been saying it for a while and so have others on patreon. You guys have only heard 80’s Iron Maiden, specifically only songs from a total of four albums, they have seventeen albums guys. Take some time away but come back at some point and do a poll of just post 2000 Iron Maiden. I really think it might appeal to you more and might help you get into the band and start to maybe appreciate the earlier material as well. Their newer stuff is way less gallopy, it’s heavier, they’re older so Bruce isn’t singing quite as high as he did. And the songs are generally much longer and epic in nature. Empire of the Clouds in particular would be a fascinating one to see you guys react to, it’s their longest song yet (18 minutes) and it starts with a piano intro played by Bruce. It’s a completely different flavor of Maiden than you’ve experienced so far.
I saw the patron video but seeing it here again made me want to comment. I know how you guys feel about Maiden but regardless I’m glad you got to see them do this song live. Like them or not there’s no doubt they’re one of the greatest live bands ever. Bruce Dickenson sings on albums what would be pretty much impossible to replicate live for most singers and he does it almost flawlessly.
Absolutely a masterpiece. Saw them live at Rockfest a week ago, a 110% performance even if they didn't do the mariner then. My favourite band since 1983
Iron Maiden it's not a band, it's an experience. When you go to a Maiden show it's like watching a heavy metal broadway play. Bruce Dickinson is not just a singer, he is an actor, a showman, an entertainer. When they are performing live, they are a well oiled machine, even now. Go to see them live if you can, you are not gonna regret it.
im not gonna lie iron maiden was one of the best shows ive seen. i saw them during their first "final tour" run back in like 2010 ish? i honestly dont remember. they have since done a few more "final tour" tours and i saw them there too, but that first final tour show i saw they played for like 3.5 hours. i will say the only downside of seeing iron maiden live is hearing bruce say " scream for me "insert city name here"" for half of the show.
"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is the longest epic poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, which Iron Maiden takes this from about a sea captain who is cursed for killing the albatross which according to sailor lore is a sign of good omen. The fact that Bruce Dickenson can not only sing this but remember all the lyrical content is astonishing
Maiden got their popularity from word of mouth. People going to watch their live shows at pubs. My dad has some drum sticks from seeing them in a pub back when D'anno was the lead singer.
Seriously, the most boring band I've EVER seen live by miles. Saw them in a pub in the early years, they weren't bad then as a punk band with metal guitars.
Saw them in Belgrade on 24th of May, god damn they killed it! My eyes were full of tears in most of the time while they played...Just jaw dropping what they do in their age!
I think part of the reason they're still this tight live is I don't think they ever really got caught up in the partying and drug excess of the 80's like so many of their peers and they just focused on bring a solid performance every single time. Probably one of the reasons they're still so respected.
@@travistotle Very true, Maiden are real professionals (in the best sense of the word) which is why they still do so good despite being in their 60s by now.
@@fleskip I know this is an old comment but I had to answer it... bullshit... that is all... you're welcome to your opinion. I have been a musician for 30 years and they are indeed tight live. Not sure what your benchmark is and I probably don't want to tbh... scared to hear what you would say.
Iron Maiden are a unique phenomenon in music. The creativity of their writing is second to none. If you expect the typical verse- chorus, verse -chorus arrangement like in most music, you will not get that with Maiden. Maiden tell stories, the music reflects the emotion of the song, so there are many musical pieces to each song written brilliantly. Maiden is not a band that you will hear and love right away. You need to develop the ear for them, they are a band's band. EXAMPLE: Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a song that begins with a sailor that walks into a wedding. He begins telling the wedding guests about the nightmare journey he literally just had at sea. Each part musically follows the story. He was in a boat with 200 men going to catch fish. An albatross flies by him, he shoots it which is bad luck. It begins storming, the crew is stuck in the sea for days with no water to drink. Bad shit keeps happening. They blame the mariner, because he killed the bird of good omen. The crew tie the albatross around the mariners neck. One night the mariner is sitting in the ship, suddenly one by one the crew start dropping dead, and as they drop dead they each stare the mariner in his eyes. They all die, and he's freaked out, tied up with a big bird tied around his neck. He frees himself, takes the albatross off his neck, throws it into the sea. Immediately it starts storming, he can drink, but the ship is caught in giant waves. He says a prayer and asks God that if he spares him, he promises that he will tell everyone he meets about what happened and how God saved him, and that we must love all of Gods creatures. He falls asleep. When he awakens, he can't believe his eyes; the entire crew is alive and are pulling into shore. The Mariner leaves the ship in utter shock and confusion. He wanders off and into a ship where a wedding is taking place. The story ends where it began, he is telling the wedding guests the story of what happened, just as he promised God. The song ends with the lyrics: The Mariner is bound to tell of his story. To tell his tale wherever he goes. To teach God's Word by his own example. That we must love all things that God made.... The genius of this song, and so many more of their songs is how they capture the events of the song with the music. There are no true verses and choruses, the song is written to project the story, and it is done in a way unique to Iron Maiden. It's fun deciphering their songs. If you want to hear more I would say check out a couple of songs off the new album, Senjutsu. The songs Hell on Earth has a encrypted message in it. Will it be their last song? Is that what they're saying. Also check out Writing on The Wall (great video), if you like biblical apocalyptic style songs, this song borrows from both Daniel, and Revelation. If you read all this, you are a Trooper! Thank you, and I hope it was worth reading. I love this band more than anything I've ever loved.
