WHO KILLED WHO in Scream (1996) | Mapping out the Opening Scene

  • If you ever wanted to know who killed Casey Becker between Billy and Stu, this video will give you a detailed behind the scenes look and commentary on not only which ghostface killer did the deed, but also show you their perspectives during Scream's infamous Drew Barrymore starring opener.
    DISCLAIMER:
    I edited this video in mind to have the animated simulation play along with the scene in question, which had all the movements and positions on the map line up perfectly with the events on film. Unfortunately, the video was flagged for copyright, so the only way I could post this was by removing the clip. I do think that having the video play simultaneously with the movie enhances the experience, so if you own a copy of Scream at home, I recommend playing it along side. The movie should begin (Dimension logo) at approximately 7 seconds into the animation. I've made the animation available on my Patreon, with the side-by-side scene comparison, and can be viewed by joining the "Freddy Krueger" tier for $5 (Link at the bottom of the description). But since I want everyone to be able to see the video, it is available for free on my instagram account, if you don't mind watching it in such a small format.

    For more detailed information and photos of the house used in the opening scene, which I used to get a better idea of the layout to make this video: www.ghostface....
    As a huge fan of the Scream franchise, I have always been fascinated by the first film's opening scene. It's no secret that Wes Craven was still very much replaceable as the director when they started shooting, and he wanted to prove his worth to the production so he decided to film the opening scene first (which typically is not usual for movies to shoot scenes in order). After the executives saw the initial dailies from that scene, they knew they had something special with Wes Craven.
    A lesser director might have just shot this scene in a very straightforward, linear fashion, but Craven being the auteur he was, had laser precision attention to detail, and had so much more going on in that scene that was ever written or that we as an audience could ever comprehend. There was an entirely different set of actions taking place just outside of the house under the cover of darkness that didn't require any additional filming, but Craven was able to expertly paint a picture in our minds, and that is why this scene stands out as a paragon of his skill set, and the pinnacle of his career.
    I would also be remiss to not mention Patrick Lussier's editing, who does an outstanding job on the first three Scream movies, but especially in this scene. He and Craven worked wonderfully together to produce 13 minutes of nearly flawless real time cinema.
    I can't help as I watch this scene though, to always speculate on where the killers were outside of the house in relation to Casey Becker. She is essentially inside a fishbowl, with glass all around her, and we as the audience are on the inside with her, looking out. Of course I have my own theories, which you will discover in this video, but I was surprised to learn of how different every Scream fan's interpretation is of the events going on outside. Some people think only one of Billy Loomis or Stu Macher was there, while he tied Steve up to the chair and made the calls to Casey by himself. And there are some who think that only one killer is there, while the other is making the calls from a remote location. I of course believe they were both there, but the question still remains of who did what, and where were they?
    Also, who was the killer behind the mask who killed Casey? Who killed Steve? And how did they get her body up in that tree so fast? There are definitely clues that Wes Craven left behind to help us with figuring out and breaking down the events and actions of the opening scene. So look closely, and see if you can spot them all.

      I think Stu killed Casey for one reason and one reason only; His hand was shaking while holding the knife up after Casey took off his mask and he was fighting internally about finishing the job for a brief moment before stabbing her and angry grunting. I think this was his first real kill even though he was with Billy when Billy killed Maureen, Stu most likely just helped get rid of the body.
      The whole side window not being shattered could be a continuity problem/goof and the sound was inserted to explain how the killer got out so fast. I do think Billy went out to help hang her from the tree and gut her though.

      Always say it was Billy watching. and I think Stu killed her because when she lifted up the mask she recognized him and you know they dated so that would be Revenge. but I think it was in on it together. And when I say together. I mean I think Billy had her on the phone and stew killed her because it was a tall guy. but I watch the documentary on it which I'm sure we all did Stu never put on the costume at all through the movie Billy did that one time when he was going and standing behind Randy that was actually Billy but I'm sure you already knew that.

      Tbh for this scene I always thought the killer was Stu and the caller Billy because they did say while sitting by the fountain next day that Stu dated Casey until she dumped him for Steve.
      But then again Tatum also said that Stu was with her that night which would indicate that Billy either did the job solo or Stu got away from Tatum for a bit and called from Tatum's house.
      I mean the job could've been done before Stu went to Tatum's house as well because I don't remember seeing what time it was. So many possibilities lol

    The question of which door Ghostface was at was the same as the Friday the 13th question: because Ghostface never specified whether it was the franchise or the first movie they were talking about, Casey could've answered with either Jason or Pamela and still gotten it wrong.
    Stu admits later that they ask vague enough questions that you die either way.
    This is incredibly well done and bone-chilling, but also unintentionally hilarious since it has Stu getting knocked out by Casey and then almost getting caught when her parents do come home. But then, that's Scream in a nutshell.

    I always kind of had a feeling that it was Billy who murdered Casey. We can make a parallel with the camera shot of Billy raising his knife before stabbing Casey which may also be seen at the end of the movie where Billy raises his knife to stab Sidney before getting shot by Gale. I wonder if this was ever intentional.

