In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Tool by listening to Rosetta Stoned. This song just keeps coming at you, with earthy riffs and rhythmic complexity...all while Maynard is spinning a fantastical tale of aliens near Area 51. This is a wild and amazing piece!

Another note on the title of the album is the lyric "10,000 days in the fire is long enough" in the song Wings for Marie. Maynard's mother, Judith Marie, suffered a stroke in 1976 which left her partially paralysed and with nerve pain until her death 27 years later.
Edit: Typo in the year
that song makes me cry every time I listen to it 😅 (I always listen to both parts)
Yep. Came here to say the same thing.
*1976
@@higgledypiggledycubledy8899 Same here. What a powerful tribute.
I've always seen 10,000 days as a rebuttal to the message of Judith by A Perfect Circle. Both songs discuss Maynard's mother Judith Marie and her battle with terminal sickness. While Judith is all about how foolish she is for remaining faithful despite her illness, Wings for Marie/10,000 Days is a tribute to her strength. "Fetch me the spirit the son and the father, tell them their pillar of faith as ascended." Judith looks at her faith a different way. "Oh so many ways for me to show you how your savior has abandoned you" and "He did this.
took all you had and left you this way. Still you pray, you never stray."
I feel Maynard needed to write a tribute to his mother after such a condemning, angry track he had described her in. He did this masterfully with 10,000 Days and it's one of my favorite examples of repentance and change. "Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance, burden of proof tossed upon non-believers. You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence.
Judith Marie, unconditional one."
I finally got to see them play Lost Keys / Rosetta Stoned at the Dallas show a couple weeks ago. My life is complete.
Man, I almost cried when I heard lost keys start...
@@beauwille2294same. Almost shit my pants
Lost keys too?? Lucky bastard! They just jumped into Rosetta stoned when I saw them recently.
Same dude. Bucket list song for me.
Yeah, we got it in Loveland, and it was amazing.
That section immediately after the guitar solo and buildup that starts with the “Overwhelmed as one would be…” is one of my all-time favorite Tool moments. Such a satisfying payoff to all the elements of the song that had been building from the beginning.
This is my favorite section in all of Tool's discography.
Justin's bassline in that with the changing intervals is one of my absolute favourite parts he's ever came up with! It's so simple but the deployment of it and its context after all the intense, locked in parts - it's so spacey and post-rock and other than a bit of chorus and stuff I LOVE how clean they keep it too!!
Been listening to this song for 18 years and it still gives me chills every single time
mine too my friend, mine too.
You all stole the words out of my mouth! I'm not alone!
The song is prefaced by "Lost Keys" which shows our character in an emergency room following this event that he's explaining in this song initially to a doctor. After explaining the event he is found to have suffered a psychotic episode by the doctor and sent to a psychiatric hospital where he continues to struggle with the memory of the event. In the end of the song he repeats, "but I forgot my pen, Shit the bed again" referencing that he could have been the hero of the story, saving humanity, but instead is now locked up in a psychiatric ward and unable to control his faculties or mind due possibly to psychosis, prevalent in Schizophrenia, or the medications given to him to treat the psychosis. And incredibly dark and well told story. Great work Tool!
Haha well said my friend 🇦🇺
psychosis from DMT
i think its a reference to all prophets which has no proof that god exists they all forgot the pen and died before proving that god exists that means shit the bed he is dead he shithimself
@@firatcantatarka671Exactly. Except shitting the bed means forget something or screwing up.
It could also be a retelling of a particularily intense trip on the drug DMT with which it's common (allegedly) to experience profound religious visions and stuff like meeting aliens or thinking you're now the messiah and saviour of mankind. And once the drug wears off you lose memory of what exactly happened, which is why the protagonist should have brought a pen. :) And maybe if you trip too hard you'll also end up shitting yourself quite literally.
My favorite Tool song. To me it has everything I want out of that band and has every single thing I love about them.
Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending. To write it down for all to see but
I forgot my pen.
