We have this here in Atlantic Canada also with either ham or salt meat and dumplings! Great soup for fall and winter! TFS! 😆🇨🇦. I’ve cooked pea soup for over 30 years and have never found a rock or anything in the bag of dried peas!

Ohhh yes! A typical dutch recipe. But we use waaaay less water. We call it erwtensoep or Snert. We serve it with smoked sausage in it and on the side a piece of rye bread with mustard and cold bacon 😍🤤 its so yummm in fall/winter season

My grandmother would use the leftover ham and bone for split pea soup, but my grandfather used it to make his delicious pasta fagioli. Can't you just smell the soup cooking?? Yum!!

Split Pea with Ham, and more! Nice job and since Kroger doesn't sell Campbell's Split Pea with Ham anymore (and I'm not buying Progresso's version with green peas that are like chalk balls), I'm very glad to understand how easy it is to make my own Split Pea with Ham soup.

Hey Laura been watching your channel for years and you are amazing. My mom and I love to make soup on cold days like today since Hurricane Ian is keeping things a bit chilly up here. I’m in Lancaster City, PA so not far from you at all. Anyways when we make tomato soup and grilled cheese, we love to put the grilled cheese ripped up in our bowl then pour the soup over top and it’s potentially better than putting crackers in it, it’s SO GOOD you have to try it sometime. Lots of love from PA❤

The easy and affordable Dutch way is to use a pork trotter, smoked bacon and smoked sausages.
Soak the split peas with water the night before until they are generously covered. The next day, rinse them well in a sieve until the rinse water turns clear. Bring to the boil with plenty of water, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes. Then add the meat, except the smoked sausage. Skim the soup. Let it simmer for 1.5 hours. Then add the vegetables and let it simmer gently for another 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and add the smoked sausage and some finely chopped celery leaves just before serving. Eat a pancake for dessert.
Adding stock is absolutely not necessary! Just adding water is sufficient. Save that broth for another dish. The meat, vegetables and finally the smoked sausage provide enough flavor. It tastes even better the second day and is very practical for freezing. To give away or to comfort yourself on a rainy day.
I have always made it that way for my children and now also for my adult grandchildren, who love Grandma's pea soup.
A pig's trotter is extremely suitable and cheap for this preparation method. The bone gives strength to the soup and makes stock unnecessary.
Traditionally, we eat a pancake afterward. A complete meal.
Many greetings from the Netherlands, and as we say: "Smakelijk eten!".