My friend tried to get me into Maiden for years to no effect. This song did it for me. I devoured the entire catalog after that and have been a passionate fan for a long time now and never miss a show. Up the irons!
First time i saw them live was the Number of the Beast tour , then again i think it was the Live after Death tour and Megadeth opened for them i think. Either them or Twisted Sister?
I worked as a dishwasher when I was 16 and the prep cook played pretty much only Iron Maiden and Rush. The first Maiden album I bought was Live After Death from 1985 off his recommendation and this song is definitely the one that stuck with me the most. 22 years later and I'm still blasting Maiden
Just found this channel, Iron Maiden fan from way back to the early 80s. The fact that you guys can appreciate the musicianship and production and everything else about this music without actually the style being 'your thing' says a lot about you guys and that is why I am now following you. I'm a metal fan, but not exclusive to any other genre, man I'll listen to anything that makes me tap my fingers on the steering wheel of my car, sing along or just bloody enjoy it, well done guys this is a great source of entertainment and it's always a good thing to get outside opinions on everything in life, how good would the world be if it was filled with people like us eh
The first Maiden song I heard back in 1983 was to Tame A Land. I was not a metal head at the time but I read a lot of science-fiction (still do to this day) but a friend of mine said I should listen to the song because it was about the novel Dune. I immediately fell in love with the band and became a metal head. I bought the record and all the previous ones and started playing bass.
@@Trygvar13 I got Dune when I was 15 and for several years after that I've read the whole series every summer and that's how I got into political sciences. Interesting how the same trigger can send us in different directions, I guess it sparks something we've had inside all along so most likely you would've ended with the same passion for metal and bass even without Dune. But all in all Frank Herbert and Iron Maiden is too much of a combo to resist.
@@Alemiha Too bad Frank Herbert did not like heavy metal. I think he might have liked the song. I've read everything about Dune I could get my hands on. I had the encyclopdia but I gave it away to my local library in the mid 90's.... it's worth a fortune now. I'm now a big fan of the sequels and prequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. They are good but they don't really feel like they belong in the Dune universe, especially the character of Norma Cenva. She was briefly mentioned in God Emperor of Dune but not as the superbeing they made her to be. If you like Dune I would suggest you look up Quinn's Ideas YT channel.
Maiden is one of the best live bands I've ever seen in my concert going life. Ridiculous amount of energy and passion. If you guys ever get a chance to see them I recommend it.
Nicko hit me in the head with a drumstick at this show! This was the "somewhere back in time" tour. I got to see them here and in Boston that tour, and I have to say, it's the best I have ever seen them play!
was supposed to go to this show and at the pnc arts center but had a bad work accident and missed them... saw them when they came around again later in june. \m/
My freshman year in high school (1988), we had a junior in my freshman english class. He had failed twice already. Guy was a hard-core badass metal-head. He had the skull ring, the torn denim jacket with the Iron Maiden patch on the back. He had a spiked dog collar around his neck. Dude was hard core. About three weeks into the class, we're reading this long-ass poem in class when suddenly, the metal-head kid shouts out "I know this one!" slammed his book shut, and began reciting it. Suddenly, he paused. Everyone was looking at him and he was just kinda bobbing his head. He just said "getting through the guitar solo" and suddenly went back to the poem. He passed the class on that alone.
the part were he sings" now down it falls comes the rain" is one of the most powerful dramatic passage's i have ever heard. The build up to the rain just blows everything away the dramatics are un matched
I was there for this concert at IZOD and teared up the moment the song began. I started listening to Maiden in in 1996 when I was 15 and I had waiting 12 years to see this live. It was incredible; Maiden sounds better live than in a studio, always. Up the Irons!
