    a 5 gallon bucket with a 1" hole in the lid and a $5 toilet plunger from walmart makes a decent washing machine! use a separate bucket with clean water to rinse and just hang dry.

    • @KarlsLabReport
      @KarlsLabReport 5 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      Buy yourself a mop bucket with the ringer deal on the side - makes the wash/rinse water extraction MUCH EASIER. Then thing dry much faster when hung up.

      40 years ago when we had our first child and cloth diapers were the norm, we'd clean those dirty diapers by first putting them in a sealable 5 gallon bucket with bleach added to the water, then put it in the bed of the pickup while we drove. It worked really, really well!

      For sure. That's excellent. Unfortunately a few people do not have that option either because they are too poor to afford any kind of motor vehicle much less a motor home, or they don't drive. These poor including myself are stuck where they are and are sitting ducks when things get so bad with inflation that they can no longer afford their one bedroom apartment. Not looking forward to that future at all.

    If you have been a bachelor for any length of time, an RV isn't an big adjustment. I'm used to doing my laundry once a week at a laundry mat, and my 5th wheel is as nice as my condo was. ( I miss the fireplace and garage) and Im amazed at how quiet it is considering how close we are packed in. Covid-19 changed a few things, lots of kids with nothing to do (pool is closed) and the idea that I can be gone in a hours keeps me from feeling too stuck. My take is living in an RV is pretty much like living anywhere, apart from a few minor adjustments. None of them qualify as the 'dark side"

    Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I th-cam.com/users/postUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

    Just stumbled across your channel today. Excellent video.
    Being handy with tools and able to fix minor issues while traveling is a huge plus. A lot of people go out and buy a new RV and expect it to be to problem free. WRONG. Stuff breaks, systems stop working, etc. You cannot rely on RV dealers to get you rig in for service when traveling... they always seem to be booked out for service weeks in advance.
    I totally agree on the "there's no such thing as a perfect RV". I Perfect example of this is the truck camper I own, which I've made a lot of videos about in my channel. It's not fun staying in it when the weather turns bad, because there's no place to comfortably sit for long periods of time.

    • @outliersoverland

    • @telcobilly
      @telcobilly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree! I have an overhead slide in utility shell built out of fiberglass. I just got out of trucking after 12 years and got my pickup up and running after sitting at the trucking yard for four and a half years. It's a 2008 Tacoma 4x4 Access cab with a 6-ft bed. I've been tempted by trailers but I honestly don't have a place to safely store one, nor do I want to go to the expense of buying one when my rig now is fully paid off. I'm trying to get this rig set up where I can live in it while I'm in the United States. I have a microwave and an ARB refrigerator behind the driver and passenger seats. I built a plywood deck at bed rail level which gives me a sizeable basement below the sleeping area. I have an attic above the truck cab where all my clothes and shoes are stored. I have a six gallon water jug and a 2000 watt generator in the basement. This arrangement frees up the sleeping area but does require a bit of a climb to get in. I have heavy duty bumpers with a winch. Because I'm in Texas and it's smoking hot, I'm trying to figure out air conditioning. So far it looks like I need to buy a portable unit and place it in the rear left corner of the sleeping area with the exhaust hose coming out of the port hole of the left barn door. A window unit would be too impractical for my setup.
      Here's a link from my old website of my build a few years ago. Back when we lived in a somewhat normal world.. www.angelfire.com/tx/nale/durashell.html

    • @alexblaze8878
      @alexblaze8878 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It’s not simply a matter of people being bigoted. Most people living this nomadic life are very decent but it comes with some very unsavory types as well. Theft is or can be a big problem with transient living. Also, while the vast majority use proper sanitation, the occasional bonehead that poops on the ground (or worse, empties their holding tank illegally onto the ground) and leaves it uncovered makes for unseemly sights and smells.
      I did the “RV on the water” with a 37 foot sailboat for 2 years and sailed 2-3 days a week returning to an anchored spot in a protected bay. Out of 8 sailboats in that bay, mine was the only functioning sailboat-the rest of the sea nomads there never moved their boats which created an eyesore at times and lots of drugs and alcohol intoxicated live-aboards were noisy at all hours of the night, sometimes dumping their feces overboard brought marine patrol (cops) constantly harassing everyone because of the bad behaviors of a few. It was a wonderful time with beautiful sunsets and dolphins and the like, no worrying about insects or other critters, and very inexpensive to live.
      But the constant threat of bad weather, anchors coming unmoored at the most inopportune times, seagulls and pelicans and cormorants and herons emptying their bowels 30 feet above you as they perched on your mast, constant worry of thieves, keeping the bank of marine batteries charged, running generators to operate an AC unit necessitated the running of generators which were expensive to keep maintained in the salt air environment, and those frustrating navy showers became too much for me and I up and sold the boat 2 years ago.
      I could’ve endured all of that for much longer if not for the few vagrants that made us all look bad and brought unwanted attention and scornful looks from nearby land residents.

