The music and the lyrics. The word choice and flow is uniquely satisfying in way I can't quite place my finger on. "Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending, to write it down for all the world to see...."
The fact that this song was last in a poll is criminal. One of my all time favorites and a hidden gem for sure. Read the lyrics when you get a moment. They're hilarious
This is also in my top 3 Tool songs of all time, along with Third Eye and Pneuma. I was a full blown psychonaut as a young man 🍄😁 so I focused a lot on the lyrics of those songs at first (I can recite the lyrics for almost every Tool song from memory.) And admittedly have never really focused on the bass for Rosetta Stoned in particular, this was a great analysis 👍 Also, Disgustipated is a close 4th on my list, amazing lyrics in that song as well as very unique instrumentals.
Rosetta Stoned is definitely a hidden gem. It’s extremely complicated: it evolves at crazy pace, never quite repeating itself, with what feels like a thousand different time signatures overlapping each other. Classic Tool.
Man, this is so true. It’s 100% Tool, but more epic in a way. It’s the ultimate ‘release’ after a huge tension build up. I even get sort of sad when you get to ‘to write it down for all the world to see’ knowing this section is almost over. Rewind, repeat a couple of times and then move on 😅
One of my absolute favorite tool songs. I get goosebumps every time when he says "Alrighty then, picture this if you will..." and you get that little guitar arpeggio of like 4 notes and then boom! the whole band are immediately locked into the tightest most relentless groove ever. The whole song has this hypnotic swaying feel to it and is riddled with weird time signatures and polyrhythms but you can still feel the groove. The lyrics are a perfect fit with my favorite tool line ever: "And he looked right through me, with somniferous almond eyes, don't even know what that means, must remember to write it down."
The time signature changes and polyrhythms in this song are insane. It's one of my favorite songs to play and it all feels natural once you get the sway of it. most the stuff you thought was 6 or 7...was actually 11. i count it like 123, 123, 123, 12. That funky awesome bass groove around @16:30 is a 5:3 poly, then Danny adds the 4, it's nuts, and so much fun to play on Bass. The bass is hitting that punchy higher melodic note, following the snare, on every 3rd beat, but it's counted in 5.
Love these so much. 13:37 is Justin turning on a guyatone auto-wah/envelope filter, possibly with some fuzz and making that crazy synth sound with Maynard’s “strapped down” vocal. My favorite part of the whole song. Such a masterpiece of psychedelia.
YES! I saw them in Vancouver 2023. I listened to a lot of TOOL, but this song was less on my radar. However, for that reason, this one along with Jambi really stood out to me during the live performance. Jambi was the highlight/surprise of that show, partly because of the visuals during the solo.
The bass & polyrhythmic drum breakdown over the guitar solo is currently my favorite musical passage in Tool's entire discography. This will likely change soon, they seem to cycle round frequently.
I've always been a surface listener to music, so I've always really only noticed the guitar on that part with just a bit of the bass filling it. This time I really focused on the drums (maybe my headset plays it louder than other devices I've used?) and was amazed at the work Danny was doing. I'm no drummer, but even I can tell the man is something else.
Super epic track! The “shit the bed again” was and is a term I’ve used to this day when somebody or myself do something dumb or disappoint, what a treat to come back too, I enjoy the long videos!
When you first start listening to this album, the typical songs are your favorite but after 10+ years I always come back to this one lol 20:02 chills every. fucking. time.
This is one of my all time favorites by them. Heck, it's one of my all time favorite songs ever. I was one of those that voted for this in that poll. Maybe it's such a deep cut that a lot of people who voted haven't even heard it before. I wish I had the time to go to one of their shows now to see them play this live. I almost always listen to Lost Keys, the song that leads up to this one, before this one. Between those 2, it makes an amazing 15 or so minute song, and it don't seem like 15 minutes either. This one isn't the only fantastic deep cut either. There's both parts of 10,000 Days (very deep and emotional), The Patient (Off Lateralus, i've seen them play that one live), Ticks and Leeches, the stretch on Aenima between Message to Harry Manback and Pushit, Bottom (featuring an appearance of Henry Rollins), and Swamp Song. So many fantastic deep cuts to be had. I'm glad you went and looked back at Rosetta Stoned after so long
I think this might be my favorite song of all time. The way it's composed and arranged just never gets boring to me, how all of the parts could be locked in at times, but then they also go away from eachother is just so incredible. The way this song transforms in so many ways is perfect. This song is truly a masterpiece, no doubt about that. This song is so deep and yet so heavy, melodic, just EVERYTHING. The build into the climax is so perfect too. I can't even fully describe how this song is really JUST PERFECT. I hope you do Parabol and Parabola
Tool are the only modern musicians I know who do this type of song, and it's not every song that they do. Instead of following the standard order of a song (Intro, verse, chorus, verse etc) the song is a journey, or almost like a play where there are acts. I've heard it in classical music, but not really in any modern genres.
Imagine being Danny, Justin, and Adam and coming up with this song, then giving it to Maynard and thinking “How the fuck is he going to write lyrics over that?” Then Maynard comes back with lyrics that fit perfectly with the feel of the song. Credit to all of them, but it blows my mind that Maynard writes his parts AFTER the songs are done. It seems impossible
You're missing a fair bit of what Justin's doing at the beginning of the song here but yeah, this is absoutely one of their best songs with some of the best bass moments. The gradual development with ebbs and flows within and between different sections is outstanding songwriting
Do all the deep cuts and stop as many times as you want, this is the best. I think you'd appreciate the lead-in song "Lost Keys" only because it's bass driven with a hypnotic phrasing. When this album dropped, they would open the shows with only Justin on stage playing extended versions of it as an intro. It would be cool to see your take on it.
