- In the town of Woodstock, Ontario, lived Tori Stafford. When she never returned home from school one day in 2009, a massive search began. It would, after some twists and turns, lead to a couple by the name of Michael Rafferty and Terri-Lynne McClintic.

I never saw a couple have a fight during a press conference.
It was a whole experience, felt really enriching for the perception of chsracter
Like, I understand both sides here... but wow... dude just *vents* on live camera about the way someone else is grieving... in public. It's sad, and it sucks... but also people all grieve in their own way, in their own time. He abandoned his daughter for the majority of her life and then has the gall to call out Tara who has been accused, hounded, and treated poorly, when she can't seemingly cry on command?
I liked it, momma held her own and daddy made a jackass of himself, I like the fact she wasnt going to let the media dictate her emotions simultaneously and CALMLY and articulately let the media know she wasnt going to stand for the media to conduct a court of public opinion based on her emotional response
That was like a comedy skit.
yeah he was obviously and rightfully really emotional but that doesn't mean you lash out at how others are dealing w/ the situation

If I was that cop I'd have immediately jumped down his throat for that. I'd have said, "Man that was quite the freudian slip. An honest, non guilty person wouldve at least mentioned how badly they felt for the victim, & that their own suffering was nothing compared to what she went through. But you? Your worst nightmare is all about how you cant drive around & do stuff anymore? Without so much as a THOUGHT for this little girl who was... Wow you truly have no empathy for anyone but yourself & I'm more sure then ever that you're the one I'm looking for.."
Hearing that come out of his mouth made me so angry!!! As a parent, heck as just a human being, I wish someone would take him out in jail!!!

The detective who brings Terri in at the end is Staff Sergeant Jim Smyth who got the killer colonel Russell Williams to confess. He's outstanding when interrogating these pieces of s**t, it's enjoyable to watch him at work.
That interrogation should be shown to every detective in training. Russell Williams strolled into that room thinking he was untouchable and the detective deflated him like a balloon.

While there can be no doubt Staff Sergeant Jim Smyth has had some stellar career moments, it should also be remembered that his interrogation method was highly criticised by one Judge in a case against alleged baby killer Cory Armishaw. Armishaw's confession, obtained by Smyth, was ruled inadmissible as it was judged that Smyth had violated the suspect's Charter Rights during the interrogation. As there was no other evidence against Armishaw, once the confession was ruled out, the prosecution was abandoned and Armishaw was acquitted.

As the father of a 22 year old daughter, also living in Ontario; I would just like to let Mr Rafferty know there wouldn’t be enough prisons or guards to save you. It would be my life long mission to find you and exact street justice properly. It would be slow, painful, and utterly joyful. I would then inform the proper authorities and do my time like a man, sleeping like a baby knowing that POS was held accountable.

Your response is exactly what goes through my head every time a child is hurt. I'd wait patiently for my revenge and when it happened it would be worth ever dam minute spent waiting. Anyone hurt my children they'd pay severely then I'd serve my time knowing I'd done right by my babies (even though they are now nearly adults? 💙💞
Do you mean killing him? Or just assault. It's not worth going to jail for, to kill him.. he's already locked up and out of society. Assault however, as long as you don't go too nuts and just inflict some pain.. i could get behind more.

The husband making it about him was so strange omfggggg she clearly said something like “theres MOTHERS who drive their kids into a lake and get on the camera crying and it was them the whole time” and the father just completely heard what he wanted to hear like wtf are you talking about sir…that was absolutely insane and uncalled for.

That was painful to watch him take it so personal. Living with such a person can quickly go toxic.

I think they had a lot of anger because getting of getting no answers and were so stressed, they just turned on each other because they had no place to aim it at.
It disgusts me how he’s sitting there in a corner with his blanket. Vulnerability is different. Tori was vulnerable. He’s weak and pathetic.
Just reached the part where he’s placing the blanket over him. It’s got my bp so high, that I’ll have to delay watching the ending for a few days.
It’s got me heated too, and the way he cries like a baby when he took a baby’s life is infuriating. Imagine how much tori was crying and he think we’re gonna feel bad for a grown man crying. Wel I don’t even really wanna call him a man, a little boy. I’ve never seen something so infuriating and the fact that he refused to even say anything is insane like dude you’ve been caught , you’re not leaving. You might as well let out the details because when the public finds out it’s gonna be 10X worse when the people in jail see him on the news for hurting a little girl. You know he’s not gonna be popular in there
Jim Smyth was truly a hero when he told him to get rid of his security blanket and act like a man.
Absolutely right. He's a sick *uck and his day will come and it won't be pretty. If you watch the full interview, one of the interviewer tells him to be a man and stop crying and get rid of his security blanket. JCS has a good take on this interview.
He was withdrawing from Oxycodone in that interrogation. I advise you watch the JCS video on this case, it shows most of his interrogation, and how after they realised he wasn't going to tell them anything they just started verbally attacking his character and to make him as uncomfortable as possible.
This is the type if case that makes you wish Dexter was real.

