This was the last snare solo at I&E that was musical and had entertainment value... Usually the theme in these things are pretty weak, while it just becomes musical masturbation, but this solo was genuinely musical.
Mike here, or almost any DCI snare or multi champ would own most, and show up many of todays kit drummers on a hand vs hand basis. Granted a lot of kit drummers may have more/better 4 way control, when it comes down to hands only, the majority of these DCI titleists can't be beaten. Their precision, control, and execution are unparalleled.
A lot of people don’t realize how good these guys really are.. people used to be more impressed that I was on the Atlanta Falcons drum line at 19 years old than making the Phantom Regiment quad line at 17 years old.
I've always liked Mike's performance here. Good chops, pretty well written solo. But the thing that makes this performance is his body/head movements through out it all. Effing hilarious
They wear them when not in full uniform to get used to wearing them in full uniform; they cover the ends of the sleeves, so that the sticks don't get caught in the cuffs while they're playing. It's not really necessary until you get to this level of drumming. And it looks cool.
I would agree - even the past champions at some point had some expressiveness, but yet can't find anything other than dynamic or complete sound change (rim, shell, etc.) in terms of his musicianship.
I hate commenting in response to other peoples comments and I dont know that much about sound of snare drums but anyone that thinks the snare sounds bad cant base the judgement off this video, the sound on it doesnt seem to be from a snare mic but from the camera mic which is distorted by loud sounds.
@rattlinO0Osnares The genre does not dictate how rhythmically demanding you play. Barker's genius is his ability to play uniquely and energetically in a song.
I think people should expand their horizonts sometimes. Type in "Jim Kilpatrick(2)" and watch that solo... The Scottish pipe school is unbelievable. Jim plays on a level no one of these guys could keep up with - but they're still fantastic in their own right.
And to add.........as bman said...a lot of DCI guys go on to other pursuits...prime example is Jeff Queen...DCI titleist.....BLAST! lead performer. Tommy Igoe is another set guy with DCI roots. For a pretty good example of DCI guy(s) playing set, look up Walter Turner.... Cheers!
Don't worry cadaverr......these DCI guys are fully aware of Buddy.......quite a few drumset guys marched in DCI corps...Tommy Igoe marched Bridgemen for one. Even Neil Peart hints at some drum corps background.
it's disgusting to think that some people believe that Travis barker is te best at snare drum when there are godly men like this around. @_@ I'll NEVER be able to do that!
The longer I play drums and the more I learn... This level of drumming just gets more impressive. If you don't think this was amazing drumming you don't have a clue about drums.
I'm pretty sure ANY drummer knows Buddy Rich. Keep in mind though, anyone in DCI is either 21 or younger. Those that stick with it get even better after they age out. If they can do this stuff now, imagine where they could be 10 years from now.
first of, he was the Blue Devils center snare in 06. second, this is a marching snare drum solo, so dont compare it to kit players and 3rd dont say shit on this guy unless you can do it better, im not a big BD fan, but i still think they have amazing tallent
As incredible as guys like Casey and Pacheco are, I think you all DCI enthusiasts should direct yourselves to one drum set player and study his ideas and technique: Buddy Rich. Look for "buddy rich 1970", "buddy rich stick trick solo", "buddy rich boston pops" "buddy rich vs ed shaughnessy" "buddy rich solo de bateria" "buddy rich at the hague" "buddy rich on why he doesn't use match grip", "buddy rich two o' clock" and SO ON then shake your heads in disbelief. There will never be another him.
@pidog1 seriously? in my opinion, DCI is a professional activity that only the best and most ambitious musicians/athletes compete in on an international scale. these are some of the most talented drummers in the world, and DCI makes them strive for more. so dont say "if they make it in the music world" because i have more respect for this organization than any label or orchestra/band, regardless of how much they get paid (or have to pay in DCI's case). if you dont like it, then dont comment.