    This was such a great breakdown but what always gets me is that Casey would have lived if she had ran for the woods when she first got out of the house. Neither knew where she was so by the time they realized, she would have been long gone. Two very minor things I would have done differently:
    1. I would have had a camera icon in the top-down view where the camera is in Scream, allowing someone who isn't watching along with Scream to see what is and isn't in the camera's FOV. You were talking about how Stu had to get in and out quickly, but to someone who hasn't seen Scream in a while, that's lost on me, because I have very little memory of where the camera was.
    2. I would have done more "Animations". Nothing extreme- just changing the victim's icon's rim colour to red when they get stabbed, or changing their icon to Greyscale when they die.
    Apart from that, 10/10. I would like more of these, please.

    This is precisely the way I figured it went down, but I always thought Stu was the one to kill Casey. It seemed so “poetic” that she’d recognize him, especially, and you can see the realization and hurt in her eyes in that little moment. This was a cool illustration. I’d actually love to see this for all the “who killed who” in these films. Well done.

    • @unclekarl5219
      @unclekarl5219 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always felt it to be more poetic that the “mastermind” of the killers was the one to kill Casey. The cinema language of the opening scene is to make it seem like it’s one near superhuman killer instead of two. So the first onscreen ghostface kill being Billy Loomis seems more fitting. And yeah Casey would recognise her Ex’s best friend

      There has been a fan theory for years that says there is a secret third killer in Scream 1 and this third killer has to be Roman Bridger from Scream 3. Since he is the mastermind of the whole Scream franchise and motivated Billy to commit the Woodsboro murders, he also has to be present at Casey's house
      so maybe he's the one helping Stu stab Steve or the one who speaks to Casey on the phone.
      But it wasn't confirmed in any of the sequels, so it's still a fan theory and you will probably never know if it's true.

    First of all, I love how much detail you put into this video!
    I think it's more likely that both Billy and Stu were downstairs the whole time. Stu randomly spinning around at just the right time to see Casey outside the window seems a bit too coincidental. I think it's more likely that Stu just happened to be standing in front of that window when Casey looked up while Billy was looking in his direction and saw Casey behind him, pointing her out. If Billy had been upstairs and heard their scuffle, it's more likely he would have run directly to find Stu first to know his status. For him to attack Casey as quickly as he did, he would have had to have her in his sight almost the entire time.

Moments after Steve is slashed he asks “which door am I at?” Which should be obvious that he’s at the patio door.. but even after the chair is thrown Casey doesn’t go for the front door. I always thought that was a give away that they are both there. The movie has two killers for this reason.

    This is what happened. Caseys chase was so chaotic that it was a matter of who got to her first. Stu got knocked out by the phone so Billy had to go get her. Stabbing and strangling is Billys MO so Billy stabbed, strangled, and wounded Casey. He could've finished her off but he didn't because she was meant for Stu. After wounding her Billy brought her to Stu where Stu finished her off by gutting (his MO) her. So yes Stu did kill Casey but not in a way that we all thought he did.
    As for recognizong the killer. She was shocked that it was a classmate and her ex's bestfriend. By then she figured out there were two killers so she knew Stu was involved.
    Another detail. When Billy decided to strangle her, he was strangling her till she passes out where he can bring her to Stu so he can kill her.
    When she was being dragged she you can see she mainly got stabbed on the sides. Meaning that Billy wounded her, brought her to Stu, and Stu delivered the fatal blow.

    • @ZackCherry
      @ZackCherry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! I'm happy to know it made sense. as for the "Hey" its more of a grunt which we hear right before the phone line goes dead. My friend thinks this is just him making another noise as he stabs her again, but to me it sounds like he is trying to get the other one's attention to come over and help him out. And logistically at this point with the amount of time they had left to hang her body and gut her, he wouldn't have had time to start stabbing her some more.

  • @dylanjamieson4300
    @dylanjamieson4300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Very well done. I've always had the thought that Casey and Stu broke up because Casey cheated with Steve therefore that's why Stu wanted them dead (and why I have believed that Stu killed them both). But this could also be plausible...
    Based on this animation (for my theory), what if Billy had sent Stu upstairs (as Stu had dated Casey, therefore have more knowledge of the house set up - and would be able to search the upstairs quickly) and Billy looked for Casey downstairs, and as Casey makes her way around the back of the house, Stu comes down the stairs, sees Billy on the floor, sees Casey outside near Steve and runs to get her tackling her. As for the breaking glass we hear that you mention at 13:00 that could be Billy on the inside breaking more glass on the window as he gets up. And when Billy sees the parents coming, he darts out of the back door to get to Casey's body and Stu (going through the door nearest Steve's body), and they both drag Casey's body to the swing, string her up and then dart away as Casey's mother comes near the front door.
    What do you think about that possibility, out of curiosity? (And thank you for suggesting I watch this breakdown of the opening scene)

    • @ZackCherry
      @ZackCherry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It could have been them swapped. I don't think there was much time to think on what to do as they were just panicking to find her. But from everything I've seen, it leads me to believe that Billy stabbed Casey. He seemed to be more so in control of the situation. Stu didn't have the greatest coping mechanism for bumps in the plan, ie Gale taking the gun at the end.

