Huge Maiden fan here. Love to see you doing them. I’ve seen Maiden 11 times since my first in 1987. Always a great show. There are two sections of this song that directly quote the poem. The lines “ay after day, day after day, we stuck, no breath nor motion As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean Water, water everywhere and all the boards did shrink Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink” and the “lull” section, “One after one by the star dogged moon Too quick for groan or sigh Each turned his face with a ghastly pang And cursed me with his eye Four times 50 living men (And I heard nor sigh nor groan) With heavy thump, a lifeless lump They dropped down, one by one.”
I always love how Nikko places his ride almost vertically, so when he rides the bell it projects through everything so clear. Especially during solos. 🤘🧙♂️🤘
Did you know that Nicko had a stroke earlier this year, paralysed on the right hand side and still managed to get through physio and play an entire European tour. I saw them on that tour and even though he was not 100% he was still better than most drummers
I was at this show in East Rutherford. Maiden is extremely consistent live but they were ON FIRE that night. This performance of Rime is absolutely astounding.
I’ve been to 4 Maiden concerts. First in 82, last in 2019. They’re amazing. Killer live band. The lyrics of this song are based on Coleridge’s poem. It’s a long poem, but very much worth reading. Interesting to note that Coleridge also inspired Rush’s Xanadu.
I've been to 3. First time was all for them, second because Dream Theater opened for them and I worked security for the third. Great show every time! All back in the late 2000s
And Coleridge admitted to "being under the influence of cannabis" when he wrote it. Dude was ahead of his time! What kills me about this song is that Steve Harris said that, comparative to other things he has written, this didn't take all that long to write. It seems like it's often that way: songs and albums that come in a flash of inspiration end up being all-time classics.
Seen them 10 times. I can't get enough of their music. I'm in the top 0.5% of listeners on Spotify every year lol. There's nothing li,e it. When you take the time to listen and appreciate the depth, the layers, the subject matter, how tight they are as a group, the energy and the drive of their music, it's a beautiful thing.
I’ve seen them 5 times live, never disappoint. What I find amazing, even back in 2000 when I first saw them live, was the total mix of generations. Even on their latest tours they’re still bringing in young fans.
Elizabeth actually did a reaction of this song from a concert 22 years earlier. Mostly the same lineup - the one you've been watching has one additional guitarist.
They sound so good on this tour! I saw them both nights at London O2, they crushed it both nights. For their ages, to still do back to back nights is impressive, but to do it at as good a level as they have possibly ever been at, they are the greatest. I mean, this is the band that nearly 40 years ago almost upstaged QUEEN! I always wonder what would have been if Maiden hadn’t pushed Queen to play even better at the start of 1985… would Queen have gone on to perform “the greatest 20 minutes in music history” at Live Aid? Proud to call both bands my hometown (London) heroes.
And to think they're pushing on towards their 70's (Nicko is 71) and they're still killing it, they are going to tour again next year so keep a look out for dates as it might be the last time you'll get a chance to see them. I've seen them twice live and they just smashed it, so good live. 👍🏻
Even on the video, you can almost feel the entire arena shaking from the 12:50 point! Greatest there's ever been, in my humble opinion. If you are seeing them later this year in Auckland, I absolutely promise you that you won't regret it, they're as good now as they've ever been!!
Big fan and glad to see Nico getting some recognition. Seen Maiden twice in NZ (Chch), and once in London. The London gig was interesting - was a warm-up gig for the Brave New World tour back in 99-00 (can't quite remember?) at the Sheppards Bush Empire - which only holds a couple of thousand. No stage show, just a few lights, and a wall of Marshalls (think: Spinal Tap set to 12). Was like going to the pub to watch Iron Maiden. Fantastic night. The world is a better place with Maiden in it...
I've seen Maiden a few times, They brought this tour to my city on my wifes birthday so we went and my wife instantly became a Maiden fan. She's not a metal fan at all, she was a theater kid and young adult theater singer, but she loved Maiden the theatrics, the musicality, the story telling. She said Maiden live is like seeing a stage show, just louder. She's right. But this tour was epic everyone was in top shape like always. Maiden never disappoints.
Barefoot and a single pedal, awesome!!! His custom made and painted Sonor's and Paiste's are gorgeous!!! Highly recommend his gear walk through videos.