I just realized - the guy playing the role of “bad cop” that comes in around the 21:00 mark, is the same one that interrogated Russell Williams and brought that slime ball to justice. He’s probably one of the best communicators / detectives that there is.
He is really amazing. I recognized the voice.
Know what I hate about cases like this, besides the obvious? That it could’ve been stopped at any time, Terry claiming she was scared, forced etc etc, she went into Walmart for a period of time to collect items, which she could’ve stopped and called the police telling them her boyfriend had a kidnapped child, she didn’t have to coerce the child and walk with Tori, she could’ve told the police the morning before any of this happened and how he wanted to kidnap a child, Terry could’ve stopped this at any time, yet went through with it, never stopped to think, and then put on fake tears like she was the victim in all of this. It’s just rage inducing.
The detective that interrogated Terri Lynn and ultimately located Tori was Detective Jim Smyth who also conducted that spectacular interrogation on Russell Williams.

That dad just thinking she’s talking about him. They can’t stop fighting even when their daughter is missing.
And here's the kicker: the troglodyte only drew even more suspicion on himself by reacting in that manner, taking police attention away from the true culprits. What a disaster.

I was laughing at the composite sketch until I saw Terri-Lynn's face, it was actually quite accurate
I also let out a chuckle, but then my jaw dropped at how accurate it was.
There was another person of interest who the image looks like even more. In hindsight the image was made from an arrest photo of the person of interest, not exclusively of McClintic.

@@jamieangel3766 no, it was a friend of the mom Tara. I've racked my brain to think of her name but it eludes me atm. She moved away from the city after all the hubbub of people thinking it was her in the sketch. The sketch was right down to the hairline and way in which her hair grew from her hairline. It was obvious that the sketch was made, at least in part, from a photo of her and there were definitely similarities between her appearance and Terri-Lynne McClintic but the similarity to the friend was undeniably due to the photo and quite a few mentions of her name.

the fact that the parents were literally fighting on LIVE TV and making their daughter’s disappearance about THEMSELVES showed me all I needed to know about how poor Tori’s upbringing was. I haven’t felt that triggered before…it brought me RIGHT back to my childhood. I felt like I was literally seeing her toxic household on film….the aggression, the blaming, the selfishness, and the lack of any emotion other than pure rage. I grew up with addict parents, my mom on pills and my step dad an alcoholic and my heart BREAKS just imagining how this bright little girl felt everyday in her own home and during her own parents’ interactions with each other. As soon as I saw that interview….I KNEW what kind of parents they were. They were more focused on how THEY looked in the media than finding their own child…..disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.
Sorry about your childhood, that must have been hard. Hopefully you've used the struggles to be a better person because of it. I also have hard childhood. I've made lemon aid with it and because of my childhood I really like what I've become and use my unhappy memory's as just a scar that fades a little more each year.
Actually, most couples are completely torn apart by experiences like this and turn on each other. Most marriages and relationships dont survive losing à child. Maybe most dont straight up fight like that in front of cameras, but it happens behind closed doors. And all the mother was saying is people respond differently to truamatic stress (and for the record shutting down completely or only showing feelings privately is VERY common) but the dad jumping on her immediately and basically saying that the way he acts is the ONLY correct way to respond and her way isnt supporting their daughter was mean and factually wrong.
You cant, no one can, predict or control how they respond emotionally to truamatic stress. Trauma, shock, stress can make a person behave quite bizarrely and nonsensical and that is also normal. It can also take a long time for shock to wear off and just seconds to get effects from shock. The brain literally freaks out and doesnt function properly. Or see or think clearly. Not to mention, most of what people commonly believe about body language has been debunked by psychology and the FBI's behavioral analysis unit.
It was cruel what the father did. Esp publicly when the mother clearly was already being publicly judged, attacked, and accused.
But this happens to almost every couple in this situation, regardless of how solid and strong or dysfunctional it was before. This is a situation where emotions are so intense and all-consuming that each parent (even if they weren't the best parent(s) or if they are less attentive parents. Or if they are drug addicts or not- which is a treatable medical illness by the way, not à character flaw or moral weakness. It has nothing to do with love) is so consumed with their own pain, they cant even consider the others pain, let alone deal with it or offer them comfort and support. They are literally at their capacity for the pain they can handle. And parents also blame each other and hold resentments over the situation itself. This is almost all parents in situations like this, NOT just bad and selfish parents.

