    I don't know about mic preamps, but I can confidently say that Audient id's instrument input is on par with some way more expensive audio interfaces. I've personally tested it against an 1500$ Apogee interface, and it's just as musical, and good sounding. It's crazy, but true.

    I owned a studio in 90's and would make a good profit take out enough to pay bills and put the rest back into studio to keep competitive. So when plugins came about I got off the hardware train as soon as possible. And you nailed it with the comment about how skill set matters more than anything. Just master what plugins you have. With the amount you save on buying 1 piece of hardware you can buy most all the best vst plugins you will ever need. ( if you buy them on sale)

    Awesome review with great production values. The only thing missing is a test of the Apollo headphone output. Rumor has it that it’s too weak to drive 250 ohm headphones and above. I know the Audient can deliver in that department (both via USB3 or the old generation w/ external power supply), but the Apollo Solo/Twin headphone output seems almost like a taboo topic with very few online discussions and no real consensus. I’d hate unboxing a premium interface only to find it barely audible in my BD DT-880 250 ohms, especially knowing the Audient can handle it.

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My comparison of the headphone outputs is at 8:26 in the video. There's very little difference and both can handle high impedance headphones well, although you will need most, if not all of the output. The Apollo headphone is not affected by thunderbolt power transfer because it is mains power supplied, so there's no need to do that test.

    Interresting how the apollo smoothes out the harsh signature of the music in the loopback test...the audient sounds very kitchen radio like, but the apollo adds a nice pillow effect. I actually prefer the apollo loopback to the mastered file, as it has way more soul and makes it sound much more interresting. Maybe 30-50 passes would make a good compromise of fidelity and vibe?

    When putting my latest studio together I could have afforded either of these. I chose Audient iD44. Similar sound quality, I was a bit shocked when I heard the dullness of both on the 100 times recording test, this should not put anyone off these devices. I actually preferred the sound of the Audient and it's a joy to use, doesn't try to lock me into a closed system plugin business model and is clearly head and shoulders above everything else in its price range and several hundred dollars more. The next step up from the Audient is not an Apollo or an RME, a step up from this interface is many thousands more, I believe the iD44 and the iD4 Mkii (which has very similar specs) are in the same bracket of quality of the Apollo and RME's but cost drastically less money.
    I paired mine with an ASP 800 and will eventually buy an ASP 880 to go with it. How good is this brand? I spend zero time worrying about upgrading my interfaces and won't unless I have several thousands (maybe tens of thousands) dollars spare.
    UAD seem to attract the same sort of fanboy loyalty that Apple computers do and I understand that, but the onboard DSP ain't a thing any more now the Mac M1 eats heavy plugins cross hundreds of tracks for breakfast. The Audients are not a step down in quality, check out Julian Kraus' bench testing. I can't wait for him to get the new UAD interfaces on his desk,I think we're in for a surprise, not in a good way. Pay close attention to the dynamic range in and out of the Volt.
    I love your work Ed and I hope you don't mind a fellow northerner putting his 2 penneth in.

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks, Trevor. Yeh the Audient stuff is great. I’m using two 880s for drum pres. the Apollo system isn’t necessarily a closed Universe but it is an expensive system I agree. Personally, I think it’s unrivalled in terms of functionality.
      Julian Krause’s review of the Volts will be interesting for sure. I believe I have a review unit arriving soon.
      PS, always good to hear from a fellow northerner. 🥳

    So I have ID14 mk II and it’s connected via external monitor’s usb 3.0 hub. Therefore I looked for A to C cables and got ones with “3.0” specifications…nevertheless- I’m getting that distortion at max volume on my HD600. So I tested the ID14 connected stright to MacBook with a thick Thunderbolt cable- and distortion was indeed gone. Now - I would never need this much volume. Question is - does this distortion appears only when on max volume or it’s there even at lower volumes but is just harder to hear?

      The preamp quality is almost the same on all audio interface currently. But the apollo is not only an audio interface it is mainly a power full DSP which handle in real time many power full plug ins. If you are not interest by UAD plugin for sure you better keep your money. But check the quality of the Bass amp or Guitar or reverb uad plug in, it can change your mind.

    Hey Ed. I've been comparing an Apollo Twin X Thunderbolt with an Apogee Symphony Desktop. As clean as the Apogee is, I actually quite like the slightly more open sound of the Apollo vs the somewhat 'squashed' sound of the Apogee (almost like a dynamic mic sound-at least to my ear). Plus have had the issue with the Symphony where sometimes when I unplug, and come back after a time, it fails to be read by my Mac and I have to restart the interface.
    However, my question is whether you know anything about the audible slight popping when increasing or decreasing the gain on the Apollo... seems to track exactly with each level up, and crucially it gets recorded! I searched a bit and see others have had this exact issue, with no solution. Sometimes I need to ride my gain while recording, so this becomes a problem. Wonder if you had any thoughts...? Cheers.

