- The "Nullarbor", literally meaning "no trees" in Latin, is a 1,100 km wide, mostly treeless plain, located on the Great Australian Bight. This vast open space is not only famous as being the largest limestone plateau in the world, but also known for the stunning Bunda Cliffs falling up to 120 meters vertically down into the sea!
Riding the Nullarbor is undoubtedly one of the big highlights when cycling across Australia, and certainly didn't disappoint, but it is a bit different to what you might expect...

This video brought tears to my eyes. I’d gone from Sydney to Perth alone while in my 40s. I found Darwin to SYD a much harder ride via the Alice, port Augusta, Adelaide, great ocean road then the south coast to SYD. However, after ten thousand km in the back of beyond. I swore the next time would be on a bike with a throttle and 650 cc. My ride across the Nullarbor was in April. Never saw a drop of rain. Never hit any of the roaring 40s. At the end before we fall off the perch, about all we have left are memories.

The Roe plain, where you drop down at Eucla and back up at Madura is an ancient seabed. The ground is covered in shells along most of the section, particularly east of Mundrabilla. Glad you enjoyed riding across the paddock and seeing the spectacular Bunda cliffs. 🍕🚲🍍
Absolutely stunning imagery! And I’m glad Tobi’s brakes worked ok. Stopping that close to the cliff’s edge almost made me lose my lunch. 🤣

I’ve been waiting for this video to come out and it didn’t disappoint! Kudos for making two weeks worth of meals fit in your bikes! Watching Louisa shop was right up there with watching the whales, scenery and Toby getting too close to the cliff.

What the powers to be should do is fund a CYCLE WAY , a mix of solid grounded dirt/bitumen and or cement width for two bikes for the length of the Nullarbor Plain . Enjoy your trip and keep loving life :).

A friend of mine was killed on that stretch of road a few years ago: a road-train driver didn't see him and ploughed into him and his bike.......and didn't stop. Take it easy out there, but be careful!

I just discovered your channel and so fun to watch this video. You're doing great work editing and compose the videos! I did this leg myself nine years ago and so fun to watch it, as it really brings memories back, Bunda cliffs, camp life, the nature, the flies etc. It's almost feels like experience it again!

That drone gives great context to how remote the ride is. The joy of camping, when not blowing a gale, is clear. Australia has a lot going for it when you can just pull off the road a bit, just behind that bush, and no one cares. It's even legal once you are out of the cities as a legacy of the sheep-droving days in the 19th Century. The silly myth of Australia having dangerous animals seems to have been shown just that. They are there, but you seldom see them. Those caravan drivers are a real fear. And a few cyclists have been wiped out by those long truck "roadtrains". By the way, if you want to avoid the traffic there was always the Great Central Road from Uluru to near Kalgoorlie. I guess you just have to come back sometime. Happy trails!
We've got some more riding in Australia planned that will take us off the highways a bit more. 😊

When the little lady came out with a shopping trolley 🛒 full of food, I was looking for a camper truck thinking you traded in your bikes 🤔 Then you both pulled it all on your bikes and rode off 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Unbelievable !!
Haha, yea, our four front panniers are mostly only for food so we can pack a lot if we need to. 😅

BTW "Null" in latin means the absence of something. "Nil" means "0 or nothing" thats why there are some trees. "Arbor" of course means "Tree".

It's an amazing adventure. How guys do you recommend the road are safe ? And also how you managed with the water in the last stop before 1k plenty road
We found the road across the Nullarbor to be relatively safe, but it is of course very busy. Across the Nullarbor you have Roadhouses every 100-200 km where you can fill up water.
And a question comes to my mind: what will You do when You finish this journey? Do You have plans yet?
We have some ideas, but it will still probably be another year before we're back home. :)

I listen to people talking about how far 100km is, and its only 62 miles. When I was younger, I'm 61 now. I'd do 62 miles on a whim, just on a day trip. Now I wasn't loaded down, well, snacks and water. Nice video's.
Enjoy this great adventure in australia! It's one of the inspirings coutry at all. I have taked the way from Darvin to Mt. Isa - Townsville. And there I haded moustly one car in a half houre. I was moustly alone for me. If you take this way - it is amasing too.