That lyric still gives me massive goosebumps.
Doug would easily win in an air drumming contest. He's extremely accurate.
"Uncle Martin" is a reference to "My Favorite Martian" sitcom from the 60's. "Uncle Martin" was an alien disguised as a human.
"Dave" that floated away was one of Terrence McKenna's research team in the Amazon when they were exploring hallucinogens.
Saw them play this in concert a couple weeks back it was FUCKING SPECTACULAR couldn’t believe what I was witnessing🤯every bit of the show was outstanding and perfect(just like Rush)while sounding NOTHING like them the light show and visuals were amazing 🤘🖖✌️🥁🎸🎤🎸
MSG? I was there too, 100% agreed
My favorite thing with you is that you don't stop during the songs. You let it play out, and let yourself immerse. It's my major gripe with a lot of reaction influencers. Cheers.
I wish I could subscribe to your page 5 times! They played Rosetta Stoned in Hollywood, FL at Hard Rock. I went absolutely bezerk when I heard the beginning of the song!
John Kew did a drum cover of this, it’s nice that we get to see what it looks like. Even more impressive was the separate video where he broke it all down because he had a hard time figuring it out.
Short version: “What time signature is this?”
“Yes”
That's funny
He has the best drum covers on TH-cam. His The Grudge cover still blows my mind
You stole the words out of my mouth!
As skilled of a drummer when he said it took MONTHS to get it down blew my mind... but also didn't
An outrageously brilliant song. I adore that gloriously hypnotic bassline that kicks in around 10:48 & perfectly underpins the trippy solo.
"It's gotta be a drug trip."
He says on the first line that he's on X, DMT, and a sugar rush, doing yoga in the desert.
Drugs? I just heard a man who needs orange slices and needle spooning. NO DRUGS?
Wow nailed it on the head with 1 listen
I love how you always have the lyrics. And you also picked up on the premise of the song real quick.
"I think I would shit myself if this happened to me....high or not!" had me laughing out loud.
Loved this reaction. Well done. Thanks for explaining the song's context to those new fans who are likely lost otherwise.
Sure hope at least Lost Keys precedes it, extra credit for Lipan Conjuring in to Lost Keys in to Rosetta Stoned!! Rosetta needs at least Lost Keys for better context!
They did that too in concert
As they should!! LOL@@ZIG4ZAG20
I have been waiting for this reaction for literally years lmao. This is easily my favorite Tool song, I find I can't get into too much of their stuff but this song? This song is SO much fun and I love it so much
Straight up my favorite TOOL solo ever! The change between gravely and clean never ceases to bewilder me 11:05
I did not know that about the album title, but I met my wife at 27.5 years old and she is a massive Tool fan so it adds up!
I saw them perform this live last October. Like all their songs they did that night it was incredible. So impressive Maynard can pull off the intro live. I guess I should have figured he could do it but was jaw-dropping to witness in person.
This song is such a (pleasant) yet unrelenting attack on ones senses...
SO FUCKING GOOD...!!!!
Thank you for reacting, Doug...!!
Great reaction. Loved your breakdown at the end Doug! The lyrics make up so a big part of this song as well of course as the music. One of my top 5 in the TOOL discography.
So happy you got to this one. Tool's been playing it again this past/current tour, and it is a glorious thing to see again live. \m/ The Visuals they have during this song are really, REALLY good!
Greetings from Kansas City! Lost Keys/Roseta Stoned in one of my favorites. Spiral out.
Niner fan here. Pretty bummed, (congrats) but I get to see Tool tonight! So that helps soften the blow. I hope they play this song!!
They will. They have been playing it this tour. I saw them in Charlotte last month, they played it then. It's a good show, you'll enjoy it for sure.
Rock out!
In Fresno right!
Straight up musical genius and ART in the highest form! Glad to see so many people enjoying and appreciating it! Keep reacting to tool videos please! And APC
thanks to this song I know how to play a 5/8 over 3/4 polyrhthym
Oh man, I just saw them post this live for the first time the same day you posted this. It's even better live. In fact it was my favorite song of the night.
