How to slow cook Ham & Bean Soup in an Instant Pot

  • I used my Instant Pot's "slow cook" function to soak and cook the dry beans at the same time. After seven hours I had a delicious soup to enjoy, with plenty left over to freeze and save for another day. The Instant Pot makes it easy. Put everything in the pot and set the cooking time. You could also make this soup in a crock pot.
See the full recipe on my web site at:
    www.white-trash-cooking.com/re...
And some people tell me my voice has a natural ASMR quality.

I'm getting several comments with links to adult content. You should know ALL my videos are set to "Hold all comments for review." No one sees them until I approve them. If I dislike a comment I "hide" the person from my channel. No one, including me, will ever see that person's comment. So don't waste your time spamming my channel. It accomplishes nothing. -Dennis

I was looking at other options of ham and beans and found yours. It says it was from a year ago and I must of missed it since I didn't have a thumb up on video.
    I noticed you haven't had a haircut for a while lol 😆🤣.
That is the longest I have ever seen it. It must of been cause of the lock down.
Thanks for a good smile Dennis 😃

Thanks Mark. I cut my own hair; I've been doing it since I was 20. I just decided to let it go for a while to see how it would look. I had long hair in college and when I had roles in Shakespeare plays I grew a full beard. Long hair gets in my face; so I decided to cut it back again. Thanks for the comment. I'm happy the weird hair amused some people. -Dennis

Another winner. I look forward to trying this soon. It's down to 45F today and I'm beginning to crave slow cooker meals. I used to own 2 of them and a couple of other "multi-pot" type appliances which all went to Goodwill after I got my IP. It never leaves the countertop since I use it for just about everything. Thanks Dennis.

Thanks Richard. I continue to prepare for winter soups. Next Sunday's video will be about caramelizing a ten-pound bag of onions from Costco. I wish I could keep my IP in the kitchen all the time (I store it out in the shed), but I need the space for doing cooking videos. My mobile home kitchen is typically small (but better than most because I live in a double-wide). Nonetheless, home sweet home. -Dennis

Hi Dennis, I make this often during the winter and fall months, but in a Dutch oven. Thanks for the tip about the salt. I heard that before but forgot it. I appreciate this divine soup. Kids make ham, then they bring the bone and leftover ham pieces and I make this. Yours is looking very good. Now cool weather, it’s more tastier. Take care.👍👍👍😀

What's with the curly hair? Salting beans when cooking sometimes makes them hard.
The ham has plenty of salt for cooking the beans.

The curly hair is because I haven't cut it. It's naturally curly. However, it's getting on my nerves. I keep sweeping it away from my face. I'll probably cut it soon. -Dennis

I think it depends upon the type of bean, but I’ve read that some kinds (red kidney for instance) require some amount of boiling to burn away some impurities/toxins. I’m not taking about having an upset stomach but getting legitimately (perhaps not life threatening) ill. There is no question that soaking isn’t required for depending on the cooking method (you can boil for a couple minutes then kill the heat and let them sit in the hot water for an hour or two). I still do it anyway even with my instant pot because I’ve had them require a (shorter) second pressure cook to reach optimal done-ness. I agree NEVER salt your beans while cooking. I even avoid adding ingredients containing salt until I know they are already done (learned that from Fergus Henderson). Slow cookers scare me, keeping food in the danger zone for too long. That being said I’d eat a bucket of that soup! Great video (sorry for the long comment)! Only 9.5 lbs to go!

I hadn't heard anything about toxins in beans, but I'm sure there is truth to it. I just watched a video in which the cook soaks her beans a minimum of 24 hours, 48 if possible, to reduce some sort of acid thingy in them. I'd like to try it once to see how it affects the texture. I actually prefer to soak dry beans overnight, drain and rinse well, and then use the pressure cook function on the IP to cook the beans for 20 to 30 minutes. This slow cook method worked well to keep the beans from breaking up. I will definitely do this again, maybe more than once, because I want to refine the recipe. A little tomato paste would work well I think. And fewer herbs. Thanks for the comment. -Dennis

@@MobileHomeGourmet your described plan with the IP is exactly what I do. Mine came with a cart of cook times for different beans, with times for soaked and unsoaked. Like I said I still soak but a couple times didn’t plan ahead so I went with it.

had 2 questions. first, did you end up having to buy a new car battery or did the charger work? my other question which applies to this wonderful recipe. it's a 2 parter.. what type of parsley do you like using? can you show off your potted garden, would love to learn how to garden in pots

    • @MobileHomeGourmet
      @MobileHomeGourmet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Trent. Thanks for asking. The charger worked. With the little driving I do, I might need to charge it occasionally, but it works okay. As for the herbs: The parsley was flat leaf (Italian) parsley. The potted garden is pots on my back deck, which I need to redo. The tree next to my deck shades it all day and the plants struggle to survive without enough sunlight. Maybe after I move them to a better location I'll show a photograph in my videos. Thanks for the suggestion. -Dennis
