Canyon Camping on Boulders at Mark Twain National Forest

- This is the final episode of a week-long trip to the Mark Twain National Forest, Missouri, USA. Bob ( / bob808knight ) and I hiked the Marble Creek section of the Ozark Trail and camped near Crane Lake. This time, I carried a map / compass and Bob carried extra water. The scenery was awesome. We wanted to camp on the cliffs, but discovered that the vegetation was too sensitive; so instead we selected large boulders. It took “creative engineering” to set-up my hammock and Bob’s tent.

Not only did I enjoy the video, it has inspired me to camp at least once at the Mark Twain National Forest. It’s on my overnight list for places to visit once the ranch sells and I get my van. I love watching this because you are literally in my childhood backyard. My grandpa used to take us camping there, Sam A Baker, Poplar Bluff, Meramec Caverns, and Elephant Rock. We slept in the open most of the time on pine needle beds, fished for our supper and generally learned anything and everything about the animal and plant life of the area.. I miss those days like no other.

I'm always learning lessons. This time we carried plenty of water, because we didn't know if we could easily access water from the cliffs (where we wanted to camp). We didn't know that we would be camping on a beautiful creekr. Don't know if you've seen my video on how to survive getting lost (from a couple years ago), but every time I've been disoriented / lost .... its because I didn't do one or more of the things mentioned in the video. Always have map and compass.
Like I have always said, getting lost is inconvenience that often leads to the best memories later".....lol

Hi Ken, happy trails. I once sprained my ankle on rocks like these. Now I am totally spooked by rock trails. Bobs tent setup looks pretty good . I think your eating situation here is very modern and tasty looking. Misty mornings are great and when the sun is out time for breakfast!
disco07 uppps; its not good to sprain your ankle. I stubbed my toe and it was sore the entire hike back to the car. When I took my boots off, I discovered that it was black and blue and will probably lose the nail. Sure glad that I didn't sprain my ankle. We had an awesome time and the scenery was spectacular. Too many TH-cam videos on camping up north in the snow. Spring and Fall down here in the South can't be beat IMHO. "Y'all come back now, ya hear?!"

+KennethKramm And a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours in return. To avoid confusion among your readers, the Ozarks run through both Arkansas and Missouri. In Arkansas we have the Ozark Highlands Trail, Mizzu has the Ozark Trail in this video. The US govn't is currently working to extent the Ozark Trail in MO down to join with the Trails in AR. We hillbillies tend to ignore the state line and enjoy the entire area. The Mark Twain National Forest is all in MO, and the Buffalo River, the nation's first National River, is entirely in AR. So y'all come visit us when you can. Thanks for letting me get a plug in for the Ozarks, Ken!
I have the same tent as Bob, and it can't be beat for the price! I take it kayak camping with me due to its small pack-up size.

Campfire in a can is a good idea; but over here that would still be considered an open flame, and not allowed at all during a total fire ban...

"We don't hurt little snakes." Good thing!
In Missouri, all snakes, even venomous ones, are protected under the state's Wildlife Code. Only exceptions allowed are to protect yourself, or your pets or livestock, from imminent danger. IE, if a venomous snake is going to strike and you can't easily evade, then you can protect yourself.

I'm glad to see you decided to carry extra water this time. Call me a sissy, but I never head out on the Ozark Trail without 2 liters of water. Missouri has some of the best conservation areas of any state I've ever lived in. In fact, I chose to retire in Missouri because of this. We only have to hike two miles to reach the back area of a tract in Phelps County. You guys sure look like you enjoyed your time on the Ozark Trail!

Side note: Did some hiking myself this weekend on Cross Timbers Trail (6 miles in, 6 miles out or so). Tried sleeping in a hammock for the first time, and I tell you I will never sleep in a tent again if I can help it. No rain and no need for bug net or tarp, but slept under the open stars and it was very comfortable. The hammock and straps are all of 1 to 1 1/2 lb's, so a real weight savings.
I did carry a lot of water, however (5 liters), so I need to work on that. All the streams were dry and I did not want to go down to the lake edge foliage. Working on getting my pack and gear weight down, and sans water, it's probably around 10 to 12 lbs. or so.
I do want to ask about clothes, cotton vs wool. Do you wear mostly the latter? Because, it seemed like a hot day in the video and no one seemed to be sweating too much.

Folks, Mark Twain National Forest (or any forest in Missouri) is super dense and thick, hence Ken and Bob were sleeping on rocks on a creek. Bear this in mind.
I should know. I live on 26 acres of woodland right outside of Mark Twain National Forest and Meremec State Park.
Its not always so dense that you can't sleep in it or hike through the woods. I live in Taney County.
@nick sweeney Its not that there are no tree's, quite the contrary, there are too many tree's! So many that none of them have the resources to become large, so the entire forest has the consistency of a jungle.
Of all the thing i want to learn from ya, the best would be how to pack up stuff by snapping fingers lol.

