Iron Maiden has been around since 1975. Dave Murray is the longest member besides Steve Harris. Bruce Dickinson started in 1982 after their other singer left the band. Other drummer, Clive Burr left the band in 1983, and current drummer, Nicko McBrain stepped in as the drummer. Adrian Smith came in about the same time. Then he left the band. New guy, Janick Gers replaced him. Then Adrian came back to the band. Instead releasing Janick, they kept him. He, Adrian and Dave are known by the fans as "Three Amigos". They share leads on each song.

They have touched so many people, been so successful and influential with very little radio airplay and almost no mainstream media support for the majority of their career. Glad to let you know that although there were a lot of lineup changes in the first few years of the band, the band you see in this performance is the classic lineup that was finalized in 1982. The lead singer (Bruce Dickinson left the band for several years, and so did the guitarist wearing the bandana (Adrian Smith), but both returned to the band in 1999 and the lineup has been the same since then. Also, the guitarist that likes to dance around (Janick Gers) who had replaced Smith when he left was not kicked out when Smith returned - instead they kept him on so they could play 3 part guitar arrangements and sound even closer to the album sound during live performances.

That bit you were trying to remember is just after the pilot, his son and the hermit have hauled the mariner into their boat. They think he's dead, but :
I moved my lips ; the pilot shrieked and fell down in a fit.
The holy hermit raised his eyes, and prayed where he did sit.
I took the oars. The pilot's boy, who now doth crazy go,
Laughed loud and long, and all the while his eyes went to and fro.
"Ha, ha," quoth he, "Full plain I see - the Devil knows how to row!"

Not only do they put on these incredible, bombastic shows, Bruce Dickinson (singer) goes through a ton of costume changes for the songs, the set constantly changes and they keep that energy going for hours. The bassist, Steve Harris and guitarist Dave Murray are the last remaining original members that have been on EVERY RECORDING. Steve is also the primary songwriter and all of their songs are based on literature and mythology. They originally had 2 guitarists and a bassist but added the 3rd guitarist during some personnel shifts in the 90s.
Oh and Bruce, the singer, also flies the bands personal commercial jet during the tours. 🙂

Showing my age just a bit but i got to see them for the World Slavery Tour back on January 6th 1985 at the Richfield Coliseum in Ohio. It is one of the two best concerts i have ever been to (the other being Ozzy Blizzard of Ozz Tour May 11th 1981). I had front row left side of the isle and got to have dinner with them at a friends house because her dad was the regional director for Capitol/EMI records at the time. Bruce and the guys did a few impromptu acoustic songs while they were there and it was mind blowing to hear him sing in person. \m/ Rock on young ladies!!!

It's pretty much the original band from at least the '80s, plus a guitarist. This is from the "Somewhere Back in Time" tour. The singer, Bruce Dickinson, actually flew the band on a world tour (He's a Boeing trained pilot) where they played a couple of hits from every album. The 757 they used was called Ed Force One Flight 666. Look for the documentary. It's pretty cool.

Thank you so much for reacting to one of my favourite Iron Maiden songs. What made the reaction so much better was that one of you knew the story behind the song so you were both able to get some context to the performance. Iron Maiden not only have one of the greatest vocalists of all time singing and acting out the lyrics in such a theatrical way, but also have exceptional musicians that create music that add to the story, even enhance it. I’ve always thought that they are the closest thing to genuine modern opera because they are master storytellers. Please check out more. BTW, I enjoyed this so much I’ve just subscribed. Keep up the great work!

Some interesting things about their lineup:
They have 3 guitarists and a bassist. Lead guitarists from different... let's say eras, of the band had come back and just all exist in the band now. Which is awesome.
While the band is probably most recognized for Dickenson's iconic vocals, the only original member of the band still with them is Steve Harris, the bassist.
Dickenson didn't even join the band until 1981-1993 then had some time away from the band until 1999.

A truly amazing band a HUGE worldwide following. The song is based on an old poem/story. Many of their songs are related to history or tell a story. Iron Maiden are legendary for many reasons...most of which are already stated by other posters...
But I didn't see mention of the fact that their singer Bruce Dickinson is one of the greatest vocalist in all of rock/metal... along with a couple of others for sure. Not to sell the rest of the band short as they are all really really talented.
    Some other great Maiden songs would be;
    The Trooper
    Hallowed Be Thy Name
    The Clansman
    Fear of the Dark
    Aces High
    And really...MANY more.
And yes...if you had to use just 1 word to describe them live...it would be energy. Even in this video here that you did, I'm not sure the age of the other band members, but Bruce Dickinson was born in 1958, so he was 49 or 50 years old during this concert. That was 12 years ago and they are still touring today (well...would be if it wasn't for the lockdowns).
FYI...that plane you saw landing at the very beginning ... was probably being piloted by Bruce Dickinson... he is a pilot as well that flies their plane!
