Many people consider Buddy Rich the greatest drummer of all time. But I can’t help but think that if Buddy Rich attempted to play this song, he would fail miserably. That isn’t a slight against Buddy Rich, it’s an indication of just how good Danny Carey truly is.

I think this song is about the my modern relationship with the discomfort with death unless it's filtered. I know that Maynard has a lot of themes surrounding death and the nature of consciousness of it. I always liked this song. Then COVID happened. I was just a guy working with old folks in a nursing home and they started dying. I stacked their bodies. I had to step on some of them. This song reminds me of those days. The confrontation with death is intrinsic to the human condition. It affirms you are alive. The complex mixture of guilt and power because you are the one alive to tend to the dead. I think this song is an attempt to cut through modern concepts. It feels like something trying to confront our relationship with tragedy and acknowledge that it's terrible and we shouldn't hide from it

The drums are actually a recording of Phil Selway playing the song live that they chopped up and spliced together to create the drum track. My guess is that the pans, effects and processing on the drums were a way to sort of cover up the splices and make them blend together better.
