So right. First heard The Pot a few years ago. Loved it. Then got more into Tool with Schism, Sober, and Stinkfist (imo their more mainstream sound), then jumped over to Laturalus album and the psychedelic/third eye stuff hit me with Parabol/Parabola and Laturalus. And The Grudge became my favorite for years. Then Fear Inoculum hit and Descending was such an amazing buildup (the first 6 minutes of that song is perfection). Loved Invincible, Pnuema, and Fear Inoculum. And listened to that album everyday for months. Then i realized i found myself watching reaction videos and realized that I actually love Tool, but I never sat down to listen to their entire discography. So instead of watching TV every night, I'd go put my headphones on (bought really good headphones just for this btw) and listen to one album a night. 10,000 days album hit the spot. Wings for Marie Pt1 and 2, Jesus...that had me in tears. And then Rosetta Stoned hits and I'm caught soooo off guard. I had no idea what I was listening to. But it was the only song where I pushed my headphones more onto my ears and was just frozen listening to it. Fast forward another year, and it is...without a doubt....my favorite song. The buildup in the 8th minute...something about that final part, just takes me away. And, like you said - my favorite Tool song (because it took time to appreciate it and warm up to Tool's sound. This, imo, is the end of the road. This song is Tool's version of an aged whiskey. You can't appreciate until you get a taste for all the subtleties. It would've been my least favorite and totally turned me off of Tool if it was my first song. It really needs to be played at the end of your Tool journey. Only then, imo, have your ears and mind been prepped enough. It's been my favorite Tool song for longer than any other (which I guess means it's my favorite on any given day).
being OGT from Undertow back in the early 90s this is the apogee of their greatnenss. i thought Lateralus would have been my favorite song but this came along and i can listen to it a thousand times and still love it
Yup. Didn't think anything could have topped Lateralus. I always never liked the beginning of Rosetta Stoned so I never thought it would ever be my favorite song but I was SO wrong
How amazing is it that Maynard could tell that story without worrying about parameters or standard rhyming patterns......to the beat of the most twisted and cerebral musicians on the planet........imagine this too......for the bulk of the 10,000 days tour, they opened with this!! Greatest band on the planet!!!
They opened with Jambi when I saw them on the 10k Days tour. But they definitely played this song. Jambi Stinkfist 46 & 2 Schism Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann) Rosetta Stoned Right in two (Intension intro) Wings for Marie (pt 1) 10,000 Days (Wings pt 2) Lateralus Vicarious Ænima Hell of a show
The sheer fact that this could be reproduced live is mind blowing. And they did blow my mind when I saw them do it. Maynard in riot gear was just a bonus.
Yes! Please do them together. You are good love them. Those 2 are first on all of my Tool Playlists for the past decade. Followed by the Holy Trinity and then Lateralus. I am just gonna say that I'm thinking of throwing the entire Fear Inoculum album next(except for the interludes, save CCT). It is extremely tempting 🤔 😆 🤣
Your face when Rosetta Stoned came on was great. And that silently spoken "What the fuck?!" is par for the course, I think, when people first hear this song. Well done!
I think you are 100 percent correct when you say you wouldn't introduce someone to Tool by playing this song. I've always thought of this song as one for the true fans of Tool who can really appreciate their talent both lyrically and musically. Love this song! Great reaction too.
@@Gideonite he was messing around with feedback and Adam noticed it and told him to keep it going and that’s how the song was started. Justin gets amazing sounds out of his bass!
You had the most genuine reaction to this, moreso than any other reactor I've seen do it, anyway. I'm talking about when you were just listening. Cool to watch. Now, listen to it a few more times. It gets better. Once you can sing the whole song without the music, you're ready to hear the origin(s) of which it was manifested. That makes it so much better.
This was the first Tool song I ever heard. I absolutely loved it. It’s been 5 years and I haven’t gone more than a week without listening to a full album.
Great to see you got the humor aspect. Not everyone goes for the lyrics in a first reaction but I feel the experience is really benefited with this one song in particular.
The song is a trip. Once I connected the context of the intro with the song, (before we knew the lyrics) it became one of my favorites. At first I was feeling uneasy and lost when listening to it... like, it didn't go anywhere and I could never settle into a groove. Then I realized that's exactly the point! It's a trip, you can't hold on to anything, you just have to take the ride and let go. The thematic runs through the whole composition and structure (or lack thereof). It's an amazing "concept song".
