I recently bought an IKON Select 42 to replace an older Gravely 34Z. They seem to have made some changes since the model in this video. They got rid of the separate parking brake lever and now the control levers activate the parking brake. As you mentioned I have already got on the machine and flip the levers in and then try to start the engine, which doesn't work. I am sure I will get used to that but it is a little annoying. I also don't have the dial setup for the deck height. Mine has a pin system with various holes for each height setting, which I like because it is very similar to my previous Gravely. That dial system seems like something that might start giving problems as the machine gets older. I find it a little awkward getting on and off the mower and I may try the accessory entry assist handle but I need to try to find some more information about it since it is a little pricey and I'm not sure how useful it will be.
Just bought one today. Supposed to pick it up in a couple days. Bought it from a dealer so I could get the service instead of dealing with a big box store.

You are correct. The XDX does have a fully serviceable hydro....and costs much more. Just like the comparable Ariens would. You have to compare apples to apples.
@@rocketsoutdoorpower6971 I see what you're saying, but I work to hard to spend my money on stuff that will fail apart in 5 or 6 years. Yes the hustler is more costly. But they are not saving money if they have to replace a 600.00 dollar hydro. I would much better pay for overkill. At least a ZT 2800 hydros. And a much better mower deck and frame.
@Alton Rowell and my point was that those 2 mowers are not apples to apples. Ariens/Gravely make a 6-7k mower with ZT-3100 hydros and a heavy deck and frame, as well. That's an entirely different class of mower. The Ikon would compare to the Raptor X, which also uses the ZT-2200.

@@stuckman10 We do the same thing. Warranty work doesn't pay enough, and we don't do free work for other store's customers. It's the only real advantage a small dealer can gain on the box stores.
That’s why I went with hustler 19hp which is plenty of power.
I bought a 52 bra d new. 30 minutes back fires then shuts off. What kind of gas needsd
Use premium, but if it's backfiring once hot, something else is wrong.
Bro you are rhe best
anyone have experience mulching with this machine? Or, does it need to be side discharge only?
There's mulch kits available for these. Not many people put mulch kits on riders, but they you can absolutely do it.
@@rocketsoutdoorpower6971 Thanks. I ask because I watch these guys I pay to cut my lawn run thru here without discharge chutes and they lay the clippings right back down and it looks and feels great. I think I’m ready to pay myself and buy a machine. This one is leading the pack for my .90 acre lawn
@@RealMitchRapp Do it! Just recognize that you have to slow down when mulching with a residential mower. Side discharging is faster, but mulching will look nicer.
@@rocketsoutdoorpower6971 thank you. I appreciate the tips.
@@RealMitchRapp Not a problem. Good luck!
Could you make a special order for a serviceable transaxle? I like to service my equipment and don’t believe in sealed units.
These can still be serviced. They just don't have spin-on filters. Gotta buy more mower if you want that. Any upgrade over this would have ZT-2800s or better though. Gravely ZT XL for example.
@@rocketsoutdoorpower6971 Do they have a drain and fill plug?
@@dperr338 there is a place to fill them. The cover is the drain.
I have the SpeedZTR 54 Inch Dixon /Husqvarna 2012 model as well and 984hrs the Same Hydro Gear TransAxles that my New Ariens just came with and never had to do anything do anything but keep the vents clean. to them
I would not spend my Money on a Mower with anything but Hydro Gear Maintenance Free TransAxles, just my opinion
I don’t blame you for criticizing John Deere. I have an X300 tractor with a 48” deck and it’s the worst mower I have ever used. Terrible cut.
That sucks. I really wasn't trying to criticize them, either. It's just a matter of business models. Mowers are an afterthought for them. Mowers are the foundation for companies like Ariens. I hope you get something worked out, and thanks for watching.
Brand new
You want to know what mowers and hydro transmissions are having problems, just look on utube. I see more zt2200 and more cub cadet problems. Those hydros are not holding up. I see a lot of pump failures.
That may be the case, but it's all relative. Almost every brand uses a ZT-2200. If someone is using that same mower on multiple acres, they're going to have more problems and need more mower.
