  • Bob, Billy Joe, Eric,Torie and I just got back from an awesome week at Mark Twain National Forest, Missouri, USA. Thank you Bob for selecting the location, pre-work and maps. This is the first of several episodes on our adventure. The survival situation shown in this video was real. It was not a reenactment. Enjoy!
    This adventure demonstrated several key learnings: 1) Everyone should have a map and compass, 2) Don't go off-trail unless less you must. Shortcuts are often not short-cuts. 3) Everyone should stay together, 4) Develop contingencies (water sources for example) before starting the hike.
    See Billy Joe’s ( / billyjoedenny ) and Bob’s ( / bob808knight ) channels for other videos on the adventure.

    Awesome job ken I personally know how much video footage you shot. You could have made a full length movie with all that. I have to say if I was truly lost in the wood you and Billy Joe would be the two people I would like to have by my side. Between the three of us we could survive anything. I truly had a great time. But only regrets was it was not long enough. There's so much to explore up there we will have to go back someday.the Oven works great! Yes I couldn't wait to try it out lol. I haven't tried out the distiller yet.win I get a chance to go back out in to the field I will. Yep there will be a video on both of them. Hey Billy Joe I really did enjoy your golden rod. Lol I can't wait for this spring meet up... Especially since we will be spending the night in the cave. I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of people there this year. I'll talk to you soon brother. Have a great evening.

    We got lost out there ALL day. Ran out of water, saw some cows and wild horses. Finally located one of the rivers and traveled up stream til we found our way out. It was 7 in the evening when we got back. My mare was so happy she pooped in the river while she was drinking. There were ppl floating down this river on tubes and my horse was pooping and the gelding tried to lay down. It was 98 that day, and I feel fortunate to have made it out.

    Lets plan a week on a lake with only breakfast and lunch rations. When I was a kid, me, my father and four of his friends did just that. The cabin was at the end of a drop off point, just a step or two off the float of a DeHavilland DHC-2 Beaver. We had to catch our dinner for a week and that's exactly what we did. I will never forget that experience. Sadly, 3 of those 6 are now gone. I remember them in their prime.

      PitFireOutdoors We had a blast. Bob's humor is outrageously funny and is certainly different from my naive, reserved self. This added to the playful, fun time that all of us had throughout the entire camping trip. (I had to look up the meaning of what was he said at the campfire in the "urban dictionary" to understand the joke.). The final episode from this week-long camping trip has just been uploaded to TH-cam.

    I don,t quite know what say or what to think about this vid. You all had fun and that's what counts! I've hiked all over the Ozarks and one thing everyone learns is that most designated trails follow ridgelines "easier walking" but water up there is hard to find. I use topo maps, stay away from designated trails, stay more in the valleys "usualy a stream or river is down there" and "more wildlife. Keep on Keepin on!

    Hi Bob ; Ken and Billy Joe. The three great adventurers !!
    It is fun to watch you guys working together. It would be neat to see one of you using the GPS and another with a Compass/map, for comparison.It is interesting to note that the electronics are not as great in the bush, as in the modern world.
    But we are not worried..cause you got Ken with you, he knows the big bush good..lol
    2:32 is that a turtle or tortoise? That stopping & talking to the woods inhabitants..is true Bushcraft manners. Just hope you don't be like that with a bear..lol
    6:53 I wonder if you could climb a tree and have a better look around ? that's what I would try to get my land location.
    9:25 Any Frogs in there to eat?
    Great Hammock Set ups you all three have.

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay tuned for more adventure... 2:32: Answer is as follows: A division of reptiles called chelonia includes turtles, tortoises and terrapins. For the most part, the difference between a turtle and a tortoise is more of a matter of semantics than a strict scientific separation. Colloquially, both biologists and laypeople use the word "turtle" to mean all chelonians. In general, the reptiles referred to as turtles live in or near the water and have adapted to swim by holding their breath underwater. The reptiles referred to as tortoises typically live primarily in arid regions and are built for storing their own water supply and walking on sandy ground.
      From a biological perspective, a tortoise is a kind of a turtle, but not all turtles are tortoises. Tortoises occupy their own taxonomic family, called testudinidae.

    • @kan-zee
      @kan-zee 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Omg..that is some interesting vocabulary. wow. So tortoise gets 2 points and turtle is one point..lol

    • @RangerPhantomSAS
      @RangerPhantomSAS 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kanzee that would be a box turtle as commonly called. Judging from the marking, most likely the "ornate" variety. They make good pets, but in most of the Ozarks, the ornate is a protected species.

    My current cell phone has pre-downloaded state maps. I have a solar charger for it just in case. Luckily I haven't needed to use it yet! But having high resolution maps to zoom in and out of would be a real boon to anyone lost, you can identify terrain features easily even in the absence of GPS. Good thing you guys weren't in the Texas Desert when looking for water! It is much easier to get lost in the forest though.

    And this is why I never bother with GPS. And why no matter how many people say they have a map... I make sure I bring my own. I don't carry a lot of water myself, but thats because where I am, water is always easy to find and filter so theres not a need to carry much. Where you guys seem to be, I'd be the guy carrying 2-2qt canteens, and a couple water bottles. lol. Great video, and keeping a good attitude in a bad situation.

    Hey guys I'd love to do some renegade camping out in the Mark Twain National forest. Are ypu allowed to start fires, build shelters from local trees, hunt using primitive traps? I'd really appreciate it if you would let me know! as it would help me on my search for such a location. Thanks !

      +Aleks Yatskevich Check with local regulations. Fires yes, if no fire ban. dead wood removal ok, trapping/hunting see rules and times of year where permitted.

      mark kalwa Hi Mark. The kerosene lamp was gifted to me from Billy Joe. He mad it from a plumbing expansion tube with a screw top on the end. It is filled with kerosene and a wick is inside. It will burn for many hours. I plan to do future TH-cam on how it is made. Ken

    Lost in the woods. I do not trust GPS. It seems my battery goes dead or I lose signal. I like my map and compass. Only works if I do not lose map. I was on a lake a few years ago and Gps went out and I got lost. Lucky someone gave me directions.

      You make me smile James. I also don't trust GPS and feel safer with traditional methods. By the way, after this experience, I now always carry my own copy of the map. ATB, Ken

      I highly recommend Buford Mt. Conservation Area. It may be a difficult hike but well worth the effort.

    How did he lose a huge map like that?

    • @KennethKramm
      @KennethKramm  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandy Lewis Good question. Bob kept the map in a space between his backpack and his back. The map just slipped out of this space.