Went to the World Slavery tour when i was a lad... it was unexpected, and well mind blowing. it was truly a theatrical production, I also happen to be a fan of the original poet, the song contains a couple of stanza from the poem "water water everywhere and all the boards did shrink, water water everywhere not a drop to drink' and the spoken word during the 'lull' basically the song is just a deferent telling of the story, like there versions of Murder in the Rue Morgue, Flight of Icarus, The Trooper, Phantom of the Opera , etc. The bassist - S. Harris - is extremely well versed in literature and history - Run to the Hills is one of the best songs about the horrors the US military laid on the first nation, Aces High - battle of Britton, again the Trooper , Ghegis Khan, one of the best and most influential bands to come out of the 70s, I am glad that you are looking into them. they have a lot to offer,. If you really want to get a feel for the band itself - Wasted Years (the actual video) as it has a ton of :me and the boys: footage - off stage , being english and you see how much of a family those guys are.
“Clean double kicks”… those are single kicks. Nicko doesn’t use a double pedal 🦶 Yeah, the Flight 666 stuff is a really good representation of what their shows are like. Saw them on that tour when they were in New Zealand… Bruce introduced this song by botching about boy racers in Christchurch making too much noise & not letting him get to sleep 😅
Iron maiden concerts are amazing. You really feel like it's a 'show' The band always look like they love performing Yes it's as fun as it looks being there.
First Maiden show I ever went to was with my dad when I was 3 years old. Fear of the Dark tour. Seen them 7 times since then, unbelievable concerts. Would highly recommend to anyone who’s a fan of music 🤘🏼not just metal fans.
Such amazing *single* pedal footwork!!! The size of that kit though! 😆 Seen them 3 times in NZ, the last tour was canceled due to Covid border closure.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums ...YEAAAHHH... Nicko was a FANTASTIC rock'n roll player before metal.... TRY "ROCK'N ROLL SUZY" from Pat Travers and hear his crazy good groove..... mama......
Actually, he doesn't use a double kick; it's all single pedal foot work! As for drums, he uses Sonor and Paiste Cymbals (especially, their ColorSound cymbals. If you watch the 1984 version of this song, Nicko's cymbals look like they are coloured with crayons!).
Nicko switched from Sonor to Premier in 1993. He played Premier drums until 2014. The production of Premier's high-end stuff had been moved to Taiwan in 2013 (at that point, their lower lines had been made in the Far East for years) so Nicko switched back to Sonor. Then after a few years with Sonor, he switched to British Drum Company.
If you go to a Maiden concert and you don't get home exhausted and lose your voice, then you're not a Maiden fan or you went to the wrong concert. Iron Maiden are an experience not just a concert. They set the standard for concerts and all bands can learn from them in how to give a performance.
I attended the Power slave tour in 1985. It was one of the best shows I have gone to. 100,000 Watts of power, the crowd is wild we're all just headbanging, singing every lyric. It took me about 20 mins to recover before I could drive home.
Seen these guys 26 times since the 80's, and they blew my head off every time. The first and the last time left the deepest scratches on my bones. Oh - i forgot: 1999, just when sir Dickinson was back, just before 'Brave New World', added som serious scratches too.
Kia ora Andrew, fellow kiwi here, drummer and IM lifer - my first band at high school in AKL in the late 80's we played Iron Maiden covers ... and we spent an inordinate number of hours, days and weeks just on RotAM and getting every piece right ... I'm sure hoping we did it justice and every time I listen to it it brings back great memories of every nuance that Nicko put into this performance. Have been to their NZ shows in Auckland, ASB Showgrounds was one, and a couple others at Mt Smart (from memory)😁 Nicko's single kick drum and playing barefoot makes him one of the all time greats! Up the Irons!
Iron Maiden gathered a big following here in Sweden early in the eighties so the band included lot of tours/trips that has given us swedes, a lot of fantastic gigs from then to now. I've been to a nr of them the first in 88, and the latest just a few years ago. Maiden live outside at Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg, warm summer-nights is awesome!😊
Been a Maiden fan for 35 years. Have always felt Nicko rarely gets mentioned in the “greatest drummers” conversation. The man makes the drums sing like few other players.
