Water hammer is never a good thing for plumbing 😁. Always go and turn your house's main shut off valve on and off at least once a year so in an emergency, it does not fail. Great how to That Fix It Guy.
This is a great advice. You always want to make sure that valve is working!

Don't you have an indoor valve to shut off water in the whole house? This is the street valve you are showing.
I know. They do not have a valve in the house. There is a ratty looking one in the ground right out side of the house. I dare not touch it.

Just a suggestion Try to Use a silicone non slip grip pad like the used to open tight jar lids, to hold it next time

Do this over the grass is not a good idea, once you drop something, it is very difficult to find.

If your going to do it DO IT RIGHT 300-500 series faucets come with a complete rebuild kit available at your local hardware store ,, it’ll have every washer and O rings needed

Excellent video, I have a couple of questions. I have the same setup you have and I wonder do you really need a water sill cock with the anti siphon vacuum breaker valve on top of the water valve? What's it's purpose? One more question, I have another outside water spigot identical to this and when I tighten the handle to turn the water off it just keeps turning and turning and turning. I have to find the right spot where water just barely drips then I added a two way splitter to where the water hose connects with shutoff valves on it to stop the water from dripping. Does that mean the entire piece needs to be replaced? Thank you for the video.
The vacuum breaker is so contaminated”dirty” water can’t get back in your drinking system.
Is the handle stripped where it connects to the stem? I am happy to try and help with these kinds thinks. I love it.

I have that same faucet mine is leaking out the top cap like running out thru the top versus the hose side any thoughts?
Fix It Guy: I need to change a worn-out exterior spigot which is probably original to the house (1965). It was installed tightly right up to the brick exterior. I can’t see behind it to determine if it’s a screw-on or soldered. I’m afraid to twist it, in case it’s soldered on. Without cutting into the wall on the inside of the house, is there anyway to tell if it’s soldered or a screw-on? Thanks!
I don't know of a way to tell without getting a look at it. A little drywall repair is cheaper than twisted up copper though. If you find a way please let me know.

Use silicone grease to lubricate parts not petroleum based products that will eat away at rubber or plastic parts.

Common screws should be illegal.
Yep they should totally switch to torques at the point. Could save a lot of headache I think.

You should use channel pier to hold the body of the valve when turn, because you don’t know how tight that will be.

I need to replace my faucet stem, the screw for the handle is striped out. How can I find out the type of stem without removing it? It’s sterling brand, house built in 1959
I have tried to look for a replacement stem for you. It may be hard to find. Not much information on sterling hose bibs.

I have the same faucet but it leaks from the handle only when the faucet is open. No leaks when the faucet is closed. Do you by any chance have another video for that specific repair?
Sounds like the packing is leaking. Did you try tightening up the packing nut? That is the first but right after the handle. If it is all the way tightened you may need to put some more packing in that area.
@@ThatFixItGuy I tightened it and that stopped the leak. Thanks !! It is almost all the way tightened, it may need packing sometime in the future if it leaks again.

Do I HAVE to shut the water off?
You want to shut the off for sure.
What about if its only leaking when you open the faucet. From top.
You may just need to replace the vacuum breaker which is that top piece. Make sure you know your manufacturer. That top piece should just pop off or screw off and then you can just replace that assembly in there.
If it is newer I would remove the top and check the seal. I have had seal not be on the whole way and caused the vacuum breaker to leak. I will add these to my video list.

Use a squared grommet at the very end ,,it WILL FORM FIT MUCH BETTER THAN THE GROMMET YOU USED
Great video. I noticed you don't use any solvents or WD-40 to help clean and loosen the parts, is there a reason behind that?
I typically don’t use any of those type of solvents or cleaners when dealing with potable water (drinking water). I’m sure some people do, I just don’t like introducing anything that could be harmful into the system. Thanks for the question.

I bought mine brand new and its dripping already. Also just crossed my mind that i can just buy a new one from home depot and take that washer and put it back and they wouldnt even know. 😅
Here's where working over a cloth, magnetic mat vs. grass would be better to keep track of any parts you dropped or took apart. Perhaps a small can of compressed air in your "arsenal," would be a good addition, to blow debris off parts?
I try to keep a towel with me for most under sink work. I should have pulled that out. I will have to look into a magnetic mat. I have not heard of one. Canned air would be great as well!

Mine leaks at the top when the water is on.
It is leaking fro the vacuum breaker then. If you know the manufacturer then you can get a rebuild for it. Super easy fix.
A little w d 40 helps

Hey Britt I though so too! I just did not want to take a chance with it.
That long screw may have messed up the threads and that why it was hard to remove. Not sure if putting the correct screw in would have helped.
U can’t turn it off at the meter unless your a plumber or the city…
It’s the water to your house. I can turn it off in an emergency situation. Who dictates why your emergency is?

When replacing the washer, the flat side goes against the connection so it’s flush. The numbers and letters should be on the outside. Per Richard ( This Old House)..
That (This Old House) Video you saw that on was shot on April fools Day! LOL! You always put the numbers and/or letters on the inside of the cup. You want the flat side of the washer on the outside towards the seat. I just watched their How to rebuild a hose spigot. Theirs was the same way only easier to change. Thank you for watching.

I don't remember if it was the flat head or not, but something did get it!
And the water stops dripping... drip drip drip... if it was fixed one you shouldn't of had to turn it so tight when you turned it off and two even after you turned it off super tight it shouldn't of still of been dripping afterwards.. I already know it's afrost proof spigot and will drain remaining water out of line but that sir was way too much water after it was shut off.. 🙃
