Another great video! Tight and bright and to the point with all the info we need. Looking at this seriously with the beauty dish! I could have 7 or 8 of these for the price I paid for my first lightpanels mini kit!
Great review. I use the Godox s60 and am very happy for the price - this would be a great upgrade down the road. You deserve more views (for your camera and lighting stuff. The modelling career might not take off so much ;-))
Recently bought this light to go alongside with my aputure lights and got to say I’m really happy with it. The only difference between the 2 brands for me is the quality of the cabling and control unit on the Godox. Otherwise the quality of the light from it is fantastic especially when you consider the price...
Thanks Richard, and I do agree. It's a shame about the cabling (I hope Godox are listening) but the quality of the lamp head for that price made it worth putting up with for me.
This video was so well made! I liked the calmness and the great production quality. I just ordered the VL 150, which is going to be a huge upgrade over my Neewer 660 LEDs. Unfortunately the beauty wasn't available in my country, so I went with the Laofas D90B. This should be a good compromise, I hope.
@@extrashot I am amazed by the Laofas Softbox in combination with Godox VL 150. I changed the VL 150 for the UL 150 though after a week. The light is amazing and so soft!
Yup, I agree the big domes can be a pain sometimes. I might have to pick up one of those smaller jobbies. Thanks for the demo... and the humorous intro 😁
I have one of these and have been using them for interviews with the 120 soft box, but will defo give the beauty dish a crack. This light is also a weapon when using it for weddings- using the grid and barn doors I can illuminate a subject from across the room, not to mention outside with the battery! Nice review!
Thanks for this review (and the rest of your videos) Finally a cameraman who makes videos in an honest and non-commercial way. Where can I order the LAOFAS beauty dish? I've searched the internet for a while but can't find it.
Hi Brandon, all good thanks, hope you're okay too? They are a great light, hope you enjoy it... be careful with the big domes though, they are massive! Congratulations with the channel... taking off like a rocket !!!
Great video. It's been in my shopping cart for the three days now while I make up my mind. Also needed a portable softbox for indoor interviews. I think I'll get your setup seems perfect.
Thank you for the kind comment. For most single camera interview setups, I'm finding the smaller LOFAS beauty dish works the best for me. The big one is too big (although the light is lovely) !!!
I have this light and I agree that it is the best light I have owned this far. However I use a 28" deep parabolic round soft box from EZ Lock for my mobile shoots because it is lighter and easier to setup than the larger 38" deep parabolic soft box. From my understanding the deep parabolic soft boxes keep shadows at a minimum. I have access to a beauty dish soft box so I will have to make a comparison.
@@candyartstv Are you lighting both people with the one lantern? It looks really nice. The main problem is it's obviously difficult to separate people from the wall behind. I'm guessing it's a space issue. Beauty dishes might be more directional and controllable, but you'd probably need two to cover both people? I must say I like the way you're lighting the faces on your channel... looks good.
@@extrashot Thanks! I'm having to film in my flat, because I rent a space in a council building and they've banned access! I've tried to use a couple of gelled lights for backlighting and an attempt of getting some separation. Yes it's all lit with the one lantern, but thinking some height will give me enough spread to light them both, in regards to the beauty dish.
I think my flexible LEDs would still be first choice if I needed to travel light... (when and if those days ever return !!!). The convenience of packing a couple of mats with all the bits and boxes into one small Peli is still attractive. But there's no arguing with the quality of light you can get from these COBs. Maybe smaller versions would be a travel solution? I see there's a few 60 watt battery styles coming out now - like the ML60?
Thank you very much for the excellent video. I just bought myself a Godox SL 150II for the convinience of just one powerplug. However it doesnot come with a bag, too bad. I also think the Laofas with the beauty disc has the most beautiful wrapping light. But is it as collapsible (with inner diffusion and grid) as the deep parabolic one? Thanks and keep up the good thing!
I did agonise over the SL150 vs VL150... they are both great lights. The beauty dish is just as easy to collapse and put back in the bag without de-rigging. The inner diffuser, outer diffuser, grid and even the hard reflector can be left rigged and it still squeezes into the smaller bag.
Mine worked well until the assistant plugged the power cable directly into the head (minus the controller) blowing the cooling circuit. Yes, it's possible due to the connectors being identical... a slight flaw in the design there!
It was just a size thing... the UL150 is quite large/heavy with a big heatsink and I wanted a travel kit with a couple of lights. I've found the VL fan doesn't even come on if I'm running less than about 40% brightness. If you are really concerned about fan noise then I think the new SL150m2 has a fan off mode... which isn't as bright but also zero fan noise!
Not quite but it would help. The 150Wh just means it has the capacity of 150watts for 1 hour. I've been using a 98Wh V-Lock successfully, but it just means it won't last so long. The important battery specification is the maximum discharge current in amps. Mine are 14.4v at 6.4A which is only just enough... but remember, these figures are only for pumping out 100% brightness continuously, which I rarely do. The beefier battery you've got, the longer it'll last and less strain you'll put on it long term! (from my experience, draining the V-locks too quickly reduces the life expectancy quite a bit)
Just got the cheaper Godox 200SW - its pretty noisy but works really well with the godox octobox (about 30 in) defo very good lumens per ££ the 'naked with reflector' setup is a bit janky compared to a fresnel.. but 1/5 the price!
In love with your talking style. So sober and full of livelyness.
Thanks Ricky... v.kind!
I bought this light based solely on this review. Thank you.
I hope you like it... I'm feeling the pressure now!
I like the way you have tongue-in-cheek lit this video like a 1985 ENG news segment.
Hey... I was doing ENG news in 1985... that's probably why !!! 😂
The Laofas beauty dish is incredible. Thanks for the tip

The big dome keeps getting in shot! I can never put it where I want it. Big fan of the collapsable beauty dish.
Great review, I've just bought my first vl150 after watching this!
How is it?... I'm still loving mine and use it on most shoots.

@@extrashot I haven't tried the beauty dish yet. I have a shoot today, hopefully I can try it today. Shooting an episode for a show later.
I've been looking at the Godox range, and always wanted a beauty dish.
I think the beauty dish is the best compromise to make the whole thing usable when you're not in a studio!

Is it good for portrait photography or use a flash instead ?
Depends if you want to use constant lighting or not? I don't know much about flash photography so not really qualified to say... sorry.