When mouse-proofing we always mixed steel wool especially the ones for stove cleaning with our insulation gap-filler (Great-stuff at Lowes, etc.) You might not be able to find very point of entrance. We were shocked about big mice were able to sneak through what we thought were pin-hole sized gaps. So you might still get a few surprise guests. We placed the extra large mouse sticky pads near warm areas (like water heater or furnace, etc.) We would mix D-con pellets with little natural peanut butter on the middle of the large sticky pad. Your 'sniffer' will tell you if there is one taking a "4ever nap" on the pad.

We’ve got all of our European friends checking on rules for buying vehicles in Germany and Austria as we are looking at vehicles there, also looking at some in the Netherlands and the UK and we have questions about logistics. There are just so many more choices in terms of EV’s in Europe and for more reasonable prices than the $400k rigs available in the states, so we prefer to buy over there, but know that will come with challenges.

      I hitchhiked round Europe in the 70s and then owned campervans for nearly 30 years. The main difference now is that some towns don't welcome you as there are so many on the road now, on the other hand there are more places run by local authorities that are very cheap for a spot and basic facilities. There is a book of those but I forget its name. I only ever stayed in relatives driveways when in UK but I think it's much more expensive here than most of Europe.

    As a trucker remember if you go to a truck stop DONT put your slide outs out. There’s just no room and truckers need that space to get rest. Remember they can’t go to a camp site and when truck stops are full they have a hard time finding other safe places to park. So give them a break ok thanks

    There are people that just are not meant to live the RV life, its the best life if you know how to do it, most people that jump into this are not mentally ready and still dependent on society's comforts, if you like living in a house or apartment or town home with your king bed and 50 inch TV just forget a nomadic life its not about fitting everything you have in your suburbia home into a rolling home you wont be happy, its about true minimalism and living for the road and next place to experience, its about camp fires and sitting outside your rig listening to the wild life and fishing and dipping into a mountain stream in the morning and being away from society not just joining society with another 1000 RV's.

    We go RVing with our two house cats so have NEVER had a rodent problem. If you do go boondocking on BLM land near Quartzite during the winter, one of the things you can do for a small fee per outing is rockhounding with the local Quartzite rock hound club. The club has a website with a posted schedule of outings and if you actually join the club you can also use the equipment in their shop or get them to cut your rocks into slabs for a small fee. We went on two outings with them in January and found green banded rhyolite, nuggets of fossil coral, red jasper and a little petrified wood. You will need a high clearance vehicle (pickup or jeep) for these outings and a willingness to drive on unpaved roads.

    I can identify with some of what you said. We currently don't own a RV, but years ago we did. I'm thinking that maybe we'll get back into it. So here's what I've experienced: when things break: yep, I ran over the dump hose one time and had to replace it. Before our trip even started, we stopped to get gas and the overhead fixture damaged our A/C unit. Luckily it only damaged the outer cover of the unit and not the unit itself. Weather: one time we went camping and it rained! It rained for a couple of days. While my husband didn't like it, my sister and I were thrilled! We spent the time in the overhead bed of our class C reading books! We were in heaven! Otherwise, I haven't encountered any of the other problems you guys have and am sorry that such clickiness goes on. That is a shame!

    #11 - Outside TVs on RVs! People leave those stupid things blaring and they're not even outside using them. I think they should be banned unless you're at some sort of sporting event and tailgating.

      Sharon -- My new Thor had one and the first thing I did was was to pull it out and gained some extra storage too. I can't see the point of a big TV outside while camping to get away.

    • @melfreemans
      @melfreemans 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      We try to be very respectful with our outside tv, it's never loud and we never ever watch anything R rated because of the children in campgrounds. I find loud obnoxious talking all hours of the night and loud music to be a bigger problem than our tv.

    • @melfreemans
      @melfreemans 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mel Rey most RVs these days have little to do with camping or anything outdoorsy. We chose a hybrid because we wanted to feel like we were still camping. The tv has been a life saver for entertaining my niece when it was too rainy for playing.