I used to play with shoes. But a couple of years ago I tried to play barefoot due to a sore knee. And now there’s no going back. For the same reason that I would never play with gloves. I want to be naturally connected to my instrument 🤩 And a short “Funky Feet” demo ⬇️🦶🏻 th-cam.com/video/sN2dORgvR9A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ON0lZSrICSBpac_n
Listen to it again with the knowledge that Nicko plays it all with just his right foot on the kick drum. He always played single pedal. Also yeah, I play barefoot at home. I think I played in my socks back when I played live.
Saw them on this tour in Christchurch when I was 16. Hands down the best gig I've ever been to. Getting shivers just watching this video. Not hard to see why they won best british live band that year.
No double kick except for the Song " Face in the Sand " . Double Kick with a Single pedal like double stroke . Barefoot player after the 90's . He is famous for the Heal and Toe technic Ciao !
Seen Maiden five times. Easily the greatest live show of any band. Saw them in Sao Paulo in 04 with over 90,000 fans who knew every word to every song. Amazing
This is so unbelievably good! In the late 90s my mother gifted me a cassette. It contained Powerslave copied to it from the LP. Unfortunately the last part of Rime didn't fit on it and I spent years trying to find a copy with the complete song. In 1998 they re-released their early albums on CD and I finally got to hear the final solo in its complete form. Iron Maiden is definitely the best band I've seen live ever. Andrew, I would love it if you could take a look at the British band Wishbone Ash. They were pioneers in dual lead guitar playing and inspired many great bands, including Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Metallica, Dream Theater and many more. They have sort of a medieval or folky feel to their music, while being quite jazzy and hard rocking at the same time with solos from all the instruments etc.
Not to be pedantic, but he did use a double bass pedal for one song (Face In The Sand) off the album Dance of Death from 2003. From what I remember from interviews at the time, he didn't really enjoy using it.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums hehe i know people who have seen them over a 100 times. Many follow them around the world on tour, some see them 15-20 shows a tour. Im glad i can do 2-3 some years.
Loved this review. Love Iron Maiden, only seen them 5 times since '91 but incredible each time. Last time I saw them was earlier this year at London O2, where I actually caught Nicko's drum skin (we have a vlog from that concert including footage of me actually catching the skin). As someone else said in the comments below, Nicko had a stroke recently and by his own admission was only about 70% match fit at the start of the tour....he was still incredible!!!! Up the Irons, new sub here. Cheers
The branch of metal you refer to is New Wave of British Heavy Metal, bands like Maiden, Saxon, Motorhead are NWBHM, and yes Maider were EPIC live, got to see them on the Somewhere Back in Time tour in Christchurch in 2009, in terms of stage shows, the only other one that would be a production like that would have been Alice Cooper
Been a few times to concerts - worth it. First time I wasn't a fan before, not even some years after... but something happened and then I got it. Play their songs on guitar now.. great fun.
I was 15 years old at Birmingham NEC, front middle, standing & remember feeling nervous about the crowd behind until the band came on. They ran straight at us & got in our faces, I was so pleased I knew the words 😆😆 I’ve never forgotten the experience, Steve was scary as fxxk, possibly the best gig I’ve ever witnessed. I’m almost 50 now, it’s a long time ago but the aggression is still fresh in my mind, what a band!
Best thing in mysic history. The long break and thr scream from hell and then boom crazy solo. Goosebumps every single time even after 2p years of loving that song!!!
I saw them once, my senior year of high school. Guns & Roses backed out as the opening act, so Megadeth took the spot. 😉 Phenomenal concert! 🤟🏻 Many people don’t realize this, but Nicko, Bruce and Dave (of Megadeth) are strong Christians.
I've seen Maiden several times, starting back in the early 80's. They ALWAYS put on a great show. What's more, they themselves are having fun on stage, you can see it in their eyes, and the way they interact with each other on stage. Watching them is like watching a bunch of kids who are best friends goofing around, but they happen to be excellent musicians. Nicko is a beast on drums, he can do things with his right foot that other drummers would need a second pedal for.