Expert level musicianship and epic storytelling for the most part is what Iron Maiden is all about. They are an experience to behold live but arent for everyone for sure. UP THE IRONS!
Last time i saw them was in 2019 and they were better than when i saw them in the 80's , Bruce's voice was stronger than ever. Also there musicianship is second to none , they're one of the tightest bands ever and still playing at a high level!
You guys got more out of this than we did. What a treat on a Saturday morning. Rhime of the Ancient Mariner live is one of the best live performances you will ever see. Try it on a mushroom, you'll swear you're on the ship. Flash back to 1987. My English teacher announces we're starting a poetry lesson and we need to buckle in because its a long one. She announces it's Rhime of the ancient mariner. My jaw hits the floor. I make a deal with my teacher. If I can do the poem by heart the next day I get an A and I can skip class and surf the rest of the year. Well I did it and surfed my a$$ off the rest of the year and I ended up drawing her Iron Maiden posters for the Renaissance fair. Iron Maiden in Tampa Oct. 27, who's going? Up the irons🤘🤘
This is my all time favorite Iron Maiden songs. The fact that you can sit there and say that a lot of it did not appeal to you says to me that your reactions are real and heartfelt. I salute your honesty and not grifting to appeal to a certain audience. Not everyone will like what every other person likes. I applaud your candor and reaction. Great work, guys!
I get it the sound from twenty four (24) years prior to this show wont have the best audio or visual but even so it would show IM as the true masterclass they were back then. Saying that, I don't understand when these videos post a newer live show when they do their older shows as they were at their height.
Live and they were old. Live, high quality videos in their prime aren't easy to come by. His vocals live through the late 80's were some of the best I ever witnessed. Pretty amazing this is a performance 20 years later.
I love Wasted Years and that entire album, but there was another song on that jam that I liked even more. Right about the time I stopped listening to Maiden, but I'm listening to them once again. Great job, Eddie!
Iron Maiden is not for everyone, not even all metal-heads, they're an acquired taste. I'm grateful that I've loved them since 1984 and have seen them five or so times as well.
For me Maiden have about five or six songs that I like but the rest of their catalogue do bugger all for me so you are correct in your aquired taste comment. Funnily enough I've seen them live a lot of times as well but always at festivals and usually waiting for them to finish ready for a band I really like to come on after them ;-) . But no doubting Maidens skill and craft etc just not a band for me.
Yeah, I remember when I got into metal in the late '80s I didn't really liked them as I was more into thrash metal then. They sounded too "balladistic" to me :) Later I started to appreciate their music and skill and now I love them a lot.
Maiden is about as close to being for everyone as a metal band can be, considering how absurdly humongous they are. Literally every musical act is an acquired taste.
@@rayjones4616 I mean, you can disagree all you want, but you're wrong. I know plenty of people who don't care for Van Halen. Like, that's a very weird example. You're more likely to sell a modern metalhead with gaps in their music history on Maiden than Van Halen.
Bruce Dickenson has an amazing voice, Iron Maiden's live shows sound exactly like the studio recordings and their live shows are a production. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is based off of a poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Most of Iron Maiden's songs are a musical telling of History, myths, legends and literature. Not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but good on you for recognizing the performance.
I've seen this band several times between 1984 (when they toured on the Powerslave album) and 2017. They are highly professional players. You get your money's worth.
Born in the 60s I grew up with Maiden when I was a teen. It’s an acquired taste. Very British and traditional. For a period I didn’t listen to them at all but at some point you go back and they grab you again, maybe partly because of the memories I have. As a fan of progressive music as well I really like their longer epic songs. Just try Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, my fav Maiden song. Great reaction, keep it honest and real.👍
Maiden is the shit. Once their music got in my head and I fell down that rabbit hole, I stayed there for a while discovering all the good stuff in that world. The guitar work is just top notch. 3 epic guitarists. All good musicians. And they're still going strong. I always see them in concert. Heavy Metal Legends.