  • @koningbolo4700
    @koningbolo4700 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    So basically this list boils down to: get good quality stuff and know how to get it functioning again when they break, get used to roughing it at times (and learn to love it), know where and when to splash on minor luxuries and avoid large groups (or gatherings) of people (of any kind).
    Especially the last one: I have been in all sorts of interest groups (from car brand specific clubs to historic re-enactment groups) and without any exception they generally suck to the core after a few months when you start noticing the politics, the bullshit, the lies, the sub clubs, the rivalry, the gossip, the bitching and moaning behind peoples backs and the (financial) interests. Then there are the swollen ego's and the acquiring of both money and power. More often then not these three things tend to reside with those who can't handle either of them with almost always disastrous results.
    I have been looking for a place/group to "belong" to for the better part of 2 decades, finally accepting that it is impossible to find such a place or group. The good news is you can get a strong feeling of belonging but it will not be in a group or a place but with you and a significant other, maybe some kids and some pets.
    Really, take it from me, of all the tips in this video list, the last one (#10) is the most important in my opinion, you simply can't fix people, not even the rare good ones and generally stay away from big pretentious events. They started out great, go bigger and bigger every year and mostly after the 5th (or so) time they are organised they start to get soar, over organised, over regulated, boring, it's experience becomes subject to or get filled with sentiments of jealousy and should be avoided like the bubonic plague. Better find the smaller, enthusiasticly and passionately organised events which can be enjoyed as they are meant to be.

    • @KarlsLabReport
      @KarlsLabReport 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I TOTALLY hear you about groups of people. I too have looked for an interest group to "belong" to, be a part of, a place to learn good info about the subject at hand, etc. Have checked out numerous HAM radio clubs, computer clubs, etc. Inevitably the politics, cliques, power plays and the drama turned me off early on and I left disgusted soon thereafter. As you said, you cannot fix people - where there are people assembled in any size group >3, you WILL have drama. I RVed full time for several years, and I can tell you it's NOT like they used to portray it in "Trailer Life" magazine - where you'd meet all sorts of wonderful people while RVing and make all sorts of life-long friends. Basically I found it to be apartment living on wheels, only in a tiny box with all the same bad behavior one encounters in many apartment complexes. MOST of my 'fellow RVers' were ill behaved trash with lots of money, I'm sorry to say.

    Having DONE full-time RV for several years, I have to say I think one needs a "home base" in a location central to where you want to travel - rather than being stuck in the box-on-wheels full time. HAVE the house or apartment where you can have your workshop/art studio/whatever you like; in other words a REAL HOME to come home to. Then when you feel like traveling, take the SMALL, CONSERVATIVE RV or, better yet, VAN, out for a couple weeks on the road. The RV was novel for a while, but after a while it became a real grind. I like having my current house with my tools, electronic lab, etc. AND the SMALL RV in the driveway for trips.

I spent money and got a campsite further away (it had free shutttles) from the Talladega Racetrack and was so grateful we did. The free camping closest to the track was completely out of control with fights, drinking, and just overall trashing if everything. No thanks. So happy we paid and actually got to enjoy the weekend at the races.

    We've been "full timing" since 1993...so we're pretty well versed at the pro's & cons of full time RV living. Early on we found California to be pretty RV Friendly, but over the years it has turned around 180*….now to the point that most anyone in an RV is looked down upon as "homeless". For many years their Beach Campgrounds (at least around the San Diego area) were first come, first serve. Now it is nearly impossible to reserve a site.....and areas that "legally" still allow overnight parking on the street will get you a ticket or worse.

    As a wannabe RV'er, things I want to know are 1) Where do you find water to refill your tanks out there (like at Quartzite)? 2) Where do you dump your tanks?: 3) How do you find places to stop just for the night on the way across country that don't require a reservation (as in parking lots, side of the road, etc) 4) How friendly do you get with all these people you meet? 5) How do you deal with people you'd rather not get involved with? 6) How does a single or older person deal with potentially dangerous situations or intruders? 7) How hard is it to get mechanical help when you're out in the middle of nowhere? We had the RV from hell about 12 years ago and every single time we went out, something major was guaranteed to break. Seems like every bill hovered around $1000. Got rid of that one before it killed us, but would like to try it again with a more trustworthy vehicle.

    I have 2 pet peeves when it comes to camping. We don't have an r v, we tent camp. Now I camp for the solitude and quiet. We don't have pets. Pet peeve # 1. Music. It infuriates me that people find it necessary to blast their music. If you wish to have music, fine, have it but use headphones or ear buds. I do not wish to hear your music. #2. Pets. You love your pet. Ì do not. No matter how much you adore little fido to please keep in mind that not all of us share your opinion. Oops, I guess I have a third one. Coming uninvited into my campsite. Walk by, say hi. That's fine, but I don't need you making yourself at home and telling me your life story. OK, so I got that off my chest. Thanks for reading.