Saw the irons in taunton somerset uk, 1982. They were fantastic then and they have improved every year since. All the band members now are doing what they love, look at thier faces while playing, they couldnt have enjoyed work any more! Fantastic band and a great bunch of 'lads' that produce theatrical shows with brilliant songs and music. I've not been able to see them live since then but I have watched many concerts over a over and usually with headphones on and volume at 11ish! Oh and Nico recently had a stroke but is now well on the way to 100%. That is dedication,my wife had a stroke and the work involved in just doing normal day to day things is huge, imagine getting back behind a kit as the time keeper as well, the best! Up the irons!
In high school my buddy got kicked out of his house for going to an Iron Maiden show. (I went to see them too.) It was his favorite band and he had to see them. Good times! Btw this was over 30 years ago and yes, still love them today. As you can see by the video, they are the real deal.
Maiden , can't say enough about them , has been my favorite band since 1981 , I was 10 years old when I listened to my brothers Maiden albums and ever since then they been my favorite.
And I'm going to my 16th Maiden concert this coming October, My first maiden concert was somewhere in time and the redoing that tour this year 2024. Can't wait
Although I always preferred Clive Burr over Nicko, I must say that this is one of the few songs where Nicko left his personal mark. I want to say that Iron Maiden is the greatest Metal band of all time even though they have a drummer who is not as good in compositional terms as people believe (being more technical is not synonymous with being better). That is a huge merit in IM and is one of the reasons that make it my favorite band.
Big Iron Maiden fan. I was 11 years old when I first listen to the first album. My first concert was in 1993, and I've seen them live 7 other times since then. It's always great, always fun. You see 3 or 4 generations watching the show together. It's just awesome. Cheers!
I saw and -most important- heard this song live at Valle Hovin in Oslo in 2008, this is the best thing i have experienced with my clothes on. What a show. Maiden has also teached and educated me more about historical events and battles more than any teacher can do. The "Empire of the clouds" about the accident with the R-101 airship, i would never know about this if it wasn't for Maiden. When I heard Bruce sing for the first time "She's the biggest vessel built by men, a giant of the skies, for all you unbeleivers, the Titanic fits inside" it just gave me freezing chills down my back.
I saw that tour in Phoenix. We were on the floor when Hallowed Be Thy Name started. I turned to my buddy and said " we need to move back." It was a good call.
If you get the chance you have to see them. They are on a short list of all time greats in the genre. I’m real happy to have seen both them and AC/DC. I’ve seen them five times live, been a fan since the 80s. But if I say “I’ve seen them five times” to the biggest fans, their reply will be “only five times this tour?”. (Saw them live the first time in the early 90s, and the most recent last time they hit town. You can see that they are older, but 90% of Maiden is more than you’ll get of most bands.)
I would suggest you think about traveling to see them live! They are that good! The feeling of being in that crowd! Oh my! Having witnessed it a few times I can tell you it is not a concert is an out of body experience! They just make you happy!
Nicko is actually one of the few single kick players left. A dying breed indeed.

🤘🧙♂️🤘
Did you know that Nicko had a stroke earlier this year, paralysed on the right hand side and still managed to get through physio and play an entire European tour. I saw them on that tour and even though he was not 100% he was still better than most drummers
By his own admission he said he was probably about 70%, but his 70% is better than many’s 100%
Didnt know
I was at this show in East Rutherford. Maiden is extremely consistent live but they were ON FIRE that night. This performance of Rime is absolutely astounding.
i have seen this song live 3 times
also, Nico plays with one kick only, his triplets are masterfull
That's impressive
Iron is one of the best concerts that you can watch...perfect sounding and amazing experience...
notices and mentions the berfoot playing, not mentioning that hes doing fast triplets on a single kick :)
one of my favorite Maiden songs and it is so good live! Nicko still kills it at 71 years old! The single kicks are phenomenal:)
What is an Iron Maiden gig like?
For example you stand in the crowd and feel LOVE waves coming from the stage and going towards the stage.
Goosebumps
@@johnr.8275 I think it was actually laudanum, an opium derivative. But yes, very ahead of his time.
@@markmilner842 Oops, brain fart.....I knew it was something!
@@johnr.8275 my English degree is finally proving useful. 😂
Because it's such an experience. And just good old fashioned band values
Elizabeth actually did a reaction of this song from a concert 22 years earlier. Mostly the same lineup - the one you've been watching has one additional guitarist.