It's sad how true that is. But the good part of that (for me at least) is that most people listen to these mainstream bands with very average drummers, and think they are great. So when they see me play, they think I'm really amazing. When in reality(compared to those you listed)I'm not very good at all
@hotdogking if they dont think this is good....then yes apparently they dont have very much experience playing on a drum at all............dynamic levels, sound quality, chops are all included in this solo which is the reason he won. very few people can play at this level
I think Ive seen better blue devils vets solos that were harder in terms of physical chops. But yea this kid is pretty good and fun to watch unlike some soloists on snare.
Phantom Regiment seems to be using pearl pretty well now... Vanguard and Boston seem to have pretty good sounds on them too. Although, i'm not sure if boston uses the carbonply series. The NTS Style system? I've never heard of it. Care to elaborate?
when i was in band in 5th and 6th grade, the teacher told the drummers thats was the traditional way to drum i guess? "one question: why does he hold his stick with his left hand so strange?"
Thats probably because you can't hear most of the stuff coming out of the drum. I think this is better than Brohard's solo last year and Pancheco's as well. my personal opinion.
yes.......and his hair isn't bilaterally symmetrical either......sheesh he is human man, not machine. Either way, the solo smokes. When I have some time I am going to up some more!! Cheers!!
@pidog1............ The one thing positive I can say is that at least it is producing some young players with fairly good technique. Tommy Igoe..fairly good technique Billy Cobham..........fairly good technique Nat Barouch.......fairly good technique Scott Johnson.......fairly good technique
mabey (i dont know) but was 06 possibly a bonus year because of his age, allowing him to march at 22, but not compete at I&E because he was over the age?
@RickDawg527 I still stand by the fact that he was a huge innovator in pop punk drumming. Hundreds of kids emulate him today for a reason, and it's not the image. Show me a better-written drum part for Adam's Song or Aliens Exist and I'll change my mind.
i think it was brohard who won IE 05, was he still marching in 06 but didnt do I&E? i do renember casey being the center for the 06 show, i just thought i was wrong cause he stopped I&E in 05
HAHAHA loved it... makes me wish i chose Drumline over Hornline.. Almost haha. I want him to show this to all those people out there who think that they can play snare well..
he did in 07. I'm positive that he was on the snare line in 06, the year of this solo. I'm just curious as to why he didn't compete because he did in 05, and 06 was his last chance to...
@pidog1 I would like to know what type of background in percussion do you have. For one this is an snare drum that is tuned for outdoor use and the sound quality in the video is not the same. This is also a performance it would be no different than a rock drummer or jazz drummer doing a solo, they rock out and get into it you would see a drummset soloist play still it would not look good. Do you know what these kids go trough on summer tour it is rough but rewarding. PS he is the world champ OK
Everyone on youtube needs to stop reading the comments post your opinion about the video for the person who posted it. from that moment on dontread any of the comments. it doesnt matter what the hell someone else thinks, you comment for the person who posted the video not for the people who are watching the video if the person who posted the video disagres with you theyll ignore your comments. this way they dont have to scan through stupid arguments to find actual input into the videothey posted
Oh and by "these mainstream bands w/ average drummers" I mean like parker and that guy from my chemical romance, among others. In case anybody thought I meant the guy in the video.
Damn... The Remo Black/White max is not a custom head. Its the head almost every drum corps or marching band uses. looks like someone hasn't been drumming for very long! haha
travis barker is yoiur average ROCK drummer. plain and simple, the only thing that sets him apart from other ROCK drummers is his Mohawk, Tattoos, and his performing. Barker show lots of emotion when he plays and thats why ppl dig him so much, not really cuz of his drumming, cuz lets face it, I know PLENTY of drummers that play just as good or better than him. Its just his karisma that is unique.
DCI has some of the best musicians. It's astonishing how good this guy is. Keep it up!
This was the last snare solo at I&E that was musical and had entertainment value... Usually the theme in these things are pretty weak, while it just becomes musical masturbation, but this solo was genuinely musical.
Sickest ending to an I&E solo.
Great quality and great composition. My favorite modern day snare drum solo.
Mike here, or almost any DCI snare or multi champ would own most, and show up many of todays kit drummers on a hand vs hand basis.
