    Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Review - 6 Month Update! The original Ram 1500 ecodiesel review did well, but I had not owned the truck for the long. After 6 months and approximately 5,000 miles I dive back into the 2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel for an updated review. Thanks to CJC Off Road, Towbin Dodge, and King Shocks for helping make this build possible.

      I have a 2016 with 122k miles at this date. 2469 hours driving with 24 hours idle time. I prefer the Mobil 1 oil. I run biobased fuel when available at Propel fuels or Love's truck stops. Mr Capson idled a lot in very cold weather. Plus drove slower than most people. I do use the Hot Shots secret products, as suggested by the late Mr Capson. I now do my own oil changes. The oil in the intake maybe related to overfilling the crankcase. Since the dipstick can be tricky to get a good reading. And the oil filter must be removed before the drain plug is reinstalledduring the oil change. The truck burns no oil, so running half a quart low prevents the oil in the intake issue.

    I got my wife same year and model I'm so jealous of the auto windshield wipers and auto highbeam headlights

    • @vjosephtrost
      @vjosephtrost 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Auto windshield wipers are nice. Auto highbeam is a little slow to switch to lowbeams. Other drivers will flash you just a little bit before computer switches to lowbeam only. Best feature is factory airbag suspension. Works great to hit "Entry/Exit" and drop down low so you can clean windshield, check oil, get to ATM keypad at bank drive through, etc. Also nice to set to low and back up under trailer using backup cam and then hit "OffRoad 2" and have truck lift up ball into trailer ballmount. Big complaint is that horn is activated through CAN bus network and takes some time to react. You can't do a quick toot-toot as that is too fast for computer to react to so you can only do a short obnoxious blast when driver in front of you is playing with phone and didn't see light turn green. And there is some chrome trim on center console surround. When the sun is at just the right angle, this trim reflects it into your eyes! I painted mine flat black.

    I have a 2015 Laramie EcoDiesel 4x4 It gets around 22 to 24 miles to the gallon driving around town. Maybe 27 Highway but the truck has a commercial tag I guess because of the weight of the extra running gear and I think it has a 355 rear the truck tows a 23 foot flats boat add around 14/15 miles to the gallon. and has 85000 miles no issues. One key fob went bad $250 to replace it and program. The only thing diesel is expensive and the oil changes doing it yourself still looking at 100$ 2gl and a filter @10,000mil Intervals x 8 $800 . Not counting rear differential and transfer case oil changes with Mopar oil and fuel filters.. maintenance is costly compared to gas.. but you're saving on mileage? but diesel is more expensive? Would I do it over again, not sure? Truck was pricey also 58000 out the door $48,000. Compared to a gas truck probably $38,000?

    My 2015 Big Horn Ecodiesel is currently at the dealer for a coolant engine smell. I had the EPA/Class Action Lawsuit software update back in June. The turbo lag is terrible and fuel mileage slipped to comply with the EPA. I haven’t submitted my paperwork for the $3,075 USD refund. The dealer service advisor contacted me and said they have no parts to repair the EGR cooler and trying different avenues to get it done.
    The latest recall is for engine fires. The new 2020 Ecodiesel is also experiencing terrible turbo lag. FCA will get stuck buying back vehicles now because the class action lawsuit had that part available for customers.

      @Kevinstrickland33 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The insulation is there for a reason, to keep the egr cooler nice and hot so it doesn't gum up the motor as much. Not a good idea to take it off

    • @seanfritz1355
      @seanfritz1355 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Kevinstrickland33 honestly it really doesn't matter. It still gums up the motor no matter what. I own a higher mile Ecodiesel. And also drive a CMV with 6.7 Cummins and same style SCR systems. It just causes it to completely gum up the end of the defuser and the intake. Also when towing it will keep more heat in the engine. Not good for it. What it really does its keep noise and vibration down. Nether are bad without it in place. Also it's called a EGR cooler, how cool is it really getting the exhaust by being wrapped in a 1/2 in of formed dense rubber foam.

      I have a 2016 EcoDiesel ... I've had it for 2 yrs and 5 months and just rolled over 26K miles with no issues until earlier this week. Oil changes every 7K miles (Rotella T6 + Mopar filter) and new Mopar fuel filter at 15K miles. No towing, just light duty driving. Truck turned on CEL while driving to Mopar Nats. On drive home, "Service Electronic Throttle Control" came on info display and truck went into limp mode. It was a long slow drive back to Pittsburgh. Truck would maintain 65 on the flats but speed would drop on any incline. Had to use flashers several times wile going 45 in a 70 with people wizzing by me at 80. Limped truck to dealer. Sat in there for 3 days getting new injectors, ECU firmware update and a few other pats under warranty. They had trouble getting truck to do a regen before returning to me. I don't think the issue is fixed ... I'm just good for another 20K miles. Service adviser recommends adding diesel fuel injector cleaner at every fill and changing fuel filter every 10K miles. I thought I might be the lucky ED owner but it seems like all ED Owners are doomed.

