  • We begin the engine build for the 305. This engine was seized , (see previous two teardown video's) torn down and sent to the machine shop. The engine has been machined and will be assembled in a series of videos which will include installation and run in. As we assemble the engine the transmission will be rebuilt and the car will arrive in the near future

    I drove an ‘85 Firebird with a 305 like a pickup throughout the mountain west - where no Firebird was meant to go. Changed the fluids to spec. Still purrs at 350K. Most reliable motor I’ve owned.

      I had a ‘68 Firebird with a 389 (from GTO) and highjacker shocks in the back and used to take it to the mountains and rip through the fire access roads drifting, before the drifting was a thing. Thats what we get when we’re raised on Dukes of Hazard!!!

    I had a 1982 Blazer with a 305 and t the 700R4. Poor fuel economy, low vacuum, low power which caused shift cycling between D and OD. Not being the HiPo 305 it had smaller valves and larger combustion chambers. I got a TRW cam that was the second up from the stock 350 cam. 204/214 @0.050" and about 0.425" lift. Installed with a double roller timing set. That woke that 305 up and it drove like a dream. That cam was referred to as the RV grind.

    One question regarding measuring the bore diameter. You said it’s not necessary if you trust your machine shop and I had my 305 with 75k miles on it professionally cleaned and honed. Still I wanted to do and learn the complete thing. I used a very high grade micrometer but a low grade bore gauge from Amazon. I get some Out of Round and Taper readings that look not good and are exceeding the limits. My impression is that I don’t get accurate enough readings to really do the math. Would like to get your experience when it comes to measuring the bore with budget equipment. Thanks and greetings from 🇩🇪

    • @jaysgarage3616
      @jaysgarage3616  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is best to use good bore gauges and be familiar with them , remember it will get bigger at the top of the bore if there is no torque plate bolted to it. If you measure used engines they sometimes look questionable but so do rebuilt items quite often. If you are not sure you could always ask your machine shop as they have seen it and are near you. Are you going to use a cast or moly ring?

      @martinbusker5962 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @jaysgarage3616
      @jaysgarage3616  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good Morning , The piston will move and you will be able to rock it. You can look up your piston and see where the measurement is taken for their size and slowly insert into the bore with a .001 feeler gauge and the a .002 and so on and see what your clearance is or take to the machine shop and ask if they could assist you and check the piston to wall.

    • @jaysgarage3616
      @jaysgarage3616  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the ring end gap , looks like you have the correct rings , how are you installing the ring in the bore? If the ring is not perfectly straight (square) your numbers will be large. If you want to double check if your ring is square in the bore take some calipers and set to.... 1 inch and measure in say 8 spots , whether you are pushing the ring down with the caliper or carefully pulling the ring up make sure it is 1 inch all the way around and check again , if you are slightly tilted it will skew the reading , hope this helps!

    I got a question... so I bought an 82 Camaro with a 305 in it with 55K original miles on it. Its not leaking oil at the moment and started everytime. I did have a mech fuel pump fail and the alternator failed. But I was wondering, it really wasnt driven too much and it had been sitting in a garage for the past 17 years. Ran great then and now.. Does anyone think I should just replace all the gaskets in the motor? They are very likely all original. Like I said it did drive and doesnt leak but id have to say or wonder if the gaskets hate themselves right now, should I go for it and replace them or do you guys think it would be alright for the most part? Im trying to determine what I should do before winter comes here in Detroit. Should I just put it all back together and wait til next year? Or you think it would be fine? Probably a dumb question but im just curious what you guys would think?