Up the Irons, Maiden fans. This song is so epic. The poem as interpreted by Maiden is one of the best. All of that audience are die hard Maiden fans. Many know this word for word. When you think about it, a lot of people learn a lot from this band. My boys learned history from many of their songs. This is literary and lyrical at the same time. Amazing song. Brucie sings at 11 for a long time. He is an excellent singer and you are right. The vocal style isn't for everyone. He sounds very strained during the performance probably because he's also performing and running all over the stage.
I’m 41 and have owned the studio album that this is on since I was 8, have heard this song more times than I’ve had a doner kebab, and I have a lot of doner kebabs, and I still get goosebumps when Adrian’s solo comes in
As a fan I know when a great part of the song is coming and I like the way you react to them. It happened with Sabbath, Gojira and Megadeth and it hurts me a bit when Iron Maiden doesn't make you react the way I expected. I guess it's because Maiden is kind of an entry band for the metalheads and we listen to full albums before we decide if we like the artists. When you pick certain songs from an album it loses the connection with the rest of the songs so you don't appreciate them so much. Anyway I'm a big fan of your videos, greetings from Chile.
It is definitely not the story but the storytelling. Its powerful lyrics, intricate musicianship, and theatrical live performance blend literature and music into an unforgettable experience. Truly a masterpiece in rock history.
Also, and you probably already knew this, but it's based on the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. You probably had to read it in an English lit class at some point. But the line "Water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink" and the idiom about something being an albatross around your neck (e.g. an annoying burden) both come from that poem. Here's the text of it if anyone's curious. www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43997/the-rime-of-the-ancient-mariner-text-of-1834 Anyway, great reaction--thank you!
@@kikivon3501 because it has two meanings as far as the theme of the poem goes. Look up the definition of rime. It doesn't mean the same thing as "rhyme."
@@kikivon3501 As Charles Park said, the two words have different meanings. That said, Rime is the archaic spelling of Rhyme as well, and some scholars think that Coleridge (the poet) deliberately chose the archaic spelling (and language in the poem) to give the poem a more mythical feel. You might check out this reading by Ian McKellen (Gandalf's actor)--it's delightful. th-cam.com/video/1raSUYAr0s0/w-d-xo.html Also of note, the poem was originally published in 1798 as The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere, so it's possible that Rime just stuck with it, but I personally think the poet went with that spelling for a reason. If you listen to or read the poem, let me know what you think. Water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink!
Yes this is one of a very few groups who's songs sound just as good live as on there albums , which is not easy to do. Like AC/DC sound like shit live...
@@Black-bn6ic Live they're not as good as Maiden , plus James voice has changed. But Bruce's has gotten even stronger and he had throat cancer. Maiden still put on incredible live shows!
I love that you guys call it like ya hear it. If it ain't for you, you say so. That's real. Now, as far as Maiden being as epic as they were, without radio, is the epitome of the story of metal. They was no network of any kind beyond the fans. Z-Rock was the only radio station for metal, except for a few local stations that would program metal. So, word of mouth is how metal grew.
I've been a metal head since the '90s and have seen a lot of good bands live, but the most memorable and best of my opinion was Iron maiden. I didn't even know that much Iron maiden at the time but they just blew me away and they got up and performed
Not just Europe - they are loved in South America, and Asia! They even went to India twice, where I'm from, and the crowds went absolutely fuckin' CRAZY at the concert!
Great reaction as always! Appreciate the no bullshit approche. For Ryan, I can tell you the album version is even better than the live one which is already phenomenal. If you think Bruce sounds good in this live show, keep in mind that it was 25 years after the original recording. His voice is still great but naturally took a hit with the years. It was even more phenomenal back then. For George, it's normal to not love all genres but your respect for the talent is very appreciated. I would recommand you try the album version befire giving your final verdict. The experience is more refined and the journey is more imersive just like with Opeth with the album version. Was waiting for this for a while and you guys didnt disappoint. It's Aladin btw :)
Yeah, the album version is definitely better than live, as are most of their songs. Seeing them live however, that is an experience like no other. How can anyone not like the gallop riff??? Invented by Maiden, it is the defining riff of metal in almost all genres!
You beat me to it, yes I agree the album version of this has flawless vocals that are harmonized perfectly. Live hits a bit harder though and is a little more dynamic. You guys really should listen o Aces High. Maybe George will like that one.
Great points, and totally agree. I would just like to add that the version on Live After Death in mid-eighties is a better representation of how this song sounded live back then.