My all time favorite song by them. If you really wanna extrapolate the drums, check out John Kew’s drum cover of it. A ferocious drummer in his own right, he says it’s the hardest song by Tool he’s ever taken on.
One of my all time favourite songs! Great reaction as always, just a shame the sound quality (vocals especially) where muted 😢
I love Tool and them being as creative as they are, use the 10,000 Days title to first reference the orbit of Saturn, but also how astrologically it aligns to the 27 club myths ... whats not to love!
I've always figured the ppl of the 27 club had a rough return to Saturn. You're the only other person I know of that's made that connection.
...but is referring to the amount of time Maynard's mother lived with the effects of a stroke.
I love playing this song in my car. It also rocks at 4am when getting ready for work. Better than a cup of coffee. Ny the way,I have the same reaction everytime I play this song. Like a workout.
Saw them perform this live last week in Denver. An amazingly visual and audible experience!
This is one of Danny’s greatest moments hands down.
I love that part of listening to a Tool song is trying to figure out what’s going on. It’s such ordered chaos and I love it!
I moved to another country during my "Saturn returns" which also started my current career on IT..
Also many great things have happened since.
That bridge is magnificent.
Love your energy, It’s very conducive for Tool.
Thanks Doug. Been waiting for you to react to this one for a long time. Next time start listening from Lipan Conjuring, Lost keys and then Rosetta Stoned. Smooth continuation. Absolute masterpiece.
My favorite Tool song, such a banger. I love all of the references hidden in the lyrics.
"Lost Keys (blame Hofmann)" sets the context of this guy being brought in to the hospital, unable to speak and not knowing who he is, and at the end the doctor asks "tell me everything..." and then this track begins, wherein he definitely tells them everything. Also the beginning is still very frantic and under the influence and as it goes along he gets more and more lucid and aware of his real surroundings, as the psychedelics continue to wear off and "the message" he was meant to convey fades. "Deadhead chemistry" would indicate LSD (ala the Grateful Dead) but many think it is more like a DMT trip since there are references to self-evacuation which is not necessarily common with LSD. Although at least one of those references was indeed the other meaning of "catastrophic failure" as you correctly caught. But since Hofmann was a discoverer of LSD that strengthens the acid hypothesis.
One of the first phrases in Rosetta Stoned is 'yogi dmt' so..
Fantastic. Thank you for this.
Great review .. you are great 🤘🏻
So glad you did this song amazing! One of the best Tool songs ever! Nice work Doug, as always!!! :-)
I often find myself catching my breath after listening to Tool songs. Love your reactions!
..and he's done that vocal superintro live!!
I've been waiting for this one!
So hyped to these guys, seeing them at the end of May in Birmingham UK
I’ll be there too with my brother, my daughter and his daughter (with be the first time the girls have seen them). It’ll be fantastic as always, they get better every time.
my favorite tool song, i recently saw them in baltimore and this was on the setlist, i was instantly booked!!!
This song is an absolute pleasure to see live, saw them on the 31st of January
It’s been a long week. Finally got to listen to this beauty. Thanks Doug!!
If anyone needs any orange slices and fetal spooning, let me know. 😂😂
Just saw them play this in Dallas couple weeks ago and one of my favorites.. I was losing it for the entire show haha
Good to see you try and keep up with this one. It’s one of their Best.
was at work so I couldnt watch it right away but im glad you got to hear this one. To me its a masterpiece not only because of the epic instrumental, but also because its completely hilarious
They are just so good!
Saw them live last month and even though the venue was trash, Tool was amazin
They’re actually playing Rosetta Stoned on their current tour if you want to see it live.
Dang, I've known this album since it came out but just now i realized the word play behind title of this song (english is not my first language)
I remember I couldn't believe they played this when I saw them in '07, last day of school my junior year. I'd only recently gotten into em so the thought that a band could play a song as long and complicated as this one live, perfectly, seemed ridiculous lol. I'm so glad you went with this song and glad you liked it, I always love seeing a musician's reaction to hearing Tool songs for the first time!