    • @55gopi
      @55gopi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Trost just a question, I think you're supposed to drive diesel engines hard at times for some reason is that maybe the problem, you drive too calm which caused some problems?

    • @vjosephtrost
      @vjosephtrost 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I said "light duty" in relation to load carrying and towing. I do floor it frequently merging into traffic and such. You do need to do regular highway driving with these ED's to give them a chance to perform a regen. If I only drive local trips for a long period, the info center display will request a highway drive so it can do a regen. A quick 30 min trip on the highway will clear that. The emission controls on these ED's just can't keep up with the soot generation. They are very clean but all the particulate builds up inside the engine and clogs things. The dealership mechanic mentioned that VM Motori did all the testing in the EU using EU formulated diesel which is a different blend than USA diesel. USA diesel doesn't burn as clean and causes excessive internal soot buildup. And the emissions controls include EGR which causes the intake manifold to soot up. It looks to me like these 3.0L ED's will always need lots of significant maintenance to clean soot and replace soot clogged sensors. That's if your cam gear doesn't slip ...

    Got 2 recalls on my 2016 6.7L .. ECM has to be replaced . Possibility it shorts out causing a stall. Reminds me of many years of Chrysler ECM issues. Brakes at 20k starting to noticeably fade. The other recall is transmission related for column shifted versions of the Ram. Apparently if you hold the brake pedal down with trans in Park too long it will possibly then shift out of gear without depressing the brake pedal.

      You may find this interesting. A Freedom of Information act was submitted to obtain information about the emissions cheat and who may have known about it. Around 2000 emails were disclosed. An individual searched those emails for knowledge of engine failure and found some incredible information. Not only was Dodge aware, they have detailed stats on these failure. Their emails show bearing failures on the Ecodiesel at 215 per month for the last few years. They have statistics on these failures increasing quarterly. Their "near term" fix was to increase oil viscosity to push the failure out of warranty.

      A diesels higher low rpm torque. Gives a more pleasant driving experience. I have a 2016 Ecodiesel Ram 1500 Quadcab 4x4. My wife used to have a 2014 3.6L Ram 1500 Crew Cab 4x4. Now she has a 2018 6.7L Ram 2500 Crew Cab 4x4. Pretty much the same fuel economy around town or on the highway. But the mountain hills are a totally different experience. Either truck takes the high mountain passes in cruise control with ease.

  • @alraguc
    @alraguc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I went with the hemi. The ecodeisel is over $4000 more than a hemi in the 1500 and over 100,000 miles you will save $3000 in fuel costs with the ecodeisel. It remember that maintenance every 10,000 miles is about $250 more with the ecodeisel and don't forget the cost of adding DEF fluid. In the wnd, the ecodeisel wont save you any money. If you tow a lot, the ecodeisel will provide noticeably more torque. That is the only benefit. I am extremely impressed with the current 5.7 hemi. I get over 21mpg highway and nearly 17 around town. My old 2005 got less than 17 and 14 highway and city.

      I’d rather have the diesel so I don’t have to refuel so often.. In the Australian outback it can be a very long distance between service stations. When towing a trailer going by tow test review figures, I’d have to refill 3 times to travel 1000Km . 300km per 98L tank is not feasibly when towing in Australia. At least with the eco diesel, it will be down to approximately 800km per tank on the hwy. I tested a hemi today, and I love the power, but I’m waiting for the diesel which should be on sale here in about 3-4 months.

    • @vjosephtrost
      @vjosephtrost 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm with you ... I had ETC limp mode at 26k miles and now I don't trust the truck. I haven't put 500 miles on the truck since it came back from repair. Oh and one of the replaced injectors was not properly installed and the motor has a squeak noise every time that injector fired. It had to go back in a second time to get that fixed. 5 days total at the dealer for repair across two visits ... no loaner. I had to drive my 1991 Dakota which is rusty but still runs fine. Dealer repaired the EcoDiesel under warranty but it's not "fixed" it's just a band-aide to get me some more miles until it goes into ETC limp mode again. I can't risk a trip going far away from home and having the truck go into limp mode requiring a hotel stay and several days of out of town downtime while dealer does another band-aide fix. Forget about towing my race car with this unreliable truck. it's too bad ... I just finished paying off the loan when I ran into trouble. Not a hiccup until 26K miles and limp mode returning from a trip three hours away from home. I had to put the flashers on whenever I hit a little uphill and the truck could only maintain 45 MPH while everyone else whizzed by me at 75! I too was looking at the GMC truck as a replacement. I've been brand loyal to Ram since 1997 but no more ... the EcoDiesel is not reliable. In fact, with all the EPA mandated pollution control (EGR, DPF, DEF-SCR), I don't think that any of the modern diesels are reliable. Clean air is important but it has killed the diesel. I'm glad I hung onto my no EGR, No DPF, No DEF 1997 Ram 2500 Cummins ... I'm going to rebuild that and use it as my rock solid tow vehicle. Anything from when they added DEF forward has issues.