One completely unnecessary guitarist
Saw them at Wacken Open Air last month. They're still killing it 🤘🏼!
That's amazing
And to think they're pushing on towards their 70's (Nicko is 71) and they're still killing it, they are going to tour again next year so keep a look out for dates as it might be the last time you'll get a chance to see them. I've seen them twice live and they just smashed it, so good live. 👍🏻
Iron Maiden concerts are even more fun than they look. Definitely go if you get a chance!
I WILL
One thing you absolutely have to know about Nicko McBrain is that he doesn't use double kicks.
(And I don't mean that as a dis or anything. But keep that in mind when you listen to the next Maiden song!)
WHAT!?!?
Not entirely true…on one song he used it…on the Dance of Death album (one of the last songs on the album
@@joe666byes but only in studio,Nicko has never used double kick in a live set
When you said "this is so theatrical" you nailed it.
Great drummer. Great song. Great band.
NAILED IT
Barefoot and a single pedal, awesome!!! His custom made and painted Sonor's and Paiste's are gorgeous!!! Highly recommend his gear walk through videos.
Ive seen them live 13 times and its always amazing... They are going to Auckland next year!! Don't miss it!!!!
Went to the World Slavery tour when i was a lad... it was unexpected, and well mind blowing. it was truly a theatrical production, I also happen to be a fan of the original poet, the song contains a couple of stanza from the poem "water water everywhere and all the boards did shrink, water water everywhere not a drop to drink' and the spoken word during the 'lull'
basically the song is just a deferent telling of the story, like there versions of Murder in the Rue Morgue, Flight of Icarus, The Trooper, Phantom of the Opera , etc. The bassist - S. Harris - is extremely well versed in literature and history - Run to the Hills is one of the best songs about the horrors the US military laid on the first nation, Aces High - battle of Britton, again the Trooper , Ghegis Khan,
one of the best and most influential bands to come out of the 70s, I am glad that you are looking into them. they have a lot to offer,.
If you really want to get a feel for the band itself - Wasted Years (the actual video) as it has a ton of :me and the boys: footage - off stage , being english and you see how much of a family those guys are.
Thanks for covering IM. Would have liked to heard more commentary about Nicko’s style of drumming. Also he is in his 70’s. Unreal.
The lull is directly from the poem. The lyrics are from the poem as well, that Steve Harris adapted for a metal song.
Got it!
“Clean double kicks”… those are single kicks. Nicko doesn’t use a double pedal 🦶
Yeah, the Flight 666 stuff is a really good representation of what their shows are like. Saw them on that tour when they were in New Zealand… Bruce introduced this song by botching about boy racers in Christchurch making too much noise & not letting him get to sleep 😅
Live After Death has to be the most epic live album (4 records) ever created. Thanks for the memories!
Iron maiden concerts are amazing. You really feel like it's a 'show'
The band always look like they love performing
Yes it's as fun as it looks being there.
Such a brilliant band! One of the few that sounds better live than in the studio! And Nicko.... Such a character!
Yeah they are on point live 💯👌
"Where eagles dare" - Iron Maiden. It was Nicko McBrain's debut with Iron Maiden and the drum section is unbelievable.
First Maiden show I ever went to was with my dad when I was 3 years old. Fear of the Dark tour. Seen them 7 times since then, unbelievable concerts. Would highly recommend to anyone who’s a fan of music 🤘🏼not just metal fans.
Fans of music. YES! You nailed it
Definitely one of the Top 10 most epic songs of all time.
Such amazing *single* pedal footwork!!! The size of that kit though! 😆
Seen them 3 times in NZ, the last tour was canceled due to Covid border closure.
I first heard Nicko on Pat Travers-Putting It Straight (1977). Hooked!!! And what a snare sound on "Life In London"!!
I have so much to check out!
Nicko actually left Sonor a few tours ago and is now using British Drum Company drums
About time you did maiden I've seen them 10 times. Single foot pedal Nicko is bad ass
Have been to their NZ shows in Auckland, ASB Showgrounds was one, and a couple others at Mt Smart (from memory)😁
Nicko's single kick drum and playing barefoot makes him one of the all time greats!
Up the Irons!
