    3:01 Personally I love the inclusion of RCA ports, like you can quickly test your mixes on popular PC speakers like Audioengine and Edifier which is a super important part of DIY-mastering your own music.. the way i do it before i upload my songs on spotify, KRK monitors, airpods, JBL bluetooth speaker, Edifier PC speakers, best selling Logitech crappy PC speakers, Laptop and last but not least in my car, if it sounds good in my car then the song is finished.

    If you're a bedroom rapper, Pod caster, etc. Get the SSL. If your a Recording Engineer just starting out or want something a little mobile for at home get the Audient. Eventually as a engineer you are going to want to add gear out of the box. Compressors, EQ's PreAmps. This is very very hard to do with the SSL2+ because of the RCA jacks instead of 1/4 inch. Also Voice going in is very important but better conversion on your output is going to lead you to make better choices in mix. Improving quality all around instead of just one element.

    • @MrFree-vj8qj
      @MrFree-vj8qj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      except for mobility everything else is BS. its all "air theory", get objective advantage not "potentialy" .

    • @af4396
      @af4396 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The headroom is already so high these days you won't be able to tell the difference in a blind AB test as far as the conversion on the output... So that's a null statement. Aside from that, it totally depends. These days you can easily do everything in the box, and might even WANT to do everything in the box because it saves space and money, and again, sounds just as good especially in a good mix. The SSL sounds a little bit deeper and shimmery than the Audient, and that is a good enough reason for some people to want to go with it, as well as more tactile button options vs needing sotftware to do basic functions. It also suits some desks better, having your cables come in the back. So you can't just make a blanket statement, some engineers will like the features of the SSL and some will like the Audient and same goes for every "type" of person. Each interface has it's pros, and not really cons just subjective values put in different places.

    • @43audio89
      @43audio89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I no longer can endorse the SSL. Black Lion Audio Revolution 2x2 is now hands down the best sounding interface up to the $500+ range. and holds its weight against ADDA like Lynx Aurora. Truely master grade audio interface. If you havent heard one yet... idk.

    What about software differences? Does the SSL have a software interface? With the ID14 I can have the headphones on a different DAW output than my monitors, so I can use headphone calibration and switch to my speakers without having to remember to turn off the calibration. Also, the knob and "iD" button on the ID14 can be configured for different functions, like stereo/mono switching or to manipulate DAW controls.

      I had to get on here and share this with you bro, I figured out the best situation with these interfaces,
      and this is from usage not my opinion
      One is not better than the other!!!
      You would get the Adent or SSL 2 Plus for your regular studio needs, preferably the SSL 2+
      Then you would use the 476 or 276 Volt for Vocals, hands down the new UAD interface is the Best Vocal Interface, your getting a superior Phantom Pre Amp, a Comp that works good on vocals, and it pro actively tries to shut down latancy on Recording, so.........
      Bottom Line
      If you want your home studio set up right, for Music Production, Mixing and Vocal Recording
      You got to be willing to spend $700 on Motu, Adent, or SSL and UAD Volt.....
      Now....Ive got a great Hybrid Producing and Mixing Situation with my SSL 2+ and in my Vocal Closet, I finally have a really good vocal Situation with the Volt 476, so these interfaces are not better or worse than each other, they just have different purposes, and unless, EXP
      If you stem mix

But some of then like beyerdynamic tgi50d has a nominal impedance of 600 ohm which according to its manual it need a load impedance of at least 2 kohm. So I wonder which of these could help me more ssl2+, audient id14 mkii, or Steinberg ur24c? Moreover, I had decided to buy Steinberg with impedance of 6 kohm, but one of my friends suggested me ssl2+ with 1.2 kohm and audient with 2.8 over the Steinberg. @@JacobDarkOfficial Cool!!! I'm also interested in a shootout between the SSL2+ (which I own), and the Black Lion Audio interface.
      In this test above, I think the Audient might have been sounding punchier, because it has less output volume, so the output volume pot didn't "eat up" the dynamics and the punch that much. I find that when I pull the software volume pot down in the DAW /iTunes, and crank the SSL mains, it becomes much levelier (although less detailed, since the software volume control lessens bit depth, thus decreasing quality)
      Also, the input/USB blend pot eats up all the high-end above 15kHz, so I use it cranked all the time, but then I have to pull the mains down to around 3, which eats up some of the dynamics and the low end. (and this is like that even with my monitors in -9dB input sensitivity position.)
      I'm eager to hear about the Black Lion, though... I hope the volume pot is better :]

      @@JacobDarkOfficial Ohh, I also currently own the Apollo Twin X Duo, and I have to tell you, the SSL just beats it in sound quality... Great review. Unfortunately you didn't mention anything about phone output quality? I'm currently running two MOTU UltraLite AVBs, but they have an annoying habit suddenly jumping to max volume on first play of any audio which has blown out a couple of Genelec speakers and headphones (yes even with protection). I do voice recording via a shotgun R0DE 48v and do like the MOTU ability to set audio profiles for the mic. But this intermittent problem with my MOTU has me looking for an alternate solution. I do a lot of work with headphones on (I know taboo, but it works for me). So sadly, I'm still undecided ... maybe the Apollo Solo?

