- It's hard to put into words the feeling you get when you're standing in the middle of the largest salt flat in the world and stare into an endless sea of white! Cycling across the Salar de Uyuni truly is an incredible experience.
After spending three relaxing weeks in La Paz, our longest break in one spot in over 15 months, we set off south through Bolivia towards the Salar and beyond.

Great video. I was cringing looking at all that salt on the bikes, but that's awesome that they have a place at the end to hose them off! Safe travels!

Well deserved break. Happy birthday tobi. I thought I saw louisa with a new guitar. Hopefully we will here you playing the new guitar. cheers
Thanks! No new guitar, just a new and colorful case. We’ll talk about it more in upcoming films. 😊
First off, it was nice to meet you both. I wish we had more time to chat. Second, great job on the video. Our route was almost identical. We likely missed each other by a few days and it’s interesting to see someone else’s interpretation of almost the exact same adventure. We actually have a lot of shots in common. Thanks for sharing and safe travels.
Thanks! Was nice to briefly meet you too 😊 What’s your route looking like now? We saw you went north to Copacabana, right?
@@louisaandtobi I just got back to the states yesterday. I’m not sure what my next move is. I’m thinking Columbia, but no bike. Just a month of Spanish lessons.
Ex post happy birthday ! 🎂

Thanks! We’re in Chile right now but will be in Argentina in a few months.
I couldn't agree more that your video making skills are just getting better and better! This episode was a ton of fun - great job!
Thanks 😊
We have certainly enjoyed all the videos. I think we are caught up. Are We? Is there after Bolivia videos? Would love numbering if that would be a consideration. We love all your narratives and great Wow...the Peru was stellar!
Bolivia is the latest travel video 😊 All the travel videos (except Peru because that is a stand-alone docu) are numbered… Bolivia is part 30, for example, like it says in the title 😊
@@louisaandtobi Thanks. I watch on TV and haven't seen the numbers...but will look harder. I might just be too anxious to start it up. Watched your2023 plans video and look forward to all. You two are just great and love seeing how well you enjoy your adventures and each other.
New subscriber here, thanks for posting. Great choice of music. I'm sure I've missed it from your previous videos.
How are you able to navigate some of these roads/routes? Obvious answer would be a app or satellite GPS. Just curious because I'd be worried of getting lost. Thanks.
Thanks for the sub! We generally navigate with google maps & Komoot on our phones. On the Salar we often followed tire tracks and used distant mountains for general reference. But we also had the “line” from our planned Komoot route to check.
You dont need salt for to cook. A lot of salt there.😂
What an amazing trip through the salt plains. How do you keep your bearing? Did you use a compas?
Most of the time there are “trails” carved into the salt from cars which you can follow. Otherwise we used distant mountains as reference and followed the planned “line” on our phones. 😅
Drop by in the Phillipines
How do you carry that guitar...
Interested in your bags and racks...👍😃❤👊
Hey, if you check out our “Bikes & Gear” playlist we have several videos about our bags, guitar rack, etc. there. 😊
Alhamdulillah ya kak
This country is still living in the past regarding masks…
I would highly recommend to you doing most of the way south through Argentina! Infinite reasons: is much more scenic through Ruta 40, maybe 3 times cheaper than Chile (you have already realized the European plus prices in Chile) and hospitality is different as well, Argentinians (in general) being more hospitals than Chilean (they are cool too).
In case you go use Western Union to send money from home, as you will pay LESS THAN HALF OF the OFFICIAL RATE. Using credit card or withdrawing from the ATM, you will have a much less favourable rate.
Another good reason:
The best wine in the world is from the Northwest and Mendoza provinces!
The Carretera Austral, south of Pto Montt is obviously a must!, but the North of Chile is completely worthless. In case you get stuck for the next winter in Argentina (it is too late to reach Ushuaia in time), you will find cheap places for rent or volunteer as well. And immigration also very easy. You can extend to a Year, paying some fine before or after.
Go to Argentina!
It’s very interesting for us to read this after now cycling three weeks through the “worthless” north of Chile and actually really enjoying it! Sure, parts get a bit dull, but other parts and the national parks along the coast are really beautiful. And from what we’ve seen (on Instagram) of other people currently cycling the Ruta 40, there is a lot more rain and to be honest, the scenery didn’t look too special.
Regarding the people, we of course can’t speak for Argentina, but in Chile the hospitality has been incredible! Hardly a day goes by where we aren’t given something on the road, and have even been invited to stay with people. One of the countries with the best hospitality we’ve ever encountered, in fact!
Chile is expensive, for sure, but as it’s been so easy to wild camp, and the people so hospitable, it hasn’t been too big of a problem. Accommodation is always the most significant cost factor.
We’re not really fans of Western Union, with the fees it’s often actually not that cheap, and the lines to pick up money can be very long. We use “Revolut”, where we have pre-paid credit cards and can, in most countries, pick up money at any ATM without any fees and really good exchange rates.
We might go to Argentina after Santiago, before we come back to Chile to cycle the Carretera Austral, but not sure yet. Did you get your opinion of northern Chile / Argentina from personal experience cycling both or is it just what you heard?
@@louisaandtobi Actually from personal experience cycling it, I did part of the Ruta 40, in the Northern Argentina, but yes, is rainy season now, forgot about it. I went also to Ushuaia 10 yrs ago from Southern Brazil, through Carretera Austral. Thanks for taking the time answering me, but you didn't had to do so!
Enjoy your time, your videos are superhiper good!
