The team that entered such glorious hits as Piece De Resistance, Death Warmed Up and Immortalis enter with Metalis, finally getting a robot that doesn't look entirely like a joke. The sieve on the top is pretty much the only nod to the hilarious messes that Team Death's robots of all had, especially looking at the Crusher-Crunch-Up later in this episode, it really doesn't look all that bad. That said, was the entire body a lifter? Difficult to tell if it was that or if the self righter was so ineffectual it pushed the actual chassis away. Anyway, I'll stop with the mockery - they get enough of that from a certain ponytailed youtuber. Team Death are active on the FRA forums and posted a really interesting breakdown of their experiences in previous wars, so that's worth a fan if you care about the old series.
The closest thing I had to a home team in the Bath boys, Ming is back and awkwardly rubbish as ever (except for Ming 2, that was awesome). It's difficult to hide the feeling like the Cotterell boys didn't want to be there on the show as much as their dad did, especially with the silly outfits. Alex and Oliver seem to have grown past mocking Arthur Chilcott's beard in S3. Fair play for them to be moving at the end - the cameras suspiciously stopped filming a lot of Ceros towards the end... was it limping?
I had to check again if The Scrapper was entered by the original Scrapper team who then entered with the two G.B.H. machines and Facet in Series 3, but nope, original entry. Very little to say about this one, but this wasn't a heat of shining robots for the most part. Same for Mega-Hurtz. The robot that's meaning John Reid needs to jump to GigaHertz for his next machine, it's an interesting design but just... not all that great when you get down to it? Oh well. It's the other two machines there's more to talk about.
Pinser, Mantis, and R.O.C.S. Because including Tiberius, the only robot to successfully copy Razer's crushing power (if not the dominance that robot had) would have utterly creamed everyone else in this match. Pinser was the only one that did any damage - as someone who doesn't like crusher bots much, that is a fantastic shot of the damage to ROCS, followed by dragging the machine, bleeding hydraulic fluid, across the arena. Mantis is my favourite of the three, it looks awesome in a very junkyard style, or Russian as the case may be. I doubt that was a real crusher as such, but the lifter-pincher is a good combo, as Complete Control has proved. I think Pinser was just slipping on hydraulic fluid there at the end, rather than being immobile, but again, this is a whiteboard match, it's not worth getting worked up over.
Scraptosaur is probably my favourite machine from the Dutch Wars and if the fight had gone on longer or it had been able to self right, it almost certainly would have won. St Agro isn't nearly as well driven as a lot of the other flippers in Series 7, but it's powerful and well designed. It took one lucky shot to put Scraptosaur on its' back, and they just didn't have the kick that a box flipper needs to get back on its' wheels. Funnily enough, both it and TMHWK were hit by the buoy, and the Scraptosaur team would later buy TMHWK to let their wives drive it in S9.
Revolution 2 is an immensely mocked machine here on youtube but lets' be honest, it was memorable compared to Revolution 3. And R3 worked! That first round was a pretty good indication of its' ability, but again, the link... it's tough to put in (I've tried!) but the boys from Kilbride have always been good sports and accepted they made a mistake. Excellent sportsmanship too - some roboteers would have seen an easy victory after their robot had needed a complete stripdown and just let the House Robots do the dirty work, but Ceros wanted a fight, and a fight they god damn got. For all the 'uselessness' of the House Robots, they add to the spectacle, the pantomime of the show and that's worth keeping them around for.
I think Ceros' problem was radio distance - notice how in the past two fights they've seemed to struggle at the far end of the arena more than when they're close to the control pods. A shame - the box flipper that Inertia Labs pioneered in the States never came to be a big thing over here. Ceros was the best attempt we had of a T-Minus/Toro/Matador/Bronco clone and arguably still is - all we have to rival it is Robo Savage after all. A worthy heat finalist and had they kept going, I think they'd have deserved a judges' decision.
If it seems like I'm harsh on St Agro, consider it tough love. St Agro is one of my favourite robots of all time, design wise. The double flipper is something I remember drawing on the back of my maths books in school, and I was hyped to see someone finally put it into action. The huge exposed wheels seem like a threat but arguably it's easier to lose a chunk of it and keep spinning rather than lose the whole thing or have it jammed up (reminds me of spinner killers in the states like Sewer Snake). My only problem is that it's not driven nearly as well as it needs to be to be a threat. A lucky semi-finalist, but such a good design. It's in good hands too now, as Maelstrom under Team Shock. Definitely a robot I want to fight on the live event if only to say I've done it.

Man, this episode could have a whole History Podcast about it, the Mediocrebots of Series 7 Heat H. Seems to be a bunch of OK to good bots, but not elite bots or shitbots either. You've got
-St. Agro, lost in the first round of their heat in Series 6, failed to qualify in 4 and 5
-Revolution 3, the first iteration failed to qualify for Series 5, second iteration lost in the first round of 6 and made it to round 2 of the Extreme 2 New Blood Championship
-Scraptosaur, which had experience in 2 Dutch series and the 3rd World Championship as well
-Mega Hurts LT, which had some funny bots in Series 2, 3, 6, and now 7
-Ming Dienasty, which probably deserves an episode all to itself
-Metalis, which Team Death also probably deserves an episode all to itself
The only real newcomer that didn't have a mediocre history was Ceros, which I could have sworn I saw somewhere else, but the wiki proves me wrong.

    The Crusher Crunch Up
All of those weren't really that good, but I liked Mantis the most, then Pinser, ROCS never was any good and the arms they added for self righting were just a, at least in my view, awful workaround... would've loved to see them rebuild that bot into something proper.
Mantis seemed to lack control at times, did well against ROCS which was pretty much screwed then, but later got messed up by Pinser.
If Pinser didn't break down, looked like the Flames caused damage? It probably would've won this.
The Hydraulic Fluid on Pinser's Tip was from ROCS, yet JP of course fails to get that...

How was Ming Dienasty's elimination controversial? It was armed with an absolutely rubbish weapon and did absolutely nothing in the entire bout. It should have been obvious that Ceros and Scraptosaur were the most obvious candidates to go through on a Judge's Decision.

I struggle to see why Ming was seeded. With the likes of the above robots and Disc-O-Inferno, I struggle to see what Ming did in the UK Wars to deserve it. I know it did well in something in Robot Wars Extreme Warriors (I think) but still... I think that there were other more eligible robots for that seeding that would have done better with it.

    • @r543Blitzsonic
