Thanks for the info. I had the same problem with my Ariens mower after 15 hours. I looked at their youtube video and they say nothing about the problem you mention. I'm so thankful that I looked at yours and discovered that my pulley was out of alignment also. I have always found that the field people who actually work on the products know more than the engineers. Thanks for sharing ! Howard
I'm so glad this video helped you. That is the whole point of our channel, to help others out. Thank you so much for watching and commenting my friend. People like you make doing these videos worth the time.
You saved me a belt!! I checked my unit, which I purchased new in 2020. Has 47 hours on it. My pulleys were 1/2" out of alignment too. An Ikon XD. I made one small change to the procedure, since I am lazy. I used two small c-clamps to pull the belt away from the pulley and towards the rear edge, which has a nice bend to it. This allows you to temporarily hold the belt towards the rear edge long enough to unbolt the pulley, add the spacer, and reinstate everything. Thank you so much for identifying a problem that I never would have found, even after several drive belts. I'm now a subscriber!!
Awesome idea with the C clamps!!! Thanks for subscribing
Just dropped my mower off at an Ariens dealer. Showed your video to them and they had 2 other mowers at the same hours as I have. They’re gonna contact the company to address the problem and cover it under warranty. Thank you for your video!
Awesome thank you for sharing our video. Glad it helped.
Did they cover it under warranty? Mine is doing the same thing with 49 hours on engine still under warranty but they are telling me that it’s not covered under warranty.
Did this resolve the issue? I'm still having the same problem even after showing them the video and they made the pully adjustments.
@@jonphillips1234yes mine was covered 100% under warranty
@@bryantjones8039 mine is still running strong without issues. The pulley spacer seemed to be the only adjustment needed.
The short video demonstrates the knowledge, expertise and professionalism of the small engine mechanic. He's one of the top five best on youtube, in my opinion. I don't know how many TH-cam videos I have seen where there are basically naive novices, Pretending to be small engine mechanics. And so I've narrowed my TH-cam selection down to a few small engine mechanics. And this guy is certainly one of them. Thanks for another great video and repair!!! 👍👍👍
Thank you
If a man can make a new tool/socket during a tractor repair. Then he Really knows what he is doing. Awesome video..... Thanks.
I went thru two drive belts before I figured out that idler pulley was out of alignment! Your video was a great help I just stacked up 4 washers between the pulley and the frame and hopefully reinstalled a new drive belt for the last time. Next mower I buy will have much better access to the drive belt!
Instead of messing with the spring tensioner I used a pulley system and pulled the spring off the anchor, also used a pulley system to reattach the spring. Some 550 cord and a carabiner and a little elbow grease was my pulley system
My belt finally fell off yesterday after 120 hours! It did not break, and seems in good condition. I was able to fix the offset pully and get the belt back on with a lot of cussing and your video. I have had the mower since June 2018. It has performed wonderfully.
Thanks for the tip. I can't believe this got by Ariens engineers, assemblers and their quality inspectors.
Thanks T Bone! My Ariel’s is 3 years old and the drive belt just shredded and snapped. I watched the guy from Ariel’s replace the belt on a brand new mower, and then I watched yours. You were exactly right about the two pulley’s that didn’t line up. Well now mine do, thanks to you.
Wanted to update you on the servicing as well. They fixed the pulley just as you described and replaced the belt. It was all free of charge covered by warranty. Hope everyone else gets the fix they need. Thanks again!
That is AWESOME glad it helped. The manufacturer and that dealership needs to send me a check. Thanks so much for letting me know.
I agree 100% the fact that they missed this problem and even the technicians repairing it learned from your video speaks volume to your work. I vote check!💵💵💵
Have over 50 hours on the replaced belt and it is still going strong ! Thanks again for the tip.
I got exactly 200 hours on my drive belt my pulley are also out of line I'll be fixing that when I replace the belt
Mine had this issue but the belt would slip off randomly. Of course their response was to haul it to a mechanic to look at it as it couldn't be their fault of course. Thanks for making this to fix their issue!
Just wanted to thank you for posting this video. I struggled with my belt for 2 years, after watching your video I was able to fix the problem once and for all.
Thanks again, I have subscribed to your channel and will be watching more of your videos.
Have a good one!
That's great, I'm so glad it helped someone. Thank you so much my friend
Looks like I'll be doing this pulley modification and changing the belt since the drive belt just blew with only 11 hours on it! They should really put out a recall. Thanks a million for finding a fix for this design flaw!!! You made a subscriber out of me.