Great to hear from ya Brett!
I want to be naturally connected to my instrument 🤩
And a short “Funky Feet” demo ⬇️🦶🏻
th-cam.com/video/sN2dORgvR9A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ON0lZSrICSBpac_n
Listen to it again with the knowledge that Nicko plays it all with just his right foot on the kick drum. He always played single pedal.
Also yeah, I play barefoot at home. I think I played in my socks back when I played live.
Great song and DVD. I was in the crowd for this recording.
Oh wow!
He is famous for the Heal and Toe technic
Ciao !
WHAT!?!?!?
Seen Maiden five times. Easily the greatest live show of any band. Saw them in Sao Paulo in 04 with over 90,000 fans who knew every word to every song. Amazing
I bet it's quite the live experience
Iron Maiden is the best concert I have ever been to by a far margin.
Sept 20th 2019 Dallas Texas.
One of my favourite songs they've never played live ( as I know of) is Alexander the great, you should give it a listen, awesome guitar solos!
Great review, Nicko has always played a single pedal. No double kick drums/pedals; if that’s what you meant?
Nicko mcbrain's right foot 🫡
@@mattigator600 playing along to Nicko when I started playing drums 35 years ago got my right foot working!! 😅
Not to be pedantic, but he did use a double bass pedal for one song (Face In The Sand) off the album Dance of Death from 2003. From what I remember from interviews at the time, he didn't really enjoy using it.
Just seen them non stop for the last 10 years with every tour. STILL the best!! Go see them before it’s too late 🙏Up The Irons🖤
18 times live for me, the best band ever no one comes close imo.
WOW!!!
Play their songs on guitar now.. great fun.
Old school but classic....love it to bits!!
Maiden is one of my absolute favourites. Between first and latest concert it's 40 years ❤
I was 15 years old at Birmingham NEC, front middle, standing & remember feeling nervous about the crowd behind until the band came on.
They ran straight at us & got in our faces, I was so pleased I knew the words 😆😆
I’ve never forgotten the experience, Steve was scary as fxxk, possibly the best gig I’ve ever witnessed.
I’m almost 50 now, it’s a long time ago but the aggression is still fresh in my mind, what a band!
AWESOME
Best thing in mysic history. The long break and thr scream from hell and then boom crazy solo. Goosebumps every single time even after 2p years of loving that song!!!
I saw them once, my senior year of high school. Guns & Roses backed out as the opening act, so Megadeth took the spot. 😉
Phenomenal concert! 🤟🏻
Many people don’t realize this, but Nicko, Bruce and Dave (of Megadeth) are strong Christians.
Powerslave tour was my first concert in 1985 when I was 12 and it is still my favorite show. Saw them 3 times after that.
This is easily one of the best of all time
INCREDIBLE
The Iron Maiden concert is like no other. Absolutely amazing. Been my favorite band since 1981.
In high school my buddy got kicked out of his house for going to an Iron Maiden show. (I went to see them too.)
It was his favorite band and he had to see them. Good times!
Btw this was over 30 years ago and yes, still love them today. As you can see by the video, they are the real deal.
I love surfing for random nicko sightings.
🙌
Maiden , can't say enough about them , has been my favorite band since 1981 , I was 10 years old when I listened to my brothers Maiden albums and ever since then they been my favorite.
And I'm going to my 16th Maiden concert this coming October, My first maiden concert was somewhere in time and the redoing that tour this year 2024. Can't wait
16! 🤯
I saw Maiden with Dream Theater about 15 years ago at the old PNE Coliseum in Vancouver. Great show. They didn't play Run to the Hills though.
I saw that tour in Phoenix. We were on the floor when Hallowed Be Thy Name started. I turned to my buddy and said " we need to move back." It was a good call.
@@markmm1066 Hallowed was not on the original setlist on my stop but they put it in their encore
Nicko is like a favorite grandfather now! Maiden are so good to see live
Still drumming now after having a stroke not long ago, and by his own words still not 100% yet.
Was brilliant when I saw them a few months back
I hope to see them live
I would suggest you think about traveling to see them live! They are that good! The feeling of being in that crowd! Oh my! Having witnessed it a few times I can tell you it is not a concert is an out of body experience! They just make you happy!
