owned a lot of vehicles in my lifetime, 2 brands have given me nothing but headaches and stranded me along the highway more than a few times, Ford and GM/Chevy, both are junk brands, still have my 98 dakota that i bought new, it currently has 360,000 miles on it, still has original starter and alternator on it yet, only major work it has had is heater core/water pump replacement and stainless steel brake lines/hoses. I would trust my dakota to do a cross country trip more than any new ford/chevy
I love my 2016 Big Horn. Drove it 4900 miles on vacation last month, and it was getting on average 22 MPG on the highway. Can't complain about that with the HEMI.
5W20 motor oil is to thin for the 5.7 hemi. A high pressure oil pump (milodon or melling) will help keep enough oil at the top of the motor especially during idling so cam and lifters live on.
Scotty, I'm a RAM guy. I have a 2013 RAM 1500 4 X 4 Laramie Longhorn edition. I bought it used with 66K about 3 years ago. This truck had every option available at the time. It's as clean as they come. I do change the oil every 5K with full synthetic oil. It looks new and I just turned 100K. Runs great, looks great, I've towed our 30' trailer from state to state. Couldn't ask for a better truck!
I have the same truck in a 2014 version. Bought it new. Sitting at 158k on the clock. I’m still on the original brakes, and I just replaced the original battery. Pulling 21 MPG on the highway isn’t difficult. It’s been the best vehicle I’ve ever owned by a large margin. That Hemi/ZF drivetrain is a gem.
This is exactly the truck I just got. I'm the 2nd owner. I get 22+ on highway. I love it. Especially right now. Have you ever had the fluids tested in the tranny? I'm about to hit 150k
@@Noadvantage246 still 19mpg is not something to be sad about especially if your doing your states highway speed limit. I had a F-150 triton (Ford never again) I was averaging like 14 on the highway and I was babying the pedal also.
I owned a 2009 Jag XF Supercharged with the ZF transmission and it never skipped a beat. Currently own a 2015 Ram 1500 and just crossed 100k miles and she purrs
Drove my last hemi Ram 300,000 miles with 10,000 mile oil changes, never burned a drop or had a hemi tick. Traded for an Ecodiesel. 140,000 miles on the Ecodiesel, no problems. Great trucks, came from Toyotas, btw.
Was it all highway miles? If it was all highway that makes sense. Only time I've ever seen Rams go 300k without needing transmission is when they practically live on the interstate. If you put 75k Miles a year doing tons of interstate then you can hit 300k in 4 years and the truck will still seem new. Lot of miles but that's a totally different situation compared to if the truck was actually used like a truck and then got beat on and still made it to 300k and could be considered a mostly reliable truck tbh. The fact you did 10k intervals tells me you probably drove the vast majority of the time on the interstate because usually once you get off majority interstate driving they tell you not to do 10k intervals
Eco diesel is a decent engine if you get one that survives the first 50k miles. I have 175k on mine and got 21 mpg with Chrysler recall tune. Went to GDE and get 24-25 around the hills of TN. Flat Illinois I get 28-30. I change oil at 7500, Rotella T6.
Still driving my 2004 Dodge ram 1500 long bed quad cab, the transmission kicks hard and second and third it's amazing absolutely no engine leaks and no transmission leaks over 100k miles used to get 22 miles to gallon on the California freeways at 70 mph, but not anymore maybe 16 on the highway 10 in the city.
I had a 2002 town and country with a 3.8v6 hemi. Lasted me until 378k miles, still had life in it too when I junked it. Only issue was the suspension and I wanted something nicer
"Don't idle it" My buddy had a 2005 ram & he always use to shut off the engine when we were in a drive-thru with a long line up. Ik it was a gas hog too.
My dad owns a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 hemi and bought it in 2007 and he still owns owns it with 200k miles and he trashed the crap out of it never done any maintenance on it and still runs fine
Amen on that Hemi tick Scotty, I change my 6.4Ls oil in my scatpack every 3000 miles or 100 hours of operation and I make sure to run it as Dodge intended, hard and fast. Warm them up, run them hard, keep them adequately cooled and HEMIs are great engines.
I bought a new Ram 1500 4x4 in 2010. A guy crashed into it a month ago, and totaled it. I had 178k miles on it. Other than general maintenance, I only had two issues with it. I had to replace the alternator, and the fuel pump. Other than that, it was an absolutely wonderful truck. I was really hoping to hit 250k. But, it was parked in the wrong place at the wrong time.
My neighbor is an older gentleman and has 278000 miles on his he has a 2011. I asked him how he's made it last so long he said change your oil and your gaskets spark plugs and filters take care of it and it will take care of you.
I used to be a GM fan but with all their problems with their active fuel management I have to tell you that I'm leaning more towards Fiat Chrysler Ram being a better truck to own
Didnt Chrysler build it's own ZF gearbox production facility in the US? No doubt under license, but I thought they were built in USA now. I could be wrong. I'm down under so I could be upside down. :)
The nice thing about Scotty is that he can admit when he is wrong. And once again i completely agree that of you take care of something it will last a fairly long time
I just bought a 2023 Dodge Ram Classic 4x4 quad midnight express Hemi V8 Dimond Black Crystal,Great Price!! $45.300 plus tax, midnight express packages, Hemi $52.614 CND total cost plus Interest!! $460 Biweekly and that's not bad when the ""average car payment here in Ontario Canada Is $1192 monthly,,$596 Bi-weekly""" Any price for USA People.