      @@vjosephtrost yeah its funny the 4th time my ecodiesel broke down with the limp mode issue the dealer said one of my injectors was bad and damage to the clamp they had to cut it to remove. They didnt coverbit under warranty i had to fight with fca and then they denied the coverage also. I only got reimbursed my money because i wrote a letter to the top 3 people in the company telling them my frustrations with whay I went through with the truck and they sent me a check. I was grateful but its frustrating all the time i had to put in to get reimbursed on a broken truck that should have been covered under warranty

    • @JR-hy2mq
      @JR-hy2mq 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your right you wait until it breaks the next time. My 4th breakdown my wife was traveling with my kids they did the so called fix but 200 miles later it broke down again. FCA agreed to trailer it to my house since it was left at a dealer 10hrs away. I could not have my wife and kids stay in a hotel the 5 days they said they needed before they could look at it. They never shipped it fir me it just sat at the dealership. Like you said they didnt get us a rental either so we had to share our other car. I finally had to pay out of pocket $1400 to have my truck shipped the 10hrs. FCA even though they said they would pay to ship it that since i paid to ship it i didnt give them a chance and they could have gotten it to me in the same time so they wouldnt cover it. They had 10 days to shipbit and nothing first callbI make and I have a company to pick it up. I was out of pocket $1800 for the two breakdowns and shipping. 100,000 mile warranty one the truck. Again only reason i got refunded was because i emailed the three top people in Chrysler in USA. They had ine if their people call me heard my story and had a check to me in a week covering my $1800. FCA had denied any type of refund. It was a horrible experience until the very end.

      Mike Schnell what axle ratio do you have on yours? I was thinking about getting the EcoDiesel because I drive 75 miles round-trip and her it got good gas mileage. I currently have the 2016 Laramie sport edition with the Hemi and I get about 21-22 on the highway and 15 to 17 in the city if I just take her easy... 321 rear axle is what I have. Not hating but your dead wrong about the towing. a stock 2017 3.0 diesel is capable max of 9,030 lbs trailer weight, if it has the 3.92 gears. the 2017 1500 with a 5.7 an 3.92 gears, can pull max 10,640 lbs of trailer weight. that’s over 1500 lbs of a towing weight difference. these are dodges numbers from their website. only pointing this out Incase anyone takes that as facts, an goes an buys the 3.0 because it tows more when it doesn’t. with some aftermarket parts you can probably tow more then a 5.7..... but if the 5.7 upgrades also it will always tow more than the 3.0 but who knows I hear the 2019 ecodiesel is going in the rebel so they might beef it up

      it may have a higher tow cap. But the longevity of the diesel is why it is so appealing. Plus, the low end torque. It is a matter of what you need it for and preferences. That is all. Everything else will fall into place if you really just look at what are YOU using it for. In my case, when I buy, I wanted a diesel for the MPG and occasional towing an ATV, a small boat or utility trailer of less than 5k. Can i do that with a Hemi? yup Sure can. Can I do that with an f150 eco? yup. heck I can do that with a Jeep compass. But I WANT a diesel and I do not NEED a 1 ton. So this is a great idea. I think almost everyone on here has made some great points. Comes down to taste, usage and price.

    Have had same exact truck 1 year this past October. Last Friday night nov. 30 the engine grenaded. It spun a rod bearing #5 cylinder. No oil issues had only 3k on the oil change, all mopar filters. Engine had 46k on it 2016 model. I don’t trust them. A friend of mine’s mom has a Cherokee with the same engine, it jumped time and punched a hole in a piston with 25k miles on it. I loved the truck over all though right up until it grenaded. No sign it was coming, just happened.

      Did they warranty?

    • @Reid0225
      @Reid0225 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s at the dealer as we speak. Free Factory warranty was out at 36k, but I fortunately had bought an extended warranty on the day of purchase from FCA. It’s now covered until 100k. They are putting a long block in it now. Repairing was more costly than replacing the engine. I don’t think this is a common issue. However these engines do tend to jump time. I knew this before I purchased mine, figured I’d roll the dice on the valve train, didn’t get me but something else did.

      Jay Flat Out like the eco though. Actually it’s a 2006 f250 with approx 900wtq. 0-60 4.4sec but who’s bragging. Looking for a new vehicle to use as my new platform to build. Thinking eco but haven’t mDe a decision yet. Warranties are not a concern for me. Drove it like u stole it. F250 is putting sports cars in check one light at a time. Keep up the good work. Cheers!

      I wouldn't buy another EcoDiesel ... I thought that FCA had figured out the issues and fixed by 2016 model year but after failure at 2-1/2 yrs and 26K miles of light duty driving, I think "routine maintenance" on this truck will be an expensive injector replacement service every 20K or so miles. And you'll never know when it's going to go into limp mode when you're 4 hours from home. I had 200K miles on my '97 Ram 2500 Cummins with the only issue being killer dowel plug at 90K miles.

    • @pman9119
      @pman9119 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does weigh more and it has as much if not more torque than the HEMI. It just makes it at 2000 rpms instead of 4500. Where would you rather have it if you're towning?