@@rocketsoutdoorpower6971 I see your side. I just bought a Hustler Fas trak 54 inch deck for 7916.00.
It's got ZT 3200 hydro,duel fuel tanks,roll over protection. I guess I'm spoiled rotten.
I bought the Ariens apex 52 inch. I freaking love it. I came from the bad boy maverick 54 inch cut. I like Ariens more
Very glad you're digging it!
I’m looking at an ariens ikon or a bad boy magnum, why do you prefer the ariens other than the price obviously?
@@jamespratt6486 honestly I loved my bad boy you can’t go wrong with it by no means. BUT I really do like the height and the way the framing is on the Ariens more than the bad boy. Seems more heavily built.
@@combatengineerbroski6712 I guess also being 1k less is a bonus as well. I wonder about the spindles being as good on the ariens as the bad boy gets good reviews on them
@@jamespratt6486 so far great. I have 200 hours on mine and it hasn’t had any issue with spindles BUT make sure you keep extras hudraulic pulley belts. Unless you have a dealer local they are hard to find at lowes.
And the farmer can write off the green lol
Yeah, I suppose the guys writing them off don't care about the ridiculous mark-up lol
Front tires are garbage and go flat repeatedly, even though I have a smaller, flat lawn. Once they go flat, they're impossible to reinflate without the help of a tire dealer. Eventually had to buy solid tires from another company. Ariens is aware -- pneumatic front tires from a bicycle tire manufacturer. Not smart.
Same tires you'll find on every other ZT in it's class. They all buy tires from the same manufacturers. Simple solution is to tube them.
just bought one 52 xd put 18 hours on it and the belt broke, replace the belt the pto went out at 20 hour's, sent it back, took a month to get it back, put 2 hours on it pto switch went out again, sent it back to Ariens dealer this time, got it back within 2 week's, put about 4 more hours on it and the pto switch went out again, so disappointed in this mower, why does everyone rave how well there's works, but I get screwed, peace of shit...
Something is clearly causing PTO switches to fail. The dealer needs to find the real issue. This obviously doesn't happen to all of them. Sorry you're having a rough go though.
I heard their customer service sucks . that is a deal killer for a brand I am not familiar with.
I don't know who has said that, but they're still a family ran company. They've always been great for us, and your only customer service experience should be with your dealer.
@@rocketsoutdoorpower6971 Allyne family farms says they treated him poorly
@@vbvini Well, if that's someone you trust, go with their opinion. Not one brand out there makes everyone happy. The actual customer service side of it should lie with the dealer, too. Ariens customer is the dealer. The consumer is the dealer's customer. Working for a dealer, I can say Ariens service is better than any other brand we deal with.
Best bang for your hard earn $$$ Go with the Ariend Ikon XD hands down better than the cub badboy husler etc.. Not saying these are not decent machines:) but after monts of resurchind Z Turns Ariens makes the better lawn mower hands down! and im sorry for all you John Deer fans out there? go ahead and pay the extra 500 for the name brand and green and yellow colors! there absolute Shit! do your digilance reshure befor buying a Deer Hope this help have a great day love ICEMan
The EZT transmission and the ZT 2200 are not serviceable hydros.
I would not put that much money 💰 in something with a non serviceable hydros. I would rather buy a Hustler raptor xdx.. which is a much better mower. When I buy something I look at the long jevity. Q
But if someone buys a Hustler now they won't have to buy another mower in 6 years.
Some people pay a little thinking there getting a good deal.
@@rocketsoutdoorpower6971some ppl don't understand there are different classes of machines from most manufacturers...the right machine for each person is a balance of need, wants, future needs (if different from present ones) and budget...I am using an Ikon XD 42" doing residential lots professionally...no lot is bigger than a half acre...Am I concerned about the hydros? Sure... sort of...but to jump up to a mower twice the price for a 7 gauge deck and serviceable hydros just didn't fit the budget and application requirements...I'd consider replacing the pumps if I have to if I haven't replaced the machine due to changing requirements...either way - lower upfront cost means turning profits sooner by matching the application to the specifications...cheers!
not built as strong as a raptor Hustler
Thanks for the insight 👍
Wouldn’t even consider buying a John Deere? They lost me at woke.