    • @markrobinson9394
      @markrobinson9394 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was Billy who killed Casey because of their kill methods. Billy stabs in a frantic rage motion (e.g. Principal Himbry) and strangles when his weapon is not available, while Stu slices and dices in an opportunistic attack (e.g. Kenny).
      More importantly, Stu would have been the one to get the first shot at killing Casey, so it would make sense that he was the Ghostface in the kitchen that got knocked out with the phone. If you look at the positioning of where Casey got tackled by Ghostface, it’s very clear that it’s not possible for Stu from the kitchen to get to her that quickly, so it must have been Billy who spotted her escaping and chased her down.

      I assumed that they were both involved too on my second viewing, based on three things. Firstly the last question of the game "which door am I at?" is a trick question and it wouldn't have mattered which door she picked. Secondly if Steve was big and played football it would probably take both of them to subdue him. Thirdly I think it would have taken two people to get Casey hanging up in that tree as quickly as they did. I assumed it was Billy on the phone and Stu was doing most of the heavy lifting. Besides revenge, I think another reason they picked Casey is because Stu would have had a pretty good idea of the layout of the house.

    • @ZackCherry
      @ZackCherry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. And I can't see Stu being able to draw a very good house layout for Billy. I don't know why I'm being so mean to Stu, haha. But I like to think he brought Billy to the house in the days preceding the murder (when nobody was home) just so they could do a dry run of it. It is a very complex scheme, with all the back and forth they've got going on. It would need to be rehearsed.

    I mean, I don't think Billy just layed upstairs, predending to be stabbed the whole time. What about him being the one creepy up behind Randy and then killing Kenny?
    And after that, putting Kenny on the Van, with Stus help. Than Billy might have put his costume into the closet, where sidney finds it later, and going back upstairs to make his final entrance as the wounded Billy?
    Especially lifting Kenny's corpse up on the Van made me think of them both working together in this hole situation. And also: who is the one stabbing Dewey and then doing this creepy police car scene? Also seems like a Billy thing.

    I think that it was Billy who *attacked* Casey but Stu was the one to finish her off. I completely agree that Billy was the one to strangle and stab Casey but think about it. Billy Stabs and Stu Slices.Billy Goes for the chest everytime whereas Stu's confirmed murders are on the torso and throat. Also Casey was alive until she was gutted and hanged and Disembowelment is what killed her and Disembowelment is Stu's M.O. Hence, Stu delivered Casey's last blow. Hence for me it goes like this - (FATALITY blows only)
    Maureen Prescott - Billy.
    Steven Orth - Stu.
    Casey Becker - Stu.
    Arthur Himbry - Billy.

    Billy didn’t kill Casey. It was confirmed by Kevin Williamson that Stu killed her

      Kevin was the writer, not the director.
      Wes planned the shots, so he had say over what details were put into them. Based on the killers’ MO, Stu killed Steve and got knocked out with the phone, then Billy chased down and killed Casey.

      Mark Robinson exactly, I’ve always thought as since I was a little kid, billy was the one who killed Casey. It only could have been billy, since he’s more aggressive and especially since he’s a sick fuck lmao. It would obviously make more sense that Stu would be the one who wanted to kill Steve ofc. Since he took Casey away from him. I totally agree with Zach’s statement. If you watch the the opening and watch this video at the same time, you even see it kinda goes with everything he stated. But, people gotta stop debating on who killed Casey, cuz it was 99% billy. Unless someone changes my mind, which will probably not gonna happen. That only could have been billy.

    I never thought about how the "which door am I at" was also a trick question since they were probably at both

    I was with you all the way up until Billy remained at the front and Stu stayed at the back. I think they switched places after her boyfriend was gutted. Billy always stabbed with both hands clenching the knife, Stu used a one-handed style. This would also make sense considering the action was controlled with the chair-throw in the back to get her to run out the front door.
    Also, Stu dated her and was dumped, so it would be an obvious choice for Stu to actually kill her himself.

      It's the inverse with the stabbing styles, actually.

    this is perfect. anyone who claims there was one killer there doesn’t get the brilliance of the line asking what door he’s at. there’s a killer at both doors.

      Thanks Arthur! I think this was the first and last time I do something like this. It was a lot of work, and I don't think any of the other movies warrant such a detailed visual breakdown, as no murder scene has ever been as calculated in its direction than this one.

    This is amazing and I'd say this is certainly entirely spot on, the only real part that I could add is that I like to imagine both of them being on the phone, you know how theres several hanging ups so yeh. Like when it's more looming and serious, more horror trivia based it's certainly Billy, but when it's more flirty or conedic, it gotta be my man Stu. Also especially the boyfriend remarks