Finally. Thank you Scotty for finally saying a Ram truck can be decent. They are not crappy like a Darts, or Fiats. They are not perfect, but good trucks if taken care of and maintained properly. I will renew my subscription.
Gas mileage really has improved. In the 60s I had a 3/4 ton Chevy with a 327 engine that got between 10 and 11 MPG on the highway. In the 70s I had a Mazda B1600 with a topper that got about 20 MPG on the highway. That Hemi Dodge getting 19 highway MPG is impressive.
I've had a 2016 , a 2018 and now a 2021 , all hemis' , they all got consistant 23 + mpg on the highway . .and yes , I check the mileage manually at fill ups .
I’m buying a 2001 5.9 magnum here soon with 261xxx on the clock, I wanna restore it and rework the motor, I’ve been told the 5.9 magnums are good IF taken care of, but trash if neglected
I love how he seems so excited by this truck with the mileage it has. Take care of it and it will return the favor. Scotty usually shuns on older Dodge or Mopar vehicles, but he appreciates a well cared for vehicle. Yeah, I'm going to look for one of these now...
I agree, take care of your vehicle it WILL last longer. My 1978 Dodge Diplomat lasted 14 years! 318 V8, I put 1.2 million miles on the engine before I sold it to a young man who was going to rebuild the engine + bodywork. Other than normal repairs, brakes tuneup Etc, the transmission rebuilt once.
I worked at a chrysler dealer as a trans tech and I can tell you with over 50 years experiance those zf transmissions are not so great.I just retired last year but all I did all day long was trouble shoot and repair those zf transmissions.I even worked with engineering to find out about ongoing issues with them. They had cases that would leak due to bad castings,c clutches that would not release right and cause a bad jerk and on and on.And the front drive 9 speeds were even worse.
I’m a JDM guy for life. However with great recent turnaround in reputation and solid quality trucks to market…. Ram is the only truck I’m actually considering buying next. I’m not convinced that new Tundra was worth the wait.
I'm the proud owner of a 2020 1500 Hemi Limited. She's the first RAM I've ever owned & 2 yrs into this now I don't ever see myself leaving the RAM brand! I can't recommend buying one enough!!! You won't be disappointed!
Ram has upped their game in reliability big time. I'm the 2nd owner of a 2014 Ram with the Pentastar V6. Bought it 3 yrs ago. It's now at 279K miles. Great mileage
I have this truck. The HEMI tick is caused by broken Exhaust Manifold bolts as well. Mine is white with black hood stripes. 2015 with 178k trouble free miles. Could I bring mine to you for a scan check like you did this one? I'm in Nashville..
A comedian pointed out they tell us not to run your ac at certain times to save on energy. If evry one switches to E V.s then they will say not to charge your cars at certain times and may even regulate how long you can charge it not to mention your electrical bill going up,and all that money you save on gas and oil will go directly to your electrical bill

It looks new and I just turned 100K. Runs great, looks great, I've towed our 30' trailer from state to state.
Couldn't ask for a better truck!
My 2013 has been flawless.
@@bettabegoodjr2104 Yes, did the tranny at 120k. It’s expensive but worth it.
I wish my transmission was good. 3rd or 4th gear is rough sometimes. Had the fluid flushed. 118k miles.
@@bettabegoodjr2104 How do you get 22 on the highway? I get like 19 😭
@@Noadvantage246 still 19mpg is not something to be sad about especially if your doing your states highway speed limit.
Great AU trailer hitch cover Scotty!! War Eagle!!
I have the same truck 2 wheel drive no problem. Great truck.
Drove my last hemi Ram 300,000 miles with 10,000 mile oil changes, never burned a drop or had a hemi tick. Traded for an Ecodiesel. 140,000 miles on the Ecodiesel, no problems. Great trucks, came from Toyotas, btw.
I go 9k to 10k on mine as well. No tick, no issues. Currently at 210k miles.
Hey don't get carried away lol, I love dodge as well, but I keep toyotas around as well.
Anyone know the year of this Ram truck? Scotty didn't say in the video. Anyhow, I absolutely love the Hemi orange paint job.
Looks to be 2014-2017. I believe those are the years that the orange color was offered for that generation.
@@Nigel__ Awesome, thanks.
What year is this ram?
"i love that sound". the look on Scotty's face... he meant that with everything.
2020 dodge ram 1500 classic hemi 5.7 synthetic every 5k sitting at 73000 runs like new bought it with 25 km on it daily driving.
I had a 2002 town and country with a 3.8v6 hemi. Lasted me until 378k miles, still had life in it too when I junked it. Only issue was the suspension and I wanted something nicer
3.3 and 3.8 minivan engines were super tough, chain motors, no timing belts in those. 300k plus miles, easy.