Glad it helped you my friend. Thank you for subscribing.
Wow!!! Thank you for share the information about the Arien zero turn and I just purchased this Mower last year and my belt kept breaking, I watched this video and did what you stated my belt has not broken at this time.
Thank you for Information
Awesome Glad it helped you my friend. Thanks for watching.
You Right the Engineer did Mess up Ariens need to watch your video and Pay you for Solve problem because there Video doesn’t solve any problem
This is a definite issue that I apreciate you making this video. With the issue behind me my Ikon 52 has been great after installing a shock absorbing seat im very happy with it
Hello, I have this model as well and mine is in perfect alignment. I purchased my Ariens last July 2021, it now has 14.1 hours on it, and it has never had this issue. Thank you for making us aware of this problem, I am usually not this lucky.
Thank you. Not all of these have this issue but please check yours. Now if it has a problem now you know how to repair it.
Wow,been working on it since Friday, watched your video and bang, fixed it in 30 mins, thanks excellent video!!that's a flaw that should not be there,I hope they fixed that.
Great!! I'm so glad our video helped you. Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend.
Man, oh man. Thank you, thank you. With Amazon and your detailed video I can get this accomplished myself at my house. I do not need to take my zero turn anywhere. I’m not a mechanic, but I’m handy. Thanks for the help.
Thanks from down under. I just had to replace the drive belt on my 42" Gravely after a few years. Sure enough pulleys were not in alignment. Just happened to have a spacer lying around doing nothing, so fitted it and thanks to your video and the aligned pulleys I'm sure I will get a lot more life out the new belt.
Great, glad it helped you out my friend
I freakin KNEW IT! My Ariens has eat up 4 drive belts and I knew something had to be off and was giong to check today. Thank you for confirming my paranoia!
Thanks for the video mine is a 22 just got it 2 weeks ago so it’s a left over, bought in 23 , still had the same issue and it’s an easy fix without belt being broken, mine has 4 hrs on it, best part is mine has an oil leak at drain on bottom of block that I would have never caught until it was too late , I appreciate your video very much 😊
Awesome, glad you caught the issues early. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend
I dropped mine down just over 1/4 inch, four 3/8 grade 8 washers matched it up perfectly, watched your video at 8 pm here on Sunday walking in the house done and tools put away at 905 pm , thanks again
@@timradke7775 Heck Yeah!!! Awesome job my friend 👏 👍🏻
Funny .... I had a few more hours on mine. But also ended up finding an oil leak , lol. Wasn't thrilled.
You're a life saver! Mine ( Ariens Ikon xd60) was shreading evry 6 mo and did not know why. Can't wait to fix it!
I made the modifications, it tracks well now, it was more than 3/4 off.
The Hydro gear is still whining, any ideea why?
I’m buying one tomorrow, I’ll check to see if this issue is on mine. I hope they fixed this problem, thanks for the information.
Curious if it was an Issue on the new mower, if so did the dealer fix it? I am looking at buying a new one
Just made this repair for a friend of mine. Wish I had seen this video before and it would have taken less time!
Excellent video and info at 9 mins. Exactly what I needed. Great job. I plan on getting this down today.
Thanks for the video. I've had the pully adjustment done in the video. The belt still keeps coming off. It spent more time in the shop than being used. If you have any more subjections please advise asap. Thank you so much in advance.
Wow! Thank you for a great video.
Having that problem with my zero turn,
now with this video I understand the problem.
Great I'm glad it helped you. Thanks so much for watching.
Somebody in the engineering dept blew that one. Thanks for the info.
Yes they did, we have seen a bunch of them. Hope it helps you brother, we really appreciate you watching.
Thanks for this video my gravely 52 ztx threw its second belt in about 6 months yesterday and I’m currently fishing strands of it outta the hydro pumps lol…. My pulley sure enough is way outta alignment too so looks like I’m gonna go find a spacer and fix it for good this time.
Thanks again
Just earned yourself a subscriber bud. I was wondering why the heck my belt kept coming off even when I put new belts on. Thank you.
Belt blew after 15 hours. You are correct sir
Hello Mrs T-Bone, the pulley alignment was horribly off. I know it keeps you busy changing the belts but no good for the customer. I like the special socket you made. Great video 👍
Thank you sir
I had the exact issue on my mower. Should have been a recall by Ariens/Gravely. I ended up making a 3/8” spacer for that idler pulley-problem solved.
Congratulations Tbone. That 1k really does look good
Thank you brother
You NEVER cease to Amaze Big Son's! Awesome find and share TBONE💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