This was a nice surprise! I’d seen your other two Maiden reactions, and knew you weren’t really into it, so I didn’t expect another one. They’ve been my favourite band since ‘83, so I appreciate that you (George) are able to appreciate what they do, even if it’s just not for you. While I’m a *huge* fan of Bruce’s vocals, I do think other comments have a point. You may appreciate something off their self-titled or Killers albums. They had a different singer, with a very different vocal style.
Maiden is easily one of the best live acts of the metal genre, unparalleled showmanship. They always play faster live. Big fan of Coleridge so this poem is a classic favorite of mine, incredibly renditioned by Maiden into this epic. Xanadu by Rush covers another of his epic poems, my favorite song from Rush.
Ryan, Maiden took me a little while as well. Bruce’s operatic style like Rush’s vocals took me a little bit of getting used to. But once you connect with them you truly begin to appreciate their music and now I’m a big Maiden fan. Rush as well. It doesn’t hurt that Steve Harris and Geddy Lee are two of my bass playing idols along with Geezer from Sabbath. Three amazing bands.
Going to see them for the 13th time in November ,saw them the first time in 1984, I've grown up with Maiden and will see them anytime I can. Up the irons troopers
1st off Maiden has been my favorite since 1985. I've been going to all sorts of concerts since 1983. This song right here is the best live song ever!!!!
A retelling of "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Coldridge. We listened to it in English class when I was in high school after studying the original poll.
Thank you Nathalie first and to you guys to let this great long music video happen.i can see how you guys were in a awe of what you heard and saw.long live the Beast iron maiden .best rock musicians that ever egsisted on earth.it took me to all kinds of émotions 🤘
Funny thing is that Iron Maiden was probably better in 2008 than in their prime in the 80's. Brucey is so tight indeed in this video. That song is such a masterpiece, I'd like to re-listen to it for the first time... I'm right now re-listening to the whole Iron Maiden discography. Is it so full of hits and deep cuts. So many things to say about it. Take a listening to To Tame a Land for instance. THAT BAND!
Great and honest reaction. When I was 16 I bought the double album Live after Death with Iron Maiden. Hated it at the first listen, but for some reason I kept coming back to it, started loving it and the band. And to this day when I'm more into the gruntiest kinds of death metal, Maiden is still my favorite band. A truly unique band.
This is absolutely, by far, one of the most amazing poems ever written, and one of the most amazing songs ever sung based on the poem. I cry every time i hear it. Every time. It is truly an epic tale, and an omen to remember.
That was a dope video guys. I've listened to maiden ever since I was a kid and I recently (last summer) got to watch them live. Being a part of the crowd as thousands of people hummed to Fear of the Dark was incredible. Never had a feeling like that in a concert before, so you guys were spot on imo. They are amazing performers. I really recommend you guys check out Zeal & Ardor too. It's a somewhat newish metal band that crossed slave spirituals with Norwegian black metal, so imagine an atmospheric black metal song with chain sounds as samples and gospel like chanting, it is super dope. According to the band's frontman, the idea for the music was 'if the slaves that were brought to the US revered the devil instead of Christ, what would their music sound like? Think you guys will really enjoy Zeal & Ardor, it's really unique music.
What I enjoy most about your reactions is that even if you don't particularly like the song you can appreciate why others would. It embodies the "free thinker" point of view.
When a band has 3 killer guitar players and they're All standing by each other in the middle of the stage trading off solos, they are not messing around.
I agree with you. Incredible. I am 62, but i never heard this song sooooo goood. I was musicsaler for over 21 years, but such a great Sound i have never heard in my life. Thanks a lot for this genius choice !!!!!!!
These guys are just sick. So epic. What an awesome song to react too. Nice job guys. I grew up on Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, and Powerslave. We must love all things that god made.
Their lead singer (Bruce Dickinson) recently recovered from throat cancer, and the live footage I've seen post-treatment sounds even better than before.
He beat tongue cancer, he pilots airplanes (like, 747 airplanes), he's a entrepeneur, manages a airplane repair enterprise at some point, and even piloted the own Ed Force One that the band sometimes uses in tours. He's basically a God. And plus, sings in one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
Am I the sole individual who recognizes and appreciates the drummer's remarkable effort and exceptional technique? The drummer's talent is truly awe-inspiring, yet it seems that no one acknowledge or evaluate his skills.
Iron Maiden with worldwide fans still to this day of all types. Music with subjects of history, wars and literature . Music with a journey of tempo changes and virtuoso skilled musicians. Up The Irons!