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matthew. I know exactly what you mean about the squashed feeling of the Apogee interfaces. Re the gain popping, just out of interest, why are you changing the gain mid-performance? And, are you using a Unison preamp when this is happening?

    Had an apollo but purchased an id44 later. I prefer the warmness that the mic pres add. That is confirmed in the 100x loop test here which would never represent real world situations. As well, I wouldn't ever describe it as signal degradation as the Audient pres are well known to add warm color which is something some people look for on a recording. I found the uad sterile without adding a unison pre. Uad is a money sink when adding proprietary plugs so i jumped ship. All in all, they are both great though. The comparison here is a little misleading. You can't really compare pricing as outlined as you will be spending much more on the uad for plugins to fill out its capabilities. The audient is a basic soundcard without the added expense. Great video. I did bounce back and forth between 15:50 and 16:30 and there really isn't that much a difference in sound between the 100 pass tests. To me at least. The audient really is a lot of bang for the buck.

    What do you think about Antelope. They also have onboard plugins i believe. Thanks for the excellent video.

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the ZenGo is a fantastic interface, and serious competition for both of these devices. The preamps are probably cleaner, and the converters are very clean and detailed. You can use more plugins on each channel strip with the Antelope over the Apollo because their plugins are less DSP intensive when used as inserts. The Apollo has Unison technology which physically re-configures the impedance and gain staging of the preamps to replicate the analog hardware they're emulating - and it does this very well! The Apollo is still more advanced in terms of monitoring (although the Antelope is probably the second most advanced system I've seen), but the ZenGo allows you to record a wet and dry copy of each input channel which is awesome! I may do a full comparison video on all this.

    Amazing review Ed, thanks A LOT!
    Was just thinking of selling my apollo twin for an ID14... But after this I think I'll keep my apollo.
    Thanks for the guitar and bass recordings to compare !

      You’re welcome, thanks for watching. The Audient is very reasonably priced so you could get one and have the best to both worlds 🙂

    • @charlesbassiste
      @charlesbassiste 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way, I think your specs are wrong Ed. The preamp dynamic range of the Audient isn't 101dB, that's SNR signal to noise ratio.

    Thanks for this video great work.
    I have a problem when recording gibson explorer with passive T500 magnets, my signal clip though no matter how I set the gain pots. This is not the case when I record Harley Benton P bass.
    Do you connect the guitar directly to the card or do you have some DI to reduce the input signal?
    Do you have this experience with any of your guitars with passive electronics?
    What pickups did you record with?

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I hope the video was helpful. I don’t play guitar so can’t comment on pickups. Are you using the Hi-Z input on your interface for the Gibson? And are you using an amp sim before it?

    • @Projamusic
      @Projamusic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EdThorne Yes, I connected the guitar direct to the front instrument input. But the signal clips without any additions to the signal and without amplifier simulations.

      @@Projamusic The instrument input should have a Hi-Z selector switch to introduce a higher impedance circuit for hi gain inputs such as your guitar. A DI box can also do this.

    Hey! Can the AUDIENT iD14 mkii be sufficient enough to power the NEUMAN 103 at an optimal level?

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely. The 103 is a condenser mic which typically has a high output and the iD14mkii has 58dB of preamp input gain which is loads for a condenser. Plus, there’s an additional 10dB of digital gain available on each channel in the iD Mixer App. That’s a great recording combination 👌🔥

      @@EdThorne Ed you're a star. love the quick response also!
      Also another question:
      Shall I use this combo on FL Studio or Logic? (Soley for Recording rap and singing Vocals, mixing and mastering to an already made beat, and would prefer to stick to the stock plugins on both DAWS).
      Which one you reckon?

      @@TeionZ I’ve been using Logic for 15 years, and I haven’t used FL Studio so I can’t really comment fairly but Logic is considered up there with ProTools and used in professional studios for many good reasons. See if you can get a demo of both and see which feels best. Logic probably has an instrument sample library larger than all the other DAWs put together too, it’s immense!

    I've been trying to decide what interface I want and well, I just can't find any reason not to pull the trigger on the id14. It's perfect for what I need and the price is right. Maybe someday if I win the lottery or something I'll switch to a UA environment. Lol

      The majority of negative comments I hear about ANY audio interface, is usually from PC users having driver issues. Mac users simply never have these problems. Of course as well, the more complicated the device, the more likely driver issues, and the Apollos are COMPLICATED! The simplicity of the Audient in comparison is brilliant but highly effective!

    I could perceive the depth of the Apollo on the bass guitar test- more depth than the Audient, maybe not a deal breaker but if you listen close enough, you might hear- or rather, feel it.

      Yeah, and the bus processed drums had much much clearer high end with the Apollo. You could really hear the hi hat come alive, as the audient sounded a bit more dead and sterile in the hi Department. Imo.