Americans really don't seem to understand that addiction and mental illness are both major health issues that require treatment just like cancer does, and have this idea that prison should be about vengeance, not a place where one undoes the damage done to the majority of prisoners since childhood, a place to break the chains of violence, giving help and education and a future, not just for themselves but for future generations.
Yes, some people are irredeemably evil, I have to have 5-7 surgeries a year for the past 5 years and for the foreseeable future because of one of them.
HOWEVER, the majority of prisoners have been let down by their country and the systems, never getting to mature past the broken children they are.
God, I was so pleased to see for once a woman getting the help she needed after doing terrible things, and then they threw her back in jail... it's so short sighted, she committed those crimes before her brain had developed, and been further stagnated by trauma and drugs. She could've used the 25 years before she gets out to become a functional and positive member of society, but because of a fathers guilt for neglecting his child in life, the chance of that has been greatly diminished. 😢

No wonder she loved butterflies. The freedom they had to have represented to her. That poor child. She deserved better. I wonder if she left with Terri Lynn because Terri feigned interest in her, something Tori likely craved. This is in no way saying Tori was at fault. They targeted whoever was easiest to lure. Tori, unfortunately, was the one they chose to reel in. It's so sad. She had such an awful death, and it saddens me to think she likely wondered if her mom would come save her, did ppl care she was missing, would she ever get away? I wish she had been able to know how much her community cared.

@Lux Aeterna Yes I know, I agree. I was putting myself into the position of the man, who while his wife was talking decides to interject as if what she is saying is somehow an attack on him. I interpreted that as incredibly insecure and weak minded. Of course, she's crazy as well, but I spoke from the perspective as a man trying to put myself in his shoes.
The second interrogator is the same guy that cracked Russell Williams.
Williams interrogation was a good watch, psychology wise.

We used to play in the bushes at Raffertys house growing up. He was on the opening corner of a cul de sac. I could throw a stone from my front porch and hit his. I walked past it everyday on my paper route. He'd invited me in his house and donated to heart and stroke when I was a kid. I was in 7th grade when this happened and it still haunts me. Her cousin was in my class. This destroyed our community. Still haunts us. May those bastards rot.

Terri-Lynne should never be released from prison ever. Shouldn’t even get the chance for parole. She clearly was apart of it all willingly. She went into Lowe’s to buy all of that stuff and looked like she was simply shopping for a DIY project. Just SICK!
It came out in court, she was a full and active participant in everything and Mike here left out of a ton of the gory details (for obvious reasons) but Terri was in there like Flynn whacking and stomping so many times she couldn't remember the number. She was even listening to violent rap music by Obie Trice at the time she abducted Tori that was about stomping someone to oblivion.

Always breaks my heart to see a child get punished for being naturally trusting. There's some real monsters in this world
Adults get punished 80% of the time for being to trusting. Ive had family and decade long friends screw me over. You have to talk to your kids early that the real monsters are does who look normal and trick you by distracting you with kindness. My school has a sheet of who's allowed to pick the child up and need written permission if anyone else does for that day.

Her mother is so right about the crying thing. Some people have an intellectual, constructive response to situations like this. Fact of the matter is that crying or prayers does jack shit in situations like this - the better you can focus, the better you can think, the better the chances of the situation having a good outcome. Even though she was a junkie, she came off as intelligent and composed, not as cold and not giving a shit. However I don't see how a nine year old isn't picked up from school when it ends, or put in some kind of daycare until the parents quit work in a community that big.
Still, she doesn't give a damn about that lovely little girl. Her complaints that people don't understand her is so lame. I doubt if anyone's even said that-- it's only day 1, isn't it? She may simply realize her behavior isn't quite right for the circumstances.

The father's behavior at the press conference says a lot about him.
Not really, they both were messed up and both had addiction problems and longstanding relationship issues. He was lashing out b/c his little girl was with her mother for the first time, first 24 hours, in a long time that she an her brother were removed from the ex-wife's home due to Tara's and her boyfriend's addiction issues. He had his own problems but put yourself in his shoes for a second. An unfit mother, actively using opioids is given her child back and the child is exposed to active drug use, drug dealers etc. and in 24 hours of being home she is abducted off the street in broad daylight b/c his ex-wife is high on the sofa, too out of it to pick the child up from school or even call the police to notify them the child was missing. The dad had every reason to be angry and lashing out. It was just a shame it happened in public. Tori was abducted at 3:30 and Tara never called the police. Not ever. Tara's mother called the police because Tara wouldn't and she didn't call until 6 or 6:30pm if memory serves. So a lot to be angry about.
Those two cops saluting Tori's hearse as it passed by made me bust out crying. Those cops, detectives, etc are the only people who ever cared about her... and she never lived to know it. 😢😢😢
What a coward, he even has the voice of a coward. You wanna just jump through the screen and choke him. He was just denied parole and I heard he was having a really hard time while incarcerated for what it’s worth.