I was at this show!!! My one friend was so drunk he slept through this whole song, but I was stoked they played it. Love what y'all do, and love your extra videos on Patreon.
This live version is GREAT, the band is “Tight” and they are playing it JUST LIKE THE RECORD… except the energy and excitement of a audience is tangible, now Bruce’s vocal are really, really good except compared to the studio album, it’s different, it’s 17-19 years after he recorded the studio version, which you absolutely have to check out , you listen to the live version and think the vocals are great, which they are, the album version is INCREDIBLE.. check it out and gees the song lyrically is a great story… check em out a little deeper when ya give a listen to the studio version….it makes the song even better than just a groove… which the groove is great, the whole song is a masterpiece to me…..
This is an older Patreon exclusive filmed in 2019 guys! We've had this in the tuck for years fyi. Enjoy!
Even though you guys aren't a fan of their music, I'm glad you can appreciate the talent. They're one of the better live bands around even now in their 60's. Cheers!
You guys rock.
This ain't just music, this is an artistic masterpiece.
You are 100% correct! This song is so epic. I get chills everytime I hear this, it is that great.
My all time favorite Iron Maiden song. This performance just adds to how great the band and this song truly are.
Yeahh 🤘🏼🤘🏼
100% agree. Nothing else to discuss
You are right, I just did that two days ago in Kaunas.
Also an 747 pilot
A religion*
im not gonna lie iron maiden was one of the best shows ive seen. i saw them during their first "final tour" run back in like 2010 ish? i honestly dont remember. they have since done a few more "final tour" tours and i saw them there too, but that first final tour show i saw they played for like 3.5 hours. i will say the only downside of seeing iron maiden live is hearing bruce say " scream for me "insert city name here"" for half of the show.
Facts I have seen them 7 times.
Bravo 🍻
"To have an albatross around your neck."
whiskey in the jar is an irish folk song
Now their longest song is Empire of the Clouds from the album The Book of Soul
This. That's what makes Maiden so great, songs about Alexander the Great and Dune. As a young lad they inspired me to crack a book and get learned.
Maiden got their popularity from word of mouth. People going to watch their live shows at pubs. My dad has some drum sticks from seeing them in a pub back when D'anno was the lead singer.
Iron Maiden cannot be matched live. They always put on an epic show, even now at their age 🤘
Seeing them for the 13th time in October. No other band matches them live.
Seriously, the most boring band I've EVER seen live by miles. Saw them in a pub in the early years, they weren't bad then as a punk band with metal guitars.
That actually is an epic show, because of the definition of "epic".
I’d put Judas Priest pretty close
Saw them in Belgrade on 24th of May, god damn they killed it!
My eyes were full of tears in most of the time while they played...Just jaw dropping what they do in their age!
The whole Powerslave album is pretty legit honestly. It is arguably their best album.
I agree. My top 5?
1. NOTB
2. Powers lave
3. Piece of Mind
4. Killers
5. Somewhere In Time
Somewhere in time, powerslave ans seventh son
Somewhere In Time super legit but Power Slave on it’s on planet 🌎 for me.
Powerslave got the most play from me as a teenager! That and Killers.
Any of the first seven are a legit answer but Seventh Son I believe is #1
The song is based on the epic poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge that was supposedly inspired by an opium dream he had.
Coleridge is the great underappreciated romantic poet. Also had a bunch of horny poems about his ex. Good stuff.
Word .
I'm pretty sure that origin story is for his poem Kubla Khan (though I guess it could be the case for both works).
@@DrMackSplackem No, you are correct. But let's just say that ALL epic poems were composed because of an opium, or a cheese, dream.
We all know that. Even "L.I.V." know that. I'm sure!
Man, the build up to Smithy's solo. Goosebumps every time.
agreed
Still hits the same as it did in '84
Hell yeah !Amen! 🤘
This is without a doubt one of Maiden's very best songs. Overall composition, riffing, thematic stylings, Bruce's voice... it has everything.
Maiden is literally THIS TIGHT live. AND in the studio. They deserve your respect.
Haha, Maiden is anything but tight live. They put up a hell of a show tho
@@Dexusaz tell that to Sharon Osbourne.
@@fleskip I know this is an old comment but I had to answer it... bullshit... that is all... you're welcome to your opinion. I have been a musician for 30 years and they are indeed tight live. Not sure what your benchmark is and I probably don't want to tbh... scared to hear what you would say.
