I just watched your video to relearn how to refill my bobbin, thanks for sharing. I still have my 50 year old Singer 758 Touch & Sew machine my husband bought for me when our eldest son 18 months old. It’s ran beautifully for all these years but I was having problems with it so I haven’t been able to use it for a long time. We have a sewing machine service man in our town who is really wonderful with new and old machines he did a thorough cleaning and has it running again like new.

Touch and throw was another saying from that era. They were good machines at first, but not very forgiving. As they say, not intuitive or user friendly. Big learning curve with no guardrails and a cliff to go over if you made a miscue. 😎
Interesting video. I've bought my Singer 758 in 1978, had it rebuilt about 10 years ago, but had never known what caused the occasional looping or nesting issue. It never bothered me much. When it happened I would just stop and clean the bobbin case and rethread the machine and got back to sewing in no time. Here all this time I thought a dirty bobbin case was the issue. I actually came here looking for a video on machine maintenance -- cleaning and oiling. I used to know how but I forgot.

Neither my daughter nor granddaughter knew how to fix the problem. My daughter didn't have the time to research the problem and my granddaughter is too young (8-yo). I agreed to take the machine and either repair it or pay to have it repaired. My first stop was to go online. I found your video quickly and learned that it was simply a threading problem. Today, I'm going to train my granddaughter how to do it based on your video. She can teach her mom. Thank you very much! We are in your debt. Richard.

I was not able to use this machine for a few years. I bought it used. The first project I made worked great, I must have accidentally threaded it correctly. But after that, no matter how hard I tried, it would loop. Thank you again

There are too many probabilities to speculate what could be the issue. I wish I could be of more assistance, but it would take hours to troubleshoot the possibilities by text. You might want to take it to a skilled Touch n Sew technician. (If you can find one) 😎
Hello I have model 778. I’ve watched your video about 10 times, I’m still getting “nesting” in the bobbin area. Presser foot is up, dual threads used, tension is at 4. Any other pointers to get the nesting to stop?
I can only assume that it’s not threaded correctly. Make sure the thread is clicked in on both sides of the guide on the top left leading edge where the spring is. When you have that assured, lower the presser foot and pull on the thread. It should feel like someone is holding on to it and won’t let go. If the bobbin is screwed together properly, and there’s a proper thread gap, it shouldn’t loop and jam with threads underneath.
On my 758 I get a very nice looking straight stitch but I notice a slight looping of the top thread on the bottom of the fabric when I am using the zig zag stitch. Tension is set at 5. Any ideas? Thank youl.
You might try loosening the bottom tension, via the screw on the bobbin case. Of course I’m assuming that your thread is all purpose/dual duty and not an oversized thread. And, I’m assuming that your machine is properly threaded, paying particular attention to the tension assembly with the check spring on the left, and the “L” shaped guide on the right. If narrowing the stitch width improves the look of the stitch on the bottom, it’s almost a certainty that the bottom tension is a little too tight. Turn that tiny screw to the left 1/4 turn then try it.
Hi there! I inherited my Oma’s Touch & Sew-II Singer Sewing machine, model 771 and am having the hardest time finding help solving a problem I created. I lifted the metal tongue piece out from underneath the metal plate because I have been used to removing the piece to place the bobbin. I now can’t figure out how to fit that piece back. Could you make a video showing me how on a similar model? Thanks!
That dial sets the pressure on your presser foot. Darn means there’s no pressure for free motion and darning. Max means there’s maximum pressure for feeding heavier fabrics. ( which I wouldn’t recommend unless you’ve changed out the old “exploding” original composite gears).😎
Hello, I had just bought this machine second hand after it had been serviced, I feel like all is well but I can't seem to wind the bobbin, the thread off my needle doesn't catch it. Any reason why?
Hello Randy, I have this machine, that was my dearest friend who’s a fashion designer, I’ve been sewing with this for over 30 years, I learn to fix it minor problems, just yesterday I finish a small project, and suddenly the machine started to get stock, I open the upper part, I cleaned it and oil it, It got better and it started to move well, everything moves but the bobbing doesn’t turn at all, any suggestions, the man who repair this and my other sewing machines closed on pandemic time, I’ll try to figure this one out of find a new place to take it. I appreciate much your videos , Thanks for your attention
If the hook stopped rotating around the bobbin case, either a hook drive gear has broken, or the timing belt has broken. Most likely, it’s the gear. It’s nonmetal and they always break eventually. The timing belts stretch and deteriorate, but seldom break. If the timing belt is still good, it’s not a big deal to replace all four composite gears. (4) If the timing belt is bad, and you need new gears, the cost of repairs will exceed the machines value. Remove the bottom cover and look underneath the bobbin area. If you have broken teeth on the gears, they will be readily viewable. Good luck 🍀.

