My go to daily is a 60 year old 36mm (ref 1018 in case you want 36mm in a vintage OP) silver dial OP, which I have worn for the last 30 years. The original four digit reference bracelet disintegrated from wear about eight years ago and so it was replaced by a NOS five digit Oyster - a significant improvement. For those of you who are not familiar with old Rolex bracelets, let's just say they were nothing like the bank vault quality of a modern six digit reference bracelet. Since I have had the watch it has done hundreds of km of pool swimming, plus been in the Aussie surf once or twice. It has been in lab and industrial sites all over the world, and bushwalked, and done the garden, and worked on cars, and... The watch looks amazing, not as new, but not far off. Given its simplicity, low profile, and monochrome presentation it is my dress watch for black tie events. So, I think your six digit reference Rolex watches will be just fine after two years, or even... five years... In fact, given the advances in Rolex engineering over the already proven to be superb Rolex four digit references, I think you guys can be looking a century plus timeliness...
exactly - 904L isn’t famous for being harder no more scratch resistant than 316L Rolex uses it because its appearance is almost like precious metal and it is significant resilient against chemicals.
I have a 2004 Sub Date that I wear daily, I even work on my car and motor cycle and it gets pretty grimy. I had it serviced twice now, both cost over 1k but when it comes back it looks and works like it is brand new.

What a stunningly rugged tool watch, not only can it confidently cruise through the rigors of office work, it can even handle the crushing G forces of a skinny yuppie's putt without breaking a sweat.
904l steel is actually softer then 316 316 is considered surgical-grade steel 904 is more corrosion-resistant than 316

904L is softer than 316L thus more easy to scratch. Rolex use 904L cos its looks better, more shiny and more corrosion resistance.

Interesting. I have a 4 year old Grand Seiko Snowflake which is also remarkably scratch free.
That wart/cyclops just kills the dial. Should’ve gone with the original Sub, good review otherwise.