Great video , thanks for posting it. I have the same issue on my 10 hour Ariens Zero Turn and its nice to see there is fairly simple fix . #Ariens

@@RaleysSmallEngines I came back to confirm that your #ariens spacer/ bushing fix took care of the issue. One thing I did not anticipate is how little room there is to route the belt! Thanks again for making this video. #ariensdrivebelt #ariensthrowsdrivebelt.
If anyone is looking for the spacer its available at most Ace Hardwares for $1.65 . I.D. is 7/16th od 1/2" by 3/8'' thick. It is in the farm hardware/bushings bin in the nuts and bolts section.
@@gregbeasley2657 AWESOME thanks my friend. Yes it is a tight are to work in. Thank your for sharing the spacer that you used.
Weak pull back spring and need the adjustment replaced 😊, Aline all the pulleys with the spindles on all mowers 😊
Thank You for information and advice
Will check next one that comes in
Also I removed 1 bolt from bracket next to clutch and slid it out of the way. Thanks again
Wow! That's just scary for this to be a known issue, but as of 2 months ago, it was still not a recall item! ! I'm so glad that I found this video! I'll be buying one of these in the near future and I will definitely be looking for this! You really should be in Arkens' pay roll, or at least given a finders fee! I'm notn100% sure which ZTR mower I'll get, but the Ariens Apex 52" is leading the pack. Can you (or anyone) verify that this issue occurs only on this Ariens model, or it is across the board? Thanks.
Thanks for watching and commenting my friend. We get these in almost weekly. Have a 60 inch deck one with 24ish hours that has the same Hydro belt idler pulley issue. Can't believe they haven't fixed the problem yet
Mine just cracked the idler arm holding the idler pully for the pumps. Spring tension pulled the arm up against the frame and rattled like crazy. Upon discovery i noticed that my pulleys dont line up either. Dealer is picking up to repair under warranty, but i need them to fix the alignment problem with the pulleys before they return it. It only has 80 hrs after 2 summers of mowing. Thanks for the heads up to the problem
Dang it. Show them our video if ya want.
Wow T-bone, your new camera person is really working out well! The small issue like those pulleys not being in alignment can give a good company like Ariens a bad name. Why wouldn't they fix that when it just takes something as small as a ten cent spacer? 👍🤔🇺🇸Roger
Thanks Roger, yes bad design. Raley's figured it out. Thanks for watching brother.
Another excellent informative video with outstanding Camera work assistance by Mrs T-Bone. Just replaced a belt and it ran fine for about 2-3 hours, heard a knocking/clanking sound and now the new belt is broken. What would you say besides my poor mechanical skills is the 2nd most probable cause? How do you eliminate the clutch as a probable cause? Thank You! God Bless
Replaced the hydro Belt on a “52” Gravely ZT Hd mower, only 314 hrs on machine
It is doubtful the pto cluch is bad. Check the other pulleys looking for bearing issues and alignment. Double and triple check belt routing.
Thanks friend. I found the same misalignment with mine. Good info
Great help! Do you have the size of the pulley spacer? And will a 5-inch long deep well 9/16 work on the long threaded bolt?
Thanks for watching. No idea Lol. What I did was go thru an a junk drawer of spacers until I found one that worked for the pulley, you can also stack flat washers on it un til the pulley lines up. As far as the Long bolt socket I made, I just measured it, and it's 5 inches long.
@@RaleysSmallEngines thanks enjoying the channel

Yes sir, I've repaired a lot of these with the same issue. Thanks Mr Henry
Would like to know if the edge model has the same pulley problem? For 2023
Please add the word GRAVELY to your title! Took me forever to find this video!
Great video. Thank you Sir for sharing your knowledge with us.
Fun video , and excellent information. Thanks
Sunex makes a 9/16th 3/8ths drive socket that's 6 inches long. Don't know if that's long enough or not but seems like it should be without having to make one.
Thank you Raley from South Texas

What size belt was the belt?
We don't go by size, we look up the OEM part number according to the model number and serial number.
Oh yea I can see that pulley higher than the other one that is crazy. That is awesome making that socket now that was a great idea. Hi Mrs. T Bone. Oh yea you got it without the clutch off. I really enjoyed this video brother. See you on the next one.

Hey Mrs. T-BONE 👋
Thanks Rooster we really appreciate you. Mrs T-bone says hello.
Im looking into possibly buying one of these mowers, other than this issue are there any other common problems? Is this a mower you would recommend to buy?
Just put a belt on mine what a job people that complain about what it cost to get repairs should try it sometimes
I have the same mower and the deck belt comes of after a few cuts I checked all the idler pulleys and the blade spindles all are OK is there a kit out there that would solve this problem any help would be greatly appreciated and
Awsome vidio! Love your work ethic!
Thank you
Just Checked my 2018 pulley is out of alignment. I wonder if this is where the whining cones from when I’m pushing and pulling the steering controls. It gets louder as it warms up. My belt looks good but I gotta figure out how to drop my pulley and add a spacer with old man eyes and broken body !!!!
Jack of all trades done sold his toolbox 😆 The new tool is pretty cool 😎
Thanks Bill
Is the ikon and zoom pto set up the same I got the zoom in my shop came in all rigged up fixed it's pulley problem but now it won't spark period
Mower has a factory defect. The idler pulley is not level with hydro trans pulley on right side setting on mower It throws belt off.I added washers 1/4 to 5/16 thick to lower idler pulley.
Thank for sharing,good video
Thank you
It's incredible that they would release a machine with a defect like this. Are brand new units still shipping like this do you know?
Bought mine 2 months ago. I have 11 hours on it and the drive belt just shredded. Now it's under a tarp in my yard till the new belt arrives. So yes, they are still shipping them with this known problem
That probably does need to be spaced down on most of these models. However take a close look at the fan blades over each hydraulic motor right under the big pulley. If any one of those fan blades has a chance it will go straight under that belt and pop it right off like it was nothing. Once they do that they get bent and the problem becomes even worse. Fan blade sits too close to the drive pulley on top of the hydraulic motor and I've seen this happened several times and it'll pop the belt light off.
Crazy, I've been running my Ariens for 4 years and finally experienced this. I noticed the pulley being out of alignment and just thought it was supposed to be this way. I put on a new Mitsubishi 1/2x57 belt and it immediately tossed it off.
How's the original belt survive for 4 years and a new one won't run long enough to back out of the garage?
I'm finally going to do this....after the third time putting the belt back on just to see if I could notice what was causing the problem with it running, I'm not winning lol!
You will WIN!! Do what I did in the video, problem solved. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend
@@RaleysSmallEngines thanks brotha!