    Great video and thanks for the comparisons. For me what I liked about the Audient ID14 Mk2 was that the preamp‘s were virtually noiseless, super quiet. Cranked up to the max and I could barely hear anything. Whereas the SSL had a significant more amount of noise but the vocals just sounded a lot better, clearer, punchier, fuller sound both on dynamic and condenser microphones. It also has a hotter output due to the higher gain of 62 DB. Since the mic preamp‘s are more important to me than it was definitely SSL hands-down the winner. So I was perfectly happy with the SSL 2+ that is until I heard the RME Babyface Pro FS at a friends house this past week and I was completely floored. I just ran ID44 mark 1 vs SSL2+ and I observed everything you spoke about.
    Main difference in SSL2+ it has pretty high boost of highs on monitor outputs, that makes it less natural, but bass is very hollow on Audient ID44, and on SSL2+ bass is very good.
    Nothing is perfect.
    Latency on ID44 is higher, sound is more balanced though, yet I did get pops and clicks, just like you.

    The SSL warmth of the preamps is because they add harmonic distortion. The Audient does not color the sound. Check Julian Kraus's review of the iD14 and SSL, which show that the Audient preamps are cleaner and have lower noise and lower distortion than the SSL. His tests are objective measurements with test equipment.

    • @JacobDarkOfficial
      @JacobDarkOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree the iD14 is cleaner, but a lot of people would prefer the character of the harmonic distortion, so for me if it came down to pure vocals for music, the SSL would be my preferred choice. At the end of the day both will do the job and won't be the reason someone can't get quality results.

    can anyone answer this problem i have with the Audient ID14 MKII Audio Interface ? I find that the gain on the microphone is about a quarter of what I get on my previous interface. I have to have the mic full volume to just about be heard. I've tried it on 2 different computers with 2 different microphones and is the same. I am using good quality lavalier Tram mic. I spoke to audient about this and they said that the unit was faulty and to send it back. So I did that I've got a new unit and have exactly the same problem, there is nearly no gain/volume on the microphone. Any ideas any solutions any comparisons I would love to know about. If it is true this is a huge and stupid drawback to this unit. The other interface I have which I get plenty of volume on the Mic is a Rubix 22.

    No contest here.very apparent in the comparison. The SSL 2+ exhibits some underlined noise around 800 hz to 1.2 khz. This I also compared in my own comparison.and without the SSL 4000 console setting which made things even worse. But hey, it is what it is .Thanks for the review. I've opted to go RME Babyface Pro FS. Though here; I'd take the Audient iD14 without hesitation. Simply better Pre's and wonderfully flat and strong natural output. ; )
    Still,I like your take Jacob. I also appreciate your product honesty (i.e. Apogee Duo with PC). Yikes!

      @@m-chopbeats7526 I saw it the day it was announced !! it is perfect for anybody who wants a serious upgrade. However, as I heard, it is heavenly relying on software and the internet, which is something I'm not comfortable with. The plugins they offer for free are great but their use is very limited (can't be used in the DAW/complicated to integrate/can be used in the recording only/Actually I'm confused about it), and we don't know if their licence is lifetime free, which limits the area of competition and makes the Audient an interesting option if the preamp, dynamic range, audio processing, are as good as in the Antelope because I really feel like the software is the selling point for the Zen Go.

    SSL2 vs Id4 mk2. For Podcasting/Gaming alone which was my Use Case on a Windows 10 PC the Audient suffered from mismatched sample rates every time I turned on my PC and casued OBS and Discord to not work unless I changed it from Task manager all the time. I went back and forth with Audient for a week and believe me I troubleshooted everything, even went into the Music store where I purchased the device from and their machine did the same thing but Audient were unwilling to help and were blaming me, so I returned it.
    Whilst the both SSL2 and id4 are closely matched and the Audient is probably better because of Loop back and provides more current for high impedance headphones (10ohm vs 30 ohm) using 8:1 ratio thats (80 ohms vs 240 ohm headphone). However the SSL2 has not given any trouble so far and I can forgive it's poor buttons because it's something I will set and forget and it provides enough volume for my HD700, AKG K7xxx and ATH 900x air without being fully maxd out on the Phones dial.
    Both the SSL and Audient have their pros and cons but if the drivers for the Audient worked I would have stuck with that unit or probably have gone with the EVO4 which is better for gamers with features, however based on the id4 drivers the EVO4 would have probably been the same.
    The 4K definitely works and provides good vocal clarity but I'm guessing that would be microphone dependant or even possibly the user's voice. I use the AKG C214. Also I find with the SSL2, Audacity DAW gives me a -6db peak reading for excited voice but the SSL2's db meter goes into the red even when my voice doesn't clip. Maybe a firmware update will rectify that or they can improve on their db range and provide a clipping button instead of -10db to 0db range from orange to red. However this could be possibly user error also as I have the SSL connected to the DBX286S.

      Stricly from a quality standpoint, Zen is king but also $500. As funny as it sounds I let go of the Zen because I prefer the aesthetics of the SSL, especially as a background piece in my videos. I don't need top shelf quality as the SSL does everything I need already. I'd go with the iD14 if you need ADAT or would like 2 sets of monitors, other wise, in the $300 range, I prefer SSL

    Thanks for another very informative video! I'm not sure if my question makes any sense but here it is -> If I'm only using sample librairies to create music, does the quality of the audio interface make any difference in the final result? In other words, will the rendered WAV file be "better encoded" with a high-end interface or is it that the increased audio quality would only be heard when I play it back in my studio?

    SSL2 or ID4 for Vocal Recording Only? I have an SHURE SM7B with a Cloudlifter
    1) I heard the SSL2 is too sibilant and hissing whilst the ID4 is much warmer.