You're awesome dude 😂. Love your informed and entertaining reactions!
Finally saw them in knoxville 2023 and man this song was visually vibrating.
Doug, I very much appreciate your reactions. As an amateur musician these reactions (yours and others) help me understand theory. I particularly like when you explain why an artist might go from V to vi to resolve back to I…or whatever applies for the song, that’s was just an examples.
They are the modern day Boston😂in regards to their album output and kinda how it’s so meticulously put together. Studio wizardry at its finest.
Saw it for the 1st time since 2007 in OKC on Feb 3rd. It was great. So good to heat it again after so long. 7th show
Hey Doug! You should react to Crystal Mounatin by the band death, one of the most influential bands of all time with a singer/guitar writer with a truly unique approach to music. I do think you have to get used to the vocals but I believe you’ll love how the song is played out and the overall musicianship within the song! And it’s not just thing song that sets itself apart from everything else. They have 7 studio albums and not a single one is a flop. Each album possessed something new and has a different theme. In the future, flesh and the power it holds in the sound of perseverance album should have a definite listen.
After hearing it somewhere else I listen to lipan conjuring, lost keys(blame Hoffman), and Rosetta Stoned as a trinity similar to the trinity. Lost keys is the opening context to Rosetta stoned.
One of my favorite songs of all time.
The Uncle Martin reference was a shout out to the TV series My Favorite Martian
Yeah... this is great 😊
Man this song is like a punch in the face
i've been a Tool fan for all 34 years and they never fail to deliver, regardless of the years between albums. for me, Lateralus is their masterpiece and is in my top 5 albums of all-time. it may be somewhat influenced by the fact that the first time i listened to it i was tripping balls on a beach in Thailand.
Respect & Peace ☘
12:45 easily one of my favorite tool moments, heard this song high as fuck and when this part dropped it just hit different. Love this band
This song is so wow
Lifts you up like a Child!
….Or drags you down like a stone
14:53 Peak comedy. You remind me of my dad, may he rest he peace.
Imagine MJK being sent this, “K dude, time for lyrics” 😂 Adam goes nuts in this, even Danny has said this & The Grudge are two of the hardest for him.
Congratulations, from one World Champion fan to another.
OMG I'm so happy to see this! Rosetta stoned is so underrated, as is the entire 10k album.
You should really give The Smile’s new album: Wall of Eyes a listen. The band is led by Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke and fellow guitarist/strings/composer Johnny Greenwood. It is a great listen, IMO!
Watching your reactions to these songs is such a joy Doug. I've loved this band for years. Your perspective as a composer really adds to my appreciation ❤🙏
This song omg
Needed to start with Lost Keys.
Just enjoy the video man
I was jaw dropped when they did this live!
Love this song
Saw it live last week. Had an out of body experience. Chemically induced. 🔥🔥🔥
I’ve seen Tool 8 times and this song is one of the highlights.
11:00 Squidward dance
One of Justin Chancellor's finest moment, his lines throughout the tracks are just perfect
Have you gone to see them live yet? Disregard, you answered my question at the very end. Jan26 /27thwas my 14th/15th show. They never disappoint
I saw tool back on October 2023 at power strip festival in Indio CA, it was the first time I saw them live, the show was ok but nothing out of the ordinary, however, the drummer performance was amazing
You go to Tool to listen to their music, what did you expect?
Great! Now i cant sleep...
FINALLY!
This Track also proves that Maynard ( Vocals) has a wicked sense of Humor!
15:26 "What a tune!" That about sums it up! 😅😅
Bless you Doug. Took that counting shit to the face and didn’t break a sweat.
Ain't NUTHIN like TOOL bro. No other band even comes close.
You get it sir_
Just saw this song live last night!! Was like the song abducted me