Ok Ok Ok a second comment from me here in New Hampshire. So yea. There is a word and concept that is relatively common in the USA hiking world. One of my very most favorite words ~ even more than the term "brand new." ✨Bivouac ✨. Obviously derived from France. You guys demonstrate the value of this term in almost all your videos. Maybe there is a similar German term ~ don't know. I think of this term often. I am retired, family in Ohio, living alone on a very special slice of land here in New Hampshire. Fixed income. Just getting by, but so happy. Yep. I have been bivouacked for years. You know the meaning ~ share the german word for this. I know you can.

How long distance you cycle for in a day?😊
It depends on the time of year, weather, road conditions and elevation gain, but normally around 60-80 km a day. Across the Nullarbor we did around 100 km a day.

Yea, Tobi recently got the Suntour SP12 NCX suspension seat post and Louisa has a telescopic one from Zoom.

@@philpjm6659 The Suntour is pretty good. In our opinion is does make a big difference, especially parallelogram suspension seat posts work really well in taking out the impact of bigger bumps.

We're not too big into football (women or men), so no. We did want to see a game live though anyway, but unfortunately the timing doesn't work for us.

Thank you so much for sharing your amazing Nullarbor cycling adventure, this is something that very few people will ever get the courage to do, a great authentic travel video, not even the movie house's could capture what you guys have, even the audio was great, the howling wind on the bunda cliffs and almost losing the tent was amazing... We traveled by car to WA and back about 14 years ago, we came across a few cyclists pedaling their way across this great country.
It really was a great experience :)
Those burgers and wedges made me mouth watering as well. I wondered what were those burger patties made from. Some of the Australian travel videos that I watched suggested that Kangaroo meat is very popular there as pork and beef, so I think that Kangaroo meat certainly qualified as Australian's local cuisines you guys should give it a try and report back to us!! 😋
These burgers were veggie / beef. But we have seen kangaroo on the menu a few times! We'll definitely try it before we leave 😅

You know, you two are an inspiration to humanity. Absolutely. Crikey Tobi there at the beginning of this video where you rode up to the edge of the cliff, if your brakes had failed at that moment you would have taken a header over the edge. .Anyway its good see that you've both endured very well to date and as usual always a big positive smile for the camera. How much longer are you intending to stay in Oz. As you explained before you've still quite few klms yet to get to Perth, when will that be? Did you get to see a Kohala in the end. You rode past quite a few, but because they blend in so well and you've got keep an eye on the road, its very easy to miss them. They're just a bundle of leaves, that they blend in so well. 30,000 klms, that's a bloody long way. Crickey 2 years and your still together, truly beautiful to see this. It's a great pity that so many others don't have your attitude towards their partners as you 2 do. Sure it wouldn't be a perpetual bed of roses. Yes, but amongst those thorns there live some really beautiful flowers and you show them to us in your videos. All the very best for the rest of your trip, I pray the wind God stays at your backs.👍👍👍👍💯.
We plan to stay in Australia until the end of October, and although we are pretty close to Perth now already, we are cycling some trails and taking our time to get there. 😊

Not gonna lie. ~ I have that A Fib diagnosis, am recovering from a bicycle accident 2016, bad one, but have been blessed with an "almost all" recovery. But alas, there is memory loss. Nope, Tobi was correct. Nullarbor comes from Latin - 'nulla' feminine of 'nullus' (no) and 'arbor' (tree). The Aboriginal name for the region is "Oondiri" which means "the waterless".

Rode the Nullarbor in 2002 as part of a round-Aus trip. So many people told us it would be so boring but for us it was a real highlight. One of our favourite parts of our round-Aus trip. My conclusion is it might be boring in a car, but magic on a bicycle.
