Tesla investors 'have had enough' with Elon Musk: Ross Gerber on EV maker's challenges

- Tesla (TSLA) has seen share declines of over 33% in 2024 year-to-date, becoming a top laggard in the Magnificent Seven group of tech stocks. The EV maker is fighting an uphill battle as EV demand in the US wanes while the company has resorted to price cuts in Chinese markets.
Gerber Kawasaki Wealth & Investment Management CEO Ross Gerber, a long-time Tesla investor and critic of CEO Elon Musk, discusses the demand headwinds Tesla faces, his own leadership concerns, and how Tesla is being evaluated as a tech company rather than a traditional auto manufacturer.
"The original story that I think most investors bought into with Tesla didn't really include Elon and Twitter. And... for a long time, we all hoped that it really wouldn't affect Tesla and the demand for its products," Gerber says. "We all know that that has now happened. The demand for Tesla products is obviously lower. They've had to discount and do many things that hurt margins and returns and, ultimately, profits for Tesla."

Do a search on how the Starlink was turned off places in Ukraine during a drone attack, but is ON in Russia. It's unconfirmed but I've never heard Elon take a stand against Putin or the atrocities happening there.
Elon asked Zelensky to surrender occupied land and the 100's of thousands of people living there to a war-criminal who has no respect for human lives, even his own people - that is not acceptable, not even to his investors.

Musk's most troublesome behavior with respect to Putin and the war is how he (a) has tried to back out of providing starlink access to Ukraine (b) has not cooperated with Ukraine's request to provide Starlink access in Crimea which disrupted Ukrainian offensives and in general has tried to stop having Ukrainian drone attacks running on Starlink, and (c) he has done nothing to limit Russia which has also been using Starlink.
I think it upsets a lot of people because Starlink got $886 billion in US subsidies. The suspicion, though, is that if Elon starts using Starlink to give Ukrainian forces a one-sided advantage Russia will just use their weapons to attack Starlink.
Still, combined with his weakening of moderation of Twitter/X, which previously has been used for social media manipulation and election propaganda by Russia, it makes Elon look like he's friendly or at least got no spine to stand up to Putin.
He literally gave the Ukrainians Starlink - just said they can't use it militarily (which is perfectly correct for a non military company). The US gov't could have given them satellite access for military purposes (but didn't).
He also called for PEACE very early on - which only got all the warmongers (like Gerber) in a twist.

I'm really sorry to say this, but while I agree with Mr. Gerber, I wish I didn't have to. The sooner Elon Musk realizes that it is painful to be publicly toxic toward others without reasonable explanation and to make the public toxic toward his ventures, of which Tesla is known to be a part, the better.
He can rant like a madman about trifles and uncontrollably postulate his false theories about almost anything in public, but he must be aware that he will also lose control of public opinion, which will then judge Tesla based on his pervasive mean-spirited insanity will, instead of after all the good that Tesla laid as the foundation for many good things.
And the negativity helps fuel hate and attack Tesla as the company loses popularity and goodness for many people.
Also, I'm so sorry to even have to discuss this here, but it would be better if Elon steps back into the public background and minimizes his negative presence as quickly as possible, for Tesla's sake. He is a genius and a driving force behind all of Tesla's recent, past and future successes - but the now increasingly devastatingly negative perception of a good brand like Tesla will have dramatic consequences, especially in the next few months, with the move away from electric vehicles and a " declining demand”. Now is the time, while others give up, to strengthen the brand and its strategy, products, plans and commitment to be reborn like a phoenix in the next few months before everything turns to ashes.

Tesla's biggest problem is that its brand is married to Elon's identity, which is why I've kept my distance. I think if Tesla ever gets a new CEO, their stock price will skyrocket. And the sooner the better!

The Norwegian sovereign fund bought 31Mill shares in the end of last year (Q4) at a price of 249 = over 7 billion dollars. They did not have any before. They may still be buying.
My advice to Elon and I really wish he reads my comment is that he tagteam with Rivian to help EVs spread and make a strong business cuz he can't succeed by himself. Also, I recommend that he doesn't get involved in politics too much cuz he is gonna ruin himself

Could be wrong but I think that Elon is trashing the stock price to get it low enough for him to buy controlling interest at >25% of shares, then once he's secured control that he is going to then and only then start the huge deployment of his robotics and AI. You heard it here first folks. Doesn't mean that Tesla and avoid a troubled market.
His money is tied to the stock. The lower it goes, the less money he has to buy it. So it's a conundrum. He also owes billions in debt when he purchase Twitter. So if the stocks drops too far down, he'll get margin calls to sell them to pay his debt to the banks. Which will make him lose more shares of the company.

Price cuts vs more marketing is the same argument I keep hearing from Ross over and over. I understand the benefits of marketing, but how effective is marketing in a high interest market? Secondly, those who understand the value they're getting for their money couldn't care less about marketing. Perhaps Elon is on to something here, rather than focusing on short term profits and the stock going up, Elon's focus is on efficiency, quality products, innovation and long term success. The legacy auto market has already taken a hit in the EV market from Tesla's price cuts, even American EV companies can't keep up. All I see is more market share for Tesla. Why do we give so much air time to these legacy Wall Street analysts with little to no vision.
