Dear Santa 🙂
Nice stuff as always. SSL smashed it out of the park with this unit
I've fallen in love with my UC1 over the past year. SSL has crushed it with the UC1, UF8 and now the UF1.
The UF1 has definitely improved my workflow when I’m mixing. Game changer.
This looks awesome. I’m definitely putting this on my list for planned upgrades.
Thanks for the detailed review!
I really enjoy your videos they're really informative and fun to watch. I've recently been trying to learn music production and your videos have helped the most out of many other channels ive tried. Would you be able to make some more videos on your entire workflow process ? I also love the studio tours. Thanks for the great content!
Really like this little controller. It has all the features you need. Also that multifunction button to control plugin knobs is fun.
Just received mine SSL-UF1 today. Thanks for sharing...
Great video!! Been looking to add to my collection!
I grabbed the Fusion earlier this year, and am still continually impressed with how well concieved and built the unit is. I still use the original ssl channel strip plug in quite often. As a long time music audio guy, I am continually impressed with SSL
Ordered me one , can't wait to try it
Haha, you beat me to it! Mine not arriving till next week, awesome stuff. 🔥🧨💪🏽🤠👍🏽🧨🔥
Right on! And it's affordable 💯
Have the UF8 and the UC1 and they’re awesome. Can’t wait to add the UF1 in to the desk.
If it doesn't follow the selected track outside the bank of 8, its basically useless.
This was a nice overview, Andrew. I'd love to see it explored further in your workflow. After reading through the manual for this and the Presonus that other commenters are mentioning it seems to have more functions I am looking for and I really like the addition of the LCD screens. The UF1 Manual does lack the recipe for Redfish Couvillion that the FaderPort Manual includes. Additionally, at this time about 20% of the reviews for the FaderPort on Sweetwater are 2 stars and below. I've found that spending a little more money on quality for my home studio equipment upfront pays off in the long run, even it if it just resale value when I don't jive with a piece of gear.

Looks great! Seems a little pricey for a single fader controller but I get it. I may pick one up on the used market as the price comes down over time.
Nice! Think about this maybe with the UF8.
I’ve got the whole set now and I love it. its interesting this came out last, but I think maybe if you don’t have any I’d get this first! its killer. I did get an aftermarket power supply from ebay thats similar to the other units - the power supply kinda sucks as its shorter than the other ones.
Also thought about adding one to my UF8 but since I am using a Stream Deck and a Clarity M I think there is no use for it in my workflow 😄
Now you need to get some classy furniture for these bad boys from Mixingtable to match the Trident✌
Does it control non-SSL plugins or channel strips? I.e. CLA Mix hub, or Scheps? Or PA SSL4k?
I love the look of the UF1. I only wish it had a dedicated Undo/Redo button, which is essential to me when I'm tracking guitars. The Presonus Faderports has that, for that reason I'd be more tempted to get those, but I don't like the Presonus quality/feel. For tracking in Pro Tools I'm using a little Stream Deck nearby my mouse and so far it works wonderfully for my recording purposes.
This is useful.. I have the eq controller and literally threw that shit in the back of the closet I don’t use it enough mainly cause I use hardware eq’s a lot and print everything.
def looks like the best home studio control surface on the market rite now.
Do you know if it works well with Reason ?
What kind of mouse are you using in this video?
I just checked out the full setup with the upcoming 360 Link at NAMM. It's an incredible system.
Did have my heart set on the ssl big 6 but no direct outs and am concerned it might not be that future proof.
Just have a feeling they won’t support drivers and updates for it for more than a couple year.
So going RME but adding this and the uc1 could get me the hands on feel for the same price and so happy to hear it comes with the plug-ins because that saves a good £700!
Please correct me if my logic is off, kinda aiming for a setup that will still be going strong for a decade.
I will be purchasing something like this s
ome day
Would be cool to see a UF5. Combo of the UF1 and UF8. Basically the UF1 with 4 of the UF8 channels.
