My dads been wanting to get into fishing and trolling, but actually be good. and we just moved to colorado and a lake is right next to us, and tomorrow is his bday so imma help him out. our Walmart has all of these so i appreciate it man!
i WATCH THIS ON AND OFF ALLL THE TIME, I JUST IN JOY IT SOME MUCH, AND I DONT TO ANY ICE FISH, SO IM WAITING FOR APRIL TO GET HERE, AND YOUR VIDEO ARE SO LIGHT AND CLEAR. THANKS AGAIN. IM IN Southern Utah.
Thank you for this video. We recently got a deck boat and just got it out of the shop. I grew up less than 30 minutes from the Columbia and never really fished it. That is something that I plan on fixing immediately. Haha.
Love, love, love seeing the details on the set up rigs.. many 'how to' videos skim over these important first steps and go right to fishing them. Thanks
Love these sit on top pedal kayaks. I have a Porta-Bote, which I also love, but I'm tempted on these kayaks because I love the idea of getting great leg exercise while fishing!
I just placed an order for some of the lures that you had on the video. I used your links! I also have some salmon defrosting right now, that I’m going to try your brine and smoke them. Keep up the videos!
My favorites include an f4 frog flatfish, super duper, needlefish spoon and a uv kokanee hootchie in blue or pink. I always put scent on my lures. Great video as always!
I've thrown Super Dupers for 50 years. I don't think I have caught more than 5 fish on them. F4 frogs and yellow with orange spots flatfish, tons but, my most productive has always been re and white Mepps and smaller red and white Daredevils in nickle color. But, that's always been casting off the bank. Next summer - trolling behind the kayak.
Trolling flies like the Pistol Pete and Woolly Bugger are extremely effective not only because they work, but that they are so versatile in how you can present them. Adding them behind a dodger is also a killer combo as well. I've always been a fan of the trout sized Flatfish and Kwikfish due to the fact that the trout seem to really commit when they hit them (an added bonus if the fishing is slow and every bite you get needs to count).
Milt I really like your video's I live live in north eastern Utah in the mountains we have a lot of small and large lakes. I just purchased a Pelican Catch PWR 100 Kayak Finally got it rigged up so I can troll. I have already caught trout with the Kastmasters always do. I have flat fish I haven't used for years they will be in my tackle for my next trip. Thanks for the tip on the Pistol Pete's I have only used them for fly and bubble fishing. Keep up the good work. Can't wait for your ice fishing video"s.
Might be my favorite way to fish is trolling, but in a boat , not a canoe. In a canoe, all the action is behind your back . Its a awkward twisting position to be in once hook up takes place . Plus if they become airborne you miss seeing it . And that's always exciting . Good video tho . Thank you .
One of my favorite lures for Great Lakes salmon and steelhead is the F-7 silver plated Flatfish with hot orange or pink dots which I apply myself. I use these specifically in rivers and seldom troll them because my boat can't troll down as slow as your kayak. They really do need to be troll slaowly to work properly. I do have a few F-4s, 5s and 6s though.
Dude those pistol Pete’s are deadly! And just like you said somehow extremely hard to find. You can catch anything from bass to salmon with those. Rivers to trolling. Truly a underrated lure.
Luhr Jensen needlefish in Fire tiger or metallic perch gets absolutely hammered. Pistol Pete’s are great. Caught a few flat lined on Pete’s while I was out paddle boarding with the wife even. Always have some wedding rings in the tackle box as well.
Ssshhh!!!! Before you know it, people will start finding out about triple teasers and super duper’s as well. Needlefish with a little piece of worm is deadly on some lakes.
You used 3 of my favorite lures. 1) weightless spinner ( I mostly use wedding ring) 2) Flatfish (I like yellow with red spots) 3) Kastmaster (silver). These have caught a lot of trout for me. I recently bought some Pistol Pete flies which I intend to try out in the next week or so using a fly and bubble setup. I also have caught a lot of trout trolling a Rapala original floater (usually silver) which has also caught me a lot of bass and some walleye. Years ago, when I was a kid, I used a Triple Teaser a lot which is quite good when trolled for trout. Incidentally Dick Nite spoons are around $10 for a 1/100 oz. piece of very thin metal a little smaller than a dime. Danielson makes the same lure called a Dandy Mite for $1.69. Just sayin, why pay $10.
I thought the 1/4 oz gold thomas buoyant was my secret, I've been using it for 40 years starting as a kid in western oregon creeks and rivers, I've used all the others, except for the prop flies, you might find those flies trolled slow with out the prop spinner might become your favorite though!... Not that I'm not going to get some and try them. Also try old school Indiana spinner the little two tandem blade with a bit of worm behind it when you use bait. I am betting you know that, you are around my age and I'll bet you have an old one in your box. All of it is better than gang trolls, to get the fun out of spunky trout. Thanks for your video's, you make me wonder sometimes whether I should sell my big boat's!
Great video! I haven't used many flatfish but apparently they do well in the lakes in my are. If you're adding weight with a flatfish, do you just add splitshots a couple feet up the line or do you tie in a 3 way swivel with a dropshot?
Kind of surprised no one mentions Apex Trout Killers. I've had good success with them, especially the frog pattern. The bottom of that one glows and I think that ups the catch.
I'm a big fan of your videos and have learned from you - thanks! I live in the Wenatchee area and I know you fish many nearby lakes - where did you film this?
i have found that instead of using a dodger you can remove the hooks from a large daredevil type lure and use that as a dodger which gives you a little more wieght to get your lure down to depth
I live in WA. South East King County. Learning to fish (again) at 50 years old. What are some good year around trolling lakes I can visit? Would love to meet you on the water someday. You explain things so well.
I really enjoy your content. You ever use a 50/50 or frog pattern Dick-Nite? I love the f5 flatfish in Orange with blue eyes or a frog pattern... Luhr Jensen needle fish in a perch pattern or brass with orange absolute slay cutts and big bows with a 1/8oz - 5/8oz weight and 3-5ft leader. Larger lakes in western and eastern Washington.

In this video you mentioned running barbless hooks on your castmaster. Are you running single barbless or triple? Where are you sourcing them? We have several trophy trout lakes over here in Idaho that require barbless hooks as well. I cant seem to find them anywhere, assistance on sourcing barbless hooks would be fantastic. Thanks for the assistance!
Funny, all my life fishing, since before I was born, and I have never caught a trout on any kind of silver/blue lure. Silver/black works great, but for some reason I never catch trout with blue.
When fishing/trolling these lures (Kastmaster, Thomas Buoyant, Pistol Pete's, Flatfish F5) do you use a swivel? Snaps? Snap swivels? Tie directly to lure?
With flat fish I always tie a swivel several feet up from the lure that wobble when you get a little twist in the line can turn into a spin easily and twist the snot out of your line
@@spiltmilt really! That's wierd. I always take the treble hook off and switch it for a size 7 barrel swivel and a size 8 Gamakatsu saiwash hook. They've always worked great for me that way.

Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.
even better is single barbless hooks. less handling of the fish, less damage and injury to the fish and less likely to hook and injure the fishermen. and you'll still land most fish. it's the law in many lakes in BC (tidal water too) and most of us have adopted it whole heartedly. trebles should go the way of the dinos.
You drop nothing but gems of knowledge man!! Thank you!!
Very informative. As a newbie to trout fishing I greatly appreciate the detail on setups

6 lb monofilament and 5 lb (with 6 lb leader) braid dependinng on the reel.
whats best to catch stocked trout in small lakes that arent deeper than 20-30 ft? slip bobber or carolina bottom rig?
Depends on water temps
