  • I like split pea soup. It's one of those soups that is so satisfying during the winter months. It's easy to make too, especially if you have an Instant Pot cooker. You can make this in a regular pot, but cooking time will be longer (I don't know how long). In the Instant Pot it cooks in 10 minutes after coming up to pressure, then let it depressurize naturally. Purée or enjoy chunky. It's a delicious soup either way. One note: It thickens a lot as it stands. Be prepared to add water or stock if you plan to serve it later.

And some people tell me my voice has a natural ASMR quality.

We used to stop at Anderson’s Split Pea Soup every time we’d drive to SoCal or Disneyland from the Bay Area when I was a kid. I’ll never forget how good it was!

Great job for a newbie! You really caught on quickly. Here’s a couple helpful hints to help you along the way. Set pot to sauté and wait for hot indicator to come on before adding oil. I usually swirl oil over bottom of pan before adding veggies. No real need to heat stock separately on stove. I add my homemade stock right out of the fridge. If you’ve got discoloration on bottom of pan from cooking beans, peas, or much of anything after washing pot put an inch or so of water in bottom and a few tablespoons of vinegar and let sit for awhile. Poor out vinegar and give pot a quick washing and drying and your pot will look like new. I love my IP.

Looks great Dennis. I was gifted one of those a few months ago and really love it. Soups and stocks work really well in it. Nothing like a one pot hardly no mess meal and easy clean up also. I always enjoy your videos and the hard work you put into them really shows

I always come back to this video to refresh my memory (for cooking time mainly) when making this soup.

Ha ha. I just got my mini IP two days ago and was enjoying a nice bowl of split pea 'n ham soup (made in my new IP!) while watching this video. Sooo good. Nothing like a comforting bowl of soup. Thanks! Btw, I put potatoes in mine. I'm a chunky soup kinda gal. Yum!

Waiting patiently for the yogurt episode! Seriously though, the soup looks delicious. I have the Instant Pot Ultra 60. Got it about a month ago and I just love it.

Two Christmasses ago I gave an Instant Pot to my daughter-in-law, as well as one to my best friend. I waited, and waited, and waited for one of them to tell me how they liked it and to share with me some recipes. Never happened. Finally, out of frustration, I bought one for myself. Actually cooking something in it waited until last week. Mind, this started Christmas of 2017 and now it is late January, 2019. So in looking for something to do with it, I ran across 2 bags of green split peas. Neither of the Instant Pot cookbooks address split pea soup, so I went on TH-cam and your site jumped out at me, especially since I had been impressed with a recipe from your site last year and had donated. So thanks for this recipe. I look forward to having delicious split pea soup very soon. BTW - Last year I donated. Tried to this year but your site doesn't believe where I live or my Zip Code, so I was not able to do so.

I’m delighted you have bought an Instant Pot, Denis. I recently got a great bargain on one too, and so far I absolutely love it. My main interest was in making yogurt. I have now made two batches of Greek yogurt, which was so good that I expect I will never need to buy yogurt again. I have also made a stew, a pasta dish, and a cheesecake (which turned out great). It also saves a lot of dishwashing! Of course there are things it does not do well, such as making things crisp. But I think it s a very valuable tool.

Excellent video Dennis. I've been curious about the Instant pots since I've seen them advertised. Looks like quite a multipurpose device with numerous functions. I have several slow cookers and I like them and use them a lot, but this looks much more versatile. I also love to make split pea soup in the winter, especially if I happen to have a nice ham bone in the freezer I've been saving for soup.