    Love this! Great Vlog! My first time viewing you guys, but really like the candid and reality based approach! Have been sailing and camping for most of my adult life, and can testify that, in both pursuits, the difference between an adventure and an ordeal is ATTITUDE! You two definitely get this, and understand that RVing, like all of life, is pretty much "it is what it is"! Once you accept that truism, you are ready for great adventures and lots of RV fun! The worst 3 years of my life were spent on a 42 foot sailboat. I was a navigator in the navy and those skills were what saved me the groundings, collisions and pier destruction. However I had minimal electrical and mechanical skills. Trouble. If you think a breakdown in a RV is bad try it 300 miles from the nearest port. Takes a long time to sail 300 miles when there is no wind. No garages in the next town. Happy day when I bought it, a huge relief when I sold it. Lookin at small RV's and taking some basic electrical and mechanical courses at a local community college. Dreaming on.

    Do you ever have problems with “too friendly”,people,children? Is there like etiquette about people coming unto your space? Do you have to be an extrovert? Just thinking that while I’m friendly in work setting,(I’m an RN),when I get away,I want to get Away. What do you think,is that how other campers think?

    • @curious8890
      @curious8890 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Kari Fredrikson there are rules of etiquette. No walking on another's site. If you want to keep to yourself just don't engage with passersby. I'm private too so I smile and nod good morning or evening and keep going on with whatever. We have a tt largely bc we have 2 small dogs. It's costly to board them or even take to a motel. So people may ask "what kind of dog is that". I'm just saying that I've never come across a rude or intrusive camper in 17 years. Maybe bc I'm not rude or intrusive? You might try renting a c class first. That's what we did. We also rented a stationary tt at a fishing lake to see what that was like. My husband is far more outgoing since we started this. It's fun to watch. He despises driving the trailer and setup. So there's that.

    • @alaboutfood2326

      We experienced both types. I think it all depends on the type of place and kind of visitor you encountered. For example, in Texas we stayed at a couple of places. One was near a very well known for "river floaters" which during spring & summer if your RV spot wasnt near other FT RV-living guests you were especially on weeknights generally surrounded by some drunken music blasting partying 3/4 of the night that wud stumble into your site and trip over waste line or powercord/cable line. Then while in the Midwest there was a site that was, well.... "a tad small". I woke up one morning to dining area window's view to see the next door neighbor bedroom slide extended over the top of our picnic table and seeing "plumbers crack smiling at me" while said neighbor tried to reach his tank release. (That was over 6years ago, you cant un-see that)😫😫
      We also have been blessed with some beatiful locales and made some great friends and we still keep in communications with even years after having 1st met them.

      Exxxxxacccctllly! This is one of the best questions I have seen posted. I have been wanting to ask some of the seasoned travelers this. I am the type that doesn't do good in big crowds but can handle it. They just wear me down. My wife is the chatty one. HaHa. My aunt and uncle did the full time RV lifestyle for several years. He fixed up a golf cart with horns, lights, a microphone etc. and they would ride around campgrounds and talk to anyone and everyone that would listen to them. I am curious how many folks like that are out there and how do you get away from them? Or is it impossible? Or do people respect your privacy if you don't act chatty. Anyway we want to the RV lifestyle for a couple of years when we retire.

    • @alaboutfood2326
      @alaboutfood2326 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dirtwhisperer658 Yeh, sooo it does depend on factors like the locale (is the tourist-y area and how close to the "action" you are--- RV in or near Branson for your needs the farther from downtown or Silver Dollar City, definitely worth it. Like Kimberling City or Lampe, Reed Springs, etc.) ** For your wants, avoid Quartzite NM- crowds galore!!** Next idea is within the RV park itself-- are you put among the nightly/frequent turnover sites OR are you among other Full-timers living there.
      We found that especially if you are work-camping for the park (typically part help in exchange free lot rent, utilities-or at least set amount covered, sometimes paid a wage and or free/discounted propane or other services) you are parked separately from guests. Namely when working for State or National Parks.
      If the Park is just Full-timers that are NOT just a retirement centered community then there are days on end where people are still working regular jobs outside the park so it feels like a mobile home community. Seasonally Work-camping for Amazon (Yes, that Amazon) you can hangout with whoever you befriend but you can definitely have your own life.(try the Campbellsville KY... If its still available, avoid the Fernly NV one.) They may have added others since 2012 when we did ours).

