There was a case recently of a children’s mental health doctor who was caught with horrendous CP. It’s sad because it seem to me that the parents adopted that little girl because they had marital problems and thought that adopting would save their marriage once their marriage fell apart neither one of them wanted to take her with them so they came up with a crazy story. It happens a lot more often than people think. People foster and adopt children for all the wrong reasons. Some even do it because they like the attention and praise they get from people around them. Everyone around them looks up to them like they are a hero. You got to be a special type of evil to go along with adopting a child ESPECIALLY a child from overseas where there is so much paperwork, tests, qualifications, time and money that you have to put in in order for you to even be able to qualify to adopt children just for you to abandoned them or mistreat them. And all for what? That’s literally a work of a straight up narcissist right there.

@@liscatcat8756 You mean the prison sentences? I think they are very low for most kinds of violent crimes in general. I'm not sure, but I feel like it's similar in a lot of other EU countries, especially compared to the US. I kind of remember from school, there is a logic behind it which would take a longer time to explain, but I totally agree they should be more severe.
I think the logic usually goes more in a way of "protect the children to prevent the crimes on them" so the system develops more to help in that way and sentences become a second thought.

Brainwashing is a thing. Rotten mango covered a case of a guy creating a sex cult amongst highly educated teenagers in America. One of them, a psychology major at Harvard, reverted to a child like state. All of them stuck around for, I wanna say 10 years, it was something like that. All of them brainwashed into bizarre and abusive behaviour. And these were super intelligent people. It’s a wild story.

That's actually not surprising. In the late 1940s psychologists ran experiments to see what people would do when "just following orders". They found majority of people would do horrible/ lethal things to people if told to do them by someone with a position of authority. Turns out the average person is strongly conditioned to do what authority figures say..

@@markcarpenter6020 What I was just telling you is that “the results of that” ARE DISQUALIFIED. Because it turns out from the notes of the Milgram experiments made at the time, that they were not conducted rigorously. They did not come up to standard. The subjects actually knew a lot more about what was going on than the write-up admitted. Many simply assumed it was fake and there was no real electric shock because - they correctly presumed - experimental ethics would not permit it; and confirmed it to themselves by detecting the acted recording as a recorded act.
Stanford University’s prison experiment is also not as conclusive as it appears. It shows the culture of a certain class of American youth enculturated in an era of militaristic machismo (little boys in suburban 1950s USA) and let loose in a culture that was the inverse (1960s college counterculture).
Almost every Stanford volunteer was a young American male in a culture where frat-hazing was a norm, for whom interpersonal competitiveness / social dominance (rather than co-operation) was at this point all-encompassing, and who were already living in an all-male dorm environment, all subject to college hierarchies, and all affluent enough to volunteer long unpaid or low-paid hours over many days for an experiment. Many had been educated in very hierarchical private and some in all-male residential high school environments.
Does what happened reflect some norm that crosses age, class and culture? That is an important question. This is hardly a cross-section of global humanity.
As it happens I share your less than sunny view of how people behave, but I think it is very tightly bound to how specific cultures intersect with some personality types - and not others.