Granted a lot of kit drummers may have more/better 4 way control, when it comes down to hands only, the majority of these DCI titleists can't be beaten.

That final shot is AWESOME.
Hey, this guy helps out the percussion at my school :D
I've always liked Mike's performance here.
Good chops, pretty well written solo. But the thing that makes this performance is his body/head movements through out it all. Effing hilarious
I played in RCC snareline with Mike a while back... funny guy. Props to him for DCI champ
that guy is my buddy. he used to teach at my school and his brother is one of my good friends. he's a pretty cool guy.
he's also a great graphic designer :]
the boy plays fast and clean. those are the hands of a champion
Starting 2:04 cracks me up! This is my favorite solo to watch. It's one of the only ones I've seen with a sense of humor.
CUZ IT LOOKS AWESOME, THATS WHY
truly skilled and not overly flashy...i like it
They wear them when not in full uniform to get used to wearing them in full uniform; they cover the ends of the sleeves, so that the sticks don't get caught in the cuffs while they're playing. It's not really necessary until you get to this level of drumming.
And it looks cool.

Cool!! I like his style and sound.

Amen to that, Jay.
Hey no biggie. We all get hairs up our derrieres at times. Keep on drummin, man. God bless you, too
@rattlinO0Osnares The genre does not dictate how rhythmically demanding you play. Barker's genius is his ability to play uniquely and energetically in a song.
Vic Firth is a percussion equipment manufacturer.
i still think the funniest snare solo is nick haydens 05 solo, his facial expressions are so funny lol
I think people should expand their horizonts sometimes. Type in "Jim Kilpatrick(2)" and watch that solo... The Scottish pipe school is unbelievable. Jim plays on a level no one of these guys could keep up with - but they're still fantastic in their own right.

For a pretty good example of DCI guy(s) playing set, look up Walter Turner....
Cheers!
Wow, I haven't seen a past champion who wasn't better than this guy. 2006 must've been a lackluster year for DCI.
I'll NEVER be able to do that!
It's funny how these people that post negative comments about Mike don't have the slightest idea about the material he is playing.
The longer I play drums and the more I learn... This level of drumming just gets more impressive. If you don't think this was amazing drumming you don't have a clue about drums.
man this is inspiration...
I'm pretty sure ANY drummer knows Buddy Rich. Keep in mind though, anyone in DCI is either 21 or younger. Those that stick with it get even better after they age out. If they can do this stuff now, imagine where they could be 10 years from now.
This guys great.
awesome chops. Left hand is perfect too.
I see this as interesting and skillful...of course lots of experience.
first of, he was the Blue Devils center snare in 06.
second, this is a marching snare drum solo, so dont compare it to kit players
and 3rd dont say shit on this guy unless you can do it better, im not a big BD fan, but i still think they have amazing tallent
There's not a TON more you can do with that, but you are right.
This guys nuts.
So Crisp.
dude the video was shot in a stage room wich is kinda big and the camera is way in the back thats y its kinda delaid...its called sound travel
He never marched anywhere. He was going to but decided to tour with the Aquabats.
It's sad how true that is. But the good part of that (for me at least) is that most people listen to these mainstream bands with very average drummers, and think they are great. So when they see me play, they think I'm really amazing. When in reality(compared to those you listed)I'm not very good at all

that was epic
I Like To Start Every Word In My Sentence With A Capital Letter Too!
I think Ive seen better blue devils vets solos that were harder in terms of physical chops. But yea this kid is pretty good and fun to watch unlike some soloists on snare.
not mad in the slightest, i have no desire to be a juggler, nor the worlds greatest show off :)
yes. yes, he is.
That actually seems probable considering the stories ive heard about mike.
keep in mind the guy was with the cadets the year prior.
they created drums for rythym too, and i heard rythym so its all good.
I wanna get one of those snares for my kit XD that'd be the most kick ass thing ever
Phantom Regiment seems to be using pearl pretty well now... Vanguard and Boston seem to have pretty good sounds on them too. Although, i'm not sure if boston uses the carbonply series.