Awesome Video Randy! Similar situation to Mackm1720, my mother-in-law passed away and left this model sewing machine to my wife. I'm pretty good with mechanical bits, but want to take your advice in earnest to get a real sewing machine repair person to take a look at it. Do you know anyone near Ithaca, NY (Syracuse, Rochester, Binghamton NY area)?

@@exhiblets the machines that have plastic parts will always have a key component that will fail to function eventually. The metal drive gear machines from the 60’s and earlier don’t have that failure issue. In my experience, it’s far better to invest your time and money into a proven successful outcome, as opposed to one that is a certain failure.
Randy - I have watched this video countless times, and I still think i'm stuck on the thread tension issue. So frustrating! I hear a click when "flossing" the string on the left side, but on the right side, I put the string in front, then behind the "L" lever thing, I'm not sure if i hear the click or not. or sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I try so hard to press the string down and hear a click, it breaks off. help? any tips?
Are you raising the presser foot lever. That is step one. When you say string, I hope you mean garment thread. It also has to be all purpose/dual duty thread and not anything oversized. You can’t use machine quilting thread etc. I’m not sure what your machines malfunction is. Is it looping underneath?
If your tension dial is set on 4, you don’t have a tension issue. If your machine is making a “bad stitch”, it could be many things other than tension.

I emptied the bobbin in order to practice the self-winding feature, but it's definitely something happening prior to that since the bobbin is not filling. And, when I do put the presser foot down and run some thread through it, the thread ends up with no stitching. It was working fine after the tuneup, but as soon as I tried to re-thread the machine, all went south. It would be much easier to take my machine in somewhere if it were not attached to a wooden table.
When you start sewing, you’ll have two threads that you hold to the rear, tightly, until you lock the first stitch. Once you’ve locked the first stitch, you can release them and away you go. If you have any threads remaining unaccounted for, there’s a problem.
Lower the presser foot and slide the top cover on from left to right as it makes contact on the left side. The springs will slip under the lip and when it goes all the way to the right, the bolt hole will line up for re-installing the screw fastener. Good luck 🍀
I got this with a beautiful table and I hate this machine it’s different from the 603 it’s got a pulley and more crap in it not worth me trying to fix if I was u I would but I don’t know how lol
Usually when I rebuild these machines, it’s for a customer who has a sentimental attachment because it was a beloved relative’s machine. I try to discourage rebuilding them, but some folks won’t be swayed. I just do what they request and they’re grateful to have it working like new. They don’t measure their happiness in dollars and I understand that. Thanks for watching.

I just went for the 401 in a card table /profile cabinet and the machine works amazing I can’t believe how quiet it is compared to my 603 and it feels faster idk if it is but the 758 has a 1 amp witch is good 👍 but the belt is cracked and it’s a mess the one I got lol
It is complicated. Before you expend patience and energy on it, make sure that the drive gears aren’t broken and that the timing belt is in good shape. Take the four fasteners off the bottom cover and take a peak. If everything looks good, put some oil on everything that slides, pivots, or rotates.( Don’t oil the gears or the belt directly) Watch some videos on threading, and winding the bobbin. I have some on my channel. It could give you some good service if everything checks out.😎

It needs a drop of oil underneath the lever. That should help. 😎

The most obvious solution is to make sure the flat side of the needle is facing to the back.
Make sure the needle is brand new, not bent or blunt.

okay so the problem i’m having with my machine is there’s already thread in the bottom part but it’s separated from the thread in my needle.

How do you put the top back on a singer model 758

Make sure that your buttonhole dial is turned to the end of function.
Make sure your zig zag width is on zero.
How do you tyrn it on?

It will turn but it gets hard and then goes so it’s trash to me I will save some stuff for my 603
If it turns then gets hard to turn, that is the classic indication that the timing belt is toast. It’s now a doorstop. LOL
