RECOVERY 38FOOT " RV ON IT'S SIDE"

  • 38 foot Fifth Wheel travel trailer tipped over coming off a sharp corner . Broke the fifth wheel plate and as it went over the RV hit an oncoming van .
    I lifted the RV off the Dodge truck and he drove it off to the side of the road .
    We than picked the RV up slid two straps under the unit one to the high side rear axle purchase and the other to the fifth wheel tongue put two 2x6 s at roof line to share the load . . Positioned our truck off the shoulder and gently winched it up .
    As it came up the rear slider fell off . If you look at the end of the bridge you can see where the RV actually hit the bridge as it went over ripping the slider all to heck .
    Took us several hours to clean up the debris field .

      Mr. Blanck, just watching the video is not going to prevent this kind of accident. Just as telling people not to drink and drive will prevent drinking and driving. It’s about education, respect for road rules, and understanding the dynamics of towing. All of which this driver seemingly ignored.

      @@stefandwoodham It's obvious to some of us but just park near the road and watch how many motorhomes, 5th wheel trailers, travel trailers, and others simply go too fast. I've learned to drive my motorhome 55 to 60 mph. Better gas mileage, easier stopping, more safety, and I'm more rested when I reach my destination. Most RV'ers don't take instructions or lessons because . . . why? "I already know how to drive" . . . until they screw up badly.

      I tow my RV trailer at 58-62 mph or what the road condition dictate for safe travel. Wy. 80 mph speed means I still go no more than 62...Now many RV's do I see blowing by in the fast lane at 80-85 mpg... A LOT...

    I see a lot of these 5th wheels going 70-80 mph down the road. Last September one passed us on I-40 east of Asheville NC going well over the 65 mph limit for that area. A few minutes later traffic stops and this 5th wheel has been reduced to a tangled steel frame with debris spread over a 1/4 mile stretch of highway. The f250 he was towing with was on it's side. Fortunately the driver and occupants were visibly ok (they were walking around in a daze).

      What qualifies you (other than opinion) to state that they should be banned from the roads? Have you towed such a vehicle? Do you have a CDL or are you type rated otherwise? I’ve been towing for nearly 40 years, and the key is towing safely, with an education of what I am doing and towing. If we go with you reasoning, then we should remove cars from the road because drunk drivers may operate them, or a semi may blow them off the road. Do you realize that per driving mile for tractor trailer there are more accidents. Better remove them from the road. Do you realize that most goods you buy are transported by long haul trucking. Please educate yourself.

      Yes and Yes. Been pulling a 5th wheel for over 5 years and 2 years with a Travel Trailer. Before retirement I work as a tow truck driver with CDL's . Seen more than one accident and 90 % of them is from the driver making a mistake since I had first hand info on what cause the accident I can say this. One of last calls I got before retiring what a 40 foot MH on it's side, cause of this was a tire blow out on the front tire and the driver doing the wrong thing like hitting the brakes, which in this case the person should have steer straight speed up some to over come the sideways forces cause by the blow out then start to slow down and get off the road . In the case of this video it's almost a sure thing what cause this is from taking the curve to fast since the center of gravity is so high.

    Thanks for making sense of my question, your answer explained a lot. I think it was either a Pace or Jayco that we were trying to fix or put back together. I’ve framed a few dozen houses working college summers and knowing how fasteners have a tendency to loosen, I wouldn’t have much faith it the brads or staplers used in the mobile home construction videos I’ve seen. Screws are good but take too much labor, in this crash they may not help. I like the aluminum cage principle despite the weight tradeoff. I guess nothing beats the old AirStream units. We had a neighbor who parked a 35’-35’ AirStream behind his home and let the kids have sleepovers inside, that was pretty cool, the interior used teak or another dark wood, making it a beautiful setup. They must sell for a fortune now days.

    I'm currently working on a small section of delamination on my fifth wheel I can't imagine trying to piece that poor thing back together. I don't have much experience towing something as big as my 36 foot Keystone and I plan to take it very easy, if I want to get somewhere in a hurry I'll take my SLK 55 that's designed to take turns at higher speeds. I noted a stroller coming out of the fifth wheel, I hope no one was injured in the accident and the driver learned a valuable lesson and all their future travels are safe and enjoyable.

      Dennis Harvey I'm not sure. It's 20 mph curve. A trailer going 30 mph could easily tip over on a 20 mph curve. But I agree, it looks to me like he was going faster than that. That's why I thought he was maybe going the speed limit, 55, and didn't pay attention to the yellow warning signs, until it was too late. But he could have been going even slower, and still tipped over..

      This my first. I have never seen a 5th wheel on its side. I can not count the number of bumper pulls in about every kind of a wreck you can imagine. As for the curves my experience I can do them 15 miles over but I don’t push it. It’s recommended to pull a trailer of any size no more than 45 miles an hour. In 2001 I decided to travel slower. Speed limits are usually maximum 75 minimum 40 I travel 50. I get some beef about it but I’m safer on the road. As one trucker said you can do things the safe way a million times but usually you’ll do the same thing the unsafe way only once. Be safe on the road.

    I hope the driver of the vehicle that was pulling this "trailer" is watching the guts fall out. I usually don't want bad luck to follow bad luck, but the driver needs to see just what happens when you don't know how to pull something this size. I would think some pre-training would be required before anyone is allowed to pull such a large trailer. Probably not. Hope nobody was hurt. I hate seeing all that stuff falling out the side and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it. Congratulations to the guys working to set it upright. Built as light as possible, for towing and just plain saving money. Usually the ones with the corrugated aluminum skin are a little heavy and sturdier. The laminated side walls are usually the light and ultra light models, they aren't made for towing on their side regardless of what type of exterior wall they have though.

      What kind of material do you yokels suggest for an RV? You would have to have a semi to tow it. Some people are putting light truck tires on these RV’s so they can tow at 75 mph. Stay safe, curves are taken too fast in most situations. Humans make mistakes.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      something along the lines of require a CDL and 60MPH limit sounds like a good start, since people cannot seem to control themselves or use enough brains to stay safe ;)
      LT tires would be overloaded on pretty much any setup, even if empty

  • @scallihan12

    Yep, taking a curve too fast hauling a fifth wheel is a recipe for disaster. I towed a 38 footer for a year and was always careful about those curves. And windy conditions. Just gotta use common sense. Everyone who wants to RV should take a "boot camp" like the one offered by Escapees.

    • @pbasnight
      @pbasnight 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They should be required to get a CDL License. Some people don't understand all there is to towing.

    • @kimobrien.
      @kimobrien. 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pbasnight Most RV's don't require a CDL because they don't reach the 26,000 GVWR pounds for the tow vehicle or bus. The trailers are not usually over the CDL 10,000 GVWR either. Some states do require CDLs for all heavy vehicles like TX and CT. This accident appears to have speed as its cause and therefore entirely preventable.

    • @kimobrien.
      @kimobrien. 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @LoveofVelvet Looks more like he lost control somewhere in the first curve not the second by the direction in which the trailer fell. Looks like the bridge being narrow is biggest reason for the warning signs and not the turn radius of the curves. He probably thought the curve warning was not necessary on first look until he saw how narrow the bridge was wet asphalt was no doubt a contributing cause. Probably hit the brakes in the first curve and it began to slide left or fish tail onto the bridge. He hit the foot brakes instinctively when he should have hit the (trolley) trailer brakes and the accelerator to stop the trailer sway.
