Did you know: Uber, Lyft charge extra for advance reservations

  • Uber and Lyft let travelers reserve trips in advance but the service comes with extra costs some people aren't aware of. Lyft says riders can lock in the price and avoid surges. Uber assures users can see the fare calculation breakdown, including the reservation fee, before booking and says the process is beneficial to drivers. Clint Henderson, managing editor for The Points Guy, joined CBS News to talk about his views of the impact on riders.

    Prices are going up, drivers are getting paid less. Uber and Lyft reaping the rewards while everyone else eats dirt.

    They use to pay a fee to the driver and I use to do reservations. But due to the greed of these pimps drivers will cancel these... even if en route to the reservation if the competing Rideshare company sends a better offer we will cancel. I can assure you if the driver gets 100% of that fee you will get a driver on time and smiling. There yno reason why the companies steal that money at all. It's disgusting!

      Supply and demand is the simplest way to look at things… If people keep ordering the rides, they will keep up these types of antics… Like all the people complaining about McDonald’s charging $15 for a big Mac combo😂 but at the same time they’re lining up to buy them because they don’t know how are too lazy to cook in their own home

    Rideshare is not working because they’re not paying the drivers proportionately to what they are charging the consumer. Pay the drivers, and they will be there. They have destroyed the taxi and limo business as it was and now charging as much as they can while paying the drivers as little as possible.

    Yep, when you schedule in advance it cost more. Uber has also added a bunch of miscellaneous fees like a “black car “ fee. Ridiculous.

      Don't request a black car then.... those are "nicer" vehicles

    • @UberDriverChat
      @UberDriverChat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The black car fee you were talking about is considered chauffeur service/it gets you a high-end car that’s no more than five years old with black leather interior and black paint, and can only match a certain manufacturer
      Also, if you’re going to Los Angeles airport and you order a regular Uber, you have to go through the inconvenience of going through the lot to get your Uber, which takes more time and is very inconvenient versus ordering the Uber Black service that can pick you up right at the terminal
      So it is not some random fee. Also, the driver has better insurance has a legitimate company in his name and is drug tested and screened more than your average Uber driver.

    I knew it! In December I took a trip to LA to go to Disney. Prebooking was over $26 for a .5 mile ride. I chose to book the next morning. The ride cost 10.50 before tip! I thought maybe they were giving the driver a higher fee for accepting the ride. NOPE!

    I'm glad riders are waking up to the fact that what they pay for a ride is not what the driver gets for that ride. The driver will get around 30 percent on average. It fluctuates between an average of 30 to 50 percent. It's one of the reasons for the recent driver protest/strike on February 14, 2024. Don't be fooled by Lyft CEO's "70% of 75%" accounting/number salad. (What he said was, drivers make 70% AFTER Lyft fees of 25%. He didn't emphasize the, "after Lyft external fees" part in the media).

    • @Streetbroker
      @Streetbroker 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My fees are usually around 30% upfront on Lyft, then they guarantee 70% of what's left? If you're doing rudimentary math that's 60% to the company and 40% to the driver.

    • @RSPBK
      @RSPBK 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Streetbroker "Guarantee" is a strong word but yes, that's about right. And that's why drivers are protesting. Uber and Lyft make hundreds of millions $$$ but don't want to pay the drivers - who do the work - fairly. Driver safety is another reason for the protest(s).

    Uber/Lyft their system will cancel ride and get other driver because other driver accepted lower upfront offer so Lyft/Uber can make more profile. Uber/Lyft DO NOT CARE ABOUT DRIVER AND RIDER. they care about how they increase profit. Thats all very simple and their system design to do this by auto algorithm.
    As driver i witness that rider and i did not cancel ride when its time for the pickup ride, scheduled ride gone from my app with no cancelation fee and with no explanation.

      Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure, I guess😂
      I drive Uber Thursday, Friday Saturday and Sunday for 12 hours which is the max drive time allowed and make no less than $400 a day out here in Los Angeles. I have also acquired a few private ride customers which give me about $300 a week extra on top of my Uber earnings
      I put $200 a week away for maintenance/expenses/taxes and over the past two years have accumulated $24,000 for which I paid a few thousand in taxes/2 to 3 sets of tires/about 25 oil changes/no major repairs and as of now I have $10,000 in the fund and I’m still putting $200 a week away
      I think drivers don’t manage like a business and they spend all their money and when they owe taxes or their car breaks down, they complain that they don’t have anything left
      As far as how much Uber takes, that’s the least of my concern as long as I know what I’m making I don’t care what they take

    It's really simple, because the drivers are not employees, there is NO WAY Uber could ever guarantee someone will be pick you up. And, as the report mentions, the driver isn't even paid the extra amount for the reservation. That also works against the customer, as no additional incentive is provided for any driver to even accept the reservation. So, why would customer ever TRUST any company that runs their entire busines on independent contractors to ever deliver on promises that they cannot never honour?
    If I were a passenger I would request a reservation for Lyft. Its the same issues as Uber, but the passenger isn't charged anything extra.

    the real problem with reservation rides as of now in NYC, is the system no longer show the price when it pop out in the app. I don't waste time accepting something I don't know how much I'll get pay, I'll not waste 30-90 mins get to the destination then find out I'll get pay like a normal ride. In the past the uber app show the full price of the reserved ride in the app and those reserved ride are higher pay than normal rides if you do the math and of course you have to factor in the time of the day with traffic condition and the possibility of a surge.

    As a driver, my advice is to save your money and avoid reservations. If you're in a city with many drivers, you'll always find someone by requesting 15-20 minutes prior. If you're in a city that lacks many drivers, it's likely no one will pick up the reservation anyways. What will happen is that if a driver is around on that given timeframe, the reservation gets thrown at them anyway. This means that once the driver accepts, you're basically paying a reservation premium for a trip you would have paid much less for.

    I can tell you right now that the fees for this feature is not beneficial for the rider nor the driver. Just last night I received 2 maybe 3 reservations, not 1 was worth taking the trip. I chose not to take the reservations for 3:30am to 4:45am. All trips meant I would have to be available approximately 40 minutes in advance with no rides. This is how it usually works out. I stopped taking these trips a long time ago.

    Crucial information about Uber's undisclosed additional charge for advance reservations. Quite sneaky, I must say. I drive for Uber, and I also use Uber frequently and my advice is to advance if you need to get out at a certain time
      The guy doing the interview wasn’t really upfront about everything and FYI the drivers do get paid a lot more for accepting these reservations as they have to put themselves on hold between 30 minutes and one hour to make sure they get to the destination on time which stops them from making any money for that time. So Uber does compensate them for the difference.

    As far as the comment about, the passengers are most likely not to tip, because of the extra fee is false… It doesn’t matter what the price is as only one or two, in every 10 passengers even tip at all anyways

    Price are higher, but drivers still get half or less of the fare that Riders/Customers are paying. These companies need to get regulated for the better. Not a big regulation. Just a strict regulation that's good enough. For the app to charge the customers an exact price for miles/minutes that it is going STRAIGHT to the worker (driver) plus a small amount of Uber/Lyft operational fee (maybe a flat $3-$4-$5 surcharge amount added to the final price). That way the goverment and the customers can ensure that the drivers get paid what they deserve, and also they ensure that the companies are not overcharging customers for their own greediness. This ends up in better and more fair wages, and also more volume of trips (due to people booking more rides). This is my grain of salt contribution of a logical and common sense solution.

    I’m an Uber driver I make more money on scheduled trips you need to get your facts straight I talk to my riders and I do get most of that money instead of just talking about something you know nothing about how bout you talk to a driver like me I will give you an example I had a passenger who booked one I got $27 Uber got $11 this is the only way that we make above the 40% Uber takes and I do get a generous tip

    Uber need congress to reform ride share
    WHERE IS THE REPORT ON RIDERS ASKING FOR RIDES WITH NO CAR SEAT ! We drive to them not knowing this and lose money for canceling , Uber neeeds a child cat. These people with no car seat know that they wouldn’t do that in their cars

    another news caster that does no research. I am a Uber driver people tip me like crazy when I show up early to a scheduled ride. All markets are different but I know in my market people have no problem getting a scheduled ride you’re only speaking from your market and they do give a cut to the driver normally a $19 ride that you would normally you get paid $29 and it’s a convenience fee. I’m having a driver waiting on you and you’re not waiting on the driver but good luck with your negative reporting of Uber.

    Can we talk about paying drivers $0.40 a mile when it costs $0.40 a mile to operate a car ? All drivers are driving at a loss. ! How about you do a story on the fake Uber driver accounts being sold to immigrants on Facebook marketplace.