Niko is absolutely hammer on this tune. He always is, but this is so epic.
Are you outta your McBrain?
I luv that Nico drums barefoot

You have the best friend in the world dude!!!

Maiden was word of mouth, the t- shirts and going to a buddy's house and cranking it up!
You've got to be almost perfect to make it that way. Maiden did it......

All things being equal, they are the greatest band in the history of Metal.
And it's not even close!
Over a year this comment has been up and not a single person has disagreed. Maiden rules

You have been blessed by sir mcbrain
HEAR HEAR !!!
That actually is epic storytelling, because of the definition of "epic".
Last time i saw them was in 2019 and they were better than when i saw them in the 80's , Bruce's voice was stronger than ever. Also there musicianship is second to none , they're one of the tightest bands ever and still playing at a high level!
Iron Maiden, the undisputed undefeated heavy weight champions of live concert, no band come close. awesome review as always guys. cheers.
AC/DC
Agree wholeheartedly. Saw them live just last week and they are still knocking it out of the park. Fantastic band.
Priest!
I'd agree if it weren't for King Diamond.
tbf Rammstein put on a very impressive show, I was fortunate enough to see them both at the same festival....
Maiden are one of those bands that however good they sound on record, live is the true way to experience them.
I was at this show with my co-worker that evening! Excellent performance!

Iron always makes me cry, my heart almost explodes... What a thrill!
That was an amazing performance! Thanks for that guys..... again, Architects!!!

If you thought this live performance was great, then check out Fear of the Dark live in Rio by Iron Maiden. There's nothing like it.
the "death and she life in death" section is one of the greatest parts in metal history . the live after death 84 version is even more powerful.
Yes!!
Yes I agree Long Beach 84 or rio 85 gives me cold chills
Yeah, Live After Death is a great live record, and that version of this song is a killer.
I get it the sound from twenty four (24) years prior to this show wont have the best audio or visual but even so it would show IM as the true masterclass they were back then.
Saying that, I don't understand when these videos post a newer live show when they do their older shows as they were at their height.
Sccrrreeeeeaaammmm for me Long Beach!!!!!!!!!!
Live and they were old. Live, high quality videos in their prime aren't easy to come by.
His vocals live through the late 80's were some of the best I ever witnessed. Pretty amazing this is a performance 20 years later.
You're damn right this is tight - they've been playing this song for almost 40 years.
The best Maiden song for you guys to vibe to is definitely Wasted Years. You’ll be singing along to the chorus by the end of the song!
You nailed it on this one….. the guitar work and vocals on ‘Wasted Years’ will have Ryan and George in tears.
I love Wasted Years and that entire album, but there was another song on that jam that I liked even more. Right about the time I stopped listening to Maiden, but I'm listening to them once again. Great job, Eddie!
Music in itself makes me emotional, but Wasted Years makes me cry like a damn fool every time. In such the best way, of course.
Wasted years is my favorite Maiden song. And I LOVE Maiden.
They reacted to some of it in their last Iron Maiden Patreon Post.
@@toamcdohl I couldn't disagree more. Everyone loves Van Halen, everyone loved Dio, I know many rockers and metal-heads who don't care for Maiden.
@@rayjones4616 I mean, you can disagree all you want, but you're wrong. I know plenty of people who don't care for Van Halen. Like, that's a very weird example. You're more likely to sell a modern metalhead with gaps in their music history on Maiden than Van Halen.
One of the best riff-o-rama instrumental sections in the history of rock 'n' roll right here.
Iron Maiden is easily in my top 5 fave bands. Seeing them live is an experience one should not miss.
You can literally react to any song on "Powerslave" and you won't be disapointed.
It's that good.
An absolute heavy metal classic.
I've seen this band several times between 1984 (when they toured on the Powerslave album) and 2017. They are highly professional players. You get your money's worth.
I been an Iron Maiden fan since 1982 and this is the only surviving rock band without trying to survive or doing farewell tours just to stay alive.
Up the irons !
Agreed but Metallica who is that kind of a big deal guy

Absolutely agree and this is an epic song!
Here's the text of it if anyone's curious. www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43997/the-rime-of-the-ancient-mariner-text-of-1834
Anyway, great reaction--thank you!
Why is it Rime and not Rhyme
@@kikivon3501 because it has two meanings as far as the theme of the poem goes. Look up the definition of rime. It doesn't mean the same thing as "rhyme."