@@RaleysSmallEngines your welcome sir
Raley, Has this issue been corrected? I just purchased a 52" Ariens. This is a very bad design flaw or someone is leaving out a spacer from the factory. Makes me question their mower now.
Thanks for the video.
I'm not sure. At the time of filming this video I had contacted the manufacturer and they didn't have a fix for it. I recommend checking your machine to be sure the pulleys are lined up. Other than this issue they are a pretty good machine in my opinion. Thanks for watching my friend.

Hard to believe all those mowers out there have this problem, that's really bad...
I bought this mower cuz it's American made in Wisconsin. If I continue to have problems I'll sell it and buy a Scag!
Great video. I run the Xd 52 How often should I replace the belt
I'm not sure I have an exact answer. Just keep an eye on it and looks for defects, also check your machine for the pulley alignment like I showed in the video. If that idler pulley is not lined up do what I did to this machine. Hope this helps my friend. Thanks so much for watching.
How long is a hydraulic drive belt on a arien zero turn mower
Preventative solution... If the pulleys aren't aligned and the belt is still good and in tact, you can release tension, loosen the pulley bolt without taking it completely off, and slide auto body shims in to space it down without taking the belt completely off. Tighten the pulley bolt, re tension the belt, and yer' golden.
Finally bought it. Love it
Are you still seeing this issue with the new Ariens mowers from 2023? With all the automation used to build products, I find it odd the alignment between these pullies would be so far off leaving the factory, perhaps alignment of pullies is not part of Ariens' manufacturing processes. Is there something that could be causing the pullies to pull out of alignment after numerous hours of moving?
Not seeing it in the newer ones. It was a factory issue on the early ones. I've done this repair to many of them. Maybe they saw my video and fixed it 😆
@@RaleysSmallEngines Thanks for helping Ariens with their Quality Control :)

Great music intro again T-Bone. Love a secret reveal, a bit of inside knowledge, you once said knowledge is power brother. Yes, I remember from my engineering days that pulleys need setting up with a straight edge. Even a small miss alignment causes heat, smells and belt wear. Nice junk drawer, an Alladins cave of parts. Love that screaming meanie. Count those fingers! Tom Doby would definitely be in the ED, that’s twice now. Hi Mrs T-Bone. Great video (why don’t you just take the clutch off 🤣🤣🤣)

I have 2022 ikon 52" 1.5 hours and belt broke. Insane
Dang it
When it comes to the tensioning bolt, you could have just cut the bolt down.
What the exact length on this OEM belt ?
Everyone I have gotten has been way too long
stupid question from the deep woods of rural MS............
Ariens 91525300 zero turn. 42" cut
Belt broke, wrapped around the right spindle pulley.
Could THIS be the result of what you are showing here on that 52" cut ?
Is this true of the Gravely ZTXL models as well?
Nevermind - just had a look at mine, and it is the exact same... terrible design! No wonder my belt snapped today. I thought I hadn't set the tensioner spring back at the right position, but I suspect that it's this problem. How has Gravely/Ariens not issued a recall on this?
My tensioner or not sure what it’s called bent when my belt snapped any video to take that off?
Sorry, I don't. Just be sure to take some pictures before and during removal. Pay close attention to the order and orientation of the spacers. It's a very simple process.
I have a problem, my Gravely that is the same as this mower keeps breaking the belt for the blades. They last up for about an hour before it breaks. Have you ran into that problem?
No sir I haven't. Please check all of your pulleys including spindle pulleys. We have also seen cheapie belts ordered online that are junk. Use a quality belt like the ones from Rotary, Stens or OEM. Hope thos helps you.
