It is edible, unlike the outer coating on babybels.
I work with them, even though outer layer can be eat, we always cut it off. Very hard and not really tasty either. They get dirty too.

As AvoidingCape said, it happened a few years ago. Some chefs (like Massimo Bottura of Osteria Francescana in Modena) banded together to utilize all the rice and cheese wheels affected by the earthquake. It helped sell the damaged cheese and, as a result, helped the producers. It was quite ingenious.

First of all you can use parmesan chees everywhere while coocking and mozzarella no, second, parmesan is so good on its own that you can't compare with mozzarella and third now a day mozzarella production is so industrialized that you can't no more trust it for quality and origins of its milk while parmesan is always certified
REVOLUTIONS51 yeah but what food fit with parmesan ? I live in indonesia and people here mostly use mozarella for pizza and rarely use parmesan for food.
playernumber14 ok, mozzarella is the one to go for pizza yes, but parmesan is to be used on every pasta sauce (and in italy this include half of your meal ahah) , in lasagne, to be eaten on its own , with baksamic vinegar or with pears, it is used sometimes in sandwitches, inside sone type of stuffed pasta like tortellini