I have been waiting for you to get to this song. This is probably my favorite Tool song. I always have to listen to it twice in a row. Might have to watch this video twice. 😉
my favorite thing about rosetta stoned is that it really is the epitome of not overthinking. there are ways to read into it, but at face value it really is just a hilarious story of someone who got too high and is freaking out because they didnt write any of it down. It's difficult to find a song that can make me headbang while also laughing my ass off. much love, and keep up the killer content
Definitely not a song for “new” Tool listeners. This is one of my top 3 Tool songs but it took me years before I really came to love it this way. Props to you for enjoying it from listen number one, you’re more musically open than I was when I heard it the first time. I love watching your Tool journey.
The climax cemented it as one of my favourites. Literally get teary eyed when Maynard belts "Overwhelmed as one may be, placed in my position." It just hits my brain and breaks something in the best way.
Wow hands down my favorite reaction of yours. Stumbled into it by accident from the proper interludes and just fell down the wormhole appropriately and honestly had a very wise and articulate interpretation on your first listen! The best part of this was watching your facial expressions. I feel like I must have made the same types my first time hearing this song. Being shocked, the engaged, then shocked again, then laughing my ass off while at the same time being blown away at how well it was put together. I feel like you really "got it". Ha ha...so I’m laughing...watching you read those words in the first section. Lol. Go back and listen again...so badass this song is. One of the best rock songs written, IMO.👍
This is my take and I'm not sure I'm 100%. Lost Keys (blame Hoffman) refers to Albert Hoffman, the inventor of LSD. Rosetta Stoned tells the story of a man who's ends up at the hospital and it's not clear if he had a UFO encounter or if he was just blasted on LSD and hallucinating. Extremely fun pair of songs!
Ïf i remember correctly it's based on a true story of a guy who claimed to have been abducted by aliens, he was told how the world would end and how to prevent it, but when he woke up in the hospital he couldn't remember what they said, so made out to be a hero, but he forgot his pen. It is written in a hilarious way though lol
Maynard made appearances in the band, as well. Was also called Green Jellö first but Kraft Foods were a-holes and whined enough so they changed it. And if I'm not mistaken, Green Jelly still tours these days if they can (he at least does collaborative shows). Watched him on a podcast tell the story of this song not long ago. Bill Manspeaker is his name. Listen to 3 Little Pigs by Green Jelly... Maynard is in that one. Comment back if you can figure out which part is his.
I've only just tripped over this series (which is great)... I immediately looked for you coming to terms with Rosetta Stoned 😅 you wtf'ing the lyrics in real time is a joy
Lived with SP most of my life. His dream description is very accurate. Well a version of it anyway. It differs here or there. No ufo's though for me unfortunately. Haha. A mate gave me a fuckin huge book about SP once. Guiding you on how to control it and astral travel. SP is way too intense to hold long enough to even try that shit. If its possible at all.
With this song, the destination is not the point. It's the ride to get there that's important. In regards to not playing this song to introduce people to Tool, while I do tend to agree, in my case, 15 years ago when 10,000 Days was released, I bought the album. It was the first Tool album I ever had, and Rosetta Stoned, one of the most complex songs in history, was my first favorite off that album. Had no fucking idea what it was about, but goddamn the musical ride alone was enough. Think I had that CD in my car for the better part of a year, and yeah, to this day it's still one of my all time favorite pieces of music from anyone.
I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen someone accidentally experience Rosetta Stoned. 😂🤘

It was a buddy from the band Green Jelly. One of Danny's first bands.
@@Disgustipated8404 yes all correct. Saw Manspeaker on Trash Talkers Rappers React YT. 👍
I was 4 hits of acid when I discovered TOOL
You were acid and now you're a person?!

tool truley are a puzzle wrapped in an enigma surrounded by mystery. the gift that keeps on giving. love watching newcomers!
Brilliant absurdity is a perfect description of this tune.
Sleep paralysis can be stress induced, sounds a lot like your dream experience.
"Brilliant absurdity". Yep, pretty much.
"like that time Dave floated away" HAHAHA!
A song is defined as a bunch of noises arranged in a pleasurable fashion. They're ALL songs.
Lipan Conjuring is an Apache Medicine song.