    I used to RV. and I do plan on going back. The reservation thing can be really bad. We reserved a site in advance. The second day we're told they thought we were with a group and had put us in the middle of it. The campgrounds mistake. It was memorial Day Weekend and the only other site they had, that they wanted us to move to, was not a water front, with a beach as we had picked, but out in a field. We said we'd move if they could give us something similar. We got a look like we were the crazy ones. As the group started arriving, we heard management tell them, we had set up in the site without their permission. Things got ugly after that with our new neighbors. My kids were afraid to ever camp again.

    1.) Design/build/customize your own. Personally, I'd rather go with a trailer set-up, because I don't want to have to tow a secondary vehicle, and I don't want to have to try driving a 20 ft.+ vehicle around everywhere.
    2.) Plan & pick your destinations according to season ...obviously you're not going to want to be in tornado alley when tornadoes are in-season.
    3.) Keep a list of what is most-likely to wear out and stock up. For-granted you won't be able to prepare for everything, though that's where AAA comes in handy, as well as family/friend you can call.
    4.) Stock up on Moth Balls and D-Con.
    5.) Know your rights AND the laws of wherever you plan on staying. And always have an alternative plan ...it doesn't always have to be Wal-Mart, it can Lowes, Home Depot, Waffle House, etc.
    6.) As said ...always have an alternative --there's mall parking lots OR even stealth camping.
    7.) Suck it up, Buttercup? ...EXACTLY! ;)
    8.) This is another reason why I'd want a truck & trailer set-up instead just one big vehicle. Plus it may prove difficult to pull an RV into a laundry mat parking lot.
    9.) Baby Wipes! ...2 packs --one pack for washing(I pour Sea Breeze into mine) and the second pack for wiping/rinsing. As long as you concentrate your efforts on your pit-areas, the rest can go for a long period. ALSO consider a seat cover(put a hoody reversed over the seat) and couch covers(old blankets/bed sheets work great). They're easier to wash than the actual chair/couch surface. And it doesn't hurt to stock up on some Lysol and deodorizer. One will go nose-blind to such close quarters.
    10.) Anybody that goes out of their way to be your friend, RVing or not, one should always be skeptical of. But then again ...it just comes down to survival skills, watching your back, and opt'ing to bug out if/when the circumstances(or simply your gut) calls for it.

    1) You must adapt, compromise to the level you want/budget/comfort.
    2) Insulate, ventilate, cover
    3) If you can stay small and are handy, build your own using a full-size cargo van as your canvas. You will know all your systems and won't have to wait MONTHS AT A TIME for the Horrible Customer Service the RV Industry is known for.
    4) See #3 above. If you build it using a van, you know every nook and cranny. The engine firewall and the vent in the back near the bumper are places that you may have to address. Also, keeping a low power led light at night inside the engine bay and under the van may scare them away. Park away from tall grass and in an open field.
    5) Discrimination....I am 54, so it depends on your age. Then there's the age of the Vehicle.
    6) Well, competition and sucky management combined.
    7) Agreed, nothing perfect exists.
    8) Use 100% cotton for non-sweaty conditions, mostly inside, re-wear, it doesn't stink!. Poly/Nylon/Rayon when going on sweaty activities which you may have to use only once. Buy a cheapo $100 washer with separate wash/rinse and spinner tubs.
    9) A high-top, plain vanilla cargo van offers more stealth capabilities allowing you to stay "out-there". Maybe you want to have one night a week in the cheapest campground ($30-$35) and take advantage of water in/out, cleaning, re-charging, laundry and the aforementioned best-shower-of-the-week.
    10) RTR and Quartzsite, must do at least once....I want to meet Grandpa-Santa Bob once in my Life.

    The only thing that really bothered me and sounded completely unreasonable was the discrimination factors. I had no idea that certain RV parks were limited to seniors, nor did I know that they would deny you based on the age of your rig.

      Our question is... WHAT do they gossip about ? ..."Oh Joe drank a lot last night; he's a drunk..blah blah" ???? I would find gossip about me and mine hysterical !!!! However, we will NEVER go to that place anyhow !

    @3:52 .......Cal Poly, SLO!!!!! Awesome! I lived in a 27 foot Dodge Travco motorhome at Avila Camper-Trailer park on the other side of the hill from the hot springs. I was there from 1973 to 1976, graduated in M.E. in 1978. The motorhome was purchased from Dick Smothers of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Team. My mom and dad took us kids on a 6 week tour of the USA in 1969 in it. We field tested an Amana Radarange microwave oven, probably the first motorhome with a microwave oven ever. Nobody across the country ever saw or heard of one back then. NASA put one in the Airstream Quarantine Trailer for the Apollo 11 crew. Now every RV has one.