Scotty for President
"Don't idle it"
My buddy had a 2005 ram & he always use to shut off the engine when we were in a drive-thru with a long line up. Ik it was a gas hog too.
Trucks have changed a lot since 2005.
@@MRKNIGHT v8s are still gas hogs. Nothings changed with those.
Horsepower and displacement aside do you know whose full size truck has the worst fuel economy??. That would be the Toyota tundra with the iForce V8
@@ubeuonly one of the reasons they're so reliable

Disagree especially if you tow or haul things. Real men’s work.
My dad owns a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 hemi and bought it in 2007 and he still owns owns it with 200k miles and he trashed the crap out of it never done any maintenance on it and still runs fine
The 5.7 Hemi in the Dodge Charger Pursuit (police car) seems to have some camshaft issues. Probably because of long idle time.
Yeah our Durangos (Hemi) drink oil like there's no tomorrow. They do not like to idle.
Yep..the cam issue is super common with fleet vehicle, especially police vehicles as they idle almost as much as they drive.
Replace that AU with AL crimson tide!😂
Roll Damn Tide!!!!🐘🐘🐘🐘
I do like those hemi rams really that V8 engine is pretty good if you maintain it, I’d take it over an electric truck lol
If available in good condition tho
Sounds like a manbaby.
Not a real hemi bro, its just a magnum rebranded as Hemi for marketing scheme.
My 2004 ram is still going strong. 225.000 miles and never touched trans or motor.
I sold these, a lot of them would have the hemi tick when new....not a big deal thought
@Truckguy 6.7 a lot of guys have tried researched the hemi tick, and none have ever actually shown a correlation between the tick sound and failures.
I like the leaf blower in the background, Scotty don't care.
I used to be a GM fan but with all their problems with their active fuel management I have to tell you that I'm leaning more towards Fiat Chrysler Ram being a better truck to own
All poor choices.
Even worse than a gm
Better act soon because they have about a year left.
I have a 05 Ram Daytona in GoManGo. Has 157000 on it and looks brand new top and bottom. Oil changes every 3000 on the mark. Nuff Said
My dad bought a 95 Ram new and it's still going strong as a secondary vehicle (it gets like 12 MPG). But he's always taken great care of it.
Oh yeah my dads 2010 2500 is still going strong at 167k miles
Yep I have a 95 1500 4x4 with a 5.2 gets 20 hiway and about 12 Tru town still drives good and doesn't use oil
I got a 97 1500 reg cab with 266k. She still runs. Rockers are gone tho.
Lol 3 years older and the same mpg. 😂 It's good for some things
I got a 2018 ram with a Hemi 60k miles so far so good. Great driver.
Didnt Chrysler build it's own ZF gearbox production facility in the US? No doubt under license, but I thought they were built in USA now. I could be wrong. I'm down under so I could be upside down. :)
V6 vehicles get the transmission built by Chrysler. V8’s get the one actually built by ZF. Same design for both though.
2010 ram 1500 4.7v8 /201k miles
Im down one cylinder but still runs fine as a v7. Never had a problem oitaide of that. (Typical cam lifter issue)
My 2012 has. 158000, oil change between 3-500 miles getting ready to put in cam..
I had a 2015 Silverado with the new 5.3L that thing gave me 22mpg highway.
They actually put a good transmission in a damn Dodge. Im shocked...
Scotty please do a review on a 1970's Dodge W200 Power Wagon. In my oppinion the best looking pickup ever made!
Hardly ever see one of those.
I love those 70s era trucks 👍
Rams got power options comfort and reliability all for one of the best price points.
Hemi, synthetic oil only, and change frequently.
Love your content Scotty! Thank you!
Scotty plugs that OBD scanner in.
The OBD screen lights up that orange Dodge like a glowing jack o' lantern lmao 🎃🔥
Yeah....every tech that works on transmissions at every brand and dealership will tell you the same story. I know because I was one.
My 05 thunder road runs great 188000 miles. Absolutely love it.
Love the color on that Ram, it’s got that throwback look to the 70’s dodge pick up’s 😎
I have the 3.6. I change my oil around 3000 miles. They have rocker issues. I have 85k. I’m gonna change my other fluids soon.
The kid owns it now?
RIP to that 5.7.
The tick can also be exhaust leak which is very common on this truck, its not always a lifter.
I love my ram ,and was shocked u dogged the ram
I have this truck. The HEMI tick is caused by broken Exhaust Manifold bolts as well. Mine is white with black hood stripes. 2015 with 178k trouble free miles. Could I bring mine to you for a scan check like you did this one? I'm in Nashville..
🤮🤮🤮🤮
A comedian pointed out they tell us not to run your ac at certain times to save on energy. If evry one switches to E
V.s then they will say not to charge your cars at certain times and may even regulate how long you can charge it not to mention your electrical bill going up,and all that money you save on gas and oil will go directly to your electrical bill
Got the same truck, silver in color. Just over 170k on it and it still pulls like a team of horses. Great truck
Almost perfect. He needs to lose the Auburn emblem on the Clemson orange truck. 🤠