13:35 starts a part where adam is in a different time sig than justin/danny and the rhythmic dissonance (as you referred to in another video). It is like an audio gyroscope whose passages align predictably in different places until the mathematics all add up and they converge. I never noticed this about their song structures until you pointed it out.
Always love the Tool reactions, Mark. They sent me down the rabbit hole of progressive music in my youth and were my favorite band until I discovered BTBAM. Which is my segue into.. we need more Dan Briggs love! Would love to see a reaction off of Parallax II, another monumental peak in their career. Either “Silent Flight Parliament”, “Melting City”, or “Lay your Ghosts to Rest” would be awesome. “Disease, Injury, Madness” off of The Great Misdirect also has a tasty bass solo and lots of other cool bass parts in it
Man, I don’t often often hear this one without the lead in between the nurse and doctor. It’s honestly one of my favourite Tool songs of all of their’s…likely my fave.
The vocals were meant to represent the stages of "the trip".....distorted and crazy at the peak, slowly but surely "coming down" until the end when he's sobered up and it's a full blitz TooL song and Maynard is shining!! Absolute genius!
I love your videos ! Will you be doing more TOOL ? You had mentioned you want to do the full album Fear Inoculum, I can't wait ! Please post more TOOL ! thanks !
"I did come from the age of listening to full albums ..." We lost something when we moved away from that. The length and format of an album is able to to evoke and convey so much more than an individual tune can, even a sprawling prog track. And an album can provide insightful context to a song. All while remaining enjoyable in it's entirety in a single session. I've always preferred listening to full albums over individual songs.
Wifey got me tickets for Feb in Fresno, can't wait I haven't seen them live since lateralus had tickets in 2020 before stuff got crazy but we couldn't line up a babysitter lol
If you think the vocal sounds are a thing to behold, just take a gander at the lyrics. I had a tough time with this one for long time cos of everything that's going on. Looked at the lyrics one day and realized it's all just one long dad joke and I was sold. So glad that I did that cos this is really one of their best.
Dude, I like your channel. You're pretty cool and junk. I'm also afflicted by the the bass epidemic. I love your reactions. I had a thought. Maybe it's cool, maybe not. I'd like to see what you're up to. Musically. Like, are you working on any projects? Doing any session work? Writing shit at home just for fun that no one will ever hear? You're an amazing player, I especially love your work with STS. That's right up my alley. Just curious. Maybe it would be fun. Anyways, nice work, dude. Be well. Keep slayin.
Hey! Discovered your channel recently. You're doing a great job! Though I'm not a musician myself, but it's interesting to listen. You precisely describe with words how I feel about TOOL songs. But there's another band, that I adore as much as TOOL. It's Killing Joke. Please, make video about them if you've got a chance!
I love your channel! When navigating TH-cam "j" goes back ten seconds and "l" forward ten secs. "," and "." to advance frames. It may make your life easier when rewinding.
If you want another deep cut, try Intension followed by Right in Two as they are sequenced on the 10,000 days album. The combo of the two are much more ethereal than your avg Tool song and Justin's parts are amazing.
I would advise anyone going to see Tool in concert to realize exactly what you just said as a preface. Maynard’s vocals are another instrument and he is not there to be the focus. An article once called them the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. They all have an equal part to play and you’re there for every piece of it.
the basslines in tool songs are absolutely brilliant and can be mega tricky with the timing and rhythm changes etc especially in Justin's work Justin is a beast of a bassist also Paul D'Amour has brilliant work too, the whole band is class music is amazing Danny Carey is elite on the drums too one of the best in the world imo
I always keep wondering how the bassist make out any of the riffs on the songs. I can, on the easy riffs or the ones that are distinctly mixed, make out like half the riffs. But with Tool it's just like when it's similar to guitar or very big clear lines I can make it out. Most of this I can't tell other than it sounds cool and something in the background probably helps a lot. I'm that guitarist who is trying to get some hang of good musical bass. Finally getting the hang of Tool got me into caring about the bass more, the guitars are cool, sure, but it's just there to support the drums and bass... So I listen to Tool for bass and drums despite being a guitarist. God damn, shit the bed. I really love this song for the whole theme and how the music supports that feel. The riffs are so catchy while being much like being in a trance. Great for meditating.
In my opinion, the best musical movement of all time is the back half of the 10,000 Days album. Lost Keys, Rosetta Stoned, Intension, and Right in Two.
I really like you channel. Can always use more Tool. It could be a good excuse to go back and listen to some of the back of the albums. People always love the holy Trinity..... Disposition, Reflection, and Triad.
That section that starts “overwhelmed as one would be” is one of the most amazing pieces of music ever!🤘🏻
One of their best climaxes 🎉😂

@@tonysambrano1229 If you're looking for this kind of deep cut from Tool I would suggest Third Eye, Pneuma and Disgustipated.
"overwhelmed as one would be placed in my position..." Must be one of the best pieces of music in Tool's whole catalog, it is too good
descriptive of anyones first experience listening to tool, lets be honest. Hell, it's still true of like what, 25 years later?
Man, this is so true. It’s 100% Tool, but more epic in a way. It’s the ultimate ‘release’ after a huge tension build up. I even get sort of sad when you get to ‘to write it down for all the world to see’ knowing this section is almost over. Rewind, repeat a couple of times and then move on 😅

Each Tool song give me beautiful goosebumps.
You’ve gotta do Wings for Marie/10,000 Days. It’s Justin’s magnum opus. His greatest work in my opinion.
The only song he needs to sit down to play. Has to concentrate so hard and for so long, standing isn't an option.
@@johnseward2934 I saw them play it on the 10,000 Days tour and it was unreal.

This one is still growing on me - but seemingly as with every Tool song, the more you listen to something the better it gets. Great video as always! ❤
