  • Space is at a premium in my tiny apartment workshop and I needed another workspace, so I made this cat-proof 3D printer enclosure that doubles as a standing desk!
    View/download the 3D model here: a360.co/39zFGzk
    Instructable: www.instructables.com/3D-Prin...
    This design is and easy to build with just a few handheld power tools! I cut, dyed and finished all the pieces outside, but did the rest of the build on my apartment floor. The frame is assembled with glue and pocket screws. Getting the acrylic cut to size from a plastics supplier was a huge time saver and valuable outsource. Acrylic is really expensive at the big hardware stores, and I'm not really set up to cleanly cut acrylic to size.
    Dying 2x4s with India ink really takes a cheap material to the next level, and they contrast beautifully with the unstained baltic birch plywood.
    This enclosure provides a stable printing environment, gives plenty of access to the printer from all sides (especially with the drawer slides), provides tons of storage, keeps my cat away from the printer, has plenty of room for accessories, and looks so awesome when lit up at night!
    The standing desk has been a gamechanger for my productivity - I find that when I’m recording audio, it’s sometimes a lot easier to talk when I’m standing up. Maybe it brings out that cocktail party mindset?
    Designing and printing the remote holder and doorknobs was a really rewarding experience. 3D printing provides such a cool opportunity for custom, unexpected accents like these!
    I’m super excited to continue integrating digital fabrication into my projects. Stay tuned!

    Tipps I gathered from watching a bunch of enclosure videos: 1) Prusa says to put the converter outside of the compartment. So an electronics „Department“ would be nice.
    2) I would vent the enclosure with a filter. Even PLA can have fumes you don’t want to breathe. 3) To make it more silent put put the printer on a stone plate thats on some dampening material. Maybe Squash balls cut in half. 4) Having a temperature control built in can be verry nice. Depending on your climate and what you want to print. 5) Polycarbonate for windows is also cheap resistant and clear. You can just cut it with a knife then break it on the seam. 6) Altho I like the idea of having 2 funktions probably would like to have the printer higher up, more storage for Fillament and built a dedicated stand for the Laptop closer to what musicians have to hold their notes, or painters for large canvas, but more steady and save. 🤓👍

    • @ushiocheng
      @ushiocheng 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      on top of that: PLA fume is not great but not that offending, where as the not that noticable issue is the amount of tiny strings it produces (to the point I find a PLA cotton ball in my toolhead on a yearly cleaning!) so HEPA+activated carbon is advisorable. (I suggest putting a bentobox filter on the outside, and you can swap the bottom piece to decide if you want a vent or a recirculating filter for ABS)
      I would suggest go stright for a separate filament compartment if you want to do more advanced 3dprinting. abs is sus and nylon sucks water like nothing else. also you get the benefit of smaller chamber volume to heat soak and dedicated filament storage that can be kept dry (on that note one cheap option is just find a sealed plastic box, drill few holes for bowden adapter, and put lots of decicants in there

    Quick note, you might want to relocate the power supply outside the case so it doesn't get too hot. Heat kills psu's and adds more heat to the enclosure

    Really inspiring project! I just bought a 3d printer and I only have space for it in my bedroom/studio, and I was worried about printing fumes, even though it is only PLA. This project you created made me realize I should create an enclosure space for the printer. This would solve my problems! Thanks for sharing this!! It helped me a lot! :)

    • @MorleyKert
      @MorleyKert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome! An enclosure is so great - not just for the fumes but reduces noise, better quality prints through protection from drafts/temperature swings, protection from dust... glad I could help! 😁❤️

    • @danielaubert5608
      @danielaubert5608 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MorleyKert Do you print with PLA? Some people say it is not very good to print PLA in an enclosure, because it prevents the plastic from properly cooling each layer , due to higher temperatures inside the enclosure. And this affects print quality. Did you have problems like this?

    • @MorleyKert
      @MorleyKert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I print mostly with PLA, I haven’t noticed any issues with layer adhesion or print quality . I would think the cooling fan would be sufficient to cool each layer. But if I’m printing a big model, I’ll crack open the top doors to encourage a bit of air circulation.

      Only finding this now. Really love the idea of the drawer slides to get the printer out, super clever, and never thought of it all these years of printing with an enclosure. My only question is do you find the printer stays put on them while printing? Do they move around as the printer moves and create extra rattle?

    Thats good. It would be nice to do a enclosure for pc towers. To isolate sound and have some inner extra ventilation i dont know. It would be a really nice project because a lot of pc build owners have the problem with sound. I guess 3 printers have it to. Does this enclosure isolates sound too? thank you

    How have the drawer slides worked under your 3d printer? I though this was an interesting solution for accessibility but would think this would negatively effect print quality and inevitably cause reduced print speeds... a stable/solid print surface is really important for 3d printers since vibration will cause less smooth print surfaces.

      I’m actually planning on building a new one this year! I’ve outgrown having the printer on the ground, the storage up top is pretty messy, and it does get too hot inside for some filaments. Noise reduction is good!

      Also how is the sound reduction from the enclosure

    • @MorleyKert
      @MorleyKert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My apartment is air conditioned and I usually print with the door shut. Periodically I'll check the temperature and if it seems too warm, I'll open the upper doors to let the hot air rise out the top and hopefully draw cool air in from the bottom (but I find myself doing this less and less as I use the printer more, and continue to get good results). I'm getting great print quality with this set up, so I don't think it's too hot inside. There are small gaps around the acrylic doors which provide a bit of venting. In response to your second question, it definitely reduces the sound as well!

    Do you have any plans to ventilate or heat the enclosure so you can print abs/asa?

    • @MorleyKert

      Yes! Probably ventilation and a dehumidifier more so than a heater, as the printer heat keeps the enclosure pretty warm. But a full on thermostat heater would be pretty cool!