I can’t seem to get track follow in Studio One which makes it significantly more difficult to use. Unless I’m doing something wrong. My UC1 has no issues with it. And they don’t seem to talk to each other
what is the console you have back there?
Hey there 😊 Like you, I also combine the UF8 and UF1.
I want to turn the fader on the uf1 into the ninth fader - as the UF8 has eight faders. But I just can’t seem to figure out how to do that. In 360’s Fader Settings you can choose “1-8 (UF8 and one UF1 only)” but it doesn’t make uf1 the ninth fader, it turns it into the Selected fader - the one I have selected on the UF8… or of course you can turn the UF1 fader into the master fader, which I would rarely use.
Anyone knows how to turn it into the ninth fader?
Thanks,
Chris
First, very good tutorial. I like the views of firmware, etc. installation, while narrating over. Five star tutorial.
I’ve got one UF1 (always in focus mode,) plus a UF8. They’re a great combination. As SSL has been dealing with automation since their inception, along with the moving faders since their introduction of Ultimation in the early 90’s gives them a level of experience with moving fader automation that all other manufacturers of moving fader automation pale in comparison. As such, SSL moving faders have an excellent quality with respect to fader moves being repeated as they were first encoded. I myself have been using SSL’s since the B series.
This is like the compact version of the Avid S1 and master control setup.
Can it control stand alone plugins like Pigments 4?
I got this and was shocked to see that it does not follow the selected track in Logic. That’s a deal breaker for me and am sending it back. It’s a shame because everything else about it is great.
None of them do what u mean when u click in logic or on the hardware itself
@@IllyAssassinSo weird that they don’t do this. I had a presonus fader point and it does it.
@@AlecBridges ok ok it hurts my brain
I love mine and would never look back at another one
Excellent video - both informative and very professionally presented!
PS why are you wearing your kid's hat and moreover, why is it on backwards?
:-)
Expensive play stop button ..
Hi, is it great for Pro Tools? Thanks
How do you deal with the automation latency?
I really love the idea of single fader controllers like this, but I just couldn’t connect with the PreSonus Faderport. This looks way cooler though!
Yeah I could not hang with the Faderport. I've tried it twice.
what does it replace?
So wait it’s a like a midi controller for your daw? I’m confused I have ableton live 11. What would this do for me?
y es and no. but yes. but it doesnt work, only if it works
Once reaper is supported im all in...kind of surprising no official reaper support..
Do you have to insert a plugin in every track for this to work? Or does the 360 software in the background take care of this? Thanks
No inserts necessary. 360 runs itzz
ive heard of some issues with Ableton (and perhaps other MCU based DAWS) when trying to navigate through banks. Not SSLs fault, but i hope the upcoming SSL 360 1.6 version gives some smart workarounds.
I’m running Ableton Live 11. No issues here. A lot of people saying they have issues are not following instructions and that’s why they’re having issues.
a lot of my issues are gone with the new 1.6 update@@THE.JOZZER
What do you think about the behringer x touch one? Would you recommend it as a more affordable alternative?
From other reviews out there, it has a few problems but it mainly depends on what DAW you use - if you use Studio One or Cubase, the Presonus Faderport is better.. otherwise, I think it's better to try it out and see if it fits you (and send it back if you don't like the Behringer's). Tho, the price of the SSL is ridiculously high so even if the Touch One or Faderport had problems I'd most likely still stick with one of them
x touch one works great IMO
I want it
looks like a nice unit but its expensive and I never use my faderport 8. clients are always impressed by motorized faders thou.
The biggest thing that any of these companies could do is make the fader’s orientation switchable. I would much prefer it on the right side so I don’t have everything else in the way while I’m automating, I could just rest my hand on the surface below it. I don’t know why it’s always on the left.
I don't know for sure, but if I had to guess, I'd say it is because most people are right handed. Putting it on the left frees up your "main hand" to do everything else. Operating a fader does not require enough dexterity to be used by your main hand. Similar to how the Pitch and Mod wheel on nearly every synth and controller is on the left. Leaving your right hand to play.