Hey Ken I have seen you make camp fire close to a lake haaa. I liked Bobs camp fire in a can. Awesome camp spend in good company. Tell Bob to eat porridge Oaks instead of chocolate in the mornings, it will give him longer lasting fuel reserves.

Wiltshire Man Yep, Sandy. Big Smile.... I've used existing campfire scars / rings next to lakes (these fire areas were made by previous campers.) The US Forest Service / LNT principles provide two recommendations 1) campfires should be at least 100 feet from water source (to avoid scaring the land/rocks/vegetation , water pollution) and 2) use existing fire rings, when available. So, in situations where previous campers, have made fires next to lakes, I try to use the existing fire location -- particularly if the area is not pristine. This reduces the human impact on the land.
In the section of the Ozark Trail where we camped there was very little evidence of human activity: no trash; no side trails; just pure / raw nature.... with awesome vegetation and wildlife! I've never seen an area as beautiful as this before. We wanted to impact the environment as little as possible. Smiling, Bob ate oatmeal after drinking hot chocolate. My breakfast was the fresh air and scenery of a two hour walking meditation. Then oatmeal before hiking back to the cars.

Ade Larsen Ade, your'e right on target, about regulations, such as where campfires should be placed. My experience is that governmental regulations don't consider local circumstances. To me, the best approach is to "do what makes sense" in the local situation. And at the same time consider considering legal or governmental guidelines.

Thanks Opal. Bob did some ingenious engineering to get the tent to work. Yep, the dam behind us was concerning. We checked it out thoroughly before camping....but it was still concerning. You know, I got up before sunrise and took pictures from the lake and walked the river, it was spectacular. And Bob stayed in his tent until a few hours after sunrise. When he got out of the tent and he saw the prism of light through the trees. Simply awesome. It goes to show, that sometimes, staying in your shelter until after sunrise and simply being quiet .... observing nature....results in the the best view. ATB, Ken
I'd love to hike there someday, I also have the thermaRest 0.5R and sleep like a baby even on hard rocks when I was just in Strathcona Provincial Park for 4 weeks. ..Enjoyed your video like always Ken.

KennethKramm Its great on my back too & I'm 6.4" tall too so back problems are gone with the ThermaRest Ridgeline.
After the military I was a homeless travellar and than just backpacked around the country. I alway threw a Thermarest mat down under my USGI bivy and threw my Kelty Cosmic 20° inside and used my pack, usually a Kelty Redwing 50 or my jacket as a pillow (gotta sleep ON your pack in cities). And just slept like that even in storms and snow. In rain and snow I threw a pancho over my pack and maybe put a tarp below me and my pack.
Since the military Ive always used an "iso mat"

Magnus Dominus The US Forest Service recommends camp fires be at least 100 feet from water sources to prevent scaring of fragile ecosystems and contamination of water with nutrients ... which could impact aquatic organisms.

If you had been off the creek could you have had a campfire? Near me here in MD and PA there are places with designated tent sites you reserve. What are the rules and regs about tent camping off trails etc? Really enjoyed the video guys! Thanks a bunch!
sjohnson1776 In most US National Forest,s it is permissible to camp away from traditional campgrounds, if you follow "Leave No Trace Principles." Usually this mean low impact camping, away from water sources, camping on durable surfaces (not vegetation). It is permissible to have campfires that leave no fire scars... not on rocks or on vegetation. Check the local regulations in your area. State Parks in the US have different regulations and dispersed camping, like we did, is usually not permitted.

I don't know how a larger guy like Bob can be comfortable in those little tents. I'm about his size, probably a little heavier, have a bad back, and I've tried a couple times to sleep in those small one man tents and I can't sleep at night and I'm very restless. I get up in the morning full of pain. Is this something you have to get used to? I've used an army foam mat and insulated bubble-wrap but it doesn't provide much cushioning. The hammock looks like it would be much more comfortable.
The rock he slept on had a shape that conform to his body, he said... and the pine needle bad made it comfortable (he says). But so was my hammock.... Thanks for watching and commenting, Nathan.

Looks like a lovely trail. Why aren't you allowed to make a fire near a lake or stream?
The comment below is true. I've been exploring Missouri and Arkansas forests recently and they are pretty tough to hike or backpack comfortably. You never "need to bug out" if if starts raining with a USGI bivy. Being a homeless drifter for years after I got out of the military and then backpacking all over the country, dipping out in rain is not an option.

I suggest looking a a map of Crane Lake. We hiked a trail, but I don't remember if it had a name. We walked from the parking toward the cliffs. See the narrative in the video.
