  • How To Rope Climb (S-Hook and J-Hook) | Rope Climb 101 Tutorial
What used to be a staple of gym classes has become a common test of gymnastic skill, coordination, upper body endurance, and grip strength for Obstacle Course Races, Ninja Warrior and more but climbing the rope is achievable for nearly all skill levels. This video will teach you how to fix a few simple mistakes and learn how to climb a rope for beginners. This rope climb tutorial will go through the 2 most common techniques which are the S-Hook (S-Method) and the J-Hook (Wrap Around Method). The rope climb is an amazing achievement and a testament that the rope climb technique can overcome brute strength.

You want to learn how to climb the Rope? Either it be for an obstacle course, a new body weight method of training, or just any other twine related needs you will be able to climb that rope. The biggest misconception is that it takes a lot of upper body strength and it is a pulling obstacle. But if you do use proper technique nearly all of it can be done using your legs, even if you have the strength of a potato. The only prerequisite is that you're going to need it to be able to hang on to the Rope or a couple of seconds to lock in whatever technique you're doing, a rope like this one that is closer to the ground.

Well explained with good video techniques. I'm 67 and did the caterpillar in 3 scrunches after about 45 minutes practice. Now I get up there five times every gym visit. Thanks.

This video does a great job at explaining how to do the rope climbs with proper technique. Hopefully it helps me during my first spartan race this month :). Thanks

Spartan race is so much fun. If you were going to do it there, remember to try to get your leg as high as possible when starting. You might need to jump up to get a little bit of height. The ropes are going to be extremely muddy and very slippery at the bottom. Not at the top as most people fail this obstacle.
One thing I don’t mention is how the technique changes depending on the thickness of the rope and if it’s tied down at the bottom. The thicker the rope, the harder J-hook becomes.
More that the rope is tied down at the bottom making it tighter and act more like a pole than a rope, these techniques become less efficient. J-hook no longer works as you need the rope to be loosen enough to hook it around your foot. I would use the s-hook but with a small change. If you can kick your feet out into an L then it works. However, I would focus on squeezing a rope with your thighs as well. Imagining sliding down a fireman pole. The more the rope is tight and is acting like a pole, the more you’re gonna have to climb it like a pole instead of a rope.
Hopefully this helps and if you have any other questions I’d be happy to do my best.

You got this! Just remember a lot of it is getting used to the technique. With practice I am sure you will get it.

Thank you for the kind words. I do have a Facebook but I’m not as active on social media. I feel bad it makes it to easy to lose time in things that are important.