@@kikivon3501 As Charles Park said, the two words have different meanings. That said, Rime is the archaic spelling of Rhyme as well, and some scholars think that Coleridge (the poet) deliberately chose the archaic spelling (and language in the poem) to give the poem a more mythical feel. You might check out this reading by Ian McKellen (Gandalf's actor)--it's delightful. th-cam.com/video/1raSUYAr0s0/w-d-xo.html
Also of note, the poem was originally published in 1798 as The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere, so it's possible that Rime just stuck with it, but I personally think the poet went with that spelling for a reason.
If you listen to or read the poem, let me know what you think. Water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink!
The ancient mariner is an historic poem which the song is based on you don’t just get great music but a history lesson as well 🔥🔥🇬🇧
I saw them perform Rime live in that same tour (2008). It's by far the best live song I've ever seen.
Shame they don't play it more often.
One of the greatest songs ever recorded. To this day I get goosebumps coming out of the slow part through the solos.
You can't beat Maiden, live or studio, they are amazing. How many other bands are still pumping it hard after more than 40 yrs. Up the Irons!!!

JUDAS PRIEST!!!! Maiden is fuckin awesome, but Priest has out done Maiden on many occasions.
This tour had one of the best stage shows I'd ever seen
This version is actually one of the best performances of any song that Maiden has done too!
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner isn't a song you listen to, it's an epic adventure you go on.
Maiden is awesome live. They had little press in America however Europe is different man.
Not just Europe - they are loved in South America, and Asia! They even went to India twice, where I'm from, and the crowds went absolutely fuckin' CRAZY at the concert!
IRON MAIDEN is a live band... You always get the best experience live.. I have seen Maiden 17 times live they always deliver.
My 1st metal album. 38? Years later and this song still gives me the shivers. Incredible.
Nothing beats being a teenager getting a new Iron Maiden album, putting it on blast and giving it a first listen
Guys after a long time Iron Maiden is on tour.....and you should catch em because at this age you never know if it's their last
Ryan, Maiden took me a little while as well.
Up the irons troopers

guy on the right saying he's not interested in the lyrics is missing 50% of the point..someone give them the poem..and then a lyric sheet 🙄
I was at this show. When it broke out and the fireworks went off in time with the music, it was awesome

THAT BAND!
Ha! Better than the 80's? So try to play something from the second album, if you are a musician!
I definitely respect y'all. You are so open to listen to anything and give everything a listen with open minds.
I got that album as a Christmas present from my brother when it came out, and played it to death. A true classic live album.
Iron Maiden is a force live! I was at this show in NJ and this is my favorite song to see them perform live. Maiden are accomplished musicians!
What I enjoy most about your reactions is that even if you don't particularly like the song you can appreciate why others would. It embodies the "free thinker" point of view.
It’s funny you mention don’t like the galloping. It’s exactly the galloping that makes Iron Maiden so good among the metal fans.
When a band has 3 killer guitar players and they're All standing by each other in the middle of the stage trading off solos, they are not messing around.
Two killer guitar players, the other isn't really needed.

Their lead singer (Bruce Dickinson) recently recovered from throat cancer, and the live footage I've seen post-treatment sounds even better than before.
I said the same thing , his voice sounds even stronger after having cancer , he's an incredible singer!
@@walrustargaryen7794 Nobody ''beats'' cancer, it's a process you go through like any other disease.
@@walrustargaryen7794 Yup , he's the man!
@@richjnev70 thanks, you're about to be in the cover of the "That's not even the point" magazine. Congratulations.
Am I the sole individual who recognizes and appreciates the drummer's remarkable effort and exceptional technique? The drummer's talent is truly awe-inspiring, yet it seems that no one acknowledge or evaluate his skills.
Guys , listen to fear of the dark , dance of the death , and wasted years , from Iron maiden . Then you can say if u like this band or not.
Iron Maiden with worldwide fans still to this day of all types. Music with subjects of history, wars and literature . Music with a journey of tempo changes and virtuoso skilled musicians. Up The Irons!
I love the whole Powerslave album. This song is one of my favorites!
Good on you guys for picking this song! WOW! I was at this show for the Powerslave tour and it was SICK. A. F.!
Love your no bullshit reactions. Great job fellas. Don't forget Mars Volta.
Got my tix to see them live (for the 6th time) this Sept. Can't wait!!!
UP THE IRONS!!!