If you're interested, the "Behavior Panel" here on TH-cam interviewed Jim Smyth recently.
They are 4 experts who analyze body language etc.
They had done a video on the Russell Williams interrogation and were so impressed with Smyth they decided to have him on.
The interview was excellent imho.
@@abelis644 yeah the Russel Williams video I specifically remember taking note of how he legit copies every movement “Russ” does to trick his mind into believing he’s an ally psychology
I like that he's being firm, but not aggressive. A lot of cops act like they need to scare the interviewee into confessing, which shock of shocks leads to a lot of false confessions. But this one in addressing the suspect in a way that lets them know that lying, one way or the other, would only get them into more trouble. He's not lying about having evidence he doesn't either (another "trick" that leads to false confessions). He's just sitting with him, laying down the facts, making it clear that the jig is up and letting him know that now's the time to do the right thing and that he should either seize it or face the consequences.

The parents arguing during an interview was so difficult to watch. Esp knowing they were innocent & knowing they'd soon be grieving their daughter. Imagine your child missing, wondering you'll ever see them again- if they're hurt etc, emotions high, not knowing who you can trust, not knowing if your former spouse & kid's father/mother could be behind your child being missing or not...all while being under a microscope and displayed to the world.

What do you think the difference is exactly? They're almost identical but the medium security prisons require less staff which keeps costs down. I don't see why we should be paying more to house a guy in maximum security when he's going to be in solitary confinement for the rest of his life anyway.

The next week, I was in so much grief that I was admitted to the psych ward of the hospital. Everyone is different. A person should not be judged by how much emotion they show in tragic circumstances.

I was so disgusted that swearing at my IPad as I watch the interrogation of Rafferty and literally laughing uncontrollably on your comment that Rafferty should stick your middle finger up his maple… Your use of famous Canadian affiliation (“Tim Horton” as well) is refreshing to say the least. At the end of your video, you had mentioned that Rafferty’s mom was sending money to him when he was at prison. I did some quick google search and found out that he was lying to his mom and the money was used for his own purpose such as buying junk and had nothing to do with protection. When his mom died, he started asking his grandmother and she died soon later. This horrible disgusting piece of s… is truly comparable to Paul Bernardo. Keep up the great work!

The Father's behavior was unacceptable. He happen's to be a cryer and the Mother is not. Don't judge a book by it's cover as we eventually found out. As a matter of fact, I thought he was involved simply because of his automatic defensive reaction to her explanation for not being visibly emotional. My condolences go out to all Tori's family and friends, I'm sure she is missed. I will never understand how someone can be given a life sentence with any chance of parole for such a horrific crime.

Yep. No matter her flaws she was absolutely 100% right on that. Whether or not one's weeping hysterically/crying for cameras or not doesn't mean one is guilty or innocent. I can't believe the father made it all about him during that press conference because it was obvious she wasn't referring to him, just her frustration at the expected response and the treatment she got.

Mental illness and grief and have been in therapy for almost 10 years, tori's mom probably felt guilty for not being able to cry infront of people but I have the same problem, epically my PTSD responses can seem cold when really later I cry in privacy, i really feel for tori's mom but also wish she pulled herself out of being guarded and got therapy

The fact a missing child isn’t enough for an amber alert is appalling. It could of saved her life.
How could it have saved her life? They took her, made her crouch down in the car so nobody could see her and then killed her. The alert wouldn’t have made a difference in this case. Also if they put out AMBER alerts too often (like for every child that’s missing, but usually turns up again the same day) people will pay less attention to it and it loses its urgency.

The amount of times I've seen adults look down at their phone, casually say "oh it's an amber alert" and then close the phone without looking is startling. An Amber alert may not have saved her, but it COULD have, that's what the og poster said, and it's true. Just because a chance of something helping is small, doesn't mean you don't use it, because then the chance of it helping is zero.

If I'm at a desk job in a room with no window for the next 8 hours or I'm on a day off and staying in, and an amber alert goes off for an area 200 miles away, wtf do you want me to do? You kinda have to be out and about to be able to spot stuff that's out of the ordinary on the road or in parking lots and likes. So yeah, it's not really fair to say no one cares. Most times amber alerts have had responses and that's what matters.

I live pretty close to Woodstock Ontario, I remember this case it was so sad. Woodstock has had its share of offenders even a serial killer by the name of Elizabeth Wettlaufer who was like a angel of death killing ppl in a nursing homes.. that would be a interesting story for you to tell.
