    Love how these "repair" guys show us how to work on a brand new valve. Let's have something about removing a packing nut from a hose bib that's 30 years old.

      Patient and a pick. Judicious use of tug , pull and smack on adjustable wrench to pull the stem out .

      Had the same problem with my 30 year old spigot...until I pried the ancient solidified packing rubber from the washer. It popped right out after that.

    Little note. When tightening the packing nut with new washer don't tighten as tight as you can get it. This way if it leaks in the future you can simply tighten a bit more to stop the packing leak.

    Your video was very helpful - thank you! I purchased a 3 year old home with Woodford faucets - some hot/cold and some just cold. I don't know what model numbers they are so I'm hoping the numbers are stamped on them somewhere. My question is "do you know where I can purchase the basic parts (e.g. valve seat rubber, rubber check valve and packing washer) for the Woodford faucets? You said "your local hardware store", but my local Home Depot and Lowes don't carry those specific parts.

    This guy knows plumbing parts terms. Nice to see an actual plumber teaching actual plumbing.
    I think my leak is from the corroded handle screw. Is that possible? The packing nut is reverse-thread and seems snug.

    • @fix135
      @fix135 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Likely it's the packing (seal) behind the packing nut. The handle screw doesn't hold back any water at all. The shaft that it screws into goes through the packing inside the packing nut. Hope I didn't confuse you too badly.

    Great demonstration, photography, sound, and explanation. On my original attempt I missed the step of re-engaging the tube with the handle prior to installing the packing...so the spigot leaked! Looking back on the other video I had viewed prior to my "repair," I noted that this step was glossed over a bit. But my bad, all the same. This one is going into my "save to watch later" bin, as I am certain I will be needing it again. Well done.

    My hose bib is obstructed? No water when turn on. No the water isn’t turned off somewhere in the house. This bib is only used in the summer to water the garden. I’ve always had problems getting water out of this bib. Turn on off several times or run a wire up into the bib would get the water flowing. Not this summer. I’ll follow your disassembly instructions to see if the house contractor inadvertently left debris in the water line.

  • @kennkid9912

    Dont use frost proof hose bibs. They are awful. Use a regular one ,A gate valve is the best Pitch the pipe down from your line turnoff inside. Open so all the water drains from the shutoff in the line outside.

    Can I replace the valve handle without turning off the water? I don't have a separate shutoff for outside and last time I turned off my mainline and turned it back on it leaked for days without me knowing. I'd have to get a pro out to fix the mainline because the City needs to shutoff the water to the house. Its a big thing... Want to fix the leak outside without all that hassel.

    Thanks for the great moustache and video. I am purchasing a home and inspection pointed out a leaking hose bib on the outside of the foundation is likely causing some mold inside the finished basement where the drywall meets the floor. I presume this means the hose bib leak is actually leaking inside and draining onto the floor causing this mold. Does that mean drywall needs to be removed, mold killed and cleaned up and that should be it to address this? Or can there be worse downstream effects?

    I had a similar model at my house the nozzle and vacuum valve were leaking, I replaced everything but the actual brass valve stem. Everything went works great but now when I put the spigot under pressure with a garden hose it leaks out of a small hole on the actual valve stem, not around the valve stem from the inside of the valve stem. It's really freaking me out hahah. Only thing I could think is on my model at the end the rubber seal is seated with a spring behind it.