Just like my cc-1 made by Cubase :)
I was disappointed by the quality/resolution of the screen and the feel of the transport buttons (rubber) - I thought the transport buttons should be the one from the matrix/nucleus. I even thought the faders felt a bit cheap compared to the nucleus. The jog wheel was really nice and smooth though. Anyway, it seems that I’m really in the minority - most people seem to love it. I’m gonna buy a second hand Nucleus.
Is anyone using this with Cubase
2:48 it is USB-C to USB-A adapter. Not B.
it would be cool if it integrated an audio interface as well
If you're paying that much for a controller, you'll probably want to choose your exact preamps and converters as well. This isn't really aimed at project studios.
@@Mikey__R this thing is aimed *squarely at home/project studios. They're marketing it along with the SSL 12 interface (DEFINITELY a pro-sumer interface) and the associated software to complete a whole ecosystem.
I agree with you on this! I hope they do that (also I've been begging Focusrite to do something like that based on the ISA range). SSL does have some interesting integrations if you're using this along with their SSL 12 interface, but built-in would be amazing
Yep,our Presonus IoStation 2-2 usb controller interface does a great job.
Curious about the feel of the transport buttons- are they soft pushbuttons, or do they have a solid click like a tape machine remote?
Great question, it's actually kind of a mix. They are soft push buttons but they do have a bit of a click to them.
Looks cool but still nothing comes close to the avid dock with avid control app. 🤓
Too bad it doesn’t follow selected track and only works in banks. Pretty useless if you don’t have a uf8
Why not use touchscreen?
Not for me
Secret : an iPAd pro is great fkn mixer for most people. Anyone tried .?
Yep this is one is made for me. I felt a huge redundancy of the uf8 as I have more than 8 tracks and have to scroll through to find the track I want to change. It felt easier clicking on the track I want to work on just using one fader to make any changes. If there was a uf32 or uf64 makes way more sense than the uf8 imo since I spend less time finding the tracks I want to work on.
Do you know that you can link several uf8’s together to achieve that?
Yeah but you get extra buttons and knobs you don't need. My overall aim is simplicity so If they brought just fader extensions for one uf8 that would be amazing @@linusblomberg6166
My Behringer X Touch one does almost everything that this does and it's $199. Plus it doesn't rely on software that at some point I'm sure will become obsolete and unsupported. $500 for a name is a big NO for me.
Yeah, this probably isn't for a budget level studio, or hobbyist. This is my take on it after years of using the UF8. The use-case and features are really impressive. That would be a fairly nuanced and esoteric long-form video breaking them all down. Definitely a pro-level product.
@@AndrewMasters You may be correct but my worry is always the software. Too many products have become junk because the software was not updated.
$700.00?
They created a presonus faderport with a high price tag. Waste o money
The faderport is a great budget, entry-level product for certain people. Mine died and literally started smoking a few years ago. I tend to stay away from super cheap products, as they retain no long-term value, and sometimes need to be replaced.
yo first
I don’t know why this feels good, I’m sorry
why is this NOT what you expected? or just generic clickbait drivel title?
Way cooler than I thought it'd be for a single fader controller.
@@AndrewMasters cool, fair enough! it does offer a lot of unique extra features compared to others on the market. I think SSL are getting quite good at that with their recent line of products.
I’m running Ableton Live 11. No issues here. A lot of people saying they have issues are not following instructions and that’s why they’re having issues.
Whilst there are always bugs in software 99 percent of time it's people with money and no idea that complain about stuff not working
Well said
People need to read, I can't imagine these people in front of a large format console
Very curious to know if anyone is using the UF1 with Cakewalk/Sonar? I appreciate it's not officially supported, however Sonar does run MCU and so in theory it could still add value. Am I going to be wasting my time and £ if I try out the UF1? Very grateful for any thoughts, thanks. @billhester