1:44 you are the awesomest person ever
yes.......and his hair isn't bilaterally symmetrical either......sheesh he is human man, not machine.
Either way, the solo smokes.
When I have some time I am going to up some more!!
Cheers!!
@pidog1............ The one thing positive I can say is that at least it is producing some young players with fairly good technique.
Tommy Igoe..fairly good technique
Billy Cobham..........fairly good technique
Nat Barouch.......fairly good technique
Scott Johnson.......fairly good technique
mabey (i dont know) but was 06 possibly a bonus year because of his age, allowing him to march at 22, but not compete at I&E because he was over the age?
3:03 left hand dies from all the insanity for a bit
good job dude
Is Mike the one who does indoor floors... and clothe designs and what not?
@RickDawg527 I still stand by the fact that he was a huge innovator in pop punk drumming. Hundreds of kids emulate him today for a reason, and it's not the image. Show me a better-written drum part for Adam's Song or Aliens Exist and I'll change my mind.
This guy marched Cadets in 05 on the end...
i think it was brohard who won IE 05, was he still marching in 06 but didnt do I&E? i do renember casey being the center for the 06 show, i just thought i was wrong cause he stopped I&E in 05
i agree with u 100%
HAHAHA loved it... makes me wish i chose Drumline over Hornline.. Almost haha. I want him to show this to all those people out there who think that they can play snare well..
what the fuck?? mike bierek the artist? an amazing drummer too? geeezz
Gosh he has very quick hands for this kinda of work. I makes my head spin just watching hIm. Good stuff though.
he did in 07. I'm positive that he was on the snare line in 06, the year of this solo. I'm just curious as to why he didn't compete because he did in 05, and 06 was his last chance to...
holy shit our band directer's nickname is Jiffy Pop...
2:07-2:30 the most fun thing I've ever played on a drum...
barker can play snare fucking well there is some clips of him
They should really start having solos outside, so much echo.
beast mode
@pidog1 I would like to know what type of background in percussion do you have. For one this is an snare drum that is tuned for outdoor use and the sound quality in the video is not the same. you should give it a shot n say that again.
Everyone on youtube needs to stop reading the comments post your opinion about the video for the person who posted it. from that moment on dontread any of the comments. it doesnt matter what the hell someone else thinks, you comment for the person who posted the video not for the people who are watching the video if the person who posted the video disagres with you theyll ignore your comments. this way they dont have to scan through stupid arguments to find actual input into the videothey posted
yeah fair enough, but my point is that only drummers feel the need to do this kind of stuff, you don't get violinists tossing their bows in the air :P
The tuning was fine but the microphone was too far out of place. The audio from the documentary crews was great.
And I am not dumping on anyone.......but do the people that comment as such understand the whole concept of rudimental DCI drumming?
@owaaaa984 no... 05' was his one and only year... sucks too cuz tim jackson win practically every year he did I&e... casey had that potential
Oh and by "these mainstream bands w/ average drummers" I mean like parker and that guy from my chemical romance, among others. In case anybody thought I meant the guy in the video.
yup, cuz you know and you wrote the music for him right?
Damn... The Remo Black/White max is not a custom head. Its the head almost every drum corps or marching band uses.
looks like someone hasn't been drumming for very long! haha
Really? I thought i saw him in a picture from 05... why did he leave?
@hotdogking Don't forget billy cobham! lol
ok can anyone tell me what it means in these vid when that little box pops up and says your text here what the hell does that mean?
by the looks of them it looks like hannums there realy light and have a shorter head
your ending.. hahah so suspend lol.. great1!!
didn't casey brohard do a I&E?
travis barker is yoiur average ROCK drummer. plain and simple, the only thing that sets him apart from other ROCK drummers is his Mohawk, Tattoos, and his performing. lets see you do this
it's alright
wow............
hahaha!! nice!! Carmen at like 2:10
did casey brohard do a solo in 06?
Where do people get this idea? I don't understand.
